TalkBack / RE: It's Already Over ...
« on: March 10, 2004, 07:07:13 AM »
"but that market changed from what those two companies are pushing almost four years ago to something that is generally more interested in solid Japanese companies rather than blood and guts Doom/ Diablo inspired themes."

I highly doubt japanese style games will ever be really popular in North America EVER again.

"Nintendo has the strongest chance of grasping the hardcore market if they would just get their mainstreme image under control. The next generation is a clean slate;"

FALSE, nintendo's image isnt going away very fast, if at all the moment, hell, it may even be getting worse.

"I believe whoever can grasp the minority audience of hardcores then they can lead the market. Just like any other company who may use racial minority groups to get their mainstreme audience active."

This is so flawed it isnt even funny. Nintendo already has the Minority. The minority translates to less sales, it is as simple as that. MArio games will NEVER be as popular as they once were, to think otherwise is just wishful thinking.

I will use myself as an example. I am an older gamer (33), who has alway owned NIN consoles, I have had every single one, this was the first generation I have owned the "others" as well.
I consider myself to be a longtime gamer, who plays often, who has the financial means to buy whatever games and consoles I desire. The way things stand at the moment, this will be my last NIN console. I hardly use it at all anymore, all of the NIN favorites I had grown up with I didnt like this generation, Zelda, Mario, all failed to meet what I was looking for. I play my X-box the most now, simply because I llike the games on it better, I love X-box live, I also love the fact many of the games are in 480P and almost all are DD5.1, letting me make the most of my TV and Stereo.
Many here will say, great, get lost. That is fine with me, but remember that I am not alone in my thoughts, and that it wouldnt be very hard to make me change my mind if NIN offered a more diverse product.

If SEGA is behind it, it will no doubt be junk. IMO SEGA cant do anything right.

I will be getting this asap, most likely for my x-box however because of the 5.1 sound and 480p hook up.

Demo disks, demo disks, demo disks. That is one thing I really like about my x-box, is that I can preview games, AT HOME, on my gear, and decide if they are what I am looking for. IMO this is something NIN really needs to start doing. I would think that 1st, 2nd and 3rd party developers would be all for this.

"Making a profit is what I consider fine, and Nintendo is better at that game than both Microsoft and Sony at the moment."

If you remove the hand held sales, is this still the case?

"How is it Nintendo's fault that their fans aren't all that interested in games like GTA?"

because NIN has created a horde of "stuck up we are better than you , because we said so gamers" this is why.

Look at many of the people who post here, they think anything non NIN is junk.

I have never, in all my life met a more pompous group, than those who post here on a regular basis.

" If Twin Snakes sells well, it could be a major break for Nintendo."

Bullchit, this is what everyone said about RE and Metroid prime.

"Inkwell: If they want to sell the PSP they need to halve the price first, USD450 is too much for ANYONE."

again that is BS, dont underestimate what people are willing to spend to be "IN". Look at the IPOD and how well it is selling despite its cost. To think that the PSP is going to be a flop like every other handheld is very foolish. The PSP will severly hurt Nins strangle hold on the handheld market, and if they think a hand held with 2 screens will fix that, then IMO they are even further offbase than I once thought.

Once again, Ian has summed up my thoughts exactly, and yet another great editorial by Johnny.
Its time to take off the rose colored glasses and realize that their are indeed very serious problems with Nintendo strategy.

"And how does that differ from anything else? Movies take a long time and effort to make, as does music.....you don't see movies or music priced at $50 dollars do you?"

I am sure if movies were 20 hours long they would cost more as well.

Get over this people, entertainment just costs more now a days.
For the all the people who cant afford a game there is one who can. Marketers dont care if you can afford it, some one can and that is all that matters.

"Making games cheaper would be a very smart business move."

no it wouldnt be. Charge whatever the market will bear. The market says $50 is fine, then $50 it will be. Lowering prices when you have already established an industry accepted norm is just plain dumb. Take an economics course or two for christs sake.

I stayed at a hotel in Missasauga the last few days and they had an option to play PS2 games on the room TV. The part I found funny was that they only had PS1 controllers in the rooms.

"their 3rd party support is pretty good in Japan"

who gives a sh*t, I dont live in japan, and it is one hell of a drive to get a game or two.

"they're maturing their most kid-friendly franchise (Pokemon)"

this means absolutly nothing. It will still be considered kiddie because it is pokemon.

"I also once saw a man brush off his son's praise for SSBM and suggest he get the Scorpion King instead. And let's not forgot the people who think that every Cube game is made by Nintendo and every Playstation game is made by Sony. Never underestimate the stupidity of people. "

Lack of knowledge, and stupid, are very differant things. This I believe is truest in the video game sector. People just dont know, and this is mostly because they dont care, and have no desire to know. They simply want to play games for entertainment. They dont read reviews, they have never heard of a console war, and nost dont even know that Tony Hawk is a real guy. All this is because they simply dont put any stock into video games, they are simply toys, just another form of entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. Having shelves full of PS2's and x-box's while the gamecube shelf sits empty is very bad business. Many people who see this will simply assume that Nintendo is done, that they dont sell gamecubes anymore, that is if they even knew about them in the first place. Shelves need to be stocked, advertising needs to be constant, and then, and only then will any of this matter.

then buy all the systems. Why bitch about it when the problem can be solved by YOU taking action.
God these topics are so freaking stupid.

"But I find their contribution to home consoles is overrated, at least from a software point of view. Nearly all Atari's best 2600 games are arcade ports. Adventure and Yar's Revenge are like the only Atari games (not including Activision's stuff) I can think of that were both quite good and were not arcade ports."

You need to remeber, that back in those days (my days) arcades were the big thing. To be able to play "arcade" games at home was the biggest thrill in the world. No body wanted games that werent in the arcades.  Add in the fact that development houses were kind of scarce , and the need for original console only games wasnt really needed.

What Atari did, IMO, that was so amazing, was that they, with one machine, made kids stay home. Nothing since the TV itself had accomplished that feat.
