Nintendo Gaming / RE:IGN Leaks Some Rev Specs Again! 3/29/06
« on: March 29, 2006, 06:20:39 PM »
I really think that IGN article was irresponsibily written, and garbage.

Here is why.  The comparisons between Xbox 360 and the new Revolution supposed SPECS are not put in context.

They don't explain what anything means, or how numbers don't tell everything.  They purposely went out to make Revolution's numbers look poorly, without commenting on benefits of the stats.

It would have been better to have reported the story without any comparisons.  Let the bloggers do that.  Then as a more respectable journalist dig into the numbers, and find out what developers think about the lower numbers and see if they compare it to just an Xbox.

Breaking this into two stories would have been better in my opinion.

Personally after Metroid Fusion.  The story I would use is that the parasites fused with the suit began to eat and destroy Samus's control of the suit and she loses control and is forced to destory the suit.  This unfortunately happens at the worst time, in a middle of a mission.

Now she must hunt down a spare suit on the planet and upgrade to the point she can accomplish her mission.

Add in the new bounty hunters trying to hunt down her spare suit parts as well, and trying to kill her...and you have a story with several plot points and twists.

Best of all, you can play as Samus in a brand new light, as a human FIRST.  She may find a basic suit first...and then you graphically represent her armor forming on her as she gains more powers.  (Gravity jumps can be represented by her robotic boots-legs.)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: No Simultaneous Worldwide Launch
« on: March 29, 2006, 04:55:48 AM »
I don't think this was ever Nintendo's plan.  Didn't someone in Nintendo mention releasing in all areas within a single quarter?  I imagine Nintendo will release in America and Japan before November and then later for the rest of the world (November-December.)

It really depends on when the games are done and ready.

If Nintendo gets only one or two games ready then I see them launching first in Japan (Around August or September)  then US around October November and Europe in December.

If more America friendly games are ready...or if Smash Brothers Melee and Metroid Prime 3 are ready early then I completely see Revolution being released in America first around August or September.

I can't wait for the virtual console to play Mischief Makers again.

When you read several of the comments Nintendo makes about secrets left with the Nintendo Revolution (and even going back to previous systems) you realize that Nintendo views secrets as anything about a system they are not telling us about yet.

The most recent IGN interview is a great example.

paraphrase:

We have several little secrets we have not talked about.  They could be games, or hardware, or just little things.  It really depends on what you are talking about "big secret."  What we have might be considered big and huge, or it might it something simple but still neccessary to keep secret.

Ok, that is borderline writing my own statement, but that is how I read her comments.

So this big secret could be huge.

A PPU,
An earlier than expected launch,
something magical about the hardware they we don't know yet.

Or it could be something smaller.

The controller now has two big A/B buttons on top.
The controller has a microphone in it.
The New IP "Whatever it Is Revolution" will be out at launch.
The launch lineup

Or it could be something important but ultimately trivial to the gamer

What the costs for games on the virtual console are.
The means that Nintendo allows you to get virtual console games.

I guess the point is not to get your hopes too high on this secret, because it could be the MEGATON!!!  Or it could be just a cool bit of information that we didn't know we should get excited about.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What GO could mean if true

Talon:  Ultimate Brain Games for DS will be WiFi enabled, and have a version of GO to play.

Touch Screen GO is all you will ever need...and no messy cleanup after the game.

(Or complex adding to see who won.)

KDR:  Not when the player is a button masher anyway.

Imagine the combos a novice could do just pushing buttons and raising the controller, up and down.

HA!!

I like this idea alot.  The best part of this idea is that it could be modified to work within the Controller Shell.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metroid Hunters!!!
« on: March 24, 2006, 06:26:54 AM »
You know I understand where everyone is coming from that it feels different, but I still don't think it feels like a traditional FPS.  The Atmosphere and the pacing is still very much traditional Prime. You still are moving in around in enviroments that are seeping with personality searching for clues to the story and upgrades.

I find that battles with the free look controls just become more intense and engaging then they were in Prime...although I do miss the dashing dodge moves from the original Prime series.

My favorite part of the single player mode is the battles with the different hunters.  I have only faced two of them, but each one has been different and surprising engaging and challenging.  It feels like a nice blend of fighting a boss with a pattern and fighting a Bot with more random and situational AI.

