F-Zero X was great. Not as good as GX but still.. Though I guess you could say it's a lot easier to transition a racing game to 3D.

Thanks for the impressions KDR - missed them earlier. This is more helpful than any review I've read.

I've gotten used to the fact that Ian dramatically overemphasises his arguments into useless hyperboles whenever he wants to make a point.

Stogi, I may have replied to your original post but I think the majority of those are great ideas. A few are quite specific so I'm not sure if they're realistic.. but I agree with you - Metroid games have a huge canvas and don't have to be constricted.

Okay guys. I've never played an Animal Crossing game before (yeah, I know..). I decided to pick up City Folk since it seems to be the best of the bunch.

I'm three hours in and I'm wondering.. am I doomed to spend the rest of my AC life performing menial tasks with little reward? Does it get more fun? Am I missing something? Where exactly is one supposed to derive enjoyment from the game?

And these aren't sarcastic questions - I seriously want to know.

If you are talking about the errands Nook sends you on then no, these won't last forever.

If you are talking about stuff like fishing, planting trees and such, well, it all depends on the player. If you aren't having fun with AC I hate to say it but it ain't your game.

You can fish and donate your catch to the museum. It might not seem much, but its definitely satisfying showing off your rare catch to other players. I mean...you can fish sharks!

Then there's decorating your town, which is what I am doing. Once more, its satisfying creating a beautiful town then showing it off. It makes the experience far more personal.

Creating patterns can be very fun and even hilarious at times. Just ask SB about his Mr. Slave pattern. You can also create patterns in order to make patterns and adorn your town, adding even more complexity to your village.

City Folk also has a snapshot option (though poorly implemented). Just go to the Funhouse and you'll see that people are running wild with the screens.

There's even the turnips, which works a lot like the stock market. You can buy a lot of them and hope that Nook sells them at a great cost.

I can go on and on about the experience. AC is a game that is defined by the player. The game gives you the options and the features, but its really up to you how you use your time in the game.

Thanks pap. A few more questions.. What do you mean by decorating your town? Planting trees and flowers? Also, where do you get turnips from? Thanks!

TalkBack / Re: Advice to PS3 Fans from a Nintendo Fanboy Part III
« on: December 29, 2008, 06:07:18 AM »
HELL NO.

PS3 is not GameCube.

GameCube has some of the best games ever made, games with true passion, true INNOVATION. Even the sequels like Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker felt brand new. PS3 has abortions and soulless clones. Gimmick games with ipod product placement. No emotion. No direction.

GameCube sold and profited DESPITE all the negative media, DESPITE being a purple lunchbox for babies, despite third parties hurling big bricks of **** at it. PS3 is selling the same with massive marketing behind it, viral campaigns, support from all the gaming media, being a huge powerful box, having multimedia capabilities, and third parties liking it so much that they are willing to risk TOTAL COLLAPSE to make games for it. It's INCREDIBLE how bad PS3 is doing, in fact I don't think it could possibly be doing worse, with all that "going" for it. GameCube is a modest little man who can't reach the key because it's too high up, while PS3 is a giant fucking fat slob who can't reach the key because he knocked the entire bookshelf over and fell on the key and it got stuck inside his flab rolls and embedded in his skin. They are in the same predicament for completely different reasons.

Nintendo can always support a console no matter what the climate, because they actually make games themselves, Sony has been exposed as having no idea what to do. They even dropped the ball with one of the few games they have left Gran Turismo.

Thank you. My top 10 GameCube games easily beat any PS3 list I've seen.

Would you say this is the F-Zero GX of casual games?

The problem with this idea is that I would still have to get up off the couch and go to the door. I'm still waiting for the firmware update which will allow food to be delivered through the disk slot... Pizza might work best, maybe hotcakes.

That reminds me of the Weekenders :)

The only game you ever need is Mario Galaxy.

EasyCure, you should check out Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire if you haven't already. Good Canadian bands.

I listen to a lot of British bands too - I'd recommend Arctic Monkeys, Blur, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Bloc Party (you mentioned these two), and The Smiths. The Verve has some good songs too. I still haven't completely decided on Joy Division yet. And of course the obvious in Radiohead and Oasis.

According to some youtube videos, Wii Play is a hardcore game. *scared*

The shooting gallery game can become pretty hardcore. I spent a lot of time on it.

He has some good points but completely loses me at the end. He's basically echoing Miyamoto's philosophy of emphasising fun gameplay over presentation. This includes graphics but also everything that detracts from the game. Metal Gear, if you look closely, is pseudo-intellectual pretentious garbage dressed up as a solemn social commentary. The funniest part about the game comes in realising that Kojima actually thinks he's being insightful. I don't think I'll ever support style over substance in a game, unless it really blows me away (like Eternal Darkness).

But this argument falls apart when 1) he insults Nintendo's Wii games and 2) he names Dragon Quest X of all games as the one to bridge the gap between hardcore and casual gamers. Both these points are shattered by the existence of Mario Galaxy which is "steeped in the traditional vocabulary of video games, but with broad appeal" more than any other current gen game.

My advice is to go for some fun pick-up-and-play games like Jungle Beat. I've never been one for tedious, "epic" games (outside of Zelda and Metroid) and I didn't like that the industry was headed in that direction. I find I have to invest more time than I can spare, and what I get in return isn't usually worth it. I guess that's where I differ from most "hardcore" gamers, and why I have so little interest in non-Nintendo consoles. Give me F-Zero GX and I'm in bliss. Give me a Final Fantasy game and I'd puke.

But anyway, maybe that will help. Unfortunately I'm not aware of many good current games that fit the bill. Anyone?

Dirk Diggler didn't seem to have a problem.. and I'm pretty sure yours isn't as big.

Well, that's one less potential NWR user we have to worry about.
