Nintendo Gaming / RE:FF:CC revolution
« on: May 25, 2005, 11:52:54 PM »
A few things that I believe should be changed for the Rev version of FF:CC to make it better...

1.  Instead of having that water pot with the crystal to carry, have the crystal be a necklace that everyone can wear or just the leader.  IMO though, I'd rather not have this damaging aura around, I'd prefer to freely run around as I please but anywho.

2.  More character customization

3.  More depth to the world.  The towns (lack there of) seemed so lifeless.  You couldn't go into any house, there was no definitive weapons or armor shops (that I can remember) that you could purchase items for your character.  There were no pubs or inns to get info.

4.  Upgrade the story.

My ideal situation would be characters unique to you (fully customizable, even let you edit customes with a paint program if you wish lol)  A better leveling up system, vast amount of armor and weapons for said characters.  Character classes to help differentiate everyone's role in the fighting.  Whenever you entered a town, it would be typical rpg fare, get to talk to npcs and whatnot to get the general info on the area.  Inns and pubs would be hubs for you to meet up with fellow gamers/warriors to find out about current adventures to embark on or just sit back and chat.  Picture it like an action version of Animal crossing lol, that type of communication and life but with some rpg depth (this is Squareenix we're talking about, they can do alot better).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:the ghost of the n64DD
« on: May 25, 2005, 10:41:48 PM »
At once, I thought that was Nintendo's reasoning behind adding a HD in their upcomming system.  Using the flash memory is no different though and I too believe they are going to use it (or some of it) for these purposes.  I remember them talking about Earthbound 64 where the world was constantly living.  A world where you can plant a seed then over time, see the tree grow in the same spot.  It was almost, a fully interactive world.  Anyways, I believe they'll dabble a bit with that flash memory.  The 64DD was more an experament than anything else.  They just wanted to test it out and see what worked and what didn't.

IMO, the Rev is going to be the culmination of 20 yrs of R&D for Nintendo.  They are implementing online in a full scale this time, which they have played around with since the famicon era.  Now this upgradeable flash memory seems to be the result of their time with the 64DD.

ran into this over at the Macaddicts forum.  It is in regards to the liquid metal cooling tech from Saphire.

Quote

Maybe they could engineer some of that heavy-metal cooling tech that Sapphire will be using into the Revolution to help keep the size down. Wishful thinking on my part probably

Quote

Actually, it might not be too far-fetched of a suggestion.  Apparently, Nanocoolers' technology, with its ability to be 65x more thermally conductive than previous liquid cooling technologies, while retaining a very small size, has gotten a lot of attention.

Supposedly, a currently undisclosed "strategic" investor, rumored to possibly be a foreign company, has contributed several million dollars towards development so that this company can use the tech in an upcoming consumer product.  All the CEO can say of the development so far is that it is a really big opportunity.......

There's no hard evidence pointing toward this (Nintendo/Nanocoolers partnership), but the grounds for speculation is reasonable enough.  It would be pretty cool (pun intended).

Besides, there is benchmark or standards in measuring system power so who knows how everyeone's calculations match up to each other.  Nintendo, MS, and Sony could all be measuring their system's power on different aspects of their systems.  Also, Sony has a reputation of exagerating and MS has one for doctoring pictures, which ultimately means neither can be trusted.  Nintendo has always been modest and in reality, when it all came down to it, developers always managed to push out way more than what Nintendo had always claimed was possible.  As for Sony's "specs" I can only see them downgrading from here.  The closer they get to release, depending on the cost of production and chips, some elements of the system might be downgraded or scrapped.  Does anyone remember the psx and all how many promised features Sony scrapped from it upon release?

