Nintendo Gaming / RE: I had a dream last nite and it was about the rev
« on: February 15, 2006, 02:31:29 PM »
So your saying that because you played Sonic in your dreams, your sure the revmote will play well.

Interesting....

I'm VERY skeptical about the revmote and 2d games. It just doesn't seeeeem right, you know what I'm saying. It just seems very weird and awkward.

But, if you had such a wonderful time....an undescribable time, maybe there is some hope afterall.

I think that it would be a poor first impression.  No one really asked for a new standard so Nintendo has to show that they're really onto something and not just pushing a novelty to attract attention.  If all they do is map button presses to gestures then they're not doing anything to justify a major change.  All they've done is found a more awkward way to do what we could do before.  So it's incredibly important that Nintendo demonstrates right away that the remote really is the future.  If Twilight Princess is the first game a lot of Rev owners buy then they have a tainted first impression because all they're playing is a Cube game with the remote.

Imagine if the N64 didn't launch with Super Mario 64.  Imagine it launched with an arcade conversion of Street Fighter Alpha.  That game uses digital control and is better suited for a d-pad than an analog stick.  Imagine if that was the game Nintendo pushed the analog stick with.  The stick would have never taken off the way it did because for a game like that the analog stick is just a clumsy imprecise substitute for the d-pad.  The fact that they sold N64s on the strength of a game that really demonstrated how crucial the analog stick was for future gaming is why the analog stick took off.

Ian, we both don't know how well the revmote will work, but you have the most pessimistic of views.

Even if Nintendo doesn't change any of the gameplay to make the revmote appear more exciting, what's wrong with tweaking the controls so that it at least plays well? Nintendo could tweak the camera, the items, the fighting, and the horse-back riding to accomadate the revmote. And you now what? It could play brilliantly, especially with Nintendo behind the reigns.

Manditors concern was about the REVs gameplay potential and how it would be lost if TP were to be fully playable with the revmote. Your concern is that it would be a "meaningless" or "sloppy" conversion of control; a conversion that would only make the flawless design awkward. You must realize that those are two different complaints.

Its laughable to think that the control scheme we have today is the best there ever will be. Come on....think outside the box a little.

As for your Mario - streetfighter analogy, that really doesn't apply here. Think of it this way....OOT was rereleased on the GC, and it played better because of it. Yet, if Nintendo really wanted to make OOT special, or even, say....magical, they could have implemented the WW control scheme to make it that much better. Would you bitch about how they not only provided the original control scheme, but also the new one, the one we hadn't yet experience? Would you bitch about how sloppy or meaningless the conversion was even if it played alot better? For your sake, I hope not.

Smash Brother:

Why would Zelda have to be FP in order to play well? Changing the view to FP would require alot of retooling to the game. Why not instead make it third-person as it always has been.

I have come up with a control scheme that I think is very pratical, but I'm sure it has its problems. Anyway, the point is that Zelda could control beautifully if it were to stay in third-person (even if its just for fighting and the like).

Go here to read the control scheme (scroll down a couple posts)

As for Manditor:

I finally understand your complaint. When Nintendo concentrates on a game and how it must be controlled, the game is essentially tooled to make the controller limitations as transparent as possible. Your Big Poe example fortified this point.

Now your saying that if TP were to use the Revmote for the entire quest, its potential would go to waste. A valid point.

However, who cares? You may feel gipped, but you must come to terms that you are not playing Zelda Revolution. So any potential you feel was lost, is not lost at all. You are simply playing Zelda TP, but with a revmote. It is still intended to be played on a GC, but the REV allows for a taste of the future. Plus, can you honestly tell me that 6 months before Zelda REV is due, that you wouldn't be playing TP using the Revmote?

My bet is that TP will be released sometime before or after E3 (soon after).

Imagine Nintendo demoing the possibilities of the REV with many different titles that are underway. Then imagine them bringing the already released or about to be released TP to the stage floor and Miyamoto showing us how TP will play on the REV. Miyamoto shows us how sword fighting on horse-back will be that much more immersive, with him holding the controller up towards the ceiling and Link holding his sword up towards the sky. He then jousts the Pig boss and realistically slashes the boss right off of his horse.

Miyamoto for the WIN!

How much hype would that build?! It would be IanSANE. In fact, it would blow away any margain of doubt left in even the most skeptical. What better game to show how classic gaming can improve then the best series of all time?! If they launched TP directly afterwards, people would go nuts. They'd buy it just for the prospect of playing it on the REV sometime down the line. However, they'll enjoy it on the Cube no doubt.

Then before the REV launches (starting in September/October), Nintendo reminds us of the gem of a game we already have and it's ability to be played on the REV. Not only that, but shows us again how killer games such as Metriod, Smash Bros., Mario Paint (wishful thinking) and the OFFICAILY ANNOUNCE Camelot RPG play on the REV.

REV would be locked up

Reggie: Exactly. I think that our senior management has made it very clear that bringing Zelda: Twilight Princess out on GameCube is important, that we want to satisfy the GameCube fan base and have it be on that system. You've said the obvious, which is that [because] Revolution's backward compatible, it will almost effectively be a launch title for Revolution. The trick will be what makes it special to play on Revolution, and to the extent that we could create something like that, boy, wouldn't that be fantastic? Certainly one of the things that I would love to see is something that makes Zelda, when it's played on Revolution, do something magical. And I think that any Nintendo fan would love to see that.