The WiFi multiplayer is fantastic.  I just wish that during the quick match games they didn't have health powerups to collect.  It is the one element of deathmatch in any game I can't stand...because you are not on equal footing, and someone can retreat to gain more health.  (BORING)  However, Prime Hunters even has it more annoying because you can double up your straighting health.  I was losing bad in all my matches until I learned that.  Now I immediately run to get 200 health before I start fighting...I find that pretty annoying to have to do.

By the way, I think Nintendo is proving with the DS that lesser technology does not mean a sacrifice to graphics quality.  Yes you could make this game look prettier on the PSP, but the experience is fluid, engaging and the graphics are already breathtaking.

Anyone worried about the Revolution needs to just look at what talented programmers are pulling off with the DS and shut up.

A Pokemon: TCG Online is pretty much the only way they are getting me to play a TCG game period.

But, I would love to have that online game.  (One single investment to play and gather all the cards.)

Ok.  This game looks amazing.  Great Graphic design.  (Which proves Wind Waker Graphics were awesome.)

Gameplay looks fresh and inventive.  (Actually new mechanics to master within the game.)

Potentially the game that continues the story from Wind Waker and possibly links it to Twillight Princess?

I dunno but I am excited about this game.

General Gaming / RE:what if the ps3-mote was revealed at E3?
« on: March 23, 2006, 03:48:41 AM »
I don't think Microsoft or Sony care to copy Nintendo's controller design yet.

The controller is an unproven variable to the public eye.  It is yet to be seen if Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot, or if these new controllers really will bring new life to Nintendo.

Until the results are shown leaning toward Nintendo's success or away from it I think Sony is playing it safe.

Remember the Sony PS3 pad they showed was horribly designed and was attacked by all media...so Sony is naturally redesigning the controller for better mass appeal, not necessarily new functions.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why June will kick Sony's ass (speculation)
« on: March 23, 2006, 03:44:25 AM »
The Surprise launch means that those who will buy it first will like you said, the hardcores...but that also leaves a couple of months for word of mouth and regular gamers to play the system and experience the Revolution without comparing it both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.  That is obviously a huge advantage.

I also don't think Japan is the best market to launch the system in.  As mentioned before Japan is going to buy this new device no matter what.  The whole concept is tailor made for them, and it will compete quite well against Sony.

So the earliest launch should go to America where Nintendo will have the hardest time competing.  This will give Nintendo a headstart in proving their ideas without 2 competing systems.

Remember some gamers just hate MS and won't buy the Xbox360, they are waiting for Sony or Nintendo.  Others, just can't afford the price entry right now.  (We know Xbox360 will get a small price reduction when Sony's system hits the street) so launching cheaper and earlier makes your system look like the best deal.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why June will kick Sony's ass (speculation)
« on: March 22, 2006, 11:05:41 AM »
Ian I am talking about 5 big launch games from Nintendo that would obviously be big enough to sell through Christmas.

The DS didn't have what I am describing.  The DS didn't have 5 solid first person games at launch...they very rushed 3rd party games.

So if Nintendo launched June or August with 3-5 great first party games, then they would pretty much be launching a first party game for each month.  If Metroid for Revolution can be as solid as Metroid Hunters that would be Nintendo's "Halo" for the hardcore gamers.

Now, 3rd parties could have a few extra months to polish there games before Christmas and not have to worry about the big N hording all the profits with their stellar games.

Finally, remember Nintendo's virtual system is still going to be up and running with a strong backlog of games for gamers to buy.  And I understand you don't think Nintendo should rely or even consider those as "new" games for the Revolution.  But, you have to admit that service will be a huge draw for several gamers that plan to spend more money on that service than on new Revolution games.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Hunter Controls
« on: March 22, 2006, 10:58:53 AM »
I am finding the more I play the more comfortable the controls are.

It is still a pain to find the sweet spot to hit the scan visor with the thumb strap, or to switch weapons, but that will just take time.

This game above all others has cemented my investment in a DS Lite though.  The DS has been my favorite system since the Nintendo 64 came out.  It is a perfect blend of amazing 2D games and solid 3D game experience.

I think people will have less problems when the DS Lite comes out.  Hopefully soon.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why June will kick Sony's ass (speculation)
« on: March 22, 2006, 10:52:10 AM »
So true.

What does the lack of games in June matter, if by November you have the same more more games at launch than Sony?

By the time June comes around Xbox 360s will be plentiful to buy.  If someone hasn't bought it, then its because they want to wait and see what is offered on the other systems, or waiting for that killer game.

Nintendo could probably have:

Mario Revolution
Metroid Revolution

as launch titles by June, and perhaps even

Smash Brothers Revolution.

