General Gaming / RE: 360 Does What Xbox ... Waitaminute!
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:37:45 PM »
The million dollar question.  I don't know.  MS has alot more money than any console maker ever.  So I imagine the hype on the 360 will be huge.  But what do they always say?  It depends on the games.  Maybe a big breakout hit will sell it.  Also it looks like the xbox will have some abilities to stream audio and video from the pc among other stuff.  So depending upon the launch games and the hardware features and how soon after the competition's consoles launch and their features, I might buy one.

The consoles would have a pretty good resale value so I don't think you'd be out a whole lot if you bought one and then changed your mind.

I tend to think the 360 won't be that impressive at launch if you don't have hdtv.  And aren't on xbox live.  Which is 90% of americans and 90% of current xbox owners.

Also if the games are project gotham 3 and Halo 3 and sequel to all these other games that I've just played recently I ain't about to buy one.  There's got to be some new big hits.

Yeah we're back to square one.  No one knows wtf the REvolution is going to be about.  And after E3 we still might not know yet.

DS baby!  Wow!  It's looking like the DS has absorbed the initial PSP launch blow and is now back on the attack.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Interactive Cutscenes
« on: April 27, 2005, 05:42:41 PM »
Ok.  I got RE4.   I don't know.  I'm not a big cutscene fan so the interactive ones still don't do it for me.   I mean I want to play my game.  Not watch.  It is better than a regular cutscene.  The interactive cutscenes were also a bit corny.  Kinda reminded me of those old school games.  LIke MS Olympic Decathlon.   I did like that they varied the keys you have to press a bit in a couple of the ones I've encountered so far.  Anyway, I'd rather do all the dodging of boulders and other stuff in the game.   Just like the pda stuff.  I'd rather just see the person I'm talking too instead of seeing myself talk also.  btw, does your character break out a skateboard midway thru RE4?  I keep thinking he's gonna.

When in doubt, guilty until proven innocent on an internet message board.  That's what I say.

633
This is just a guy playing with you all.  What guy is going to work for Sega and risk his job by posting crap like this on the internet?  And posting alot of it.  Where it can be traced.  What Sega employee knows everything Nintendo is doing on  their major games and what EA is doing etc.  It's all b.s.  designed to play into every Nintendo fan's desires.

I would love it if it were true but ...it ain't.

I'm tempted to get this game but I can't support games that are crappy ports.

635
That game spot/sega employee forum post sounds great.  Probably just a good writer tho.  Who doesn't want to believe Nintendo has a Halo killer and a controller that will rock the world and online play that will dominate?  Also how you are you gonna hang out on message boards on your revolution unless it has a keyboard.  Not that that couldn't happen but you'd think he'd cover that point.  PLus the whole thing is short on specifics and long on hype.

well I think the tech would be like the wireless handheld mice for pcs.  That's the tech NItnendo licensed years ago.  I don't think that stuff is true gyroscopes.  And also like an analog stick you could program it so isn't so touchy.  ie change the size of the dead space where movement of the controller wouldn't' effect movement on the screen.

637
sharp3d.com.  Has sharp's 3d technology.  The thing is, it's built into a screen.  I don't see this as financially feasible for a console.  Maybe they'll do it with the next gameboy.  But the REvolution?  Nah.   And certainly Nintendo isn't going to make people wear 3d glasses.  So the REvolution's new thing is not 3d.

another site

it's the 3d consortium that many jap companies belong to like Sharp and Sony.

ARe those the games Nintendo is going to make?  GAmes like bejeweled, Wordjong and variations of bingo?  Those are the games for casual gamers.

It wouldn't take much to offer those games.  I'd sure half of them are practicallly public domain.

639
And just how is this going to be implemented?   I don't think this is it.

old news I guess.  But perhaps by looking in the past you will find some solid evidence as to what will be coming  in the future.

So you've never played the Metroid Prime games or Pikmin 2 or Rogue Leader?  There are some amazing games on the Cube that use all of the buttons.

I don't understand why there are so many people here in support of limiting controller options.  You remove anything from the Cube controller and right away you're limiting the types of games that appear on the console.  If a developer feels he needs 8 buttons, a d-pad, and two analog sticks he's going to make his game to use those controls and he's not even going to consider using the Rev over the competition if the Rev's controller is intentionally restrictive in its design.

Yeah I agree with you there.  Some games will make use of the extra buttons and sticks.  Other games that want to have simple controls don't have to use them all.  Hell Kirby's Air  Ride used just the stick and the Green button.  You can't get a lot simpler than that.  Unless it's just one button for the whole game which I think is something Nintendo thinks about.  Sometimes I think they are trying to outsmart themselves.

Anyway you can get simpler controls outta of a fairly complicated controller if you want.  But not the other way around.

Gyroscope
Touch Screen
Trackpad/Trackball
Microphone

So which one of these technologies is Nintendo going to put into it's controller?

I haven't played RE4 yet (it's on the way) but they should take out cutscenes all together.  I liked Metroid Prime which didn't really have any.  The story was told in game.

Same with the pc game Half Life 2.  You talk to characters without ever leaving the game.  Much more immersive.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What type of games should the Rev launch with?

Yeah Nintendo is a bit cute.  I mean I sorta want to play Animal crossing so I can to the addicting part some talk about but it's so fricking cute.  Pikmin?  I don't mind that one.  I'm playing it right now.  It does look a bit surreal and looks kewl.  Tho it's also a bit cute and has some bouncy bouncy music.  But hell your pikmin can drown or get caught on fire or eaten.

