Not "every major console" has an expansion slot.  Atari 2600 (most popular console of early 80's) did not have any.

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda On Phillips CDI
« on: February 28, 2003, 02:01:22 AM »
I find the other stuff to be trivial and unimportant to answering the question, "Why is Zelda on Philips' CDI?"  All you need to know is that Nintendo hired Philips to create a CD-ROM for S-NES, and that as part of that deal, Philips was granted license to use Zelda on their CDI console.  The other stuff is not needed for answering the key question.

Only perfect games should get perfect 10s.  And Zelda: WW is not perfect.

For you, but not for my 3-yr-old nephew.  He'd need all the extra hearts.

And yes, I've heard a several people complain that modern PS2/GC games are too easy.

I think the megabits vs. megabytes argument is thoroughly dead.  Not only did you guys beat the dead horse, you sliced it into spare ribs, and served it for dinner!

For those who are interested, here are the sizes of various N64 games:
4 megabytes Robotron64
8 megabytes Mario64
16megabytes Banjo-Kazooie
24megabytes Donkey Kong 64
32megabytes Zelda: Ocarina & Masks / Turok 2
64megabytes Resident Evil 2 (includes 25MB of full-motion videos)

Yes.  As I said in my last post, in a normal setup with a Composite Video RCA plug, the color bleeds all over the place... creating a blurry picture.  The S-VHS/ S-Video cable separates the Color signal from the Picture signal and prevents that happening.  You can see the difference even on tiny TVs.

The difference between S-VHS cable and Component Video (the 5-plug setup) is not visible to the naked eye unless (a) you have a magnifying glass or (b) you have a 100" HDTV.

ASIDE: I record television using a Super VHS tape recorder.  It has near-DVD quality.  Just curious: Is it possible to record directly to a PC hard drive?

STRAWMAN ARGUMENT.  I did not say we should make games shorter or eliminate saves.  I said we should make them harder with multiple difficulty settings.

If I was programming Final Fantasy 10, I'd include a "medium" and "hard" setting.  The medium setting would multiply all the monsters HP by 2.0, and the hard setting would multiply their HP by 3.0.  I would *love* to go back through FF10 with all the monsters having triple their HP... it would make the game a LOT more challenging than it is now!  And fun!

With Zelda I'd change the number of initial hearts (as I said in the first post)... depending upon if you are a Zelda God (1 heart) or a Child (10 hearts).

Mario64... not sure what I'd do there.  Maybe turn off the "coins=life" part of the game so players have to be careful not to get hurt.  That would be fun!

And so on.  IMHO, difficulty settings enhance replay value.  Children can choose the "child" level so they don't get frustrated.  Adult players can run through the game once on "easy"... and then challenge themselves a second time on "hard".  That way there's more to a game than just "getting to the end" of it.  You can continue to challenge yourself to be better-and-better.

The difference between Super-VHS/ S-Video and Component Video is not visible on a standard TV.  You need a hi-resolution HDTV and even then you'd likely need a magnifying glass.

The reason Super-VHS/ S-Video is so much better than the single RCA composite plug is because chroma is kept separate... and that prevents color bleeding/blurring.  Maybe I'll go pick up mine now.

I don't think we've changed.  I started Mario Bros 1 and Mario 64 at the same time (last November).  Mario 64 I beat within 2 weeks.  Mario 1 is still not finished.  Games have definitely become a lot easier since the 3D revolution.

Of course it wouldn't matter if games had difficulty settings... my original point.  Game difficulty should be settable by the user (like RE's easy/medium/hard).

Okay well, I guess I'm the only one on this board who likes classic games.  I bought Activision Anthology, Final Fantasy Chronicles/Anthology, and will buy Final Fantasy Origins.  I enjoy the old games just as much as the new ones.  True the graphics on Mario64 don't look as good as modern games, but a fun game is a fun game regardless of appearance.
(goes off to play the ~10-yr-old Super Nintendo FF2)

So would you older peeps out there say 300$ is alot of money towards a nice used car?

Buy Halo for the PC for $50 and save yourself some money.

CAR: The car is cheap.  It's the $1500 a year insurance bills that kill you.  For that reason, I didn't get my first car until I needed it (age 18...driving to college).

