I don't understand why this thread is allowed to stand.  When I asked the same question last month, I was told it was a POLL and it got locked.

I don't understand the rules on this forum.  Sometimes they are enforced.  And sometimes not.

General Gaming / Why do nintendo fans hate Xbox so much?
« on: February 22, 2003, 01:34:15 AM »
First off, I'm more of a PS1/2 fan than a Nintendo fan.  Second, it's not the X-box I dislike.  I think it's a fine console.

It's the lack of good software I dislike.  See, most of the games are already available for my PC, so there's no reason to buy the console... which leaves only X-box exclusives 3-4 games that I'd want.  I don't think that's a big enough library to justify purchase.

The first Zelda game I *ever* played was Ocarina of Time.  That was just 2 months ago.  See, I never owned a Nintendo until I picked up the used N64.

Not true.  When the 1937 movie Snow White became the #1 movie in sales, it was a big deal.  It was even granted 7 special Oscars for its achievement.  When in 1939, Gone with the Wind became the #1 movie in sales, it was once again a big deal.  Making lots of money has ALWAYS been important.

Square/EA is not gone.  They are just re-naming themselves to Square/Enix.  No big deal...I remember when my company was sold from Lockheed Martin to GE... we continued business as usual, just with a different name.

Nintendo Gaming / anyone else get screwed by pre-ordering zelda EARLY?
« on: February 20, 2003, 11:04:55 AM »
Advice: Goto another store like Electronics Boutique or Circuit City or Best Buy, and buy Wind Waker to get the free bonus disc.  Then go back to toysrus and demand a refund.

My Electronics Boutique actually *reserved* their copies.  They hid them in the back and only gave to those with receipts.

I think Nintendo should convert ALL the N64 games.  At ~32 megabytes a piece, you could squeeze 46 games onto a single disc.  Perhaps call it "The Nintendo 64 Classics Collection" or something similar.

atariage.com, lemon64.com, psxnation.com are all better forums.  You can create polls, ask dumb newbie questions like "What's a 51 card?", or ask "What do you think about...?" without getting locked.  WHY?  Because the moderators on those forums are not anal.  They let you exercise your free speech with only two restrictions: No curse words... no insults.

Here at gamecube.com, there are so many restrictions that it's nearly impossible to start a topic without violating one of them.  The excessive rules stifle conversation and defeat the purpose of having a forum.

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda Wind Waker discussions
« on: February 19, 2003, 12:25:28 PM »
I played the Zelda demo today at Circuit City, but was unimpressed.  The dungeons looked okay, but the boss fight looked terrible.  I felt like I was watching one of those cheapo-70's cartoons (think Scooby Doo).  I had  trouble focusing on its face, because of the cartoonish graphics.  It looked noisy.  The boss just looked... terrible.  Not at all scary... almost comical.

Sorry if that offends some of you.  It *is* my opinion though, and I do have the right to express it.  So please, no immature insults or childish flaming.

What are your thoughts on various game commercials?

My thoughts:
PIKMIN = Nintendo showed this a lot when GameCube was released.  I remember thinking, "What an odd-looking game.  Looks boring too.  If that's what modern games look like, I think I'll stick with the 16-bit stuff."

MARIO SUNSHINE = "Gee... going around and cleaning stuff.  I can do that right here in my own home.  Pass."

YOSHIS ISLAND = "Yep... that was an awesome game!  Good commercial."

BUFFY = "Cool my favorite show.  But why does it look like crap?  Sounds like crap too.  Pass."

FINAL FANTASY 10 = "Wow... look at those graphics.  And look at that beautiful girl!"  This is the game that convinced me to buy a PS2.

METROID PRIME = "Cool!!!  Awesome graphics.  It's like an interactive Buck Rogers!"  This is the game that convinced me to buy a GameCube.

That's because N64 had carts, and there wasn't any storage space for pre-rendered CGI videos.  Nintendo didn't have a choice!  But now Nintendo has a disc-based console, and they have the option to store pre-rendered CGI videos and play them back during the game (like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil).

Anyway, Rick Powers says there is some pre-rendered CGI movies, so that answers my question.

Buy any console that's *not* made by Microstooge.  That leaves PS2, GameCube.
If you can only afford one console (sad), PS2 is the way.  It has more games and more variety than any other console.  And please don't say, "PS2 games suck."  Only a biased fanboy believes that nonsense, because my PS2 games are just as much fun as my Mario, Zelda, and Metro games.

By the way, yelling at people and shaking your fist at them sends this message: NINTENDO GAMERS ARE IMMATURE AND CHILDISH.  I suggest you use a different approach that does not confirm the "Nintendo is for children" image.