I remember reading the article where this is quoted and it does mainly have to do with Nintendo's networking plan but I believe that individual quote is in reference to the system as a whole.  "not just a portable, not just a console -- it's exactly what we wanted in that it's the birth of a completely new platform" doesn't seem like a good quote in reference to a network plan.  What I get from that is that Nintendo's Rev will go beyond just being a video game system, an entertainment hub that has only to do with gaming, different types of gaming we have yet to see aside from the usual genres.  It'll bring nintendo back to having an "entertainment system" as aposed to a "video game system"

That was quoted from I believe Squereenix's president.  He was talking about how he like's the direction Nintendo is going.  Thats news is recent and shouldn't be hard to find if you want the direct quote lol.

I too also think the revelutionary aspect is not in the controller (or not just the controller, the controller in junction with the system is more likely)  Reggie (I think it was him, well someone at Nintendo) said that they would not reveal everything on the Rev till Sony finalized their specs.  This leads me to believe that whats revolutionary about the Rev lies within the hardware.  If it was the controller, Sony and MS could simply just make their own and adapt that into their system.  If the key ingredient is in the hardware, Sony and MS can't really do much but wait till the next next gen in order to copy it.

I was over at the G4 forums to further look into this matter.  Everyone there seems to believe in this Han_Solo becuase it seems he has been making predictions for quite some time now (mostly on the xbox 360)  The members make mention of him being correct with Xbox 360 specs that he had posted 4 months ago.  Also, I'm no tech head but from reading his posts, it seems that Han_Solo is very knowledgeable in the feild of technology.  For that though, I'd prefer a Smaug or someone else (a tech savvy individual) to pass by their forums and take a look at his posts.

Anyways, I found a few more quotes from this Han_Solo.

When questioned how would they fit all that into the small frame of the Rev, he gave a simple reply

Quote

why all this can fit is because of the 90nm process

When questioned about cost he had this to say

[QE]because of the 90nm process. ATI and IBM have the coolest running with copper inductors. ATI also got their prototype of an aluminium based solution by Sapphire, thats cooler than water based cooling systems.

So all this will be with it to make it cheap

In regards to graphics next gen and PPU he had this to say

Quote

Interesting isn’t it, about the thought of “would u ever imagine RE4 graphics in 1999”. Remember how I said that, the next generation would make people’s eyes wide like the way Rogue Leader did, in 2002. The same thing is going to happen.
In my technical opinion, remember the starting fight in space in the movie Star Wars Episode 3. That’s the graphics of next generation. That would be like the “next Rogue Leader”.
This is some of my info on the PPU chip.
The PPU was built by the company Ageia, and is named the PhysX chip
PhysX is the world's first Physics Processing Unit (PPU), an entirely new category of processor that promises to revolutionize gaming in the physics area. By offloading software physics processing from the CPU and GPU, the PPU completes the triangle of gameplay, graphics and physics, balancing the load of these processing tasks and enabling pervasive interactive reality in games.
PhysX Processor Architecture has been designed to enable radical acceleration of:
· Rigid body dynamics
· Universal collision detection
· Finite element analysis
· Soft body dynamics
· Fluid dynamics
· Hair simulation
· Clothing simulation

There is an SDK program that runs with PhysX and is as follows:
NovodeX Physics SDK
This program called the NovodeX Physics SDK, is a stable, high-performance solution for game developers to enable physics-based gameplay and effects in PC and console titles. This has been used in Half Life 2 extensively and Far Cry. But CPU power handling this and other things isn’t good compared with a CPU doing what it was mean to do, like data flow, and a PPU with this program handling just physics (and can also add physics to the sounds produced), makes the games kick ass. A powerful API for the PhysX PPU, NovodeX enables game developers to inject both software-only and hardware-accelerated features into their games. The NovodeX Physics SDK is also the first and only asynchronous (multithreaded) physics API capable of unleashing the power of multiprocessor gaming systems, just like Xbox 360, PS3 and the Revolution.

