Yep. "Optimus Primal" chose his name in honor of the legendary Autobot leader "Optimus Prime".

Actually, "Optimus Primal" became his name after his self-image updated to include his animal form. That's why he and his crew had to introduce themselves to each other after they emerged from the ship. They probably don't even really know who they were or what they were like before the change. It's like how when you dream of the past, you see yourself as your current self, not as the you that was present at that time.

But yeah, he's still an entirely different Bot than the original Optimus Prime. In Beast Wars, Megatron (named after Megatron) once reffered to Primal as an "Optimus unit" which suggests that there were a lot more Transformers like them on the Beast Wars-era Cybertron, probably wherever a heroic leader was needed, like Captaining ships and whatnot. But Primal was the only one who got stuck on that planet with Megatron. Which of course, makes Beast Machines all the more pathetic.

But here in Canada, they supposedly don't like the word "Wars" in animated shows. Therefore, "Beast Wars" became "Beasties", and another one of Mainframe's shows, "War Planets", became "Shadow Raiders". Yeah, I don't get it either. Peace-loving Canadians, we are.

It's because YTV and Mainframe are/were really close. YTV supported Mainframe before they were even Mainframe. YTV just "asked" about toning down the "Wars" bit, and Mainframe was happy to oblige.

The first cartoon, was developed by Marvel and had a comic book tie in. The comic actualy came first though and theres a serious split ammong transformers fans over which is offical cannon.

Both are wrong. The toys are cannon. The cartoons and the comics are seperate continuities which borrow from each other.

Quote

Beast Wars basicaly took story elemnts from both the cartoon and Comic so they really made tings more confusing.

At first they were trying to make it in a "bubble" universe, which could be the sequel to any version, but wasn't specific enough to nail down, but then it became clear enough to be a third contrinuity, borrowing from the other two.

Quote

G1 was what i grew up on and will always be the best in my mind, BW was pretty good only cuz it had good animationa nd the story tried to fit in with G1 a lot, but there were inconsistancies, like how Starscrams Ghost showed up in BW yet Unicron restored him to life in the G1 cartoon rigth near the end. So he would still be alive when BW took place.

He could've still died again in the supposedly vast span of time between G2 and the Beast Wars era. Plus a second trip to ghost form would've made it very clear that there was something odd about his spark.

Quote

Also BW tookplace in the PAST so his ghost still wouldn't be around because he was still alive in that time frame, go figure.

He was a ghost in the Beast Wars era, and he passed through the transwarp tunnel which took him to prehistoric Earth in the same way the Maximal and Predacon ships did.

They better not keep the costume-selling bit...That's the biggest turnoff EVER for a console gamer ever...Since we'll be paying for the game they better be including everything when they ship it; none of this micropayment bullcrap...

Well, the cute Fox costume pic you showed is in their "Illust Contest" section. I think someone won an I-Pod for designing that one for them. Technically, I think it didn't exist before they shipped the game. There is something appealing about a game that keeps getting improved. By it's fans even.

But yeah, I do prefer to be able to pay one reasonable amount and get the entire experience. Unfortunately, I think the "online" movement wants to make that a thing of the past.

This is really starting to look good for Nintendo, If a developer that hasn't created anything for you for 2 generations yet created stuff for everyone else desided to get back on board for the Revolution it really can only been seen as a good thing.

Just to mention, Tecmo isn't making the game. A Korean company called "Ntreev Soft" made the original game, and Tecmo is hiring them to make a Rev version. Still more than Tecmo did for the N64 and Cube put together.

The PC version of the game is free to download and install and play, and even free to play online, but they make their money by selling you things like new costume downloads. They're probably going to keep the costume-selling system for the Rev version. I doubt the game would be a free download though.

Personally, I think the PS2 could push more polys than this game does. And the rich textures and details come from it being a PC game, so I don't know how much of that would translate into a console port, especially since we don't even really know what the Rev can handle. But they style looks nice enough.

It's because of the watermark they added.

Something like GIF or PNG-8 is great for GBA screenshots because they're 8-bit, so they can preserve the color-limited image perfectly, but once you start trying to add extra colors they just start to maul things. And since PGC's watermark is semi-transparent, it adds a lot of new colors.

What PGC could probably do is make GBA pics in PNG-24, and then run them through a PNG compression program, which should give bitmap perfect image quality in the small area around the watermark, and would still have GIF-like data compression over the rest of the image, without the ugly JPEG artifacts.

My Cube has a Digital Out port. How else would I have described what one looked like?

And yes, if you really wanted Progressive Scan on your Cube, there wasn't a lot stopping you. But Nintendo seemed to be constantly trying to present this image that the GameCube was unsuitable for higher-end entertainment centers (see the lack of DVD and Dolby Digital support), they made you jump through hoops to get the component cable, and then (while cutting the rarely-used port) they flat out told us that more than 99% of GameCube owners didn't want Progressive Scan.