Nintendo Gaming / Reviews for GC games: How much do you depend on them?
« on: February 18, 2003, 12:51:26 AM »
REVIEWS SUCK.  I rely on word-of-mouth from other gamers.  I go into a forum and say, "What games should I buy?" and wait to see what they say.  The games that are talked about over and over (Pikmin, Final Fantasy 10, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Ocarina of Time) are the ones that I buy.

Unfortunately, that methodology didn't work here, because the moderators don't allow people to ask questions like that.  Dumb.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo, the dare devil?
« on: February 17, 2003, 12:58:16 PM »
When I said Zelda: Wind Waker was borrowing from RPGs, here's what I was referring to:

"The biggest real change, and it is a drastic one, is that Kaze no Takuto has taken on a stronger RPG design than any of its predecessors. While battles are still real-time and there are no experience points or “leveling up”, the story takes a far more prominent role than Zelda fans are used to. It’s not that the game’s design has been compromised to account for more plot, but rather that the same amount of story progression always infused into the series is now much more effective. To put it bluntly, the story is great. It’s creative, motivating, and unpredictable. It looks at the Zelda mythos from an entirely new perspective, and longtime fans of the series will be delighted to see a new take on the legend."

"The other RPG-like difference is the overworld. ... Link and his boat have an unbelievably huge world to traverse, and travel becomes a major new theme for the game. For the most part, it works wonders. The sea is literally full of things to do, monsters to defeat, and places to explore. If your favorite part of Final Fantasy games is exploring the overworld for secret places, you will have many, many hours of fun in Zelda’s nautical landscapes."

Source: Planet GameCube: http://www.planetgamecube.com/reviews.cfm?action=profile&id=264

So basically, the new Zelda is borrowing the ideas of a detailed, in-depth story and sidequests from already-existing RPGs.

Nintendo Gaming / GameCube Newbie questions

I'd like to know why the moderators closed this thread.  You have a newbie here asking questions about GameCube, but instead of encouraging him to join the Nintendo crowd, you close off his topic and CENSOR him.  NOT FRIENDLY.  So, what's the deal mods?  I don't get it?

hello all, this is my first post here. nice forums you guys got. i currently own a ps2 that i got about a year ago. im wanting to purchase a gamecube possibly this week but first i need some money, so i plan on going to game exchange and selling my dreamcast or n64 (whichever sells for more) and all of its games (have about 15 dc games and 20 n64) and also a few of my ps2 games. any idea how much they buy stuff for? also, which game should i get with my gamecube and is it worth the $150?
Here's the best deals for GameCube:
- Buy a GameCube for $150/Get Metroid Prime or Resident Evil free (there are 2 others games...but don't bother with them).
- Buy Zelda: the Wind Waker for $50 and get Zelda: Ocarina of Time free (while supplies last)

Other "must-have" games worth getting are Pikmin, Eternal Darkness.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo, the dare devil?

I feel like I'm in a room full of teenagers, and all of them are experiencing puppy love.  Except the object of that love is not some cute vixen, but a company named Nintendo.

Just look at this topic.  You guys are bending over backwards to make Nintendo look like a goddess on a pedestal.  You claim Zelda was first in cel-shading.  Um, No.....  You claim Zelda is setting new trends in gaming.  Again, No.....  You claim Nintendo is exploring new territory by releasing the same old puzzle/adventure game that they've been releasing for the last 15 years.  Sorry, No.....  I've played the Wind Waker demo.  The dungeons play exactly the same as Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  They haven't changed it.   IN REALITY, Nintendo is no more "daring" or "risk-taking" than Capcom, or Sega, or Sony, or Activision, or any other top-of-the-line game developer.  IN REALITY, Zelda: WW is merely taking a tiny step forward... nothing daring or radical.

A game like Mr.Mosquito is radical/daring.  Zelda is not.

My advice to some of you: Take off the rose-colored glasses.   Nintendo is just a game company, not a love partner.  Try to be objective.

re: The Sims.  I thought there was a 2D version on old 16-bit computers.  Perhaps I'm thinking of another game called "Little Computer People" by Activision?

His ears bigger?  Does that give Ganon some sort of advantage in battle?

I hope my Electronics Boutique does run OUT of Zelda Bonus discs.  I couldn't get to the store today, because of the snowstorm making roads impassable.  Hopefully everyone else stayed home too!  Hopefully I can get dug out tomorrow to get to the store before anyone else does.

Nintendo Gaming / Does Wind Waker have pre-rendered videos (FMVs)?
« on: February 16, 2003, 04:39:46 PM »
Yes.  Console-generated cutscenes are what Zelda: Ocarina of Time used.  (And all other N64 games except RE2.)
Pre-rendered videos are what disc-based games like Final Fantasy use.

Based upon Rick's comments, it sounds like Wind Waker is all console-generated cutscenes with perhaps 10-15 minutes of pre-rendered videos.  Kingdom Hearts was similar.  Very few pre-rendered videos were used in KH.  The story was told through console-generated cutscenes.
