The D-Pad needs to be there for games that use the NES style controls.

That's what the classic controller is for. I agree the D-pad is awkward to use when you are holding the Wii-mote in one hand. The same kinda goes for the 1 and 2 and + and - buttons as well. These CAN be used as action buttons in a game, but they really suck for that purpose. The A and B buttons are easy enough to use, but there should be about 4 more similarly easy buttons within easy reach of your thumb and forefinger when you are holding the wiimote in one hand.

I wonder if M+ will be compatible with Nyko's unauthorized controller and/or accessories. If not, I wonder if they'll just make their own alternative.

I guess the Cell processor isn't the super computer we were promised it would be, huh?

6404
Why exactly doesn't the wii-mote/nunchuck make a good traditional remote? The Wii-mote and chuck together have a good number of buttons, and there is also a D-Pad and an analog stick. What is it lacking that a PS3 or 360 isn't? If motion control is such a bad idea for some games, then why don't third parties simply not make use of it in those games? Instead of requiring a CC for traditional controls, why not just squeeze traditional control methods out of the mote/chuck?

6405
Wouldn't it be possible to cut the device out of its condom and still be able to use it?

6406
NPC games are fine as long as they supplement new games, but if that's all we get then that is absolutely not fine.

Keep up the good work, Salesbot!

Ian, popular multiplatform franchises can go onto less powerful hardware. Its been that way ever since at least the SNES era when a game could be on both the consoles and on the much less powerful Gameboy as well. Of course, features ended up being cut out, but usually the handheld versions were decent in their own right. And now of course multiplatform games are often released on high end systems and on the DS as well, and the DS version will be extensively different (graphically weaker of course, but typically with touch screen capabilities and occasionally other bonuses).

But for some reason we aren't seeing this happening on the Wii as much. If a game could be released on the consoles AND on the DS as well, then why can't a game be released for the Wii as well as the high-end consoles? Maybe the game would have to be almost completely rewritten, but it could be done. When you take into account the Wii's larger userbase and its lower development costs I would say its definitely worth whatever it costs to rewrite a game.

One thing I think does hurt MP games on the Wii is the controls. Obviously a game like Street Fighter isn't going to make a lot of use of motion control, but why does it have to? Super Mario Galaxy is a game which hardly uses the motion controls at all, and it goes to show that the wii-mote and nunchuck together are perfectly capable of filling in for a standard controller. For that matter, third parties could also have their games depend on the classic controller. It does exist and they can make use of it, but for some reason there's this hangup that they absolutely HAVE to have wiggle-waggle control on the Wii. This was also a mistake companies made with the DS in the early years as well, but the DS now finally has games that don't depend on the touch screen at all. I think its time we start seeing Wii games that don't depend on the motion control as well. I mean, its nice if they can find a good use for it, but they need to realize that they don't absolutely have to.

^This.

Why they didn't announce a USB storage media is beyond me. Why are they taking this in baby steps?!

I'm pretty sure Nintendo is being cautious and taking their time so they don't make it easier for the homebrew/pirate crowd.

Wrong, Homebrew has been using SDHC and USB storage for a long time now. As a matter of fact, I regularly play videos on my off a 1TB USB hard drive on my wii...

I mean they may be trying to make sure it won't be easy to "crack" VC and WiiWare games and open those up to piracy. I know a lot of those VC games are already heavily pirated and those are a lost cause trying to defend, but there are still new Wiiware content coming out that Nintendo wants to make sure that only those who've purchased it will be able to play it.

You have to realize Nintendo is EXTREMELY paranoid about this sort of thing, even moreso than most companies.

I know it was sarcastic, but the Wii sales figures for Japan are very disappointing and are inconsistent with its sales in other markets. I know there are some great offerings out now like Madworld and Tenchu 4, but these aren't in the top 10 sales in Japan. Why is that? This is VERY troubling.

I know the PS3 isn't outselling the Wii by very much, but it shouldn't be outselling the Wii at all. The Wii should not only be ahead of the PS3, it should be WAY ahead of the PS3.

PS3 now 4000 ahead of Wii? When will the Wii butt kicking stop?

Maybe when the Wii finally has something besides 2-year old non-games to push it forward. This drought is ridiculous.

