TalkBack / 4 Days Until Metroid Returns!
    « on: November 14, 2002, 04:58:16 AM »
ARE YOU SERIOUS?  METROID IS COMING OUT?  OMFG! WHEN!?  Kind of a worthless press release, at least for PGC standards.  But hell, it's Metroid.

Get `Primed' for the Holidays -- Metroid is Back!

World's Video Game Players Rejoice as Spine-chilling Suspense Returns for NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Game Boy Advance

REDMOND, Wash.--Nov. 14, 2002--For eight years, her disciples around the globe have waited.

In four days, Samus Aran returns: leaping forward to explore a foreboding, sci-fi future . . . tilting backwards in tribute to past days of pure video game adventure. With not one, but two brand new games -- Metroid(R) Prime for NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) and Metroid(R) Fusion for Game Boy(R) Advance -- this intergalactic bounty hunter expands her exploits from the comfort of your couch to anywhere a portable Game Boy Advance can be carried. Both games land on Nov. 18.

"There are few fans in the world of video games more zealous than Metroid fans," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "But despite their enthusiasm, we know some feared Metroid wouldn't be the same in 3-D as it was in 2-D. They were right -- it's better. And some thought the Game Boy Advance version could never match its Super NES predecessor. Well, it's surpassed it."

Both games feature the eerie solitude and claustrophobic exploration that the original Metroid games demonstrated in the '80s. NINTENDO GAMECUBE owners will confront the varied landscapes of the planet Tallon IV through a novel, first-person visor perspective. Metroid Fusion players must 'fuse' with alien enemies in order to save Samus from a parasite destroying her from within.

Owing to the unique connectivity between the two systems, players can receive two outstanding bonuses by linking their hardware. By successfully completing the NINTENDO GAMECUBE version, Samus can be equipped with the new armored spacesuit featured in Metroid Fusion. Plus, those who successfully complete the Game Boy Advance adventure can unlock an embedded version of the original Nintendo Entertainment System(R) Metroid(R) for play on their NINTENDO GAMECUBE systems.

Developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo, Metroid Prime is an intense exercise in strategy, exploration and survival.

Metroid Prime is rated T (Teen) and will be available at a suggested retail price of $49.95. Metroid Fusion is rated E (Everyone) and carries a suggested retail price of $34.95.

TalkBack / Broadband Adapters Sold Out?
    « on: November 06, 2002, 07:50:13 AM »
We’ve been getting floods of reports on this issue from around the globe.  Is Nintendo canceling the newly released Broadband Adapter?

As we reported (don’t say we didn’t warn you) weeks ago, Nintendo had shipped a limited supply of Broadband Adapters to stores.  Most allocations were limited to pre-orders, and a few extra units.  Now most retailers are completely sold out, and the hardware is listed as Discontinued.

In related news, there’s also a shortage of Phantasy Star Online, and at some stores this is listed as discontinued as well.

All this means is manufacturers (Nintendo and Sega) only shipped a limited amount of these items to retailers, and they currently cannot get anymore.  This doesn’t mean the companies won’t produce anymore, it’s just that the retailers cannot get anymore.

So what can you do if you want to get a copy of Phantasy Star Online, and a Broadband Adapter?

    1.   Call stores in your area
    2.   Get an import adapter.  They work just fine with the US version (and Japanese version) of Phantasy Star Online.
    3.   Check Ebay.  (it could get ugly)

Good Luck!  We’ll keep you posted.

    TalkBack / Fear the Hamsters!
    « on: November 06, 2002, 07:04:57 AM »
It's not just a hamster...it's Hamtaro!  Insert your own twisted hamster joke here...

    Hamtaro Sparks National Hysteria

Sunflower Seed Shortage and Communication Breakdown Plague Consumers and Families

SEEDLING, Mich.--Nov. 6, 2002--The Sunflower Seed Association of America (SSAA) has officially declared a United States agricultural emergency, blaming Nintendo's Hamtaro game for a nationwide shortage of its namesake product.

Meanwhile, parents in every state are complaining their children are now speaking in a strange language. The chaos began with the release of Nintendo of America's newest video game, Hamtaro(TM): Ham-Hams Unite!(TM), now available on Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color.

The sunflower seed dilemma has the SSAA baffled. "The Hamtaro hype has created a virtual seed obsession among kids, and we just can't keep up," says Jim "Salty" Schell, director of the SSAA. "At this point we aren't even sure we'll be able to stock the stadiums in time for next year's baseball season." The SSAA has asked neighboring Canada to send emergency supplies to the United States, but the Canadian government won't deal as Hamtaro's popularity is beginning to infiltrate Canada as well. "Normally, we'd be happy to supply in U.S., but the Hamtaro craze has already crossed the border," explains Ms. Flora Stem, magistrate of agriculture.

