Nintendo Gaming / Revolution - The Exclusive Console
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:31:32 PM »
I don't usually make new threads (especially those that depict my opinion) but I wanted to write this about the Revolution. So here goes..

If everything we have seen so far can be used as an indicator, the Revolution will be an exclusive console. Of course, to anyone who knows about their new controller, this is obvious. Playing with the Revolution will be a drastically different experience than playing with any other competing console. In fact, no other console in history can emulate what the Revolution does. Therefore, it is natural to expect that the control scheme will breed software that utilises it. However, we also have to take into account that the Revolution will not support High Definition and will, in all likelihood, sport weaker hardware. And this is where it gets interesting.

HD is being pushed hard by both Sony and Microsoft. They are both forcing games released onto their consoles to support HD. With this said, most of the multiplatform games for the next cycle of consoles will be designed with High Definition in mind. So how does the Rev factor into all of this? Well, the results could differ greatly. One one hand, multiplatform developers could choose to forgo Revolution development altogether. This is not likely, and most of these developers have already confirmed support for the Rev. A more likely scenario would be that companies wanting to make an  easy port will quickly scale back their games and slip them into the Revolution's library. The end result could be an unpolished game which may even look like a GameCube one graphically. This would not bode well for Nintendo. It was often a complaint that the GameCube got the worst multiplatform ports of them all, since they were quick ports and not developed specifically for the Cube. Big selling games like Madden are prime examples like this. The same situation could happen with the Revolution, except potentially worse. Combine this with the GameCube's infamous 3rd party software tie-in ratio and the Revolution is in a tough situation.

And then there's the whole aspect of multiplatform titles trying to use the control scheme. These titles probably won't be developed specifically to cater to the Revolution's features. The same companies wanting a quick port will either use the shell or try to add in features at the last minute. If the control scheme is used as a gimmick and does not add to the game in any way, it will mean trouble. I suspect this that many games will use the NRC in an unintuitive and unimaginative way for multiplatform ports, and this could even make them worse games than they started off as.

Well, this post has been pretty disheartening until now, but now that the negatives are out of the way onto the flip (positive) side. Nintendo has told us that they are going around to major 3rd parties and helping them to implement the control mechanisms into their franchises. This is a brilliant idea, and Nintendo should do all they can to make sure that 3rd parties use the controller effectively and innovate with it. If all goes according to plan, then multiplatform titles could benefit greatly. If the Rev version of one such game is significantly better, then it would be perfect. It would be something that neither the 360 nor the PS3 version can offer, regardless of how many lines of resolution they offer. Consumers would choose the Rev version, and the controller would pay dividends.

And then there's the exclusives, first and third party. We know that Nintendo's own games will push every feature of the Revolution hard, and will be deciding factors in the success of the Revolution. I also believe that third parties will test the waters at first with some exclusive Rev games early on. One or two of these exclusives need to be runaway successes to sell the console. If the Rev can gain the marketshare lead and the tie-in ratio is respectable, then the whole multiplatform issue won't matter at all. The exclusives will come rolling in, and with them flows potential. Potential for innovation. We could experience some of the best games ever made if everything works out.

So how will the Revolution turn out when it's all over? We can only guess. However, one thing is for sure; Nintendo is betting all the marbles on this one..

General Gaming / S-Video
« on: March 05, 2006, 05:56:42 PM »
So. I've decided that I want to buy S-Video cables for my Cube. It took me the better part of four years, but I feel that this is a necessary path to take. I just have a few questions..

I usually get first party accessories, so in this case I'm inclined towards the Nintendo branded cables. However, they're more expensive (price is not a factor, though), and they're also not available in stores (right?). I wanted to know if there are any third-party offerings (Pelican? MadCatz?). And if so, for those who have used them, are they comparable in quality to the Nintendo ones? And finally would you, by any chance, know if they are readily available in stores? I could go check myself, but if anyone here already knows, that would be great.

Thanks!

General Gaming / PS3 Facing Delays - 2007?
« on: February 19, 2006, 06:17:26 PM »
Well, it's been rumoured for a while now; I didn't think they would make their Spring goal, but here it is..
Quote

SONY'S next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console might not appear in key markets this year, Britain's Financial Times has reported.
...
But Hitoshi Kuriyama of Merrill Lynch in Japan said there are reports that the PS3 could be delayed by between six and 12 months, meaning an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the US.
Looks like Nintendo will achieve their aim of launching close to the PS3. They're saying that it is to finalise the Cell chip and the Blu Ray capabilities.

General Chat / Books, Anyone? (Blasphemy!)
« on: February 11, 2006, 07:18:06 PM »
Some of you, I'm sure, will think I'm a raving lunatic, but I like books more than videogames.. Sure, you could argue that games are more interactive and stimulating because of the audiovisual aspect, but to me, I get engrossed with some books. Can't say the same for games. Maybe when I first played SMB (Lemieux & Siblings, not Primate & Sphere), but still..