The idea of the Rev supporting Progressive Scan, and only Progressive Scan (as in, no S-video or A/V cables or R/F switches) is amusing because of that previous stance. Of course it's obvious that those Rev prototypes were ProScan-only because they wanted the Rev to be seen (by whoever they were showing it to) in it's best possible form, while they tell us about the next thing that we apparently don't want, which is HD.

TalkBack / RE: Activision to Make Transformers Games
« on: February 14, 2006, 01:46:03 PM »
Original Transformers cartoons (Generation 1) = Very good, but you have to forgive certain moments as a sign of the times. Quite a number of them.

Transformers the Movie = Excellent. Even today.

Post-movie cartoons (Generation 2) = Very good. Underrated.

Marvel comic books = From what I've read, I'd give them a "high good".

Decade-long absence = All good things yadda yadda.

Beast Wars/Beasties = Ranges from "good" to "excellent". A breath of fresh air.

Beast Machines = Horrid. Absolutely horrid. I really tried to like it, but it just did everything wrong, and ruined Beast Wars while it was at it.

Transformers: Robots in Disguise = For the kiddies. Could have been amusing if it wasn't so painfully obviously butchered.

Transformers: Armada/Energon/Cybertron cartoons = Mediocre.

Transformers: Armada/blahblah comics by Dreamwave = Beautiful and exciting to behold. But then you read them and you find out that they're hollow and meaningless and never go anywhere. Then Dreamwave went bankrupt because apparently being the #1 comic book in America doesn't earn you anything. Avoid anything that wasn't written by Simon Furman.

New Transformers comics by whoever is making them = Don't know. Don't really care. My interest has been lost. Need to save money and find some 80's G.I. Joe boxsets.

Live action movie = Dreading it. If it turns out good, then fine. But I'm not even holding out hope for it.

edit: i just checked it and its different!!

All the versions of the Rev hardware Nintendo has been showing to the media have had the GameCube's Digital Out port on the back, and only the Digital Out port, and were likely meant to be hooked up with GameCube Component Cables and run in Progressive Scan (although I don't know if anyone's ever seen a Rev actually running anything). Which is odd because Nintendo keeps telling us that graphics don't matter, and that GameCube owners didn't want Progressive Scan, and that Rev owners don't want HD. Plus it doesn't explain where the sound would be coming from.

The port shown here isn't the Digital Out port (which has the top two corners cut off, not the right two). Nor is it the classic Multi Out port from the SNES/N64/GameCube (which has all four corners cut off, and a tab on the top). Nor is it the Famicom Disc System's RAM expansion pak's cable.

It was rumored back when Nintendo slashed the Digital Port from the Cube that Nintendo had figured out a way to deliver Progressive Scan through the Multi Out port (with a new Component Cable), so perhaps that's what this is, but then why would they lock out the traditional A/V and S-video cables? If they carved a notch in the top of this port, then it could fit the old cables, and you'd still be unable to fit the new Progressive Scan cable into an old unit.

I don't really know what to say on that subject. I think too little has been said by Nintendo about the shell/shells to match with everyone's opinions on them.

That said, even if the shell has the full capabilities of an N64 controller (right down to the expansion slot), I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't let people use GameCube devices whenever they fit the situation.

But, as the original newspost suggested, Nintendo might be trying to force Revmote functionality down every Rev game's throat.

I think the automatic Talkback posts are just temporarily messing up the "posted" time on some things (until the automatic post stops being "new", I think).

There's just not making you happy. If Nintendo didn't update the shell they'd be screwing over fans by ruining ports (again). If they do change it you claim bloody murder for some reason you still haven't explained.

I'm not really "claiming bloody murder". And I guess the simplest explanation is "options". I think they should make the shell as good as they can, but we don't know what Nintendo's going to do with it, and if a Rev game comes out that happens to be fully-playable with a GCN controller, and if the Rev has four GameCube controller ports, then you should be able to do that.

Quote

There has never been a system in history where you didn't need a new controller to play the new games for it.

There's been a clear reason for every change, and I think the reason needs to be good enough. Needing custom link cables for the GameBoy micro is an example I'd give of the reason not being good enough. The Revmote is a good reason. I'm worried that the Shell might not be a good enough reason.

Here's what I think my current point is.

In the NES era, Nintendo abandoned the joystick in favor of the D-pad, and they ushered in a revolutionary new control style.

With the SNES, Nintendo refined the d-pad-based controller into what is quite possibly the most perfect controller of it's kind.

Then with the N64, Nintendo revolutionized again with analog. It wasn't perfect, but analog carried it.