JOB: You only get ~$100 a week at your age.  That may sound like a lot to you, but it really isn't.  College grads can get ~$1000 a week...

I'm sorry, I don't understand your point?

If Nintendo squeezed 40 of the best N64 games onto a single disc, I'd *definitely* buy it.  Buying 40 games on 1 disc ($50) is cheaper than buying 40 carts plus a used N64 (~$500).  I'm sure a "N64 Classics Collection" would be a Best Seller among GameCube fans.

Difficulty: My primitive Atari 2600 had difficulty switches and multiple game variations per cartridge, so each player could tailor the game to his/her liking.  You could make Pac-Man run fast or slow.  Make the ghosts fast or slow.  Your choice.

Why don't modern games have this?  For example, Zelda: Wind Waker could have an option to start with 1 heart instead of 3 to increase difficulty.... or 10 hearts for children.  Why don't modern games do this?  I think they should.

Nintendo Gaming / The Wind Waker to recieve "unprecedented" score from EGM.
« on: February 24, 2003, 04:59:41 AM »
Could it be Zelda: Wind Waker is a little *too* realistic?  I'm sure exploring new continents with Columbus and Ponce de Leon was a hell-out-of-a-lot-of-fun, but those loooooong 4 month ocean crossings must have been excruciatingly boring!

I remember playing a game called MicroProse Pirates! on my old C=64, and the ocean sailing was monotonous at times.  It just took soooo loooong to get anywhere.  Fortunately, the programers were smart enough to include a "FAST TIME" option to make time flow 4x faster.

Maybe that's what Zelda needs?

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda On Phillips CDI
« on: February 24, 2003, 04:52:41 AM »
It's not really that complicated.  (1) Nintendo hired Philips to design a CD-ROM for the Super Nintendo.  (2) In exchange, Nintendo granted a license to Philips to use Zelda on the Philips console (CDI).

According to that link, the main flaw with the games is that they are side-scrolling platformers (like Adventure of Link), and people don't like that style.

Or..... they could just take the "Top 40" games from the Nintendo64, put them on a Gamecube disc, and sell them for $50.  I'd buy that game instantly.

HOW TO MAKE GAMECUBE DOMINANT (A RETURN TO NES-style MARKETING)                       Just click here

Reading this article makes you wonder if Nintendo is the same company. They did what it took to make the NES dominant in the late 80's..... they should be following the same tactics now.
.

.

GREY NINJA WROTE:
"I think that the guy is WAAAAY off base on his information. There is an element of truth to it, but it's told from a warped perspective."

Nintendo was ordered by the U.S. Courts to refund $25,000,000 to consumers.  That's not warped.  That's a FACT.
Nintendo used many similar tactics in the late 80's, as Microsoft uses today.
Nintendo became dominant because of those tactics.

Therefore if Nintendo wants GameCube to be dominant, they need to repeat/follow exactly the same tactics they used for the NES. Microsoft *is* using those tactics and now they are #2.  As the saying goes, "Nice guys finish last."

I was playing Pac-Man this morning.  Does that mean I was playing a RPG? (end sarcasm)

I think RPG can be clearly defined as thus: A game where characters are assigned around a dozen different stats, and battles are determined by complex mathematical calculations involving these stats.  Key words: Stats, Complex Calculation.  Pac-Man obviously doesn't fit that definition.  Nor Mario.  Nor Zelda.

For every 1 GameCube sold last month, almost *6* PS2s were sold.

How can anyone feel good about that?  GameCube's market share right now is comparable to the Sega Master System in the late 80's.  Or the Sega Saturn in the late 90's.

Nintendo Gaming / My thoughts on various Nintendo commercials

PIKMIN = Nintendo showed this a lot when GameCube was released.  I remember thinking, "What an odd-looking game.  Looks boring too.  If that's what modern games look like, I think I'll stick with the 16-bit stuff."

MARIO SUNSHINE = "Gee... going around and cleaning stuff.  I can do that right here in my own home.  Pass."

YOSHIS ISLAND = "Yep... that was an awesome game!  Good commercial."

BUFFY = "Cool my favorite show.  But why does it look like crap?  Sounds like crap too.  Pass."

METROID PRIME = "Cool!!!  Awesome graphics.  It's like an interactive Buck Rogers!"  This is the game that convinced me to buy a GameCube.