6413
Definitely Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Godfather 2, and the GTA series.

The PS3 is the PSP of consoles.

I don't think we have enough data to say how many more would buy it at 30$ and how many of those can't be reached simply by dropping the price later.

I would point to Resident Evil 4. Here you have a game that was previously released at $49.99 on not one but two systems 2 years before its Wii debut. And despite it being a fairly old game, it sold extremely well and generated a lot of money for Capcom with its $29.99 price tag. Had Capcom released it on the Wii at $49.99 it wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as it was.

But the problem is that if if the price drops too low then the company won't be making much money off the game and may not be able to break even.

Well, if you sell 100,000 copies at $50 then you've made $5 million.

However, if you lower the price down to $30 and this spurs sales forward and you sell like a million copies, then you've just made $30 million.

So even though a company makes less money per copy, they will still make more money as a whole due to selling far more copies. Far more people are willing to buy a game at $29,99 than they are at $49.99

6418
If you go beyond the Gamecube then they have to update the graphics

Care to explain why exactly Nintendo would HAVE to update the graphics? It seems to me Nintendo isn't concerned about graphical updates, because look at how a lot of their core franchises looks nearly exactly the same as they did from the N64 era (Animal Crossing, for example). And look at the Miis and how those look like they were from the N64 era as well.

I don't know how anyone could claim with a straight face that graphics are important to Nintendo, so I see no reason why they would be compelled to update them. Every bit of evidence we have to go on shows that Nintendo is perfectly content to leave graphics as they are and just take on wiggle-waggle control or some other minor features instead.

So the question is, with graphics kept exactly as they are, how much would it cost to tack on motion control for these older games?

6419
Vudu is absolutely correct. This is the reason why Nintendo is VERY anti-backwards compatibility. They will support BC for a generation or two in order to promote sales of successor systems, but that's the only reason. They aren't making money off the old games, and in truth they would prefer to have customers buy them again on a VC or re-make or whatever.

6420
I disagree with those who say adding new play control would be horrendously expensive for N64 and prior games. We already have N64 games running on the VC, so all that needs to be changed is for these VC games to work with the Wii's motion controls. How hard or expensive could that be? There's no need to upgrade the graphics or anything expensive or complicated like that.

6421
Nintendo doesn't want backwards compatibility to be longer lasting. This is why the DS dropped support for GB and GBC games, and why the DSi has dropped support of GBA as well. Nintendo wants you to rebuy your old games again at some future point, and they can't make you do that if they maintain endless backwards compatibility.

That said, I do expect GC compatibility to be dropped with the next Wii revision.

6422
Wouldn't the old N64/GC game Doshin the Giant be a good game possibility for the NPC series?
Sure, some translating is needed, but it could be a good opportunity to bring this series to the West.
No translation necessary since Doshin came out in Europe.

Americans don't speak European. :P

Wii doesn't have much in upcoming Wii games in Japan. So that is likely to be a factor.

Which happens to be exactly what I said, if you read my earlier post. I said the Wii is squandering their lead by now having a drought of new quality games, and this is allowing the PS3 and 360 to gain ground. It isn't completely Nintendo's fault, because games like Street Figher IV and RE5 absolutely SHOULD have been released on the Wii as well, even if the controls depended entirely on the classic controller. At least that would have been something.

Um Chozo the Wii is nearing 8 million in Japan. The 360 hasn't broken 1 million yet while the PS3 is nearing 3 million in that region. There is a 5 million gap between the Wii and PS3.Come back to me when The Wii is 1 million units ahead.

WHat Maxi said. The Wii has STOMPED PS3 and 360 in Japan, don't you remember how several months it was outselling PS3, at times, 5 to 1?

Like I said, now it is being outsold by the PS3. I don't know why you two are arguing about this... the latest weekly sales figures shows the PS3 is leading, and the 360 is now only about 2,000 units behind.

We have to remember that NIntendo still has the price drop card to play. Also it is a bit ridiculous to say Nintendo is squandering their lead, the PS3 has a VERY LONG way to go before it catches up to Wii which has almost 3 times as many systems sold.

That lead isn't quite so much in Japan, which is what prompted this whole discussion. There the PS3 is now outselling the Wii, and even the 360 isn't too far behind.