But hey, lets not limit our early launch discussion to June...because that does seem highly unlikely.  However, August seems more than doable...it seems practically a nobrainer.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why June will kick Sony's ass (speculation)

IGN doesn't know everything.  They are going by information that final development kits won't be out till June...which several have explained aren't 100% needed to develop a full game...and IGN is going by hearsay from third party developers.

Now those 3rd party developers are more legit source...however the news about Sony delaying is relatively new...if Nintendo feels it can pull off an early launch it may announce something soon and began to prep 3rd party developers for such a launch.

There are several ways Nintendo could do this.

1)Ship the final kits early.
2)Send detailed specs of the Revolution to developers so they know what better to expect while optimizing their games.
3)Release with more 1st person games and less 3rd party.  Letting the 3rd party support carry Nintendo's Holiday season instead of additional 1st party games.  (Launch 5 games at launch and plan next games released for January...then leave a big opportunity for 3rd parties to own Christmas sales.)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why June will kick Sony's ass (speculation)
« on: March 22, 2006, 10:01:30 AM »
June is way too early.

I could see August.  Give developers two months with the final Development Kits so that 3rd party games could be ready to go.  A Mid August launch would give about a 3 month head start on Sony which would be big, and provide Nintendo with enough time to launch its games.

Personally I don't believe the decision will be based on production of the Revolution, because I believe that could start any day now and be set.  I believe that it all depends when Nintendo's own games are finished for launch.  If Nintendo could launch with 3 strong first party games in June, then I believe Nintendo would do it.

However, I think it is going to take till August to have those 3 games ready...and in fact we may see ourselves with 4-5 first party games ready by then and some third party support.

I am willing to bet that Nintendo is currently pushing for an early launch than November after Sony's announced date.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Point Blank DS announced!
« on: March 22, 2006, 07:02:40 AM »
I think the gameplay will suffer without having a gun.

Instead of relying on aiming skills you are just clicking on moving objects.  Not nearly as veseral or satisfying.

However, It is nice to see more games made for the system.

I would have rather had this announced for the Revolution though.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Hunter Controls
« on: March 22, 2006, 07:00:18 AM »
I just spent some time using the stylus in the default mode.  I may try to slow down the sensitivity and see how I do.  With the Thumbstrap I think you need to speed it up, but perhaps with the stylus you need to slow it down.

I wish you could map the buttons.  I would make choosing missles the L button, A and B both switch to alternative forms and XY to be used for changing weapons.  Select would be good for the scan visor.

Still the game works much better than I ever imagined a FPS to perform on the DS.

Nintendo Gaming / Hunter Controls
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:28:01 AM »
I just picked up Metroid Prime Hunters.  I played around the game and have been really enjoying the experience.  WIFI is surprisingly smooth and only once did I have any issues with smooth gameplay.

The question I have is what controls are everyone using.  Because I am trying to find the best, and I am having a difficult time jumping, switch forms and weapons.

Right now I am using the thumbstrap, sensitivity level 8 or 9.  And regular default controls.

I find it easier to change forms and such with the stylus, but then I can't fire or anything.

What are your settings and what are your thoughts on the controls?

The Nintendo Website has a great history of Nintendo page in its business section of the website.

Also there is a book you could read: "Game Over:  How Nintendo Conquered the World"

I dunno about any other sources.

I am also doing a business profile project for school, so I am looking for similar information.

I am really looking for business practices and management style.

General Gaming / RE: confirmed: PS3 = Nov. 2006
« on: March 16, 2006, 10:57:18 AM »
If Sony decided to sell multiple size harddrives it would make since to package one within the unit and then package that is smaller than one would want...like a 10GIG or something, and then sell the 60GIG along side it.

You say, but hey they cost the same price...and they do, but if you do it this way, you can get people to fork over more money for the larger harddrive.

General Gaming / RE: confirmed: PS3 = Nov. 2006

What bothers me about the HDD Required is that Sony is telling developers to expect a 60 or was it 80 GIG Harddrive, and it will be upgradeable?  Why would you need that much space?  And how would upgrading work?  Do you have to swap harddrives back and forth or will a transfer service be available?

I don't like that at all.  This PS3 thing is just getting out of hand.  I think Sony decided to make the UBER-SYSTEM, but I really feel it is going to be too expensive and have too many functions to it to be successful.

Its just like what Sony is pushing with the PSP.  It is moving it further and further away from gaming with its new added features, and some of the features are just stupid.  PSone downloads?  why bother.
