Nintendo Gaming / My thoughts on Wii
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:55:34 AM »
I know this will probaly get buried in the boards (for good reason too!), but I wanted to comment a bit on Wii. To begin I thought Nintendo had a solid presentation, they had alot of enthusiasm and the focus was definately on how the games controlled instead of what they look like. With that said, I'll admit I was a bit let down by the graphics, but I have a feeling that they could improve when they are finally released. If for some reason they don't, it won't bother me. This is because games like Mario Galaxy looks like a unique twist on the Mario series, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. Red Steel also looked unique and above all else, fun, so that is another anticipated game for myself.

Now to shift my focus a bit, I want to explain why exactly I am excited for Wii and not so excited for the other consoles (even though I may end up getting them down the road). My reason is that both PS3 and Xbox 360 are becoming cheap alternatives to a PC (though PS3 is stretching the cheap part). You can  get mind blowing graphics and sound from a PC, in fact many games for X360 and probaly PS3 will also be on PC. That is not really that exciting for me, especially when I own a fairly powerful PC.

Gaming consoles used to be different experiences than PC gaming, but now that line has been wiped away for the most part. Will I get a PS3 or repurchase a Xbox 360 (I did own one)? Possibly, since I do like some of the exclusives, but really it will be the same old experience just with more eye candy. Even Sony's laughable and "revolutionary 6 degrees of motion" PS3 does not impress me much from a control side. They really should be embarassed over such a blatant, yet poorly implemented ripoff of the Wiimote.

With the Nintendo Wii, I will get a gaming experience that cannot yet be replicated by PC or the other consoles. That is something to get excited for! Something like this doesn't happen everyday, but is in fact a rare ocassion. Sure you can have updated graphics and sound, but the immersion level has remained the same (excluding the basic graphical facelift).

I may be wrong, but most gamers want to have more immersive control over their games, not just the japanese gamer. That is the potential Wii has, gaming could be forever changed, and I see no reason to be anything less than excited and hopefully this becomes more realized as people get to play Wii on the showfloor tomorrow and the following days.

P.S. Is it just me or does it seem like Nintendo always has more excitement over what they are presenting over the others?

Nintendo Gaming / A slightly different E3 Wii topic
« on: May 03, 2006, 11:17:01 PM »
I was wondering what game do you guys think will steal the show? The game can be for any of the 3 systems. My personal pick would have to be Too Human, though I feel some of the Wii games will come close.

Nintendo Gaming / iOne of your most anticipated E3s?
« on: April 24, 2006, 01:00:38 AM »
With E3 just around the corner (about 2 weeks!), I was wondering if this is one of your, if not your most anticipated E3 of all time. For me, I definately can say that I have never been so pumped for an E3, except perhaps when N64 was revealed with Mario 64 followed by Nintendo DS's unmasking. Now I will not be there in person, but that has never stopped before from enjoying it because of the internet. Anyway, here is hoping to Nintendo stealing the show and regaining much of what they lost in the marketplace.

Nintendo Gaming / Is it right to compare NDS and PSP?
« on: January 25, 2006, 06:53:39 PM »
I know people are really focused on the NDS vs PSP in sales, but really is it fair to compare the two? The NDS is basically a gaming system, with few other "extras", while the PSP is more of a handheld multimedia system that also plays games, it is more for the technology geeks than it is for gamers (not to say it doesn't have some good games!). It is my opinion that the PSP should be in another category by itself, just look at all the VMD movies on the shelves as compared to games.

Nintendo Gaming / Curious about how price drops work
« on: August 21, 2005, 12:22:07 AM »
As most of us know the NDS's official price will be 129.99, now my question is how retailers avoid getting burned by a price drop if they have NDS's already in stock, not sure what the wholesale price is but if nothing is done it would obviously affect their profit. Does Nintendo refund 20$ on each unit sold by the retailer?

I was wondering how many mega bytes the 1019 is, I've never seen anything regarding the mb size of their cards.

