TalkBack / RE: FEATURE: The GameCube's Lost Gems
« on: September 25, 2006, 07:16:44 PM »
Great article.  You've talked me into picking up a couple of those titles on the list that were flying under my radar.  And sure made me wish I had a couple gbas laying around.

Chibi Robo is the first game that comes to mind that should be on that list.  My 2k6 game of the year.

Some folks might forget the 'Cube had Burnout 2 (or was that just me?) which was a great racing game especially with the Logitech SpeedForce Wheel.  ~$20 used at Gamestop.

NHL Hitz 2003 rocked.  Great pick up and play arcade hockey action.  Probably $6 used at Gamestop.

I really thought WarioWorld  was fun.  Graphics were crisp and the frame rate smooth.  No camera problems.  AT $50 it was short and not a good value, but now it's around $10 used and a great value.

I'll squeeze in Geist too.  Production values were decidedly mixed on this one, but something kept me going long enough to finish it.  I think the possession gameplay mechanic was new enough, and the story decent enough  to keep me playing.   Most typical shooters bore me because they are very repititious.  You won't have that problem with Geist.  It's not your typical shooter.  That's why at around $10 used it's worth checking out.

hehe.  that was pretty good.

I saw some of this series of roundtable discussions on various sites, but here's the offical one.  There's aproximately 8 parts to it. Hopefully this 'official' version hasn't been posted yet.

Iwata asks, Why we came up with the Wii?

154
Man slow news day.  Gotta complain about something I guess.  Nintendo has announced 3 AAA titles for next year.  What other company has 3 AAA titles waiting in the wings next year?

SEe I don't think Nintendo has failed except not to be #1 with their console.  I think they still remain the largest publisher of games in the world save perhaps EA.  I don't think that's exactly failing.  PLus they seem to make a profit year and year out have done so for 20 some years.  If that's failing then sign me up.

Chibi Robo is my game of the year.  Great game.

Prime 2 bombed I think because the 'Cube was on life support by then.  And I don't think the public really really like the first Metroid Prime to tell the truth.  Americans much preferred a more traditional fps game like Halo.  I was the opposite.  I was sick of the same 'ole fps game.

It took me like a year to finish Prime 2.  It was a bit too much like the first one.  The 1st one tho was a classic.  GReat game.

I thoroughly enjoyed my GAmecube experience.  I played many many great games.  I bought the 'Cube for a dirt cheap $100 with MarioKartD and a $15 off coupon.  I have to say that was a great deal.  A total steal.

IT's ironic that when the gaming media was calling the  'Cube dead it seemed like the biggest bargain in the world.  Cheap price and AAA games you couldn't find elsewhere.   I mean by late 2k4 and after it was the time to buy one.  By that time you could easily ride out the rest of its lifetime (a couple years) playing nothing but great games for next to nothing.  That's why I was always puzzled by the media's recommendations not to buy a 'Cube.

TalkBack / RE: IMPRESSIONS: Mario Strikers Charged
« on: September 18, 2006, 06:21:13 PM »
I read somewhere about Nintendo mentioning that they might have to charge less for  few of these games (Battalion Wars and Mario STrikers) that basically appeared on the Gamecube.  I hope that's the case.

Ian has selective hearing.  And it skewers dramatically one way (negative or positive?  I'll let you guess.)

He's only hearing the negative part (to him anyway) of Nintendo's message.  He's only hearing the non-gamer part.  The simple controller part.  .....

He doesn't look at the positive.  The positive in this case for him would be that only 1 or 2 NIntendo Wii titles that have been shown or announced are directly targeted at non-gamers and that probably 10 are aimed at core gamers.    The positive would be (for him again) that there's  far more core gamer titles on the DS than non-gamer titles and that there's plenty of titles that use mostly GBA type controls.

He doesn't hear the part where Nintendo says 'we are catering to core gamers' still.  (Nintendo btw has always tried to cater to everyone.)

He doesn't hear that the controller is intended to give the core gamer a new experience.

He doesn't hear that while the remote itself is simple looking, when combined with the nunchuk, it is actually quite advanced for the core gamer as well.  More advanced, from what I've seen, then a regular controller.

He doesn't see the Wii exclusive Red Steel launch title.  An exclusive 3rd party launch title.

So imo Ian has selective hearing.

