I can't read Japanese, so the only chance of me getting it is if they bring it over here.

Is it just me or does it seem like such a waste that the DS game cases are roughly the same size as a CD Jewel case and twice the thickness, even though the DS cards inside are really very very tiny? Obviously, for true portability when you take your DS on the road with you you really don't want to take these bulky cases along with you. They are sturdy and they protect the cards well, but couldn't they be much much smaller?

Nintendo should look at how memory cards are treated. They come in their own little cases, but the cases aren't much bigger than the cards themselves because there is no real need to be. Why couldn't DS games follow their example? They are, after all, roughly the same size.

There are really only two reasons why the large cases are an advantage. For one thing, they accomodate a manual. The other reason the large cases are good is to grab the customer's attention and make the library of games look larger and more impressive than it actually is. In either case, Nintendo could just use a cardboard case that would include both a manual and the game and a smaller more portable plastic case. Wouldn't that be the best of all worlds for them? Considering the plastic shortage and all that I think Nintendo should do things that way.

Actually, now that I think about it... isn't this EXACTLY what Nintendo did with the Gameboy? Why did they abandon that with the DS? I thought the Gameboy way was perfect and should be done that way again.

Maybe we'll see a music game similar to Guitar Hero, but it will feature something other than a guitar... like maybe a keyboard or drums or something.

Perhaps a new Zelda game that has an Ocarina peripheral will be announced?

I love those Mario & Luigi games, and if this RPG is in a similar lighthearted comedy feel then I'm sure it would be great..

I never heard of it before though. When and where is it out?

So Nintendo are evil by not making the old DS anymore and by introducing a problem with the Lite that the old DS didn't have.  Okay I'll give everyone a little bit of slack (but not those who sold their old DS) but man Nintendo is just manipulating everyone with their portables (assuming they do introduce a third DS).  Makes one feel kind of guilty for being their fan.  I guess the new DS will be covered in shart spines and if you have a problem with that in two years you can buy the DS Smooth and everything will be okay, unless of course you have a problem with holding a DS the burns your hands.  Then you'll have to buy a DS Cool.

I really doubt Nintendo intentionally created problems with the DS phat so they could profit by selling a better version later. Why would they have intentionally made that model so large and ugly considering the threat that was posed by the impending PSP? The PSP outsold the original model DS until the Lite came out. I don't think Nintendo wanted to make the Phat suck so much...

Most likely they had to rush it out so it would be ready for holiday '04 to give them a headstart over the PSP. Otherwise they'd surely have taken more time and what they released would have come out much later, but more refined.

Of course, I still only have the Phat model, and it works fine by me, but I do admit it is large and ugly. I see no need to upgrade to the Lite. But if Nintendo released another revision with enhanced capabilities I'd certainly go for it.

My predictions from Nintendo:

1.) A Zelda RPG game and/or another Mario RPG game, perhaps with the partnership of Square-Enix.

2.) A brand new 1st or 2nd party M-rated franchise to plug that hole and shut up Nintendo bashers who claim Nintendo only makes games for children.

3.) A 3rd person 3D or 2D Metroid game more in line with the older ones.

4.) An online MMORPG set in the Zelda or Mario universe. For as popular as these types of games are, Nintendo would be foolish not to make one.

5.) A DS revision that includes an SD card slot and allows the ability to play multimedia. Also includes built in Opera browser, Rumble capability, Tilt Pak, and online version of Pictochat and Mario Paint. In fact, you can save your Mario Paint works to the SD card to be printed or uploaded on your PC.

6.) A lightgun peripheral is announced for the Wii that looks and feels just like a real gun, but hooks up to the Nunchuck and works well for FPS type games. Plus this will come bundled with a game that makes good use of it, and this game will have a T or M rating to shatter Nintendo's kid only stereotype.

7.) We will see an Animal Crossing MMORPG for the Wii and perhaps a new version for the DS which will interoperate with the Wii version.

8.) Nintendo will announce a partnership with Youtube and/or Myspace for an exclusive Wii channel for their sites with special features.

9.) Nintendo will start offering music and video downloads on a Wii channel, which can be downloaded and accessed from both the Wii and the DS revision I proposed above.

10.) We will see a keyboard peripheral designed for the Wii and perhaps a mini-keyboard that plugs into the GBA slot of the DS for a more PDA feel.

11.) Reggie will be arrested for literally kicking someone's ass at the conference

Okay the PSP I can see but the DS?  Why would they release a THIRD revision of it?

It is precedented for Nintendo Handhelds to have 3 or more revisions. Look at the GBA for example.

Why would they do it? To counter Sony's PSP revision and to make buckets of cash from the increase in DS sales. The last DS revision turned things around for them in NA. Just think what a 2nd revision could accomplish for them.

Please elaborate.. what specific games are you talking about?

That racing game for the SNES that used the FX chip for starters... can't remember the names of the others, but suffice it to say if they were great they would be remembered. Don't get me wrong, though. Almost everything he has touched has become a classic. I'm just saying he doesn't *always* have a midas touch.