Thats all I've got so far from this Han_Solo character.  Someone else went and posted rumored Rev specs they found over at the Xplay forums.  They are as follow

Quote

Processor: A Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU, 2 symmetrical cores both running at 2.8 GHZ, all dedicated to gaming, 1MB Cache
Hard Drive: 15 Gigabytes, no, it will not be in the console, it will be in another piece of the Revolution (I am not allowed to give specifics, as listed above)
CPU Performance: 19 billion dot operations per second
GPU: ATI Graphics Chip running at 550 MHz, 7.5 MBs of embedded DRAM, 35 unified pixel pipelines, unified shader architechture similar architechture to the R520
Polygon Performance: 512 million triangles per second
Pixel Fill Rate: 15 gigasamples
RAM: 512 MB RAM, 600 MHz of DDR RAM
System Floating Point Performance: 0.75 Teraflops

I found these on the Xplay forum. This person claims to be working closely on the Revolution hardware. He also says the controller is not the "Revolutionary" aspect. I personally remain neautral.

Posted this over at the REV vs PS3 vs XBOX 360 thread but since this thread seems to be focusing on the graphics side of things, I thought it would be also relevent here.   I got this from the Nsider forums which was taken from the gamespot forums lol.

IBM tells all the design requirements for each of the 3 nex gen consoles

Quote: "All of these [companies] are looking for a way to differentiate themselves from each other," said IBM's Su. "What we offered them is sort of a bag of tricks in terms of processor technology ... that they could pull from to differentiate their products."

Microsoft is emphasizing Internet connectivity with its new high-definition Xbox 360, as well as other entertainment features such as the ability to connect to home computers to play music and show movies.

Sony's new PlayStation is expected to introduce a new high-definition DVD technology, called Blu-ray, along with all sorts of ways to connect with other Sony electronics such as MP3 music players and digital cameras.

Nintendo, meanwhile, is sticking fast to the gaming business. It was looking mainly for ways to better display graphics, speed up the processing power of its GameCube successor, and make it more user-friendly, with wireless controller connections and other features.

The writer doesn't include Konami but it was confirmed at the E3.

I think its safe to say that the Rev's graphics will be up to snuff.  Even if it is underpowered, it won't be visible onscreen.  According to these quotes, IBM states that Sony and MS seem to have focused their system's guts towards their multipurpose needs where as Nintendo is focusing on whats important for the games, visually, ease of developement, and hardware efficiency.  This line says its all "
Nintendo, meanwhile, is sticking fast to the gaming business. It was looking mainly for ways to better display graphics, speed up the processing power of its GameCube successor, and make it more user-friendly, with wireless controller connections and other features."

Its also good to see alot of publishers already have kits since alot of people were doubting that.

Could Nintendo in some way inplement this into Rev?  It seems like it works with a projecter and a motion senser.  If Nintendo can instead play the image on a regular tv and use a gyroscope as the motion senser, couldn't they use this technique for games?  (sorry for my spelling, I'm too lazy to check it lol)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Thursday-aton!

I'm aware that it could be an interview as its title sounds as such but I find it strange that they would announce a time frame for it as if it were going to be live.  Usually interviews take place, then they have to be edited then put online.  I guess it could also be the time they plan on posting the interview for the public.

Just to add more fuel to the fire though, let me try and speculate.  My theory is really far out there and I highly doubt this is what it could be that gamespot will be showing.  I remember Nintendo making mention of how the Rev will sort of make a connection with the user.  The experience will be unique to each gamer.  I know it isn't exactly how Nintendo sayed it but I believe that to be what I got from thier theory on the Rev.  If the Rev is supposed to create a unique experience with each user, could this "A man named Reggie" be Reggie demonstrating this exact aspect of it.  He could show how he's made the experience unique to himself and that'll give us an idea on how revolutionary the Rev actually is.  I know its just me trying to start more debates but I guess its worth mentioning.

Something that does seem strange to me is the title "A Man Named Reggie"  The title sounds something similar to a bio.  Something like that would've been more at home last E3 when Reggie made his first impression.  We already know about Reggie, what more could there be behind "a man named reggie" that we need to know.  Again, Ima throw something out there for everyone to chew on.  Look at all the capital letters on the title   A M N R.  I guess the N and R could be Nintendo Revolution, what of the other 2?  A Massive Nintendo Revolution? lol  I can already see how many different variations I'll see on these letters lol.

