Nintendo Gaming / Games with "hidden" loading times
« on: March 31, 2003, 02:44:42 AM »
Starfox Adventures
Metroid Prime

While most games pause and give you a blank screen (like Zelda:WW) to load the next level or room, the above games hide the loading time by streaming data from the disc to the console as your running down tunnels.  Any other games use "hidden" loading times?

I never noticed the game jump, but it does sometimes stop briefly.  You see, Starfox uses "hidden" loading between levels.  It loads the data as you're running from level to level, but sometimes you run faster than the data can load.  When that happens, it causes the game to momentarily stop.  The same thing happens with Metroid Prime sometimes, but far less often.

Well hat's cool.  Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but for me, Banjo-Kazooie was just like Mario.  Same moves and same goals (collect shiny gold stars/jiggies) , but with larger levels (about 2-3 times larger) and more interaction between characters (the villian talks to Banjo the whole way through the game).  And Banjo's graphics were just beautiful, especially the last Four Seasons level where you visit the same level over-and-over, but in different times of the year: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.  Things you do in Spring can effect what happens in Fall.  VERY cool.

If you didn't like Banjo-Kazooie, you must have hated Mario 64 too.  Is that true?

What was your opinion of Goldeneye?

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime in Progressive Scan.....wow!

I have a question about progressive scan and this game. When I told the gamecube to use progressive scan mode, there were excessive jaggies. If I used interlaced mode, and had my tv (wega xbr) handle the progressive scan, it looked much better. Why is this so?

Also, why do you say NTSC is 29.97 frames per second? Isn't the frame frequency determined by the electric frequency of 60 cycles per second?

That was a LOUSY explanation.  It doesn't sound like you have any clue what "progressive" means.  So, why did you bother discussing something you don't understand?  All you do is spread mis-information.

Here's the REAL answers:
interlace = The TV draws odd horizontal lines on one frame (1,3,5,...) and even horizontal lines on the next frame (2,4,6,...).  Repeat that cycle 30 times a second.
progressive = The TV draws ALL the lines (1,2,3,4,5,6,...) in a single frame.
The words "interlace" and "progressive" are self-explanatory if you think about their meaning.  Interlaced mode interlaces the lines together on separate frames.  Progressive mode draws the picture progressive down the screen without skipping lines.

Nintendo Gaming / Voice Acting - Yay or Nay?
« on: March 29, 2003, 03:37:37 AM »
I just turned on Wind Waker for the first time, and watched the intro.  Without the voices, it feels like I'm watching an old Super Nintendo game (think Yoshi's Island or Metroid): Still graphics and text overlaid with music.

Minus the voice acting, I can't show this to my 3-yr-old nephew.  He can't read yet.  With Kingdom Hearts, I recorded the game and edited it into a 2-hour movie, and my nephew could understand the voice acting and comprehend the story.  Ditto Final Fantasy 10.  I won't be able to do that with Wind Waker with its lack of voices.

I remember when I was ~20 in college I ran into a girl that I was very attracted to.  I was returning a semi-porn movie (Alyssa Milano was naked in most of it), and she asks, "What's the video about?"   ME:  "Errrr... uh... well, it's about this girl who goes off to college, and how she adjusts to the new lifestyle and has...um... new experiences with all the people she meets.  Yeah, that's it."

Something about the way she smiled told me she knew what the movie was about, but she wanted to see me squirm. ;-)  If the same scene happened today (at age 30), I'd probably just say, "It doesn't really have a story.  I rented it so I could see Alyssa Milano naked."  I've come to realize that most women are more sexual than guys and don't mind a little bit of porn.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime Discussion
« on: March 29, 2003, 02:28:42 AM »
Difference in perceptions = difference in opinions.  Why can't you just accept that my opinion is different from yours?  I found Metroid Prime to be about as boring as Starfox Adventures.  The End.

Nintendo Gaming / I am a 31 year old new GC owner

30, single, and I've been gaming since Atari.  Although... I did take a decade-long break during my college years and first few years working (1992-2002).  The Nintendo64 and Playstation didn't impress me with their graphics.  Then I saw Final Fantasy 10 in action, and I HAD to have it.  And thus, my gaming addiction was reborn. ;-)

P.S.    I just finished the game.  They should have used Crystal as the main character.  Looking at her would be far more interesting than looking at Fox. ;-)

You hit the nail on the head.  Solving puzzles is annoying when there's no reward for your effort.  (Then again, I think solving Zelda's puzzles is annoying too...but that's a different topic.)

You didn't like Tricky?  I did.  I thought he was cute and never found him annoying.  He stayed out of my way 99% of the time.  It's nice to have a sidekick throwing in his/her thoughts on what's going on.

NWR Feedback / Anyone else having trouble with recent PGC WMV files?
« on: March 28, 2003, 01:29:42 PM »
Ugh... divx requires a separate player.  Why not just use standard MPEG?  (just curious)

I used to have problems with WMV files, but then Media Player did an automatic codec download, and now everything's cool.  Maybe you just need a newer player?

Read Shakespeare's plays written in Middle English and you'll learn all kinds of new ways to use words (or even obsolete words).  Imagine that... stuff you read in English class was actually useful for something.
