Nintendo Gaming / Where the hell are the US Wii ads?!
« on: November 06, 2006, 02:26:15 PM »
Ok, so the Japanese Wii commercials are out, but youtube doesn't yield any bona fide US/Canada/UK Wii commercials.

What gives?

Anyone seen a REAL Wii ad on TV? There are some fake US ones up on youtube but nothing I've seen looks like an actual ad.

Anyone? I'm starting to wonder if Nintendo doesn't believe that they don't need to spend money on advertising with the prehype they've already generated...

Nintendo Gaming / Another secret character revealed in the SSBB trailers?
« on: November 03, 2006, 05:34:59 AM »
Alright, I'm convinced...

First of all, note the following level:

We previously believed it to be Pit's but the new Pit level was basically revealed in the latest SSBB trailer (the one with the crumbling platforms and the statues).

So who the hell does this level belong to?

I think Sakurai dropped enough info for us to determine yet another secret character. The clues we had previous were:

1. The light blue line pattern on the ground with a purple pulse running through it.

2. The hovering platforms with the glowing yellow line around them.

3. The glowing blue crystal with a semicircle railing around it stuck to the bottom of the stage which appears to be holding the level aloft and the expansive landscape below.

4. The rising sun emblem next to Snake before he pops out of the box.

And in the latest trailer, we received a NEW clue...

5. The moon, planet or something which VERY CLEARLY floats past in the background.

Trouble is, I'm at a total loss for whose level this could be, which is why I'm posting my findings here. The level was first believed to be incomplete, but after having seen it brought back in the second trailer, I think it definitely means something.

Anyone have any theories or ideas which might get the research going in the right direction?

Nintendo Gaming / Japanese Wii Ads...

Very much like what I expected.

Though, I'd bet money that the US ads will include more shots of attractive people using the controller...

Nintendo Gaming / New Gameplay Trailer

New gamplay trailer

This one actually shows Trauma Center and some shots of RRR.

Rayman will apparently include a lightgun minigame, which is all the more reason for me to get it.

I just pulled that title out of nowhere, but it perfectly describes my current feelings on Nintendo.

Most people seem to base their predictions for the Wii on the past performance of the GC, so readily ignoring the immense success that the DS has brought to the table (and piles of $$$ to boot). However, somewhere along the lines, Nintendo figured out the mainstream.

This is only an example of how they've recently reached out to broader audiences. They've also been running DS "Touch Generations" ads which show adults in common situations: waiting to pick up your kid at school, waiting for your spouse to finish shopping. Then, these people pull out a DS running one of the TG games, and the slogan "Do something with your nothing." is proudly shown as people pet their Nintendogs or improve their brains.

Seriously, Nintendo was like a lost child last gen, but I firmly believe they've evolved into something big and scary, something with teeth and claws, something Sony and MS should be afraid of.

I don't know if they hired a new ad agency or what, but it's like something suddenly clicked in them. It's like they get it now. It's like, out of the blue, they figured out how to understand their audience and capture them.

And I think the DS was only the beginning. It was their training, their test of competence, and they passed with flying colors. They now know what it takes to reach out to people, people beyond the standard gaming audience, and capture their hearts and minds with virtual puppies and improved brain function.

Now the Wii looms on the horizon. Same game plan as the DS: nail down the hardcores with the tried and tested franchises, then introduce the non-gamer franchises guaranteed to bring in the casual or non-game: Brain Age, Wii Dogs and I guarantee it, Wii Aerobics.

Nintendo went from being a bumbling idiot to a renaissance man. To this day, I wonder what inspired the change.

Regardless, one thing is quite clear: the once laughing stock of the gaming industry, the sea turtle, now cruises these waters as the shark.

Thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / Mmmmmmm....SHORTAGES?!?
« on: October 26, 2006, 09:09:05 AM »
Now NINTENDO says Wiis might be hard to come by...

Despite having the largest allocation of units available at launch, Nintendo still expects DS-like shortages when the Wii finally makes it hugely anticipated entrance later in the year.