Parents nationwide are bewildered by what their children may be trying to communicate when they speak "Ham-Chat," the official Hamtaro language. They can't help with homework, can't eavesdrop on phone conversations and they don't even know what their kids want for dinner (besides sunflower seeds).

One Omaha parent declared: "I had no idea this video game would cause so much mayhem! You don't know what a long night means until you sit through a grade school rendition of `Grease' -- all in Ham-Chat!" When asked about his views on Hamtaro, a Pacoima child replied, "Hamha, thank-Q for such a mega-Q and wondachu video game. It's koochi-Q spiffie!"

The Hamtaro phenomenon spread to the United States from Japan. It first was innocently introduced to children there as a series of illustrated storybooks in 1997, and has exploded into a $3 billion licensed property. The heartwarming hamster is the category leader in children's publishing in Japan, with a starring role in his own top-rated children's program in Tokyo, a top-selling children's home video and a thriving children's music soundtrack.

Hamtaro's introduction to America came with the Hamtaro animated television series, introduced on Cartoon Network last June. It's currently seen in 80.7 million homes (weekdays at 8:00 a.m. EST).

Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! allows players to take control of the title's namesake and enlist in a mission to find and gather all of Hamtaro's "Ham-Ham" friends. Through interactions with these precocious pets, players must master the use of the Ham-Ham language in order to link terms together to solve puzzles, find more friends, and do Ham-Jams! Ham-Ham pals, along with a complete Ham-Ham dictionary of terms, will help Hamtaro accomplish his mission. Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! is rated "E" for everyone and is available for an MSRP of $19.95.

Nintendo makes hospital stays just that much better for kids...

Nintendo, Starlight and Mena Suvari Unveil All-New Fun Centers for Hospitalized Children Nationwide

Actress Mena Suvari Unveils All-New Fun Centers

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 29, 2002 – At a time when holiday shoppers are top-of-mind for most companies, Nintendo of America Inc. renews its commitment to putting electronic fun in more important places than just store shelves – hospitals.

Nintendo and Starlight Children’s Foundation today commemorate their 12-year partnership, plus the millions of smiles generated from the Fun Center program, with the launch of all-new Fun Centers, state-of-the-art mobile entertainment units designed specifically for hospitalized children. Actress Mena Suvari (American Beauty, American Pie), longtime Starlight international board member Howard Davine, several pediatric patients and Nintendo video game star Mario™ headlined a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles to commence the national roll-out of the newly designed Fun Center, featuring a NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Sharp AQUOS Liquid Crystal Television with DVD player.

“We are honored to be the first to receive the newest model from Nintendo,” said Doug Leffin, BA, clinical child life specialist, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Patient & Family Services. “Fun Centers provide a necessary escape from the challenges faced by pediatric patients, plus they give children who may have limited mobility an opportunity to exercise a sense of power and control. This diversion holds a therapeutic value while enhancing a hospitalized child's self-esteem.”

Fun Centers allow patients to cultivate friendships and have more normalized social interaction. Sergio and Juan, two patients who have become friends during their hospital stay in the Department of Rehabilitation at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles have many positive things to say about the Fun Centers. “Sometimes I challenge other kids to a game and I make new friends,” said 14-year-old Sergio. “It helps me get ‘un-bored’,” added 11-year-old Juan.

With the launch of 500 all-new Fun Centers nationwide, Nintendo affirms its belief in Starlight’s work with a charitable contribution surpassing $3 million. Each month, more than 118,000 hospitalized children across the nation will benefit from the Fun Center program.

“Nintendo is deeply committed to having every hospitalized child possible benefit from Fun Centers,” said Phil Rogers, executive vice president, Operations, Nintendo of America Inc. “By partnering with Starlight, Nintendo can do what it does best in bringing happiness and laughter to the everyday lives of kids.”

Fun Centers provide hours of enjoyment and an opportunity for sick kids to relax and temporarily forget their pain. With NINTENDO GAMECUBE hits such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Wave Race: Blue Storm, among others, and a variety of age-appropriate DVDs, the Fun Center is a welcome hospital visitor.

“Through Nintendo’s strategic manufacturing and wealth of knowledge about kids,” said Kip Crennan, president, international board of directors, Starlight Children’s Foundation, “we began a brilliant partnership that endures to this day as a shinning example of how senior executives can embrace the public good in their corporation’s best ethical interest.”

