This is the strength of Nintendo - releasing polished games.

If this was EA it would be out there Nov. 1st.

Nintendo should make it a Revolution launch game, but that's another step toward the dark side.

And would it be too late in development to go back and make use of the Revolution's extra power and it's controller?

So gyros and some kind of trackpad or trackball or something in the next controller.

The gyro stuff seems like a nobrainer given that they have used that tech in 2 or 3 gameboy advance games and it seems small enough.

The hint that the controller will be good for a pikmin game means some kind of mouse-like device.  Possibly this is the gyro too (Nintendo has that tech agreement with the makers of gryo mice,)  tho possibly it is a trackpad/ball.

USb 2.0 won't be used to hook up the Revolution to pc monitors.

There will either be a port on the back of it or you'll have to buy an external vga converter box/cable like are available now for the GAmecube and other consoles

I've always thought it will be like the DS.  The tech isn't going to be something we've never heard of.

The configurable things seems to lead towards a touchpad of sorts that could be programmable.  Maybe a controller that breaks in two and comes wtih different right and left sides.

Also here's another brainstorm.  Have you guys seen that keyboard for the pc that is basically a blank slate which comes with a set of keys that stick onto to the slate?  YOu can arrange them however you want.  They are also removable and have a tactile feedback like a key on a regular keyboard.   Perhaps a tech like that will be in the controller.

1. It's a portable and people have lower standards for acceptable portable graphics.
2. Nintendo is the absolute king of the portable market and the DS benefits greatly from being associated with the Gameboy (despite Nintendo's efforts to push it as a third pillar).

People expect cutting edge graphics on consoles so the Rev just plain cannot have significantly weaker hardware than the PS3 and Xbox 360 and expect to be taken seriously, even if the big feature is really great.  The Rev also lacks the strong brand image that Nintendo has in the portable market.  In the console market the Nintendo brand is not very popular.  There already is a negative bias towards the Rev just because it is the followup to the Cube.  Inferior hardware compared to the competition would just fuel the negative bias.  The DS strategy relies on people giving the system a chance.  The Rev can't rely on anyone to do that.  It has to wow everyone at first glance.

WEll the REv can be $100 less and inferior like the GAmecube was to the Xbox. INferior tho meaning almost as good.  I mean look at RE4.  So they'll go that route again plus throw in some DS differentation by adding some new techs to their controller.  NOt to mention the whole download thing and the Gamecube backward compatibility.  Plus it looks like they'll offer DVD playback as a peripheral for those that want such a thing.

Nintendo is going after profit not market share per se.  MS can lose $3 bil and not blink.  Nintendo can't.

Also not sure I buy that Nintendo can't be less powerful and still get third party support.  PCs run games at different resolutions and the games are made to run on machines with a wide variety of power.  3rd parties could easily port to the REvolution even if it's less powerful.  IT just depends on whether the userbase is there.

I don't think Nintendo will require widescreen support.

It looks like they are going the DS route with their next gen console.  So imagine the 360 and PS3 are the PSP.  And the Revolution is the DS.  What are the differences between the PSP and DS?  The PSP looks alot better and is widescreen and more powerful.  The DS tho is $100 cheaper and has dual screens and touchscreen and built in mic.  Expect the same differentiation with the REvolution.

Nintendo will able to do some interesting things by staying at 480i.  Maybe mix in some full video into their games.  They'll surely be able render lots more objects at 480i.  And the games will surely look better than the Gamecube's.  That excites me.

Anyway NIntendo is conservative.  They don't want to break the bank on hdtv support when most folks don't have hdtv.  I think the penetration in Japan and Europe is even less than the U.S.  for instance.  Can you imagine how many folks in Japan have the 42" TV in their home?  I think Nintendo will cater to their home market first.

I did read they will have vga out support.  IF that's true than they must support 480p.  Perhaps they'll even support 800x600.

Anyway even for those that have hdtv in their, how much of your gaming will be done on one?  Alot of folks seem to have the consoles in their bedrooms or guest rooms or can only play in the living room when Mom, DAd, Wife, Husband, Brother, Sister, etc aren't in there.

608
Well seeing as how the Cube (nitially) supported 480p I don't see how it could be any lower.  480p isn't hi-def but looks good especially if they throw in some AA.   Also they are throwing in VGA support.  So I'm a bit skeptical as to why they would do that if no higher resolutions will be supported.  And are they talking from purely a hardware point of view or are they talking that most of their software won't be designed for it?

NIntendo makes a good pt tho.  Or that analyst does.  Alot of the processing power jump from the xbox to the 360 will be used merely to support the jump in resolution.  IF they kept at the same resolution they'd be able to put alot more effects on the screen and have more objects moving around from leaves to grass etc.

And others have made the pt that even if you have an hdtv you probably only have one.  HOw many that have one will do most of their gaming on it?  I know when I get one I won't be the only using it.  I have  a wife and son.  I do most of my console gaming on a 23" TV in my computer room.

Hello DS-owning PGCers.  I just grabbed a DS on the cheap off ebay for f'n cheap.

I like that touchscreen.  I just wish the handheld was bit more ergonomic for thumb play.  LIke they should have made the right edge of the touchscreen the edge of the unit (and chopped off the x,y,a,b buttons along with select and start.  They could have put a few of the buttons below the touchscreen.

Anyway I need a game.  What should I get???  The only games I even remotely know about are Yoshi, WArio and Mario.

