Nintendo releases Zelda:TP only on Gamecube:  See Nintendo doesn't have any business sense.  Sony or MS would have made it a Wii release this late in the game.  Dumb Nintendo.  They are doomed.

Nintendo makes a Wii and a Gamecube version of ZElda:TP and releases Wii version 3 weeks earlier:  Nintendo is a bunch of liars.  First they say one thing then do another.  Same 'ole thing with Nintendo.  This is a bunch of crap.

Sometimes you just can't win.

Some folks can't afford the Wii yet and so for them the GC version is perfect.

He doesn't mention the spin you can put on the ball in tennis.  Either slice or topspin.  or that you can lob.  or the fact that you can do backhands or forehands.  (afaik you don't have control of that in other tennis games.)   I think the guy is expecting a miracle or something.  LIke you're playing virtual reality suddenly.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: That next-gen itch
« on: October 23, 2006, 05:45:42 AM »
Sorry dumb article.  The next-gen itch on the Wii is different.  It's the controls.  That's the exciting part.  Those that stare at screenshots will of course be sitting there thinking the worst.  Hasn't this been discussed before?

Next-gen graphics are great.  But they also do things like lead to longer loading times and crappier performance because developers always favor the graphics over the frame rate at least it seems like it.  And they really don't make a game fun.

It's a bit of a mirage.  I see the screenshots sometimes and yeah it's like Wow.  But then you go to a 360 booth and after 5 minutes you're playing the same old game.  AT least that's how it is for me.

I've had not trouble being a pcgamer in hi-res and then going to play 'Cube games on my regular Tv.  I like the sharp resolution on the pc, but again it tends to wear away after 5 minutes.  Then you're left with the game.

And really you say the same thing about the wiimote.  It won't guarantee games are fun.  Oh using it at first in any game will probably be fun.  But if the game itself is boring then the wiimote won't change things.  I think the wiimote will make games as next-gen as hd does tho.  And maybe more so since games are built on interaction.

Yeah thanks for the impressions.  I think alot of the controls will take a bit of getting used to.  Like Excite Truck.  I'm sure after you play it a few times you'll get alot better at controlling it.

I remember when I first used mouse/keyboard for a game and it felt way too spastic even tho it was intuitively easy to figure out.  It took awhile to get good at it.

Okay I just heard about a new Yoshi's Island game for the DS. OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD!!! I honestly am short of breath after hearing that. Not Wii related but it's the same conference so whatever.

Ian will never be cured.  It doesn't matter if sales of the Wii hit 10 million by March 2007 or if Nintendo corrects all the 'problems' he bitches about or if 3rd parties take the Wii to heart and release a ton of titles.  It's not about games either.

The thing that none of you have figured out is that no matter what Nintendo does Ian won't be satisfied.   Oh he might try to throw you off that trail once in awhile by throwing out a positive post, but he can't keep that up.  It's his nature to be negative.

I also get the sense the dude has no money.  I remember a post awhile back where it came to light that Ian hadn't played alot of pretty good Nintendo titles of the past couple years.

The retailers basically aren't making money on any of the consoles if those numbers are true.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Getting a Wii and selling your 'Cube?

If I can get $50 or $60 for a controller and the 'Cube and a game I'll sell it.  IT will mostly gather dust.

Well it could mean it saves time for developers and thus developers can make an even better game with the same budget.

Or it could mean that developers can now save money and time and put out crap even quicker than before.  That's the cynical point of view.

IT should benefit those that try and make great games in the first place.  And those that buy those games.

I think you take the whole easy for non-gamers thing too literally.  I sense that you somehow think Nintendo is developing a magic pill that a non-gamer takes and immediatley that non-gamer understands it all

The intuitive and small learning curve of the wiimote in a game like WiiTennis comes from the fact that everyone instinctively knows how to swing a racket.  They know the motions already.  It's just a matter of timing.

The appeal of the wiimote shape to is that someone that doesn't play games or many games will find it less intimidating to pick up.  And would relate to swinging it like a tennis racquet more than pressing a button.

It's not a magic pill tho.

Also the wii sports games are party games.  I'm not sure what you expected them to be.   The fun is playing other people.  That's where the difficulty lies too.

I mean I guess you would find any tennis game too easy since there's not much more to a tennis game then swinging the racquet.  About the only thing they could add is running.

Chess is a hardcore game.  Yet you can understand the rules very quickly.  IT's the playing the opponent part where the challenge (and difficulty) lie.

My fault, let me clarify.

