NWR Forums Discord / Tingle's crown has been STOLEN! (minor TP spoilers)
« on: January 04, 2007, 06:04:35 PM »
Gäygamer.net ran a top 20 list of homosexual videogame characters. Topping the list was Tingle and the argument for his ranking was definitely a sound one (WARNING: this link starts music playing).

However, and I'm stunned no one has mentioned this yet, Tingle has a challenger and that challenger has likewise stepped forth from the LoZ franchise.

You see, gäy videogame characters aren't anything out of the ordinary. In fact, games like Fable, Fallouts 1 and 2 and the Sims all allow for homosexual marriages without drawing much attention. It wasn't the fact that Tingle was perceived as gäy which earned him the top spot. It was the fact that he was insanely over the top in his fruitiness which beat out all competitors, male and female alike.

But as I said, a challenger approaches! Ladies and gentlemen, meet Falbi!

As if Falbi's attire and appearance weren't suggestive enough, his sassy walk and innuendo-laced dialogue should be.

First of all, the use of the word "fantastication" pretty much buries the needle when it comes to suggestion (though, his somewhat depressed looking partner down in the lake also uses the word). He's also notably disappointed that there's only one "big guy" here to partake in the festivities.

But if that's not enough, one of his following lines absolutely seals the deal.

I apologize if anyone finds this post mean spirited. I'm not intending to make fun of homosexuals in any way, but you can't deny that this innuendo is anything but subtle. In fact, I dare say it's bashing us right over the head.

Though Tingle may have been one fruity little bastard, I don't think he ever had any dialogue that was anywhere NEAR this suggestive, nor was his occupation selling "cucco" rides to strapping young men.

The torch, my friends, has been passed.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Hunting Nightmares...Literally!
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:28:51 PM »
So yeah, aside from obsessing about SSBM back in the day and accidentally giving myself dreams about THAT, next on my list is Wii hunting.

I've been having a reoccurring dream where I'm in a gigantic mall-like complex with literally dozens of potential stores that COULD be selling Wiis. I'm always running around frantically, hoping that, by some miracle, this store's shipment will have JUST arrived and I'll be there in time to snatch one up. Also, in the dreams, I'll frequently find a Wii in its box, then flip it over and it's been destroyed with all of the electronics hanging out everywhere, like it was returned that way.

It's like I've managed to elevate the Wii to a mythical level in my dreams due to its elusiveness, despite the fact that I've bought three already, because I still need at least two more for friends who want them.

I know it seems like the most trivial sh*t haunts me, but these are two friends I failed to deliver for at xmas and I've never stopped feeling bad about it.

Who else here is still Wii hunting, lurker or regular? Also, anyone else in the "Please get me one if you can find it!" situation when it comes to friends/family?

Nintendo Gaming / I hope "Secret Rings" doesn't suck...
« on: January 04, 2007, 08:08:02 AM »
I've said this before and I'll say it again, after Sonic's latest horrible outing, "Secret Rings" is my absolute last hope for Sonic.

It's sad that, in it's unabated attempt at self-destruction, Sega has taken Sonic down with it. From the questionable Sonic Adventures (which I actually enjoyed) all the way to the latest mess, the only glimmer of hope we've seen in between was Sonic Rush on the DS, developed by a company other than Sonic Team.

I find myself with little faith left in Sonic, or more accurately, Sonic Team, which seems absolutely incapable of grinding out anything but garbage anymore.

Is there any reason to hope that SR will be anything but another crapfest or should I just accept Sonic's death and move on?

Nintendo Gaming / The Unending Viral Chain?
« on: December 29, 2006, 08:51:21 AM »
A thought just occurred to me...

We all know the Wii has viral marketing power, yes, but how far does that power extend?

Here's a simple question to ask yourself which can likely determine the answer: how many people have you shown the Wii to who then opted to go out and get one of their own?

Better question: how many people have you shown it to who did NOT show some interest?

In my personal experience, when I show it to non-gamers, they're immediately hooked, and when I say "$250 and it comes with Wii Sports" they're DEFINITELY ready to go.

In theory, the Wii's viral chain never has to end. Even when it's shown to the most lonely, friendless people, even they have relatives who can and very likely will get to try it (especially since I know the Wii has been a huge hit with my relatives and the relatives of others). The Wii isn't a console which your average otaku will just squirrel away in his room. It's more the type to be out in the living room, adjacent to the TV where it can and will be played by all manners of people who may visit the house.