Speaking during the release of their first half financial reports, Nintendo's Yoshihiro Mori confirmed that the Japanese publisher and hardware manufacturer is on course to ship 6 million units before March 31st 2007, but suggested this may not be enough to supply the likely demand for Nintendo's leap.

Whether Nintendo will be able to increase production to meet such demand has yet to be confirmed, though the decision to maintain the allocation at 6 million suggests that Wii shortages could be a problem going into the New Year.

It's Japan, yes, but it bodes well for the Wii.

Nintendo Gaming / How long until "Aerobics Training Wii"?
« on: October 24, 2006, 09:56:03 AM »
The DS brought in the casual gamer with promises of being smarter and sharper with brain training.

How long until we see an "Aerobics Training" game for the Wii announced?

It's pretty obvious so I'm sure some company out there is making it. Clutching a Wiimote in each hand and performing exercises while the Wii instructs you turns the system into a poor-man's personal trainer.

With accelerometers, the Wii can tell if you're not moving the Wiimotes fast enough and scold you accordingly.

Only question is, will they get Richard Simmons to star in the game? :-P

For anyone who was wondering, it's basically a Mario Golf MMOG: add in leveling up, a shop, online play, and some illegal outfits and that's the game.

Also, this is proof that the Wii version HAS to be online. Without the online component, the game doesn't have anything going for it.

Nintendo Gaming / I have the money for the Wii...but...
« on: September 18, 2006, 06:50:52 PM »
I did it: sold back all of the GC games I don't play anymore (which is just about all of them) to Gamestop. They have a special going on right now where you can bring in 3 games and get an extra $10 in store credit. I HIGHLY recommend this if you have a big ol' pile of games you never play like I did.

So I have $272 is store credit now. Good stuff. Problem is, will I even be able to GET a Wii from Gamestop?

They're still not taking preorders, and it occurred to me that 4,000,000 worldwide isn't as much as I had first imagined it to be. With Amazon Wii preorders selling out in under a day, frankly, I'm concerned about my chances of getting one, even if I do have some connections to the folks at Gamestop.

I've heard rumors that Gamestop might not even be doing preorders at ALL and that we'll be looking at a "line up at midnight" scenario. Being the type who prefers to not be dragging ass at work the next day, I'd prefer to preorder.

Anyone else sharing similar concerns?

General Chat / Roomba = Man's Best Friend

Seriously, if you hate vacuuming, you should consider buying one of these things. We got one for my parents' place recently and it worked so well that I went out to buy my own after borrowing it and trying it at my house.

You'll be stunned at the amount of sh*t the thing picks up when you go to empty it after it's done vacuuming. It even has a charging dock which it automatically returns to at the end of its vacuuming cycle to recharge its battery. It has sensors to ensure that it won't fall down stairs and will generally work its way around the edge of a room with a little brush which knocks crap out of the corners so it can be vacuumed up.

I love the damn thing. I leave for work in the morning, hit the button to tell it to clean and I'll find it sitting in its dock when I get home with a full load of hair, sand and crap which I didn't even know was on the floor. It even cleans the shag carpet in my room.

The only catch is that you need to pick up and remove things which you wouldn't be able to get with a regular vacuum, which makes it not really a catch at all considering that you'd have to do that anyway if you wanted to vacuum the floor.

There's a special deal at Bed Bath and Beyond right now with a 20% coupon which they've been mailing to people. If you call them, they'll send you a coupon which takes the price of the robot from $279 to $223. It seems pricey, but a decent vacuum goes anywhere from $150-400 and rather than buy one which I need to push around, I'd rather buy one that'll do the work without me.

The best part is that my roommate's GF wants to bitch at me for not cleaning but she can't do that since I paid for a device to do it for me.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Virus Sightings
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:43:14 AM »
This belongs both here and the DS board, actually, but it primarily involves the Wii.