To me the Wii and DS have most of the same types of games we've always had.  I see a new game or two on top of it.  I don't think you argue with this either.  Count 'em yourself.

And I see a new way to play those games, but it's not a new way in the sense that there's no buttons or d-pad or analog stick still.  There is.  Again you can't argue that either.

I see the wiimote  as the latest evolution of a controller in much the same way that controllers have always evolved.  Perhaps the change is a bit more dramatic than before.   But really all Nintendo is doing here is replacing one analog stick with the wii pointer functionality.  ON top of it they added in gyros with which they've previously experimented with in GBA games.

I think if you look at it that way then it fits in pretty well with staying traditional and yet being an extension or an evolution of the past.  Something that Nintendo has always done with controls.  And I think if you look more closer at Nintendo's strategy it takes a similar path.  Still quite traditional at it's core and yet branching out into a few new directions well.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:That $250 price tag again...
« on: September 17, 2006, 08:17:09 PM »
Yeah one reason NIntendo put in Wi-Fi is to keep things simple for consumers.

I did a similar analysis of the Wii.  Think of it like you're upgrading your pc.

I don't how many of you have pcgamed, but upgrading is a way of life.  And upgrading your cpu from 2 ghz to 3ghz is something alot of folks do.  That's a 50% speed increase.  Same with the gpu on a pc.  Upgrading your gpu so it's 50% is a major upgrade.  And last, but not least doubling your memory is also major.  And, in essence, that's what we are seeing here with the Wii.

So borrowing heavily from the OP (I actually posted this or a similar write-up a day or two ago on another forum, but not here) we present the new generation.  The ability to upgrade ala carte.  (OK not really.  All upgrades are mandatory, but I think the analog to upgrading or buying a built to order pc are appropriate here.)

Would you pay $79.99 for a new cpu, gpu and memory add-on that gave your 'Cube such speed increases as %05 or more?  .... while knowing that future games will take full advantage of said add-on?  And that these games would be available immediately?  I would.

NOw let's take the controller.  Would you pay $59.99 for a controller add-on knowing that Nintendo and 3rd parties would release countless game titles for it over the years?  FRom what I've read so far I'd have to say that I would.

HOw about WiiSports?  Ok you might not be interested in the game.  But can we agree that it's worth some value?  I think the game too will probably have more depth than folks are expecting.  The analog 3d control certainly means more depth than just pressing a button or two.  And certainly the potential of this is in competing against others.  Anyway let's play it safe and price it at $29.99.

OK you're probably see where I'm going with this (of course you you already know as it's the same thing the OP has done ,) but anyway I'm not stopping there.

OK NIntendo is whipping their online service  into shape.  For that you're going to need a connection to the internet.  Nintendo is offering a Wi-Fi upgrade for your GameCube.  IT's $29.99.  Are you along for the ride?  Count me in there too.

Next let's say Nintendo offers a a smaller case with stand for your Gamecube. It's the size of 3 DVD cases.   Tiny.  And along with that they give you a new Slot Drive disc player that will accept both GAmecube discs and larger proprietary DVD discs for newer games.  Let's not forget some kewl neon lights?  What's this worth to you?  Would you bite for $10?  I think I would.  Of course you pretty much have too if you're to play some of the new games.

Ok on to WiiConnect24.  Here's our instant-on sleep mode.  OUr power saving circuitry.  The ability to download while you sleep and receive messages from friends and NIntendo and receive weather updates and who knows what else.  What would you pay for this if you could upgrade your 'Cube?  $10?

Next how about Free online play along with access to the virtual console and the Wii channels?  Would cough up another one time fee of $10 to access all this?  If you're in for Wi-Fi then you're here I suppose.  $10 it is.

Next let's talk about the internal 512mb flash memory and sd card/usb support.  I'm pricing this at $10. A 512mb flash drive in the store is a good $10 or $20 at least.  SD card support will let you the photo browser and store VC games and updates galore.  Hopefully Nintendo does something with the USB ports.  You don't have to get this upgrade, but then you'd be using GC memory cards which have little storage for a premium price.

How about upgradeable O/S that the Wii has along the sensor bar technology?  Surely that's worth $10.