I think it's almost safe to say, with the Wii's universal appeal with Wii Sports, that a Wii has a higher chance of selling additional Wiis than NOT selling additional Wiis, and that in itself is absolutely incredible.

I noted that there was a very brief period after launch in which Wiis were easier to get, then they became nigh-impossible to get and still are today. I think it was the viral effect taking hold. That said, it's no wonder Nintendo can't make these fast enough.

Am I alone in this thinking? I just can't help but feel that the Wii could easily be sold out for most of next year, especially as the virus continues to spread...

Nintendo Gaming / What's the FRIGGIN' hold up!?
« on: December 27, 2006, 07:50:05 AM »
So...Xmas has come and gone and many anxious Nintendo fans and newfound Wii enthusiasts have gone Wiiless.

With significantly weaker hardware, many speculated that the Wii would be vastly more plentiful due to cheap and easy manufacturing.

I know the DSL demand caught Nintendo off guard, but I can't believe they're letting it happen yet AGAIN.

I'm still in the market for at least 2 more Wiis, and looking at the continuing post-Xmas prices on ebay, I don't think I'll be able to fill those orders before February at this rate.

So what's the hold up? Has anyone seen any news, rumors, info, etc. which would explain why there's such an insane Wii drought?

Nintendo Gaming / Xmas Wii Reactions...
« on: December 24, 2006, 07:08:59 AM »
So, I accidentally sold two more Wiis yesterday.

Company xmas party was at my home (family business and all) and two of my associates who work from their locations were there for it.

I overheard both of them saying, after playing the Wii, the EXACT same things I've been saying about it: "I haven't been interested in any of the consoles since the N64, but this is different.", "This feels like it could really get me up off the couch and get me moving.", etc.

We should be JUST about ready for round 2 of Wii reactions from family, friends, etc.

So let's hear 'em...

Nintendo Gaming / Wiimote Battery Solutions
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:56:15 AM »
I just picked up an energizer NiMH charger at Circuit City which came with 4 NiMH 2500 mAh AA batteries and I picked up another pack of 4, all for $42.

These advertise that they are specifically-geared for high-drain devices like digital cameras (and Wiimotes are certainly high-drain devices).

If this works out, within 4 months it will have paid for itself in battery costs, and that doesn't take into account the 4 player games which could show up and increase battery expenditure tenfold.

There's also this little gem, but it's not out in the states as of yet and they're backordered.

What's everyone else doing for batteries?

EDIT: Wrong link.

Nintendo Gaming / Prediction: iTunes Wii Channel
« on: December 20, 2006, 06:29:25 AM »
This is my prediction:

Around the time Nintendo releases the Wii firmware update which officially activates the two USB 2.0 ports on the back of the Wii, a press release will come out regarding the partnering of Nintendo and Apple to bring iTunes and iPod support to the Wii.

The circumstantial evidence:

1. All new iPods utilize USB 2.0. Iwata was once quoted as stating that most USB storage devices would indeed work with the Wii. Logically speaking, the ability to use iPods as storage devices for Wiis would work extremely well.

2. Nintendo has been flattering Apple recently, not only with the designs of their products but also with Reggie's comments about the iPod, Apple's ingenuity and how Nintendo hopes to accomplish the same feat with the Wii.

3. The Wii supports Quick Time media formats, something which requires the licensing of Apple's proprietary codecs to do. By contrast, neither the 360 or PS3 support Quick Time movies. This means that Nintendo and Apple have already sat down at the bargaining table at least once. Is there a second shoe waiting to drop?

4. Both the Virtual Console and the iTunes Music Store use the Akamai file distribution software to download media. This means that the infrastructure necessary to download iTunes media is already present on the Wii with BOTH Akamai support AND QT media formats for mp3s and movies.

5. It's a win-win, especially with MS and Sony each trying to push their mp3 players and services on their respective consoles. This way, Apple gains a spot at the console table and isn't left out of that market and Nintendo offers the largest mp3/movie download network on their console so they don't miss out on a selling feature their competitors offer.

I think it'll happen simply because it makes more sense to have it happen than not: Apple sells more movies/music and Nintendo gains even more non-gamer appeal and will no doubt receive money for music/movie sales as well.

Now we just need to wait a few months to see what happens...

Nintendo Gaming / Reggie Regginates Rockstar?
« on: December 19, 2006, 04:55:05 AM »
Looks like it...

Sorry if this is somewhat old news (don't recall seeing it), but it sounds like Reggie spoke to Rockstar personally in an effort to get GTA brought to the Wii.

