That's exactly what seems to elude him: Nintendo didn't lose this gen because of the absence of any particular game. They lost because of a chain reaction of GC support being omitted time and time again. The more companies see GC support vanishing, the fewer games they'll develop for the console. No one wants to go down with the ship.

Even Nintendo did this with the GC.

Banco's support could do a lot of good things for Nintendo, not even their exclusivity, just support, period. The attitude of "Meh, we'll be fine without them." is the same pigheaded BS Nintendo pushed with the cube and look where it got them.

Nintendo Gaming / The DS has officially arrived...

...Because Snood has recognized it!

It sells for $9.99 retail, multi card wireless play (which makes no sense), but I just thought it was proof that the puzzle market is officially on the DS.

Found my copy at Bestbuy, but I've never seen it anywhere else...

I'm personally hoping they invent the FPH (first-person hacker) in which you use the Rev controller as the handle of your sword and hack and slash your way through enemies, deflecting blows with your weapon and doing a whole host of fun things to boot.

It's such an obvious concept (even alluded to in the first ever Rev controller "commercial" when the kid sat down waving the controller as it made "sword" noises) that I'm sure someone is making it...

I loved Geist, and I so rarely used guns to kill anyone that the aiming never gave me issues (I didn't see the problem with it, anyway).

What other game lets you feed poison soup to a room full of guards, peep in women's shower and possess a parrot and then tell its owner to "Die!"?

Also Midway has some big games like Blitz and Crusin USA, and Area 51 ammong others that wont kill rev if not there but will help if present. As for Midway not suporting rev, they have stated publcily ont hier website that they wouldnt maek games for Nintendo anymore, they said that GBA and DS and all other systems wouldnt get any support because of GBA and GC sales (in regards to Midways software not hardware sales.)

Every game helps, even if it's just for the sake of a final tally of all games available on the system. Even BMX XXX was one more game that counted towards the GC's grand total, trash or not.

It's saying, "Ah, we don't need ______." which is the wrong mindset. Nintendo needs everything they can get their hands on. Even if it doesn't sell consoles, even if the game sucks, it's one more game which is on their console which cannot be used as a reason to not buy a Rev. It starts with small omissions and goes further, until half of all games which are multi-console don't include the cube.

Midway being back on board is indeed good news because it cements the fact that they haven't given up on Nintendo, just the GC (which Nintendo itself has basically given up on).

If 3rd parties are also curious as to how Nintendo will do, so much so that they're afraid to rule it out too early, then this is a good sign. It means that they haven't ruled Nintendo's next console out, which is a relief because they've clearly ruled out the cube.

First of all, considering that the N64 is the console on which Nintendo lost the majority of its ground to Sony, I'd hardly consider using it as an example.

Second, you're missing the big picture here...

We've already established that this will never happen so it's all theory anyway, but the point is not Banco exclusivity is beneficial to any system, more so than you give it credit. You seem to be hailing Square as some godly force of game sales. While I won't deny that they have a strong presence, it was GTA which made the PS2 the #1 seller that it is today, if anything.

But none of that matters now because we're in a generation shift, which is exactly the POINT here. To reiterate what was stated much earlier, Sony won because the developers were convinced that they were going to be the winner this generation. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you get enough developers to come to you, the rest will follow for fear of being left out, you get the most games and you win.

Banco exclusivity may or may not help the Rev during its lifespan, but it would be just about the best thing in the WORLD for it to be announced right now before developers have chosen "sides". The sight of two huge development companies backing Nintendo would turn a lot of heads. Be it money hats or pressure from stock holdings, being able to say, without a doubt, that a certain franchise will only be available on your console directly equates power in the market, the type of power which shows 3rd parties your willingness to effectively FORCE people to buy your console to play a certain game. It's that same force which will sell more games by other 3rd parties, making your console look like a more attractive choice for game development (exclusive or otherwise).

Now, I don't know what's going to happen when that curtain goes up at the Kodak theater, but I do know THIS: if Nintendo doesn't secure 3rd party backing (and I mean SECURE, not have it for 6 months before it goes to the most-popular console), they're out of the home console market. With the cube, they've already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of releasing enough 1st party games to keep the market satisfied. Unless they can convince 3rd parties to come over to the Rev, it's over.