So anyway, I'm in a bit of a predicament here. I don't have a suitable book to read.. That's where you come in. This thread is designed for recommendations and discussions of books worth reading.

Let me tell you my situation. For the past few months, I've been (bound and) covered as far as books go. Upon recommendation from my dad, I started reading books by Jeffrey Archer. I read five lengthy ones, but now I'm on a bit of a hiatus. If there's someone who has read his books in this forum, I'll be extremely surprised. But he's got some great ones. Two out of the five that I enjoyed were Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and First Among Equals. The second one is boring to most people, but I'd recommend the first one to anyone; it's short, sweet and entertaining. During this time, I've also read The Penelopiad (Margaret Atwood). I'd tell you more about all of these books, but I don't want to write too much.

Now that I'm done these books, I'm looking for anything else. I'm in the mood for a more lighthearted book, but if one of you recommend something that isn't, I don't mind at all. At this point, I can't really be picky. So if there's any way you can help me, please do.

And admins, please don't shut down this thread. I'm not exactly asking for favourite books, but for recommendations and discussion of books. Thanks.

NWR Forums Discord / ENGLISH LESSON
« on: November 13, 2005, 01:44:47 PM »
OK guys, since I know you slept through 54.3% of the English classes you ever attended, here is a quick not and painless lesson on DRAMATIC IRONY through a simple anecdote...

I was in high school. One day, my friend and I were walking back from playing street hockey. Suddenly, he looked down and saw a dirt-covered object on the road. He picked it up and scratched some of the crusted earth off vigourously, revealing a loon. Therefore, we deduced that it could only be a dollar coin. My friend thought it was his lucky day, because he owed Friend #2 exactly a dollar and he figured that this would be perfect to pay him back with.

So, the next day, we went to school, and the friend tried his luck. Friend #2 obviously refused to accept it, using some choice words. All was not lost, however. I, being the smart one that I was, had the idea of putting it in the vending machine and pressing the change button to get quarters out of it, which could be used to repay Friend #2.

We went to the nearest Coca Cola TM vending machine, and we put the coin in. Upon pressing the change button, we received....

8 QUARTERS!!

For those of you who can't do the math, that's $2. The coin must have been so close to the weight of a $2 coin, it fooled the vending machine...

And that, my friends, that is IRONY...

The301-day NHL lockout has finally come to a close after more than a season of no games.

I know that many of you really don't give a damn, but please....humour me.

And remember, this isn't an "I don't care," thread, this is a "Congratulations" thread.

General Gaming / Burnout Legends for PSP...
« on: May 08, 2005, 02:32:09 PM »
I just heard news that there would be a "best of" Burnout game for the PSP, which includes tracks and cars from the previous Burnout titles. I have looked, but I don't think it's going to be on the DS. Shafted again.... Does anyone know if it is true that the game won't be coming to the DS?

From dsnews.co.uk: CLICKY (1)!

Here's the preview: CLICKY (2)!

I read that it was made "specifically for the PSP" so I'm not optimistic. Of course, this is another one of those ports - not an original game, but it would be nice if a Burnout game was added to the DS library. If it's exclusive, then ouch~

Nintendo Gaming / Best Title Ever
« on: March 17, 2005, 07:56:48 PM »
I just thought of making a thread of the best/most clever/wittiest title that any video game has had. There are many but I'll just mention two of my favorite ones

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

For those of you who don't know (don't worry - I didn't at first either), a requiem is a song that is sung at someone's funeral. So, in this game, literally it means a song sung because sanity is dead. Figuratively, it symbolizes the end of someone's sanity. This really ties in to the game because it actually is about being insane etc  - those who have played it will know. Anyway, it is extremely clever, and I wonder how long it took to think of it lol.

The Legend of Zelda: A  LINK to the Past

I love this title lol. It may be a simple pun but w/e

Nintendo Gaming / Big Rumour
« on: January 24, 2005, 11:31:09 PM »
Hello everyone...just want to say that this is my first post - I should have joined a while ago though.

So, I was just reading the IGNDS mailbag, and I came across an interesting tidbit

http://ds.ign.com/mail

"So it's just a matter of time until someone cracks the DS broadcast code and enables games to broadcast over the internet.

In the meantime, however, there's been rumblings at Nintendo that indicate that the company will finally unwrap its DS online plans very very soon. As it goes, Nintendo left the keys to the WiFi car in the hands of the third-party developers, but the third-party developers didn't want to drive it without Nintendo making the engine. So, as a result, if we've been hearing things correctly, Nintendo will finally and very, very soon, reveal its own "Xbox Live" like service for developers to adopt. And the first game out of Nintendo to use this service will be one of those massively killer Nintendo brands that people have been wanting to play online for years..."

Super Smash Bros. anyone???

If it is, I think I'll cry