That said though, I am realizing I have prejudged this game before really learning anything about it other than the title. It might actually be a really great game for its genre, but like I said my gripe is mainly that it isn't an RPG or Action/Adventure type game. I don't think the Wii needs more Wii Sports type games to be honest...

7334
If they time its release to be during the Olympic hype and if they advertise it well enough then it really could do well.

My gripe is mainly that I want to see them in a different genre of game together.

Everyone's face is different. Seems like this could have similar problems as Brain Age's voice recognition.

Still, the concept of a DS cameria is interesting. I just think it should be used for something like Miis or avatars or whatever...

ALRIGHT!!" but then "at the Olympic Games" crashes you back to Earth.  It's the ultimate team-up in a setting that isn't really that exciting.  The title even sounds like some Berenstain Bears book.  It sounds like Mario and Sonic meeting up at the Olympics to solve a mystery and teach everyone a valuable lesson about sportsmanship.

It'll probably sell alright but to compare it to Halo 3 is nuts.  I wouldn't even consider this one of the Wii's big upcoming titles.  Pretty much every gamer alive could think of a more exciting idea for a Mario/Sonic team-up.

LOl, Ian you are dead on right this time.

This reminds me of this time in the early 90s when I went to Toys r' us and seen this game that had Mario on it. The game was called "Mario's Time Machine". I was thinking, well, Mario games always kick ass so I convinced my parents to get it for me thinking it was something like Super Mario World, but with the addition of a time machine. What could possibly be better than that?

I brought it home anxious to play it, and what do I find out about it? It is a stupid edutainment game. It wasn't a total waste beccause I did learn some things, and as an edutainment game I suppose it wasn't bad, but considering it had Mario in it I was expecting something far different. That really was my fault because I bought it on the title and cover and didn't do any research.

Anyway, this Mario & Sonic at the Olympics game is reminding me of that.

Does it help matters that Miyamoto is involved in this? Well, I'm sure it helps a great deal, however Miyamoto isn't infallible and has created some games over the years that have been quietly swept under the rug and forgotten because they were just terrible. This could be one of those games. We remember him for his excellent games, but he has his share of crap.

In addition, Miyamoto handling this game's production may be like calling a professional chef over to do your BBQ. Would a professional chef make the hamburgers better? Probably... but there is only so much to improve, and on this his talents would be wasted.

Bottom line: I admire Miyamoto, but I'd rather see him focus on other genres.

"11./00. [DS] Home Teacher Hitman Reborn! DS: Flame Rumble (Takara-Tomy) New!"

Not sure what this is, but from the title it seems like something Jack Thompson would start randomly filing lawsuits over, lol.

7338
They place these ridiculously high expectations on it so if it does fail to meet those expectations they can point to that and feel justified in their condemnation of Nintendo hardware.

A game involving both Sonic and Mario *COULD* sell very well, but an Olympic game?! Screw that, the fans want to see an action game or even an RPG.

Does the 360 sell at a loss? If it does, then a 33% failure rate is bad for them, because that means those systems have to be replaced or repurchased and that makes them lose money each time. So it is definitely in their best interest to fix this problem, as well as the bad image it is making for them...

LEDs are cheap, but wouldn't an LED screen have to have each pixel be its own LED? Each one would not cost a lot, but how many pixels and LEDs would it take to complete a screen?

1. The GC may have been more powerful than the PS2, but only a few people could tell the difference. Now, the disparity is so large that it's easy to see the difference.

2. A lot of the Wii's demand is currently being driven by non-gamers and casuals, and thus it doesn't mean necessarily follow that the mass market, mainstream gamer will be so accepting (who's currently sitting pretty with his PS2, working a second job in preparation for the future to arrive) .

3. Aside from graphics, the Wii's basic lack of high-end hardware is ALREADY leaving it behind in GAMEPLAY terms: AI, numbers of enemies on screen, procedural animation, living virtual dynamic worlds, secondary (HD) storage for advanced game features, and lots and lots of bloom lighting.

4. Ken Kutaragi has not left us. He's merely taking a well deserved nap in his ultra high tech germanium-tungsten coffin, recharging his immense and godlike powers, so that he may arise one day fully renewed and rejuvenated, ready to bend us to his will, making us bow at the nearest convenient PS3 technical altar to his greatness.

5. Ditto for J. Allard. Except J. Allard is bald. Which makes him cooler. Duh.

... but I'm not a fanboi of another system. *shrug* I just read about them on the internet.

1.) The N64 had a huge and noticeable disparity in graphics capability over the PS and the PS still outsold it by a wide margin. Heck, the PS was a 32 bit system and the N64 was 64 bit. That meant the N64 was twice as good!

2) A lot, but not all. Red Steel sold over a million, and Zelda TP is selling very well also.

3) I don't own a Wii yet myself so can't comment on this.

No point in responding to 4 and 5.