EDIT:  This was taken from the Penny Arcade Forums

At the fake Nintendo ON video, when the timer hits 3:14, you see this:
Nintendo Revolution Day - 512.000.000

Now, bear with me:
512.000.000 : 1000 = 512.000 (Millisec. -> Sec.)
512.000 : 60 = 8533.3 (Sec. -> Min.)
8533.3 : 60 = 142.2 (Min. -> Hours.)
142.2 : 24 = 5.9 (Hours -> Days)

So there we have 6 days and May 13 (the day this video was leaked) + 6 days = May 19

Some more info for everyone taken from other forums

http://webpages.charter.net/danrarbc64/liz.wmv
One of the videos that were shown at nintendo.com
Quote from it "And then on Thursday we have the Agency coming in to give the presentation"

Gamespot tomorrow has something scheduled at 12 pacific time called "A Man Named Reggie"

A new post from Aries (supposedly) at the gamespot forums
"I hear everyone is talking about www.nintendoon.com. All that I can say for now is that there is truth to it. I can't say much more or somethings might be ruined. I will be heading to e3 in half an hour and remember tomorrow is going to be a crazy day I assure you. Tomorrow will prove that I am real and then I can let you guys know who I am. "

My resonce to Reggie making a strong statement for us to think with the ride side of our brain during the conference.

I find Reggie's mention of thinking with the right brain interesting though. I just recently been reading a book called "drawing on the right side of the brain" and it gets into some detail on the differences between the left and right side of our brains. One key quote from the book that I'll like to share is as follows.....

"The right hemisphere is not good at sequencing- doing the first thing first, taking the next step, then the next. It may start anywhere, or take everything at once. Furthermore, the right hemisphere hasn't a good sense of time and doesn't seem to comprehend what is meant by the term "wasting time," as does the good, sensible left hemisphere. The right brains is not good at categorizing and naming, It seems to regard the thing as-it-is, at the present moment of the present; seeing things for what they simpley are, in all of their awesomene, fascinating complexity. "

This makes sence in the way that if we think with our left side of the brain then we won't understand Nintendo's approach. Our left side would think in the way we have always seen E3. The pre E3 show where everything is layed out and then the 3 E3 days to play games. In using our right side, as Reggie says, we should'nt see E3 in such an order, anything can happen at any time. If they want to have a showing on the last day then they can. I'm sure you can derive more from that quote in relation to all this besides the aspect of time but thats the only point I wanted to put across.

My take on this whole conspiracy...

I've been putting further thought into this and a late showing does make sence. If you think about it, it has its benefits and there is no law to E3 that says you can't have any conf on the last day. I know there have been rumors at past E3 of late info and whatnot but this time we have more to go by. Look at Nintendo's conference, all in all, it was exactly what we didn't want to see and what Nintendo said they wouldn't do. Perrin went and said the Rev was 2-3 times more powerfull as the Gcube, easilly a bad move in her part. Remeber though, she is in charge of PR, they always know what they are doing, everything they say is planned out. Could her saying this have been to set the stage for a lackluster pre E3 conf? They showcased games we already knew about and unloaded on us with not 1, not 2, but 4 mario spinoffs. They also went about and showed as little as possible of Rev (which they already allowed USA today to show us way before the show) and then pulled out Zelda at the last minute similar to last year. This could all have been done to dull our sences, to have the media, in a way, forget and write off Nintendo. It could clearly be seen as a setup to completely do a 360 and WOW us in the end. This could easilly be a set up. If Nintendo were to have another conf on the last day (thurs) it'll set the industry on fire. The last days are usually where all reps from publishing magazines go around and catch up on games they missed, nothing big ever happens on this day. Nintendo coming out of left with a conf would send everything into a frenzy. Editors would be running wild trying to get every detail of the story , pictures and interviews to make the cut for this month's issue. By coming out the last day, Nintendo, will also be the freshest thing on everyone's mind. Everyone will leave LA thinking of Nintendo since the shock factor will still be in. This move would completely steal MS and Sony's thunder.