Then with the Cube, Nintendo refined the analog controller, reacting to everyone else's refinement of their idea, but it was clearly flawed. Me Ian and a number of other people could plainly see it, but Shiggy said it was perfection and half the Nintendo fanbase had their heads too far up his butt to see otherwise.

Now Nintendo's revolutionizing again, with a 3D space controller. And if you ask me, it's far from perfect. It's strengths (as great as they appear to be) are going to have to carry it's flaws yet again. And I know I'll probably be flamed for saying it.

And at this same time, Nintendo is finally admitting that they failed to perfect the analog controller with the Cube. And that they're trying again with the shell. I've got mixed feelings on the matter. On the one hand, I think they're right to make improvements. On the other, I wonder if maybe they're a little too late for that. They've moved on to the Revmote. Also, the GCN controller didn't exactly suck, and any improvements would likely be minor. Is that significant enough to justify an incompatible redesign? Should we just allow Nintendo to go back on their 2002 claims, and make similar new claims, without raking them over the coals a little? I think I'm starting to ramble, but those are just some of my thoughts on the matter.

If they release a shell with "enough" buttons then you get the best of both worlds. Using the GCN controller would be stupid on all front...

I just don't get the problem...you have to get new controllers with every system, duh?

And just in case any of you were getting any bright ideas about using a GameCube controller for those older-style games, you can forget about it. We're adding a second L Trigger and a Select Button to the shell, so now you couldn't even use a GameCube controller if you wanted to.

Do you really see them coming out with a "Donkey Konga Revolution" and giving away more free bongos? I don't.

If a Rev game needs a GameCube controller/peripherial, there's another alternative to "It gets a custom shell". It's called "The game gets cancelled" (or more accurately, it never makes it past the design stage). Or maybe it just gets crippled.

BTW, you can now say to goodbye to the idea of using GameCube DDR mats and Keyboards and Microphones and what-have-you as Revolution accessories. They're all officially dead now. Time to buy now ones. Ones that you can plug little Revmotes into. And you know that this time around they're sure to last through more than a couple of years and a number of games you can count on one hand.

Here's an odd low-priority bug. The automatic Talkback threads are messing with the "blue folder" new post indicators.

Like, just a little while ago, a new Talkback thread appeared, and then Infernal bumped up another thread. The new Talkback thread doesn't appear as a blue folder, even though it was new. But more than that, on the main "Forums" page it indicated that there were no new "blue folder" posts at all in the Talkback forum, not even Infernal's post.

It still said Infernal's post was the newest one, but it wouldn't give it a blue folder. Not until you entered the Talkback forum and saw it without it having been lumped in with Blue-proof PGC NewsBot post. This is different from last night when it said the newest post in Talkback was from sometime last April.

Edit: I just went back in time to November 2004, and posted in Talkback. Take that, McFly!

This blows.

Nintendo doesn't have to worry about devs "dumbing down" their games to meet the GameCube controller. The two-button Revmote is the standard controller. It will (barring some insanity) ship with each and every Revolution system. The games will clearly be built with the Revmote being assumed to be the standard. The GameCube controller is an accessory.

Nintendo just locked out that accessory. And you guys are apologizing for it.

When third parties make PS3/Xbox2 games available on the Rev, not only will the Rev version likely be graphically inferior, and not only will the gameplay likely be dumbed down to fit a two-button controller (with maybe a 3D space control gimmick tacked on), but you won't be able to choose between the shell and a Wavebird.

Yay for Nintendo.

Yes, they removed it (along with the audio in the other games) in order to replace it with a higher quality redone English dub. But then Inafune said "no improvements for the 2D fans" and yanked the new dub, and Capcom didn't see the point in re-installing the Japanese dub to fill the void. They (like Namco) think that Americans would rather listen to silence than Japanese voice acting.

The dummy cart is stubby. And it's not just that it's avoiding the contacts. Compare the notch in the side to a GBA cart.

And Nintendo can't switch to making stubby GBA games, because they won't fit in a GBA (any version) or regular DS. Of course, if Nintendo came up with some sort of enhanced DS Lite-exclusive games that utilize something or the other that the regular DS doesn't have, and is more suited to the GBA slot than the DS slot, then that would be perfect. I smell a megaton.

Nintendo puts out catalogs like these all the time. In English even. There's like four different ones every year (one for each season). They talk about all the latest games and products that Nintendo wants to push and have screenshots and release dates. They're pretty awesome, and back in the pre-internet days of Nintendo Power and GamePro, they'd have been considered to be 100% pure liquid megaton.

They're free, and available to the public. If you can find them. Usually around larger events. Like most promo material, it's collectable in certain circles, so it probably gets on eBay every now and then, but they tend to evaporate quickly, and anything more than a month or two old is half-impossible to find.