If this is true, this will at long last stamp out the residual "Nintendo is teh kiddé, LOLOL!!!!" sentiment which Sony and MS always tried to label them with.

Nintendo Gaming / PoP: Wii = Wiimake

What I don't understand is how Ubi expects to become the #1 3rd party anything by not showing much effort in cases like this.

Nintendo Gaming / Excite Truck haters: STFU!
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:43:24 AM »
Seriously, rent it, play the tutorial and get a few good hours under your belt before you rag on this game. It gets dramatically better once you understand all of the different methods you can use to accrue stars, how to perfect turbo jumps and how to ensure that you win in collisions.

There's something you can get from enough play time with this game at home that you just can't get at a demo kiosk...

The most underrated launch game of the Wii was Excite Truck, hands down.

Nintendo Gaming / Bad reviews + high sales = 3rd party LOVE
« on: December 01, 2006, 06:58:11 AM »
I have to hand it to Gamespot for predicting this ahead of time.

But it goes a step further than a simple rub-it-in mentality. Oh boy, does it ever.

You see, if launch titles like Red Steel, Rayman and SMB were getting rave reviews, it would make 3rd parties more leery on making games for the Wii because, let's face it, most games aren't AAA material, not even close. Many 3rd party games are lucky to come up with an 8 in reviews.

However, with all 3rd party games getting so-so reviews and yet STILL selling as well as they are, it's a super kick in the teeth to all of the developers who chose not to develop for the Wii early on. Red Steel, for example, has generated more flame than your average parade in San Francisco, and yet it's being reported as the #2 selling title behind Zelda, and with the tie-in ratio being 1:3.5 for the Wii, it and other 3rd party titles are indeed reaping the benefits...and doing so with games which many consider unpolished and often buggy.

In other words, your average 3rd party who skipped out on the Wii launch is likely pounding their head against a desk somewhere, saying, "Dammit, that should be OUR sh*tty game!!!!"

What does this mean? It means that the Wii does indeed offer new gaming experiences, so much so that people are willing to spend money on the typical unpolished launch titles rather than wait for better games to arrive down the road. With the console being the cheapest to buy AND the cheapest to develop for, I think it's safe to say that the Wii has already cemented an immense amount of 3rd party support for itself, especially with companies like Disney and EA dedicating entire gaming studios to Wii development.

It's ironic that titles like Red Steel and SMB, which top Amazon's Wii sales charts, are better off with worse reviews than they are with rave ones in the interest of securing more Wii 3rd party support...

Nintendo Gaming / Amazon Wii Top 10 list for Nov. 27th...surprising...
« on: November 28, 2006, 07:14:38 AM »
For the ending week of Nov. 26th:

1. Rayman: Raving Rabbids—Ubisoft
2. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz—Sega
3. Red Steel—Ubisoft
4. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess—Nintendo
5. Excite Truck—Nintendo
6. Trauma Center: Second Opinion—Atlus
7. Call of Duty 3—Activision
8. Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam—Activision
9. Madden NFL 07—EA
10. Need for Speed Carbon—EA

I actually think this is good news. Everyone was going to buy Zelda anyway, but it was the fear that "Nintendo owners only buy Nintendo games." which killed much of the Cube's 3rd party chances.

With this list, it's quite clear that 3rd parties are making some serious bank off the Wii, especially with the development costs likely being far lower for Wii games than 360 or PS3.

Not sure how accurate these numbers are, but check the site.

I could easily believe these numbers to be true, but I suspect they might be fabricated.

However, click on the Wii poll to vote and you'll see the predicted winner.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii hits pre-Thanksgiving: spread the faith!
« on: November 16, 2006, 10:09:10 AM »
Nov. 23rd is Thanksgiving this year. Obviously, US citizens will very likely have their Wiis by that time.

Thanksgiving means a family gathering for most: piles of relatives and children who don't live in your home.

This is a GOLDEN opportunity to demonstrate the Wii to extended family members, and luckily, we'll all have Wii Sports as the best example of this.

I know the extra 3 Wiimotes won't be cheap, but if you sell back some of your old games to Gamestop/EB (which I did), you can wind up not spending any "real" money on accessories. Take a good, hard look at all of your old GC, DS and GBA games: are you ever going to play those again?

I'll be bringing my Wii to thanksgiving this year and I'm sure it'll go over well. Frankly, I wonder if Nintendo had this planned for the US launch from the start...

Let's also use this thread for Thanksgiving/family feedback when it happens.