I've noticed that Nintendo products, especially the latest ones, have a viral effect on people: once they try it, they're determined to go out and get one of their own. Such is true with the DS I won in the birthday contest which was given to a friend and then promptly stolen by his mother after he made the mistake of making a reference to Animal Crossing and then had to show it to her to explain what he was talking about.

She just recently gave it back (after 2 months or so) and went out and bought her own DS, AC and a copy of Nintendogs (since she loves chihuahuas with a passion).

Yesterday, I went to Gamestop to pick up Killer 7 and Rayman DS. I asked the two clerks about Wii preorders and they both expressed excitement about the Wii, one of them saying "I can't wait!". This surprised me as I had long ago resigned myself to the notion that any game store employee would more than likely be a Sony/MS fanboy, usually MS. These two had been converted by just the promise of the Wii on the horizon.

So, in the interest of that, report occurrences of the "Nintendo Virus", be it Wii, DS or otherwise. If anyone you know has opted to buy a DS because of a game they tried or if you've seen Wii excitement in people who you didn't expect to see it in (game store employees, friends who don't game much, etc.) report it here.

I remember someone had seen a Wii ad already. Feel free to report sightings of those as well.

General Gaming / Nintendo and Blizzard race for my money...
« on: July 24, 2006, 08:06:47 AM »
Dammit, dammit, dammit...

I was all set on never playing WoW ever again, but with this new development, I'm tempted.

I always played a shadow priest as my main, and shadow priests are excellent against paladins. However, I play Alliance so I never got to use my abilities to crush paladins by the pile.

Now that the horde will have them, it means there will be tons of ripe targets for PvP and the only thing I enjoyed about WoW was the PvP...

It's a race between Nintendo and Blizzard. If the Wii launches first, I'll invest heavily in that and likely be more than entertained enough to not switch to WoW.

If the expansion launches first, I'll likely fall victim to that and level my Draenei shaman while enjoying toying with the hapless paladins of the horde.

Dammit, Blizzard...

Nintendo Gaming / Fanboy Homework: Rent Rayman 3
« on: July 22, 2006, 10:07:13 PM »
Upon the news of Rayman Raving Rabbids being made a Wii temp exclusive, I figured I'd do some research about the franchise because I had never actually PLAYED a Rayman game.

I completed Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc in 6-7 hours, but I rushed through and certainly didn't unlock everything.

I'll say first and foremost that the game's only real flaws are a lack of polish (could have used subtitles for some of the voice acting) and it's a bit short. For being a game which was developed for all consoles, I can hardly blame it for being this way. I've yet to see an all console release that registers in my mind as a AAA title.

But I enjoyed it. I loved the voice acting (which is very well done), the jokes (of which there are many, some rather lewd at that: the ESRB must just not have EARS in order to let some of these go by), and the platforming was challenging and constant.

It reminded me very much of the 16-bit era's platformers, like Rocket Knight Adventures and Earthworm Jim, except it was brought into 3D very well, reminding me of Conker's Bad Fur Day. The bosses were generally VERY creative, with the last boss being a multistage epic.

The thing about Rayman gameplay (at least 3) is that you never know what to expect next. One minute, you'll be using a grapple line to swing from grapple point to grapple point, then catapulting off of exploding balloons, then scaling a wall, shimmying across the vines on the ceiling, then all off a sudden you're thrown into a minigame-like sequence where you're mashing the A and B buttons to paddle up a waterfall while trying to dodge piranhas. Then, you'll be using your detachable fists to pummel enemies and use the special item they drop to bash down a door or activate your next objective with a guided rocket which you yourself can aim. Then, you race down a mountain on a snowboard, stomp enemies with a giant mech after killing its original pilot, and race up a set of platforms as lava rises underneath you, nearly killing you at every step of the way.

It was always fun, but some points in particular had me sitting forward on the couch, grinning with glee. Something about some of these mini-segments just brought out the oldskool hardcore gamer in me; the 10 year old who absolutely would NOT get up to go to the bathroom until he had cleared this last room.

The more I reflect upon it, the more I like it.