Otherwise, all that's left is to let Sony and MS gradually throw around enough money hats to round up all of the 3rd party exclusives. Nintendo will release a 1st party game once every 3 months and a dozen lousy Mario spinoff titles between those three months while their fanbase slowly erodes until they have 5% of the market like Apple computer.

I don't know if Banco could make or break, but I DO know that it could easily be the catalyst in a chain reaction which would force 3rd party developers to at least CONSIDER developing their games for the Rev, if not exclusively, at least AT ALL which is something Nintendo has suffered from this generation and suffered HORRIBLY. Remember how many game ads would list "PS2, Xbox" and no GC? I can't count the number of times I looked at a game ad in a magazine or on TV, saying, "Hmm, looks alright." only to notice the absence of the GC logo from the list of consoles and frown in disappointment.

And Nintendo needs 3rd party support more than they ever did.

1. They're trying something very new and different which could potentially fail.

2. They have a reputation for being 3rd. No one wants to develop for the console of the 2nd loser.

Like I said, make or break is irrelevant. Either way, it would be a STRONG step in the right direction.

Component is different from HD, and I do think I remember hearing that the Rev will take advantage of it.

I too have the cables, but I've yet to buy a TV which would use it and I don't plan to until mine dies or becomes unwatchable.

Also, swapping TVs around is a royal PITA.

Not to turn this into a political debate, but yes, he did. To make a long story short, he signed bills which not only made it easy but better for American companies to seek labor overseas. If that doesn't classify as exporting US jobs, I don't know what does.

From what I understand, many manufacturers are still making "normal" TVs because they're still selling just fine. Why stop manufacturing when a product hasn't seen a slump in demand yet?

This is a good sign, not because they're working on the Rev, but because this is exactly the kind of game which Midway and many other developers would always NOT develop for the GC.

Heh, I was actually replying to couchmonkey but you snuck your post in there.

Shonin Jump includes Naruto and One Piece, both of which are HUGE in Japan, and in addition to that, Bandai controls Gundam and Digimon, another two huge hitters. Add in the entire Tales series, Xenosaga (which I hear is concluded), and Namco's other franchises and I think it's safe to say that controlling Banco would probably rival Square, especially in Japan where Shonin Jump and Gundam are huge.

But we've already established that Nintendo is only the 7th-8th largest shareholder, which isn't enough to get anything "done", in terms of exclusive titles.

Anyone here HAVE an HD TV? (and I mean the tuner as well because that's half the cost)

To speak from personal anecdote, I'm a guy who enjoys throwing his money around from time to time. I've been a hardcore gamer since age 5 and I have a tidy sum in the bank because I've been working since I was 12. I have a PS2, Xbox, GC, two GBAs, a DS, a colbalt flux dancepad, 4 DK bongos and well over 100 games for this generation.

All that considered, I haven't even bought a widescreen TV because I look at those pricetags and I just won't do it. I like to spend on occasion, but the price of those things equates sodomy, especially if you want to buy one from a trustworthy brand. I just don't see the need to replace my TV when it works just fine. The new TV will provide some better graphics and widescreen, but that's not enough to justify the cost.

Also, in today's economy, I don't see people splurging on HD. Our "president" is exporting american jobs to other countries as fast as humanly possible. Gas prices are ridiculous and taxes aren't exactly dropping. This is not the economic climate in which people will be spending $1000+ on a 27'' HDTV when you can get a 36'' regular TV for right around $500, and from a better brand name, too.

Will that change in 5 years? Maybe, but the price hasn't seen THAT much drop in the past few years so I don't see why it would take a sudden dive now.

I agree with a lot of what Ian is saying about shortsightedness, but I don't think HD is one of those cases.

HD is still too expensive to say that it will be in the home of the average gamer within 5 years (and I don't think the price is coming down enough, either, especially when you consider that "HD ready" means it still needs an HD tuner which costs extra).