Tech geeks and people who likely started calling themselves a " hardcore gamer " when Halo came out. The average person, which will make up the majority of Nintendo's sales, doesn't care one bit about graphics, and they never will.

I honestly don't know what makes people think that with X big budget title sporting great graphics, that all of the sudden the Wii is going to lose all its appeal. Gears of War, Resistance, Motorstorm, and countless other great looking games aren't doing anything to stop it, so what makes you think Killzone and Halo will? Or any game for that matter?

People are not buying the Wii because it's cheap.

They're not buying the Wii because they think it'll have awesome graphics.

They're not buying the Wii because they think it'll have an awesome online experience.

They ARE buying the Wii because it provides a unique and innovative way to play games.

Don't get me wrong, the Wii's price point isn't hurting it one bit, but I honestly believe that they could've launched the system at 300 dollars and have the same level of sucess.

If anything they were too successful. I think even they underestimated demand, and some analysts are saying the shortage could even last into the summer of next year! I think the Wii would have sold out at even $350.... you gotta look at the price it is going for on Ebay. Whatever that is is what Nintendo should be charging, because that is where the demand level is at.

Why do you guys insist the Wii's weaker graphics will hurt it in the future? If that is the case, then why isn't those weaker graphics hurting it now? The PS3 and 360's graphics may increase over time, but so too will the Wii's as developers figure out how to squeeze more out.... but hasn't Nintendo already proven that graphics don't matter in the scheme of things?

Batteries do wear out over time. I've a digital camera with a rechargeable battery from 2001 that only holds a charge for about 5 minutes... no joke! I only am able to tolerate it because I keep it on the charging cradle until I use it, and I don't take it on long trips or anything. I suppose I could get a replacement....

Anyways, Kairon is right. There is a panel on the back of the DS where I presume the battery can be removed and replaced when it dies....

I hope the DS2 and PSP2 use fuel cells instead of batteries. Laptop computers are starting to come out that use fuel cells. I've never seen one myself, but I hear that they last a lot longer than batteries and you just refill them or something....

You guys are sorta right that NSMB didn't compare to SMB3 in many respects (especially in interesting powerups) but remember it is more a remake of SMB1, and compared to SMB1 it captures that feel really well and includes many great enhancements. I like that they took a more conservative approach to that, because it makes room for remakes of SMB2 and 3 in the future...

If I had a Pee-S-Pee I wouldn't bother running it off the battery anyway. I'd have it plugged into the wall or car or whatever at all times instead of fighting with keeping it charged all the time. In essence, I'd be using it just like a console, except it would be a handheld.

That's basically how I see it -- it is a handheld, definitely, but it isn't a portable. It should be called the PSH (Playstation Handheld), because calling it a portable implies that it has a great battery life, and that just isn't so.

But since you can't ever be far from an electrical socket when you use your PSP, why not just use a PS2 instead? Sony just doesn't get it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the PSP's sequel uses the Cell processor, and Mini-blu-ray discs, and requires fuel cells or even a portable fusion reactor to play. It would get so hot that in order to play it you would have to wear oven mitts.

That's true. If Blu-ray costs only $2 a disc then that is still a HUGE difference over DVDs which may be like 10 cents a disc, or whatever. Granted, the price will probably go down... eventually, but it will probably always be more expensive, and if I am not mistaken there aren't really any PS3 games out now that need all the space Blu-ray gives, are there? It would be cheaper to break a game into 4-5 DVDs if it were necessary, than to put it on 1 blu-ray... and the number of games that would ever need that much space are very very small.

And then combine that media cost with what denjet78 said about Sony charging more royalties now and the profit margine shrinks even more... and then there is the cost of developing games for such advanced and complicated hardware, and finally the very very tiny installed base of potential game purchasers right now.

All of these factors (and perhaps others as well) make it very unsurprising that developers are pulling the plug on the PS3 and moving projects to other systems. Sony will probably be able to alleviate some of these issues over time, but I think they'll never rise above 3rd place this generation. That isn't to say they can't make the PS3 profitable (but that would be very very difficult in itself), or that they won't be alive and kicking for a PS4 in 5 years, but I'm firmly convinced they've lost this round.

The PS3 is basically a Ralph Nader, or at best a Ross Perot... by which I mean they won't win, but they might qualify for matching funds for the next battle in 4-5 years.

So is Sony's insistence on Blu-ray for the PS3 going to be their Achilles heel like Nintendo's insistence on Cartridges was for the N64?

I think it will be, but for completely different reasons. For the N64 the cartridge problem was that they couldn't hold a lot, and that certainly isn't the case with Blu-ray, BUT Sony's insistence on Blu-ray is why the PS3 costs what it costs. And isn't the profit margin on PS3 games going to be less than DVD games? I know blank Blu-ray discs cost like $30 each at Staples... you can get like a whole spindle of 50 blank dvds for that price. So if that is the case, then developers will have a smaller profit margin and this too will increase their reluctance in developing for it...
