Nintendo Gaming / The VC Gift Game
« on: December 10, 2007, 10:21:04 AM »
Tis the Season to give gifts, even Nintendo thinks so, by offering a cool new feature to send gifts to people.

So, lets see how giving the NWR message boarders are.  I propose a simple game, with only a few rules.

1)Give a gift VC game to person that posted above you.
2)After giving a game.  Post and tell us who you gave a gift to, and if you want which game.
3)Do not post on the thread unless you have given a gift, and even if you give multiple gifts just post once...and lets see how much love we can share to the entire community.

Anyway, so how does it work with me since I am starting the game?  I am going to give a gift tonight to one of the people signed up to play the Winter Mafia Game, so if you have not signed up and want to play go sign up now.

NWR Forums Discord / Winter Mafia Planned for Dec 17 Who is Interested.
« on: December 07, 2007, 01:44:02 AM »
Alright finals are coming up and we are going to have some extra free time.  Who is interested in a game of Mafia.  If we start the game on the 17th we have a good 9 days to play before Christmas, and everyone should have enough free time to play.

I could push up the date as well to start on the weekend so like the 15th or 16th as well.

Sign Up is here, and don't worry this will be a very traditional Mafia game with perhaps only 1 or 2 very minor twists.

Ok.  The Winner of this Mafia will receive a Gifted Virtual Console Game...but how does that work with teams being played.  Simple.  After the game is over, we will open a thread to vote for the best player on that team, be it Townie or Mafia...even if that player died they are still eligible to be voted for best player...and since it is a thread you can argue for your support...you just can't cast your vote for yourself.  Also I know what a bummer it is for special roles, so if you are the killer, or the Bomber you can try to sway votes for yourself to win...even if you are not on the winning team.

NWR Forums Discord / My Super Mario Galaxy Review
« on: November 09, 2007, 06:36:22 AM »
Wow.  Just Wow.  Nintendo has made the ultimate 3D platforming experience.  It is so good that it feels completely 4D with all the planetoid gravity special effects.

The game gives the player a brand new experience by making the genre fresh and exciting again, but at the same time is filled with everything a Mario fan could want from a Mario game.

Classic Mario enemies
Wonderful music
Air Ships
Suits are back
Amazing level design
The Fire Flower first time ever in 3D.

Galaxy is like an orgy of Mario goodness and perfection.

1,000,000.50 out of 10.

General Gaming / This really pissed me off
« on: October 29, 2007, 02:13:56 AM »
I found this at Go Nintendo talking about the Pirated Super Mario Galaxy video and whether it was real or not.

#  Arkdium Says:
October 30th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

It’s not fake people and I think this is completely right to do it and there is no problem with it, since you people live in a country where you can just go and buy the game in a store or just preorder it, as if it bread or milk, not everyone can do that, and I completely support that people who CAN’T buy original games do this kind of stuff. Sure, a Japanese company who is in fact the #2 company in Japan now (after Toyota I think) is loosing many millions from piracy, but if they don’t move their ass, and sell their games officially in countries that are in Latin America, or in Asia, or even in Australia and Europe, which they get the fing game with a very long wait.

Between, I have a modded wii too.

This guy is justifying stealing because it is supposedly only hurting a giant company and other countries are too poor to buy food?  Or is it they are upset that capitalism and free trade has made products available around the world for everyone to enjoy?  I don't quite understand.

But the main point I believe he is missing is that video games are a luxury.  It is a hobby that you do not need to live.  It can't be compared to food, shelter, water, companionship.  You can't justify stealing a video game because you are poor.    And this kind of stuff totally hurts more than company.  If pirating was legalized and justified no games would be created because the companies couldn't make a profit.  People would lose their jobs, and video games, movies, music in current form would seize to exist.

Perhaps that is looking at to too big.  Instead, because of pirating we currently pay more for games than we would without pirating.  But I guess that is ok, because everyone in all these countries that can buy video games are rich enough to drop whatever it costs us to play games.