Over the past decade, Starlight has placed more than 3,000 Fun Centers with Nintendo game systems in more than 1,000 hospitals across the country – a number that brings Nintendo and Starlight closer to meeting the ever-increasing need for Fun Centers, according to a recent survey of pediatric facilities conducted by Boston Consulting Group. In addition, caregivers have reported important quality-of-life benefits for patients who use the Fun Centers, such as reduced need for pain medicine and lower levels of stress, boredom and loneliness.

    TalkBack / Broadband Adapter Shortage?
    « on: October 27, 2002, 10:40:35 AM »
There aren’t games yet available, yet stores are selling out of the broadband adapters.  Get the news right here.

Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1&2 will be in stores this Tuesday, yet getting your hands on a Broadband Adapter could be tricky.

It seems Nintendo is shipping a very limited supply of the Broadband Adapters to retailers. Most stores have already sold out of the small amount they received.  Smaller local stores (Mom and Pop type stores) can’t seem to get any direct from suppliers, as most of the stock is going to the larger chain stores, and mall video game stores.

If you’re looking to get online immediately with Phantasy Star Online, you may want to call around to your local retailers to see if any still have some available.  Modem Adapters seem to be abundant, but Broadband Adapters seem to be sold out or not available.

    We’ll keep you posted!

TalkBack / New Pan-European Age Ratings Announced
    « on: October 23, 2002, 07:47:09 AM »
Know what's bad.  Scary pictures of vomiting, and spiders to shy you away from naughty games.

FIRST EVER PAN-EUROPEAN AGE RATING SYSTEM FOR COMPUTER AND VIDEO GAMES WILL PROVIDE ASSURANCE FOR PARENTS ACROSS EUROPE

Consumers in the UK and throughout Europe will soon see the appearance of new age ratings and symbols on computer and video games, whether bought at retail or accessed online. This will give parents, shoppers and online consumers added confidence that the content of the game, whether it is bought at a high street retail outlet, or accessed via the internet, is suitable for a specific age group. The development is significant in that it is the first time that any form of entertainment medium has come up with an age rating system that meets the varying cultural standards of different European countries.

The pan-European voluntary system, which has been announced by The Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE) will introduce five age categories: namely, aged three and over; seven and over; 12 and over; 16 and over and 18 and over. The age ratings do not relate to the complexity of the game. The intention of the new system is to ensure that children are not inadvertently exposed to content that is deemed unsuitable, for example scenes of a violent, sexual, frightening or discriminatory nature or those that contain images of drug use or strong language. In addition to the age categories, where an upper age rating applies, packs will also show up to two symbols, indicating the nature of the content.

The ISFE system has been designed to meet varying cultural standards and attitudes across Member States and is supported by the majority of relevant Member State Government Agencies and all interactive leisure software trade organisations in Europe including the UK, as represented by The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA).

The new European system will replace the current voluntary age rating procedure in the UK, which was introduced by ELSPA in 1994. The ELSPA system was the first voluntary age rating system for any entertainment medium and has provided the template for the new European system. The ELSPA system has proved extremely successful. Since its introduction over 95% of all leisure software products have complied with the ELSPA voluntary code. Over 60% of all games given an ELSPA rating by the Video Standards Council (VSC) are rated as suitable for all ages (i.e. given a rating of age three and over) and it is expected that this will remain the same under the new system. The new system will be administered by the Netherlands Institute for Classification of Audio-visual Media (NICAM). Whilst ELSPA will not be responsible for the ongoing administration of the ratings under the new European system, it is responsible for the launch in the UK. The VSC, which currently approves the rating of computer and video games in UK, will retain a monitoring role to ensure that the new European ratings comply with the requirements of the Video Recordings Act in UK.

The new ISFE age rating system will be introduced throughout Europe in Spring 2003, with the exception of Germany, which will retain its own rating system, following recent proposals of their Government to make them mandatory. ISFE aims for full implementation across all European Member States by mid-year. Finland and Portugal have not yet signed up for the new system but have indicated that once the scheme is up and running, they will pursue its introduction.

Commenting on the new European rating, Roger Bennett, Director General of ELSPA said:

"This is a very important development in that the computer and video games sector is the first entertainment media that has developed an age rating code to which different European countries agree. The purpose is to provide consumers throughout Europe with intelligible, easy to act on, information about the age categories for which the content of a product is deemed suitable. The overall objective of the new system is to protect minors from inadvertent exposure to unsuitable material. It also meets the European Commission's twin objectives: of making it easy for businesses to sell cross-border and domestically, also making consumers feel as comfortable shopping cross-border too".