Nintendo Gaming / What makes a great handheld?
« on: June 30, 2005, 12:28:14 AM »
I've been thinking about what makes a handheld and what makes a console system, IMO they are for certain games. Sure you can have some cross over and ports but I've always felt a handheld system should stick with games that are pick up and play for the most part (like Meteos, 2-D platformers, WW Touched etc). I think one reason why PSP has been struggling is because it feels like a PS2 portable and the games are nothing special, feeling like ports of PS2 games, I don't think handheld gaming was built for too many console ports. I bought a PSP but sold it because the experience felt like the same thing I've felt on consoles for years, but on a smaller screen along with poorer controls. I think Nintendo has always been great with their handhelds, every once in awhile they may create a 3-D platformer, RPG (well 3rd parties usually do thosE), or something like that but they keep the majority of games as addicting pick up and play titles such as Kirby, Nintendogs, Bomberman, WarioWare series, and puzzle games. I think this is one reason why Nintendo still is ahead in the handheld department, people are ready for console on the go, but what a different experience that is unique to handhelds. What do you think?

Nintendo Gaming / Now that several months have passed
« on: June 25, 2005, 02:22:38 PM »
I was curious as to whether people are happy with their Nintendo DS? Have your opinions changed in anyway since the start?

For me I am quite happy with my nintendo DS, I bought a PSP but ended up selling it because it felt like a mini PS2 instead of a handheld. At the start I enjoyed Feel The Magic, and SM64 DS though I have to admit I wasn't thrilled with the lack of games. Now that several months have passed I think DS has turned into a quality handheld with a great selection of good games, whether it be Pac Pix, WarioWare Touched, Kirby Canvas Curse (A very unique game), and from what I hear Bomberman along with Yoshi Touch N Go are quality games. Yes Nintendo DS did start out slow, but I think it is starting prove itself with games like those that I've listed.

I've been reading various posts from individuals complaining about Nintendo's statement of Revolution being 2-3 times more powerful than GC. If anyone has followed the history of Nintendo they should know by now that Nintendo has never skimped on power with their consoles, the majority have been top of the line and if not barely below the top.

We need to take into consideration that Nintendo is HONEST about their specs, when they say 2-3 times more powerful they most likely mean that the system will be able to produce games that run and look 2 to 3 times better. Considering games like RE4 and the upcoming Zelda, 2 to 3 times more powerful sounds pretty darn good! Even if the Xbox 360 and PS3 (PS3 especially) games looked like they did in the videos they in no way shape or form running at 30 to 40 times more graphical might than PS2 or Xbox, in fact if anything it is 3 to 4 times if you were to look at the graphical quality (and that is without knowing things like framerate).

Nintendo has never been one to doctor pictures of games like other companies tend to do (I don't think I need to name names here), usually what you see from Nintendo is what the game really looks like. Not only that but Nintendo has said in the past that progressivel hardware is a given, but it is how we play the games is where the focus should be on. This leads me to believe there is the normal hardware upgrade that will compete with Xbox 360 and PS3 with alittle extra "revolution" thrown in for good measure.

So in conclusion before people start panicking look at Nintendo's past when it comes to consoles, hardware power has never been an issue despite those bashing the MP3 movies from a game that is obviously in its early stages. Would you all have been happy if Nintendo showed a FMV or doctored movie of a "graphically impressive" Metroid that wouldn't look anything like the final version? I would hope not!

Nintendo Gaming / Not that bad
« on: December 02, 2004, 02:52:16 PM »
I know alot have been complaining that they find the control pad with Y to run, well I just now collected all 150 stars using that control scheme! Personally I seemed to have an easier time then I did with SM64 for N64 (though that coudl be changes made to the game), but once I got used to the control pad I very seldom had a slip up. So for those having trouble with the touch pad, you may want to try out the control pad, it may be more successful for you even if it seems slippery at first, I can defiantely testify to that. BTW this is easily better than SM64, I mean how could it not? It has tons of extras, in addition to the classic stuff!

Nintendo Gaming / Power of Nintendo DS
« on: December 01, 2004, 06:27:53 PM »
Does anyone know how the NDS compares to N64 is graphics? I realize NDS lacks texture filtering (thus the sometimes grainy looking graphics), but I could sware that the games look more detailed and run smooth than they do on the N64, Mario 64 looks crisper and seems to run smooth. In addition Metroid Prime Hunters looks quite impressive even if it does have the "grainy" look to it, and runs very smooth.
