Ah, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Metal Gear Solid game that very few people played and has a massive influence on what Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain is. I've been playing Peace Walker HD, and looking at The Phantom Pain makes it apparent that MGSV is basically Super Peace Walker World. Peace Walker HD really is Metal Gear Solid in bite-sized, Monster-Hunter-esque chunks with nearly all missions being completed in 5-10 minutes, longer for boss fights. Also, all the boss fights in the first 4 chapters of the game are easily managed by equipping all the recovery items you can carry, a machine gun, a rocket launcher, and a support marker to resupply.

Peace Walker HD is really fun and can be really grindy.

As for the Nintendo NX, I have the expectation that Nintendo will pocket the savings from the ease of developing a game for both the handheld system and home system for themselves. As much as I would like it, I don't see them offering cross buy or significant discounts.

This brings up the question of why anyone would buy the more expensive NX home system or both (or more) NX systems. My assumption is that Nintendo has things set up in a way they will be fine if a person only buys one system or only buys the cheaper handheld NX system.

I tolerated the movement and aiming scheme of Resident Evil 4 (GCN) at the time I was playing it. I don't want to go back to that style. Granted, I'm not a survival horror or a horror game guy in general. Looking at the big horror darlings of this year (SOMA, Until Dawn) and past (Alien: Isolation), all have characters that control roughly the way you would want judging from video footage.

The first time you try to do an about face in Fatal Frame (quickest is to pull back on the left stick and press ZL to reorient the camera) it will not feel good at all. These days, I don't think even horror games can get away with character control that feels cumbersome and unwieldy. If you are going to scare a player now it is not through clumsy character movement that makes the player character seem dumb.

Then again, maybe more horror game fans want that sort of wrestling with character movement then I think.

1180
I hope NA gets it. Enough people have spoken highly of the series that it would be a shame if it didn't release as wide as possible.

1181
The characters can emote. The cut scenes in the trial portion have displayed that. It's just that the flat affect that a lot of Japanese horror stuff does makes emotion really subtle. Doesn't help that the one character that could be the least sullen has been seemingly offed. But the in-game character stuff are quite stiff. Outside of big budget games, Japan has never been good with its characters emoting.

I've played through the free-to-start trial in a little over two hours. This is the Prologue, Drop 1 (the tutorial), and Drop 2 up to Fuyuha fight. While I enjoyed my time, I can already see where the disappointed reviews are coming from. The characters move heavily and can not turn around in place quickly (actually I don't think they can turn around in place at all). I had Mui and Yuri getting caught in all sorts of things and angles.

Then there's the combat where the game becomes a first-person shooter. The gyro controls are the gyro controls; either you are acclimated to them or not. I was fond of flicking the GamePad up and down in Splatoon and that has translated to Fatal Frame's two axes. However, Maiden of Black Water requires the manipulation of a third axis for portrait or Dutch angle shots. While it is an interesting game mechanic, it creates confusion with the controls in both shooting mode control schemes. Lastly, those using the gyro controls should be mindful of how they manipulate the Y-axis of the left stick. When you settle you GamePad after a hectic aiming moment, you may find your camera pointed at the sky or the ground.

Thinking on it, I'm not sure if I want a survival horror game that hasn't evolved much from Resident Evil 4.

The game already has virgin suicides. It didn't necessarily need girls in nighties to ward off the kiddy image.

1183
It sounds like Koei Tecmo made "another Fatal Frame game" when the world needed "a new Fatal Frame game".

1184
Thinking on it, it's possible ninjas will get the popular vote despite the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. Then again, I am a child of the '90s that caught the tail end of the international influence of an economically-strong Japan.

Any way, with the bump of wins going from 4x to 6x, I do wonder why they have the popular vote at all.

1185
Mm hm.

For those curious, the free-to-start portion and the rest of the game is available now. The free portion is a 6.351 GB download and the rest of the game is a 9.964 GB installer download.