Another reason the Wii is priced a bit higher than some might think is that it's circuitry has been shrunk down to fit in such a small size.  Over it's lifetime of heavy playing you're likely to realize some power savings that will certainly add up.  Who knows what this be?  I know that Nintendo said something like 20 or 30% energy savings for alot more system processing power.  Of course the always on feature might diminish this a bit, but supposedly it uses very little power while asleep equivalent to a tiny light bulb.

Anyway I'm conveniently getting $250 here.    I don't think I priced these upgrades outrageously tho.

I think the reason folks think the Wii is a bit over-priced are two fold.

First, when Nintendo said $250 at the most the internet started hoping for $200.  (REally if folks thought $200 was aobut right then throwing in WiiSports and calling it $250 isn't that far off.)

Second, I think the gaming public is just used to getting the same thing only faster.  And thus their immediate reaction is wtf?  I think you really need to see the wiimote as Nintendo's hi-def even if you don't think highly of it right now.  That's where alot of Wii development money went and where alot of Wii manufacturing money is going to.  YOu also need to see that the cost of miniuaturization and more power/watt is hi-tech and is more expensive than not making the same console larger and more power consuming.

OH there's another reason too.  And that's that Nintendo isn't selling everything at a loss.  I think they need to do that because gaming is their only business.  They can't afford to lose $4 billion or they might get wiped out.  So maybe you pay more upfront relative to cost, but you can see why the competition video games are $10 more.  OR at least one reason they are.  You can see why MS Wi-FI adapters are $100 and their Wavebird-equivalent controllers are $50.  NOt that Nintendo won't do their share of high priced accessories, but I really think $60 for the wiimote and nunchuk is because there's alot of hi-tech stuff in those things.

OK got a book going.  over and out.

*shrug*

I'm not sure what the future holds so I'm not going to make any promises, but I'm getting it at launch. If you have doubts as to the worth of your purchase, then you should do what smart gamers have done forever: wait until the Wii has enough appealing games released at the present to be worth your purchase. Do what Iansane so sensibly does and wait for a clear reason (i.e. killer app) you have to own a Wii, or do what smart PS3 owners will be doing and wait until a price drop or larger library makes the Wii look like a worthy deal from the first day you buy it.

Edit: Billy already said he's getting it on day 1. The pull of Zelda TP is just too much for him. He still expresses his reservations and that's perfectly fine, but evidently he still believes that the system is very much worth at least $300 worth of expenditure at launch.

Exactly.

And yeah the Billy guy got treated so badly by Nintendo the last 2 generations he's buying a Wii at launch.

No matter what platform you bought you missed out on alot of great games.  So I don't think only Gamecube owners suffered.  Every console owner suffered if they sat there and counted the number of great games that didn't make it to their platform.

The bottom line is did you enjoy your Gamecube experience?  (Or were you too busy counting the number of games you couldn't get?    )

Did you not enjoy your Gamecube experience so much so that you won't be buying a Wii?

I mean I don't think (again) that a single person here doesn't wish that their platform had every great game known to man and had those games being released week after week.  Every single gamer wants that.  And you know what?  No gamers get that.

So I think folks need to look at the reality and accept it.  If you're so concerned about not getting your share of 3rd party titles then buy another console and don't buy Nintendo's.  Or buy both.  You're sending the wrong message if you bitch, but keep buying Nintendo's products.

The reason the article is retarded is that we've read this  same whining in these very forums for a year or two.  It's nothing new.  IT's sorta like he cut and pasted Ian Sane's (and friends) posts into a big long article.

Some of you all act like Nintendo has to be #1 for you to feel good in the morning.  If so then you need to seek counseling.

I have an  iMac.  I don't go about whining that Apple isn't number one.  I just enjoy my computing experience on it.

I recommend you all do the same or move on.

Not old school?  I'm not sure what that means.  I think you all forget that your not 8 yr old kids anymore.  And it's you that's changing not Nintendo.

Nintendo is releasing Zelda which seems as old school as anything.  On top of it they are going back and making an old school type of game in the form of ExciteTruck.

I encourage all you that seem to be sick of Nintendo games to play other games.

Also there's a bit of a conflict in your whining.  Some of you all seem depressed 'cause Nintendo hasn't been the #1 console the past 2 generations.  ON the other hand you're also whining that they are changing and leaving you behind.  ????

I honestly think most of the whiners will whine no matter what.  If you don't see that now then you'll figure it out sooner or later.

So this article basically says Nintendo wasn't number 1 the last two generations so he has his doubts about the Wii?