All in all, there is something up, there's no doubt about that. Nintendo.com making reference to the Rev being behind closed doors somewhere in E3. Someone also made mention of seeing a place called Club Revolution somewhere on the E3 floor (no pics yet to confirm though). Gamespot holding this Reggie thing tomorrow at noon (eastern time). What I'm saying is that everything is in place for Nintendo to pull the rug from under all of us. Weather or not they do it though, is another question. I for one will stay level headed and not expect anything tomorrow but if there is something, I'd be more than happy to say the least.

Yep, strong support and "we'll have to challenge ourselves with content in responce to what Nintendo offers" sounds good to me.  You have to think about why would Squere-enix come out of the blue with this statement regarding the Rev so close to E3.  What exactly do they have to gain in making these statements?  Seems to me like something is up and this is just prepping the media for something bigger.

119
Yeah, I was having a hard time trying to piece together what I remember of the Warppipe stories and this Marionette.  I seen the videos for the demasked project, the teaser videos, and I never remembered hearing anything about marionette during those discussions.  Those quotes from Myo I don't remember though.  Thats a good find.

As for Aries, he seems to stay mum on the subject of the medium and the power for the wireless controllers.  I can't see how there could be a connection there or how either could make the system revolionary but I can't wait till E3 to see whats really going on.

As for NobleFeather, I wish he'd come on to see what he has to say about this.  Its strange that we haven't seen him on in a long while (well I havent seen him on)

120
I never said it was a mario game.  All I mentioned was that it was debated online as being as such.  As far as I remember, it was a name Nintendo filed for a patent.  Same as the old Star road or starcube names.  Don't know what ever happened to them or if they even mean anything.  I tried googling the word marionette but couldn't find much.

121
I could've sworn marionette was just a name Nintendo filed for.  No one knows what the name stands for.  Some assumed it to be part of those Mario talent series games that were being showcased where you can put your own face in the game and create movement and whatnot, sort of like a glorified Mario paint.  Others assumed that the name was in relation to something online enabled.  Either Nintendo's online service or an online mario game.

122
Well, he never revealed what the Rev feature is so that could be whats left to help us realize how this is a revolution as apposed to an evolution.  Also, he did say that the system wasn't exactly revolutionary and that Nintendo was banking too much on that word.  Weather the system is a revolution or not will probably be a matter of opinian and debate.

Its a little ironic that whenever we discuss anything about the revolution we end up, as you said, back to square one.  What we are doing is in a way a revolution, we start and end in the same spot lol.

Back on topic though, the way I see it, I think most of what this Aries is saying is the truth.  Everything he's said is a summary of what we've been hearing for months.  There has to be some truth behind all these smoke and mirrors.  I'd be suprised if all the Rev info at E3 is completely diff than what we've been assuming.  The only thing I'm expecting to get suprised about is the feature that supposedly makes the Rev revolutionary.

124
No, I beg to difer, what he said was "rumors are just blatant lies that get repeated"  What he said was a quasi fact was in regards to gyros being in the controller.  We were both wrong in just stating things in such a one sided way.  I'd agree, not all rumors come from truth but not all are just blatant lies.  Anyways, back to the rumor mongering lol (if thats spelled right)

A little off topic but something just hit me with the talk of Square and Camelot making original rpgs is that I would love both Camelot and Square to try and establish new rpg franchises on Nitnendo's systems. Given that Nintendo's systems rarely get rpgs, let alone a progressive series (FF 7,8,9 or Suikoden 1,2,3,4) to sustain a fanbase, their systems would be the best to start off something new and fresh. A new franchise on playstation could get overshadowed with the anticipation for the followup of DQ or FF or any of thier countless established series.