A Reggie interview that blatantly hints at TP being able to use the REVmote. He doesn't go into detial about the types of possibilities, but he does stress that it will do something "magical" and "special."

A fishing game with REV controls sounds great, but magical?.........hardly...

We are in for a treat...

They put Camelot as likely, even though they were the first to CONFIRM a game for the REV....an RPG as a matter of fact.

Honestly, other than Nintendo First Parties, Camelot's game will be the most polished out of all of them. Besides, they did announce it about 3 years ago (right after they finished Mario Tennis).

The shell is suppose to make all past controllers obsolete.

I hope it doesn't look like the wavebird. As cool as the mock-up is, I'd rather have it similar to the N64 controller. However, I don't see it emulating the dual analog system well.

« on: February 05, 2006, 05:54:53 PM »
You guys are focusing on the franchises. What you need to do instead is focus on the genres.

Nintendo needs a wide variety of genres in order to launch successfully.

This would be IDEAL...

Mario - Platformer
Mario Paint - Nongame
Ubisoft FPS - FPS
SSBO - fighting
Camelot RPG - RPG
WaveRace - Racing
EA Sports, especially Fight Night - Sports
Zelda TP with REV controls - Action Adventure

And so on and so forth...

Hopefully with third parties they can go over all the genres twice except for maybe sports...

Ok, I found it.

Good read

I don't know if I stand by my official GEUSS that the PGC (Portable GameCUbe) will be unvield 2006, but I know it will come into frutation some time.

If you really don't want to read it all (although it is intriguing), then here's a breif summary taken from Exit or whatever. He pretty much somes up what the major advantages are.

Quote

1. Expands GC library. Game Boy has excellent 3rd-party support and if the next gameboy was a portable using the GC media and same internal software/chips the games would be INTERCHANGEABLE. This way anyone who wants a new Gameboy gets a killer full-3D system that already has hundreds of games and current GC owners will see their library grow exponentially over the life of the portable as the GBA developers take advantage of the new market on the handheld. This is a MAJOR advantage and a key reason it might become reality.

2. Expands Revolution library. It has been clearly stated over and over that Rev will be backwards compatible with GC games. This means that Rev will have disc-based media but not necessarily the SAME media and most likely completely different media such as hd-dvd capacity discs. It's not hard to make a disc drive read two types of discs, see your combo cd/dvd drive. If the Rev has backwards compatiblity with GC and the GC has a new GB portable version then Rev OUT OF THE GATE has the current Gamecube lineup and a nice growing library of Portable GC games being steadily released. Nintendo's biggest problems with consoles have been thin libraries early-on so this kind of functionality can MAJORLY address a problem Nin has had in the past.

3. It's cool. The DS is cool because of its unique features/games and backwards compatiblity with GBA cartridges. That was probably included on DS so the next GB wouldn't have to have that. If the next GB is disc-based then adding a cartridge slot would be a bit cumbersome and also the screens/video hardware would be different. A portable GC would immediately blast the PSP's specs out of the water. GC has better specs than the PS2 and the PSP is not even a PS2.

4. It's in line with previous Nintendo thinking. The Super GB on SNES and the GBPlayer on GC are add-ons that gave console owners the ability to play portable games at home. Rev would have this built-in from the get go. Having THREE SYSTEMS all play the same games concurrently would be amazing and a brilliant way to increase software sales.

Merrick was killed for releasing one of Nintendo's biggest secrets.

Nobody believes me, nor cares, but he let slip that Zelda will use NGC controls throughout the entire game (but still remain a GC game with GC controls).

Agreed.

Iron Knuckles should definitely make a return. Fighting two at the same time in Ganondorf's castle[/spolier] was probably my favorite non-boss fight in the game. It's craziness. Its basically like fighting one, but it's two times as fast. If you didn't have the Goron sword it took a while.

Oh ya, and fighting those Gerudo's guards was fun as well.

I saw the WW fighting style far too easy. I did like how you could pick other people's weapons up, but overall, I never felt in danger. I wish the parry was harder to do.

i remember my former self started this exact discussion.

I might dig it up, but basically there are many reasons why going with the GC's optical disks as the Next GBA's medium would be smart.

2 Floor stages

Have fights that have to level of stages. One can be vastly different then the other. When you fall from the top, you might be able to land on the bottom stage. Better yet, if your luckly, you can return to the top with some mechanism I dont feel like describing.

This could allow for some huge battles (8+) and some pretty cool game modes (capture the trophy).

Or

Individual camera and Screen camera

Screen camera is what we are use to today, with the auto-zooming and all.
Individual camera allows you to see your charachter up-close at all times.

With two screens it is now possible to have both....

It makes me want to puke.....Oh well, it gets the job done.

You don't think there going to be able to do this is the near future (2-3 years from now)? Why? Have you seen some sub-notebooks?

The PSP is damn near the PS2.

Take away all the media capabilities and somehow juice up the battery life (maybe but more ram), and I bet this thing could become a reality.

Of course I think it isn't very pleasing aesthetically, so a nice rev-make-over would hit the spot.