Thanks for nothing.  Not even any good arguments in there.  I was disappointed.  I was expecting some good counterpoints about the Wii and I got none.

You  don't drive a car looking in the rearview mirror.

The guy is just jaded.  I had fun on the GAmecube.  IT had over 500 some titles.  How many games does someone need?  IT's almost as if the guy is asking NIntendo to be an EA and just shovel crap out the door yearly 'cause he needs something to buy.

165

I really think MP:C is being delayed mainly because Nintendo already has a AAA game at launch in the form of Zelda and because their 3rd party showpiece is a Wii-exclusive fps game from Ubisoft.

I mean the chances that I buy REd Steel at launch just went up 10 fold 'cause MP3 is being delayed.

166
I think there is alot of truth in that.

Delaying Wario helps Super MOnkeyBall:BB also.

And delaying Metroid will help other launch fps games.

I think too that Nintendo might be throwing online play into MP3.  The timing sounds about right.  And they did it with MP:H on the DS.

I think too that NIntendo wants to keep games coming in the pipeline.  They've said so and I think not launching with 8 of their own games will help that.  And allow 3rd parties to cover alot of bases and make money too.

Looks good.  Not alot exciting actually today.  The channel stuff does look well designed and like some good family fun.  It's great they put in WiiSports, but the price is at the high end of expectations.

I'm getting one.  Can't wait to get my mitts on it.  The bottom line reason to buy remains the Wiimote for me.

Splinter Cell on the Wii will look pretty much like on the Gamecube with slight enhancements here and there.

Ubi is putting out alot of games.  Ubi put out alot of half-ass 'Cube ports.  So expect many of their Wii games to be crap.  Let's not stray away from reality here.  Just because a 3rd party is making a game for the Wii doesn't mean it will be good.  I'm not trying to be negative, but realistic.  Some of these Ubi games will be half-ass ports.

I have a feeling that Splinter Cell will be the biggest offender.  IT's just announced too late in the game and the 'Cube version ini which they are tacking on the gestures was probably no more than a half-ass port.  I hope it's not so.  But I don't have a lot of faith there.

The plastic wheel is the very definition of a sparkling innovation.  I admit it will be fun to try out and I shouldn't have compared it to a racing wheel because obviously a racing wheel is far more money (well unless you're like me and picked up the SpeedForce/pedals for $10 new)  and a real gaming wheel delivers a far better experience than the wiimote ever could in a 5 cent piece of plastic.  The way I see it is that using a 5 cent piece of plastic isn't an  upgrade to my racing experience.

171
From the Ubi press release.      ".......  The Splinter Cell franchise has always translated very well across multiple platforms."

Yeah right.  The 'Cube versions of most Tom Clancy games by Ubi were half-ass ports.  I just don't see Ubi really taking time to do a proper Wii game with Splinter Cell.  I see that alot with other 3rd party stuff.  A couple of 'em are putting in the time.  But many are just tacking on a couple of Wiimote gestures.  I hope they understand that's the recipe for failure.

Then there's that steering wheel.  A 5 cent piece of plastic.  Ok it's good for a couple laughs.  But seriously I rather have a real racing wheel.  I can only wish that the game is compatible with the Logitech SpeedForce wheel I have for the 'Cube.   (Of course it won't be, but...)

TalkBack / RE: EDITORIALS: Controller Conundrum
« on: August 31, 2006, 08:28:17 AM »
The Wii controller was developed for 2 reasons.

One was to attract a new market of consumers who don't play games much and don't like the idea of manipulating current controllers and the other was to provide a new play experience for existing gamers.

These two reasons (along with the lower price, low noise, small size, WiiConnect24, ..) let Nintendo differentiate their console from the competition.  The controller  is really Nintendo's Hi-Def.

Anyway since everyone on this board are gamers then the controller is about giving us new experiences.   It's not about being superior per se.  But about the new exeperience.  I think that's an important point.   Yeah obivously the new experience will be crap if you can't easily replicate the actions required of you with the new controller.  But I think that's true of even today's games in which you have bad controls.

Is playing WiiTennis by swinging the controller 'superior' to hitting a button?  I think that depends on what you mean by superior.  I'd like to say that it looks like more fun tho.  And the newness of the controller experience is something that will get me to purchase many games I wouldn't have otherwise purchased.