If you haven't tried the game, I'd very much recommend you rent a copy and give it a whirl. The story is a bit difficult to follow at the beginning, but the platforming is so absolutely solid that it's easily forgiven, especially near the end where you'll be treated to rooms with invisible platforms which you can only see in the mirror. A lot of the puzzles reminded me of Prince of Persia, no doubt because of the Ubi team's influence on both games.

At the very least, I'd say rent it just to get acquainted with Rayman. With the recent announcement of Rayman 4 becoming at least a timed Wii exclusive, and after the rumor that Ubi will be contributing a character to SSBB (given Ubi's support unprecedented Wii support, it's hard to argue, especially since they deserve it far more than that ingrate, Kojima) I think it all but confirms him for SSBB.

I know Snake already. Had I not, I would have sought a game of his so I could find out. Knowing what I now know about Rayman, I decided I wanted to know him as well pending his inclusion in SSBB.

The verdict: I like him. The games definitely have a quirky, comic edge to them (VERY reminiscent of Earthworm Jim), but the dedication to some of the older platforming archetypes has won me over.

If you're at all a fan of platformers, you need to try this game. I tried it because I wanted to understand the character of Rayman and I'm glad I did. I know it's not 100%, but were he to be in SSBB, I can honestly say that he earned that spot, with his most recent game being a testament to the hardcore platforming and action upon which the video game market was built. Rayman offers a throwback to when games weren't afraid to bombard you with challenging gameplay which is completely unforgiving for inexperienced gamers.

I know it means nothing in the grand scheme of things, but Rayman has this old SSB fanatic's seal of approval.

General Gaming / Sony bashing = laughing at a handicapped kid...
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:46:48 AM »
...an evil, imperialistic handicapped kid, yes, but handicapped, nonetheless.

Seriously, I used to revel in their failings because it meant better things for Nintendo, but now, with the most recent news that only 10-20% of cell processors manufactured will actually work, (thanks to BigJim for the link), it's all just too much for me to comment on anymore.

Was this their intention? To make such an assclown of the entire company that we eventually just couldn't laugh any harder at them?

Every piece of bad news just gets worse and worse. At this point, I've nothing left to say. It's all been said: their imminent problems are plain and obvious to even the most pedestrian of observers. Tearing Sony down is too easy. Before, you had to make a compelling argument as to why Sony was going to do poorly. Now, it's like citing common knowledge: you're perfectly safe in saying it because you won't hear a murmur of protest at its mention.

It's grown old for me. Bad news for them is so commonplace that I don't even react anymore.

Anyone else feeling the same way?

General Gaming / My Mac is a better PC than my PC...
« on: July 01, 2006, 12:10:33 AM »
The scourge of any Mac user is that, if you want to play PC games, you're SOL except for the major releases like World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament. The only option was to keep a gaming PC on the side (which any PC gamer likely still does).

The PC is and always will be the 4th console, but that whole issue up and blew away when Apple decided to drop THIS into their OS..

In case you missed all of the commercials, all new Macs are running on Intel components. Someone at Apple must have realized that this means you can effectively run Windows XP and beyond NATIVELY on your Mac. This isn't emulation, it's the Windows OS running right off of the Mac's internal hardware.

I tested it with UT2K4: maxed all of the settings, full lighting, texture detail, the works, and it runs PRISTINE. Some part of me expected it to run like crap for some reason, but it was flawless. In many cases, the PC build of a game will probably run better than the Mac build because the original hardware it was designed for was typically Intel hardware.

I don't know if anyone is considering a Mac or considering a NEW Mac, but I just wanted to attest to the fact that Boot Camp does INDEED work.

Now I can get Prey and Gears of War without having to pick up a 360...

General Gaming / My Sony Rant, Consolidated
« on: June 05, 2006, 10:55:47 AM »
Sony has done everything it possibly could over the past year to turn itself into the biggest laughing stock in the gaming industry. The only thing left is for Ken Kutaragi to be involved in a child sex scandal.