Broadband was a different story because everyone is naturally going to switch to broadband anyway because it offers the customer many features which dialup cannot, like streaming video and downloads at a mere fraction of the time. Plus, broadband is genuinely affordable and didn't cost that much more per month than dialup.

I don't see HD following this same trend because the hardware cost of generating the products haven't seemed to come down much and HD doesn't offer any "new" features to a game except some moderately better graphics. Also, a TV is not something you go out and replace on a whim. I'm going to replace my 32'' sony when and ONLY when it dies and even then, I'm not convinced I'll be replacing it with HD.

The increased cost for an HDTV just doesn't justify the return you get from having it (improved picture is all you get). Combine that with the fact that the economy is getting worse in the US all the time and I don't think you'll see HD saturation until we're nearing the end of the Rev's lifespan anyway.

However, Nintendo's shortsightedness has gotten them into heaps of trouble in the past, including Yamauchi's famous ousting of Square, the decision to not create any 1st party online titles and the near-total lack of 3rd party support this gen (for GC, anyway).

If Nintendo could just do with the home market what they've done with the handheld market, I think we'd see a great deal more 3rd party support as well as more gamers willing to give them a chance. God willing, they won't be shortsighted about the Rev and the support it will need from 3rd parties.

Frankly, I'd love to see a 1st party mature franchise produced by Nintendo.

Something which can be violent, yes, but at the same time, smart. It should be a game which classifies as "mature" not because of the violence factor but because the storyline requires an adult brain to fully appreciate. I loved MGS and it's my firm belief that we need more games like it.

A great deal of mature titles are relegated to being pointless gorefests. If more games had movie-quality storylines (and I mean GOOD movies), then gaming could probably be seen as something which revolves around interactive story and plot, giving people like Jack Thompson far less ammunition when it comes to berating games and gamers.

You make valid points, but the proof is in the pudding, and in this case, the best pudding I've had in ages is the DS.

I'd be vastly more skeptical if the DS wasn't out there kicking ass and taking names, but seeing it and how it has done, despite the fact that it too was a gamble, I do think Nintendo may be onto something with their push for innovation.

Nintendo could become the Apple Computer of the gaming industry: they come out with the newest and best not because they want to, but because they HAVE to. That's one of many reasons I own a mac and always will, because I know for a goddamn FACT that the little guy will produce the best product because, if he doesn't, he'll be dead come next year.

MS and Sony can slack off all they want and not have a care in the world, knowing they have billions of dollars backing them, but Nintendo HAS to make the quota and I strongly believe that they're finally aware of this fact: the DS tells me that they know what they have to become in order to survive in this market.

When the curtain goes up at the Kodak, I think everyone who witnesses the show is going to come away with technology lust like no other. I say this because Nintendo shouldn't have any illusions about what needs to happen in order to stay in the home console market.

I agree on one thing: if they blow this, they can say good-bye to the home market, but I have a feeling this will not be their fate.

What can I say? I hope you're 100% on the money, P.

Nintendo doesn't have another "Continue" in its pocket this time, but they're definitely coming to the fight with the right stuff. The DS was the necessary step to crush the PSP: something new and innovative which even a console with more power and a bigger screen couldn't match.

Simply put, Nintendo HAD to innovate. Whether the Rev succeeds or fails, they did the right thing by giving their customers something the other companies cannot offer and by pushing game concepts in a new direction.

I haven't played any games in about a week now. I quit World of Warcraft because it's a crappy timesink and even Animal Crossing WW doesn't do it for me. I'm a hardcore gamer who burned out: I don't find games fun anymore, largely because every game out there is just an updated iteration of an existing concept. There's nothing NEW in the true sense of the word, just a variation on something we've already played.

The Rev is the last hope to pull me back into gaming (after Zelda, that is). Otherwise, god forbid, I'll have to find something else to do with my time...

The image is being propagated by their competitors because they know that insecurity is a powerful marketing tool.

LOST

I quiver at the thought of impaling your enemies on your sword, lifting them over your head, and then flinging them through the air like projectiles into a cluster of other enemies, or fire, or onto spikes, or off a cliff, or into a pen of hungry wild dogs, or...holy sh*t, I'm demented...