That F-Zero GX game has lots of characters that would appeal to 13 yr olds and it isn't cute.  They could take some of those guys and make a fps or platformer or adventure game or spaceship game set in the future.

Anyway I don't want to Nintendo to go more cute.  I like Mario and Pikmin and Zelda and Prime and others.  But Animal crossing is a bit too cute as is Kirby's Air Ride (simplistic too.)

SAme difference.    Look Iwata didn't come out and say hey we want to improve the game experience for our loyal gamers out there.  He didn't say hey we don't think the controls are as smooth for fps games as they could be so we want to remedy that.

He said we want Moms to find our controller inviting.  What does that mean to you?  It means to me it's gonna be simplified in some way, shape or form.  Maybe they'll be pink or yellow in color.  Maybe they'll have a microphone in them so you can say 'start' instead of hitting a button.  They probably will have a microphone in them and you can give voice commands to replace some of the buttons or dpad.  Women generally are  more communicative.  And probably would respond better to something they can talk to.

Don't get me wrong I want a trackball or something innovative for the true gamer.   But the writing on the wall so far spells something else.   If you want to guess want Nintendo is going to do I think you need to ask your Mom if it sounds inviting or not.

646
I doubt that's a trackball on the xbox next controller cause of it's position.  Your thumb would be hitting the right stick and possibly hitting the buttons at you used it.    IT looks more like a rounded xbox logo to me.

I do think a trackball or trackpad would be great for fps games.  And that's what the xbox has tons of right now.

Nintendo's controller is not going to be something revolutionary for the gamer.  It's for Mom's.  I had high hopes but after I heard Iwata speak I threw out any hope of it being something useful for say fps games.

The 2 part controller maybe could let you put different controller halves together.  SAy for fps games put in a right half with a touchpad or trackball.

The gyroscope thing could be sweet.  I wonder tho how well it would work for say aiming in an fps game cause you'd have to keep your controller position fairly neutral when you're not aiming.

Anyway I think Iwata made it clear Nintendo is making a controller that will look inviting to Moms.  That doesn't speak well for those us of looking for something revolutionary for gamers like a controller that could aim with mouse-like precision and accuracy.

This way, they are appealing to EVERYONE, which is their goal. There's no way they're going to abandon their core fanbase that's keeping them alive. Also, we haven't even seen Nintendo's next console yet, anything you hear is pure speculation, and it's not very wise to make up your mind about it before it even exists, just wait for E3 next month when they show it, i'm sure you'll be pleased.

Come on now.   They aren't going to abandon their core fanbase. I didn't say that.  They just are going more in the non-gamer and casual gamer direction than in the direction of the gamer who enjoys Nintendo games cause they do have the gameplay but would like more of that gameplay in some titles that don't involve Kirby or Peach or Pokemon.  I like Nintendo but I don't want them to get more cute and even simpler.

I didn't say I made up my mind about the REvolution either.  (tho it seems you have ignored your own wise advice and made up your mind without seeing it.    )  But it sure put a damper on it for me when Iwata said he wants a controller that looks inviting to Mom's.  Nintendo's direction is there in black and white.  LIke it or not.  In de nile or not.

Personally I wish they'd go a bit in the opposite direction.  To me their games are already good for kids and non-gamers.

Oh well to survive Nintendo probably has to focus on a niche in the market especially if they don't have 3rd party support.  And with the gameboy being their bread & butter and being aimed at kids I'm sure the Revolution will be too.  And kids have parents and Nintendo sees only half of those parents spoken to by videogame developers.  The other half are the Moms.  And that's where Nintendo is going.

Nintendo has stated the direction they are going.  They are going after the casual or non-gamer.  I was looking forward to their next gen controller until I heard they want to make the controller look inviting to Mom's.  That kinda put a damper on Nintendo's next gen for me.

I wanted to hear about innovation for the gamer who enjoys Nintendo's games and likes games in general.  I wanted a controller that brought some mouse-like precision to the console.

Instead they are going after Soccer Mom's.

I'm a new Cube owner too.  I just got one in January.  Love it.  If you haven't played Nintendo games in years (like me) then it is an entire breath of fresh air.   But I don't want my games to get more cute or too much simpler.  I like Zelda and Mario and Metroid and Pikmin and Lugis and Mario Kart.

I think NIntendo recognizes it has to go other directions.  It's the small fish in the pond here.  MS has $40 bil more in the bank and it's Windows Monopoly pours billions more into their stockpile every quarter.  Nintendo can't compete directly with MS.  Same with Sony.  Sony is a bigger fish with more resources.

I like that Nintendo goes different directions but why don't they try and go some new directions with some American style games.  If Nintendo's new controller has a trackball or touchpad it would be great for fps games.  It could really win over some hardcore American fps gamers to their console.  Nintendo should take 3 genres popular with Americans and work on some games in those genres.  And do it without Mario and co.  Nintendo games have better gameplay than any other games I've played.  Just that the avg. gamer doesn't see it cause it has Mario on it etc.  ONe less Mario Party game, one less Kirby game, etc and put some resources into some more realistic looking games.   They could even invent some new genres but do it without the cutesy look.  Do a game in the corporate office workplace.  Do a game with CSI depts in it.   You don't even have to necessarily make them violent.  You could make a cop game with lots of strange criminals not just thugs and murderers.

Nintendo needs to be like Reggie said and be an 'and' company.  Keep their core intact but expand into some other horizons and notjust  into I LOVE HALO 2 and grandma land.