So far, they've:

1. Bet all the marbles on Blu-Ray as a media format when it's likely to fail
If you don't know, Sony has had 3 failed media formats in the past (Betamax, Minidisc and UMD). Blu-Ray will be their forth attempt to push a proprietary media format into the world and collect "phat lewtz" off of licensing fees. Problem is, HD-DVD is being supported by far more powerful studios, such as Universal and Time Warner, who intend to do everything they can to stamp out Blu-Ray like a misfired bottle rocket. These studios intend to release such giant movies as Lord of the Rings and King Kong in HD on the same day Sony releases Blu-Ray players. Now, they're trying to launch BR players at around $900. If you don't remember, VHS killed Betamax for one reason: because it was CHEAPER. If Sony truly wants to push BR as a format, they need to make it affordable to everyone and they are doing the exact opposite.

2. Severely overestimated the selling power of the Playstation name
It has long been true that PS is the most profitable venue for Sony. Only trouble is, this has very little to do with Sony's own efforts but is instead thanks to the efforts of 3rd party developers who brought games with large fanbases (Final Fantasy) or huge controversy (GTA) to their console.

In this coming gen, Sony doesn't have the year-long lead on its competition, nor does it have the necessary 3rd party support to push PS3s. With the 360 sharing over 50% of its titles already, reasons to buy a PS3 can be counted on one hand (mainly, MGS4 and FF13).

3. Overpriced the PS3 by a long-shot
Many were shocked when Kutaragi (or whoever it was) insisted with a straight face that, at $600, the PS3 was "too cheap". The truth is, the people at Sony might actually BELIEVE this because, in Sony's eyes, the PS3 is both the successor to it's Playstation line AND a "cheap" Blu-Ray player.

Problem is, I've seen little evidence that consumers will want EITHER, with HDDVD appealing at a lower pricetag and with more popular movies and more movies in general and with the PS3 having few "killer apps", the logic that people will pay $600 because they want both a PS3 and a Blu-Ray player rapidly evaporates.

4. Tried to make a media format succeed via piggybacking it on another product, likely dooming both
The PS3 is Sony's only hope for Blu-Ray and thus, it was their decision to push the PS3 out into the world as a combo unit much like they did with the PS2. The DVD playback on PS2 was highly successful in pushing the console as a cheaper alternative to current DVD players, which were as expensive if not more so.

This would work again with the PS3...were it not being saddled with Sony's proprietary media instead of the format which will very likely be the dominant next generation media format.

As near as I can tell, Sony is setting themselves up for a huge failure. Every Sony fanboy I know has actually come out and repented because they too are appalled at what Sony is doing as of late. If the PS3 was going to launch with its premium package at a competitive $300-400, then I could definitely see them as a contender and as a valid vessel which might carry Blu-Ray into the realm of success.

But at $600, the PS3 becomes a luxury item, and with Nintendo and MS on the gaming front and Universal and Time Warner on the movie front, Sony is being attacked from both sides and their only hope for survival, the PS3, is so badly overpriced that even Sony's fanbase is abandoning them.

Unless Sony decides to drop the price, likely taking an even bigger loss on every console sold, then I cannot see them having any degree of success in the coming console war. If the PSP is any indication, Sony products are PERFECTLY capable of failing, most likely because of the $250 price tag and proprietary media format for movies which makes the console pale in comparison to portable DVD players which can go for as little as $70 and will use existing DVDs which the customer already owns.

So, in a nutshell, I think that Sony can either drop the price of the PS3 or they're royally f*cked. I wouldn't be surprised if MGS4 and FF13 were quickly announced as coming to other consoles shortly after being released on the PS3 due to very poor sales, leaving Sony with little to nothing to speak of in terms of exclusive titles.

MS has already made it blatantly clear that they intend to attack Sony full on this gen, having laid claim to many titles which would have otherwise been PS3 exclusive. With the Wii coming in as a seriously strong contender, Sony will have to convince players somehow that, despite the fact that its competitors are cheaper and offering similar game libraries to the PS3, the PS3 is worth paying $600 for.

Frankly, I don't see it happening.