1186
I'd imagine the only Fire Emblem aspects of the battle system would be the weapon triangle. I was about to say assist attacks from pairing up, but I think the SMT games have something like that already.

Makers and Player should be able to tag to keep levels honest.
You have more faith in (anonymous, online) humanity than I do.

My faith comes and goes. The cyber nightmare scenario is gamifying the tagging system to promote accurate tagging and punishing inaccurate tagging.

The tagging system I had in mind does not end with a one-and-done "tag". Rather each tag has a value of trustworthiness that is determined some how. Perhaps it would be too much to ask players to tag a level. Maybe a short prompt of "Were the Maker's tags accurate? Yes/No" in the Pause menu or Level Complete screen will suffice. Of course, Player-side tagging should still be available to (hopefully) categorize levels properly.

The easiest change from what I see is a tagging system that allows makers and players to tag any level with what the level is trying to do. Some example tags would be "Regular", "Auto", "Puzzle", "Crazy", "Kaizo", and "Precision". Makers and Player should be able to tag to keep levels honest.

The Metal Gear Solid has a lot of acclaim and love around it, but it was never that huge of a hit.

Also, people really love those sports games.

I guess Super Mario Maker in 6th is alright?

Reviews are out! And they are extremely mixed! It's Kirby and the Rainbow Curse all over again.

For the controls, reviewers have criticized the basic movement being frustrating and imprecise. Others took issue with the gyro controls losing tracking, recommending to use the control scheme with the sticks.

For the story, some couldn't care for any of the three playable characters. They found the story to be boring and tired.

What I find most damning are the criticisms of back tracking, repetition, and repeated content. The game has you trekking through previously explored areas multiple times while throwing more enemies and jump scares at you. A reviewer has written that the game is structured so that a 10 hour game is stretched to almost twice that.

It's not all gloom though. The reviewer at Ars Technica has a favorable verdict on the game. The IGN reviewer came away enjoying the game, taking issue with clumsy controls and repetitive encounters. NWR's official review is one of the most favorable reviews on the game.

Comparing Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water to Sony's Until Dawn, I find it amusing that the most favored of this year's big-publisher-horror games is the one that is "less of a game." Putting away the lame snark, Until Dawn's writing, execution, brevity, and what not are what will put it ahead of this latest Fatal Frame.

From the "not happy" reviews that have come out, some couldn't get along with the controls. More importantly, they found the story to be crap and the game repeating itself to the point of boredom. Hmm, hopefully a case of different strokes for different folks?

The bikini-esque costumes being removed gets no love lost or gained for me, but it is ridiculous for it to happen for an M-rated game with a niche audience. Looking forward, this sets expectations for some specific armor edits in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

1195
At the moment, I believe in the enthusiastic impressions of those who have tried and are eagerly anticipating VR to be genuine. Even at the base level of a change in perspective and head tracking, I can imagine the sense of immersion to be revolutionary.

I just wonder if this sense of immersion is something a lot of people will want to do on a regular basis. Or if it as excessive and impractical as a super car or a separate home theater room with a super projector and a mega sound system. That is an unfair comparison given the speculated prices of the upcoming headsets. I can't help but wonder how a VR headset will fit in to any given person's life, if at all.

I appreciate the lowered ink usage for the Heavy Splatling since I want to play well with it. I didn't find the amount of ink it used before to be restricting, but it did slow an already contemplative weapon.

Now if only I could choose my spots well when using the Heavy Splatling.

I don't know, but it is a fairly big release. I'm surprised Nintendo isn't saying more about it, especially with the season.

Instead, they are content with releasing "Spoopy" trailers

Oh sure, the only comment anyone cares about in my post is how the Wii U is a complete failure- which it is. ...

Well, it's what you get when you aren't expressing enough happiness with your consumer purchase among those that do. :p

Anyway, all that Wall Street Journal stuff is soft confirmation on the ideas and hopes of what has been discussed previously in this thread. It sounds good.