Also will the touchscreen scuff up after lots of extended use if I don't find some kind of protector for it?  Or isn't the a problem?  Any recommendations would be sweet.

Yeah good pt.

I just got that JUngle Beat.  ADdicting game.  And get this - my Mom was in town visiting and she was frickin playing that game with my son and having a blast.  She actually was sorta hogging the thing.   Maybe getting too much into it.

And you know what?   She said the bongos don't scare her like the controller does.  I laughed man.  This is what Nintendo is talking about.       Alot of folks who are around the controller think it's no problem but for a non-gamer they are intimidating.

And JUngle Beat is one of those games that's fun for all.  Folks like myself who play more games than the average person and folks like my Mom who I haven't seen play a game ever.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Rev in Nov. Wha?

Is this is a suprise?  Nintendo said next E3 will be the Revolution's E3.

614
Nintendo needs to add a few more 'kewl' titles to their lineup.  At the same time they need to get the major third party releases to appear on the Revolution without those titles being just an afterthought.   Also they need to get some third parties to fill in the holes in their lineup.  A racing sim.  A GTA-type game.  etc.   This is what one of Nintendo's execs said.  Hopefully they'll work on that.

615
just got a DS today.  EU2 sounds great.  I'm hoping they'll have some more games like that on the DS.

616
Nintendo has already said you can expect something like the DS in terms of the concept of what they will do to the REvolution controller.  The DS hadsa touchscreen and 2 screens overall and has a mic.  Not those aren't techs you've never heard of but were never in a handheld before afaik.  That's the same sort of thing I would expect with the Revolution controller.   It's not going to be 2050 tech.  It's going to be tech that's been around and we've all heard of it but hasn't been in a console controller.

I just had a frickin brainstorm.  And I think I put two and two together.

Here's my theory...

The new Revolution controller and Nintendo's way-back backwards compatibility next gen are no coincidence.
You will be able to play the old games a new way!!!

Exactly.  That's what they are doing.  They are competing by differentiating.  Their console will be low cost, quiet, smaller, have a new controller and give you access to the backlog of Nintendo games. They want you to be able to get experiences that are different from the other consoles.

I like the strat to open up development to smaller developers.  NIntendo does need to provide some development tools tho.  It would be the minor leagues of game development.  If ideas took off they could receive more funding for a more modern look or get the small guys jobs at Ninty to work on other big games.

It would sort of be like the pc has with their mod community.  Hell that's something Nintendo could do too.  Let folks mod their games and offer up mods for download for free.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolution a lost battle?
« on: May 18, 2005, 05:15:16 PM »
Well let's face facts.  The revolution ain't going to be in first place in North America.  It ain't going to be in second place either.  It's going to be in third place.

The real question is can Nintendo still make money making a third place console?  If they can then there isn't much of a problem is there. I think if they come in at $200 it will help.  Of course 3rd party support can't hurt.  Be nice if they could get some major third party exclusives at least one a year or so to help round out their library.  Also Nintendo said they are working on some new IPs.  That is exciting stuff.

Worst case maybe they go software only on the console side.  Hell they still make bongos and microphones and even new controllers to play with their games on other other consoles.  The peripheral has been most of their innovation on the hardware side anyway.

« on: May 17, 2005, 05:27:22 PM »
Yeah it depends on price.  Also can I archive them?

anyhoo I think Nintendo's back catalog might be great for kids.  The games have generally easier controls.  The difficulty of the games tho might be too great.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The Long Tail and Nintendo's Future
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:23:55 PM »
Nintendo is one of the biggest publishers so by themselves they could probably keep their console alive.  And given that EA usually discriminates against no one you'll get games on the REvolution.

But as Nintendo said they are a content company.  To me they said it as if almost giving everyone a hint that perhaps that is what they will become in the console space eventually.  If they don't find console hardware profitable they could always make games for the ps3 or 360 and exit the console business.  Hell they could still even keep making bongos and develop new controllers to package with their games for other systems.  I don't think anything is stopping them from that.

And given their clout they could demand a pretty penny to be exclusive to one or the other console.  OR publish for them all.

They could do that and still keep their handheld business.  I think handhelds are  made more for easier and simpler games and that is aligned more with Nintendo's philosophy.  Perhaps the fact that Nintendo even started working on the Gameboy and such distracted them from the console market.  Maybe they spread themselves too thin.

The obvious comparison to Sega and what happened to them after they quit are inevitable but Nintendo is still strong financially and has way more valuable intellectual  properties than Sega does.

And like I said Nintendo could still develop peripherals for consoles.  That's where most of their innovation is anyway.  The cube didn't have a lot of innovation.  Except it had some good load times cause of the discs.

And their whole download their back catalog philosophy could work with any console.  NIntendo seems pretty conservative fiscally so if the REvolution doesn't make them a decent profit they'll abandon the console hardware market.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Bloody Zelda?
« on: May 15, 2005, 03:46:48 PM »
You know what would sell is if Link saw Zelda and pitched a tent.  Man every kid would have to buy that game.

Nintendo could cover their ass by making it fairly subtle.  Possibly making it a sort of optical illusion.

Do a few similar things with Zelda and her nipples and boom you doubled sales.

Trackball would work alot better than an analog stick for fps and rts games.   And that's the pt of the article.  A trackball by it's very nature is more precise than a stick.