When I said the game was a little too pick up and play, I was referring to the game specifically.  The game itself is way too simple for my liking.  The only difficult part--at first--was learning the controller, as there IS a curve and it WON'T come naturally like Nintendo wants everyone to believe. Even on my second play, when I had figured out the controller and could play the game adequately, Wii Tennis was still too simple. Heck, the characters zero in on the ball automatically, all you could was hit the ball, and in the short amount of time I had to play the game that got boring. This is why I'm not a fan of WiiSports, they've removed everything that makes it even a tiny bit difficult. In tennis you don't have to worry about running and staying with the ball; in baseball all you do is hit or pitch and the game does the rest.  Nintendo thinks this is an awesome feature, I and the guys who were there with me thought it was boring and a cheap excuse to get out of actually coding a "game" game.

Still sounds like your contradicting yourself.  You want to rip Nintnedo on both ends.  Too hard for non-gamers and too easy for hardcore ones.  I guess that makes it just right for the sweet spot of the market tho aka the casual gamers.

Good feedback.  Especially the point about the tennis motion having to be done before the system can register it.  Never thought of that and hopefully it's something that you get used to.

YOu sorta contradicted yourself abit tho.  You said WiiSports was too pick up and play and then you said you barely figured it out just before your time was up on WiiTennis and you wonder how grandpas and sisters are going to do if you can't figure it out.

I wouldn't take Nintendo too literally when they say they are expanding their audience.  I think too many take that to mean every game is suddenly made for grandmas.    The reality is that it's  more subtle than that.  What they will do is also make some games for those audiences and in turn hope those audiences latch onto some of their other games.  I hate to say look at the DS, but hey look at the DS.   OTher things they have done is to design the control in the shape of a remote and make the name and sytem more less intimidating.

Non-gamers too might actually have a easier time than some gamers.  They don't have to unlearn anything.

Dam it's sounding pretty good.  They should let the player throw a 'nade farther the faster he makes a tossing motion with the wiimote tho.

sounds like a rushed launch title albeit with a couple of interesting control features.  Rental or $20 or $30 price drop.

This is  bs.  It's just some folks taking what Nintendo said about the Wii Message Board (see 8 part official series of Iwata interviewing his Wii development team) and leaping to the conclusion that it applies to online games.

All Nintendo said is the Wii Message Board will be viewable by all.  No private 'mesasge boards' for different family members.  They didn't say anything about games.

I liked how the dude doens't even know that the Wii will not be 720p.  Ah try Google next time bud.

I thought his comment about 100 games for the 360 was bunk.  There's not even close to 100 games for the 360 out unless you include the Live Arcade titles.  And  even if there are, well 75% aren't worth getting.  PLus he didn't mention the Virtual Console which would give a ton of new titles plus Gamecube backward compatibility.  Plus the Wii will have plenty of titles to start with tho only 15 at launch.  Still how many titles does a guy need????  I wouldn't call it a thin launch lineup either.  The DS launch lineup was thin.  This one will be pretty solid.

Also lame how his shoulder hurt in his short time with it.  I work all dam day doing phystical labor and all dam week and he's whining about the Wii hurting shoulder.  What a joke.

Sorry, but kind of a lame article.

Well if watch that ABC news interview with REggie, he's asked if Nintendo needs the non-gamer.  HE flat out said no.  He can do fine with the core gamer crowd.  Nintendo makes plenty of core gamer games.

But to really bust things open he wants the non-gamer/casual gamer/former gamer crowd.

YOu shouldn't just look at potential success with non-gamers as Nintendo only making non-gamer games.  I mean those gamers will look for other stuff to play too.  And cash made in the non-gamer market will probably it's way into core games the way MS makes cash in Windows/OFfice and loses it on the Xbox/360.

Good interview.  Not much new except Reggie said 15 titles will be available on launch day.   30 within the launch window.

And he said the core gamer is very important to them.  And that they don't need the non-gamer to be successful.  They however want the non-gamer too.

$14.99 new at CC and GAmecrazy for Battalion WArs, Chibi Robo, Fire Emblem and Geist.

I personally picked up a used Battalion Wars at GC tonight for $12.99.  It was in the same shape as new anyway.

The first MP was better.

IF for nothing else than it came out first and MP2 just wasn't different enough.

MP was outta place on the list.  I mean if  you wanted a well received cheap game that didn't sell then you could have picked say F-Zero GX instead.

I have 3 Wavebirds.  1 regular controller.  1 set of Bongos.  And 2 Speed Force Wheels with pedals and lap attachments, 1 of which is still brand new sealed in box.  I might sell that one.