NWR Forums Discord / New Smash Brothers Brawl Mode Confirmed
« on: October 29, 2007, 01:55:43 AM »
Did you hear, there is a new mode in Brawl that wipes the PS3 and PSP from existence.  Apparently once you buy the game, it is like Sony was just a bad dream.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Messaging to Computer E-mail
« on: September 24, 2007, 07:16:11 AM »
I noticed when you are putting Wii Friend codes it seems you can also put a computer on there.  But does anyone know actually how to do this, or a good website explaining how to do this?  I have tried and it really doesn't make sense, but I know I would like to send pictures from Metroid Prime 3 to myself via the Wii...so does anyone have any ideas?

After several conflicts and uprising from the players against the host.  Stevey finally committed Seppuku to make amends for his mistakes.

Unfortunately he found no volunteer to be his second, and the death was agonizingly painful.

Now Spak-Spang is hijacking the game to bring you the last day of the game.  DAY 9.

Spak-Spang was voted out by one or two votes.  The townies rally to revenge their beloved Khush...before Spak-Spang was caught he choked and died on his own lies.  "I am not Mafiiiaaaaaaaaa."  Croak.

"Wow, that was anti-climatic."  Zach said digging himself out of his own grave.  "What kind of host gives a grave digger to save his own life, that is just weirder than the WB canceling Buffy but keeping Charmed on the air for who knows how many worthless seasons more."

With the host dead and the game now over, we must hope that people will come forward and reveal their hidden roles to rest of the players.  And it is quite disconcerting to me that a Suicide Bomber still lurks among the living townies just waiting for the stress of life to boil over before going BOOOM!!!!

Thus ends another SMASHING game of Mafia.

Let us use this thread to reflect over the game.  This game had many positives and negatives to it, and just like any mafia game I think constructive criticism is definitely needed to help create a better Mafia next game.

Again CONGRATS to the Townies and their dead savior Khush, for without his sacrifice and power this game may have turned up differently...ok probably not.

Nintendo Gaming / Official Boss Battle Discussions
« on: August 24, 2007, 03:04:13 AM »
Alright, so Brawl is going to have Bosses, nothing really too new about that.  Melee had two Bosses, it just means we are getting more.

So who do you want to see as Bosses in the games.  How do you want them to play?  Special rules to beating them?  Weaknesses? Special KOs?

This is the thread to post your desires, and how you would create the best Brawl Boss Encounter.

Example:

Crocomire

I would love a Boss like this whom must be defeated by pushing off the stage or into lava or something.  Instead of one Weak Spot, having his armored Skin break off revealing a soft spot would help characters with no range best this opponent.  Though the armored Skin will grow back, so you must be careful how you defeat this guy.

Nintendo Gaming / Predict the Daily Update Thread.
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:44:08 PM »
You get two points for a general guess. I.e. what section will be updated. Those general sections are:

Character Profile
Character Move/Action
How to Play
Game Modes
Stages
Items
Music
Notices

After that, there is the specific guess. Elaborate further on what is going to be updated in that section. Specific guesses would be for:

Character Profile - Name of character
Character Move/Action - Name of character and what moveset - Final smash, special moves, regular moves.
How To Play - What technique, rule or lesson would be given
Game Modes - Single Player, Custom, Classic, Sticker, Trophy, Multiplayer, etc.
Stages - What the stage name is and what franchise it represents or game. Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine. Smashville from Animal Crossing.
Items - What type of item - smash item, assist trophy or pokeball and the item or character it would be. I.E. Smash Item - Ray Gun. Assist Trophy - Toad. Pokeball - Psyduck.
Music - The franchise that will be represented by the music. I.E. Animal Crossing Music. Star Fox music.
Notices - What the notice will be. Announcement. Video. Audio. I'm just throwing it in for the heck of it.

Of course, extra bonus points of 6 could be awarded to people who are even more daring in their prediction. I.E., correctly guessing which composer was responsible for arranging the music, predicting a feature of a stage like Bridge of Eldin collapsing, Nintendogs assist trophy blocks screen, etc.

In some case, half points may be given. I.E. chose the right franchise or character for stage but not the game it came from, choose pokeball but not the right pokemon, choose the right character but not the right move update.

Double Update Posting

Finally, in the case of double updates, write out your first prediction and then specify that if there is a second prediction, this is your guess. However, the snag of double predictions is this. If there is only one update that day and your first prediction is incorrect but your prediction for the second update is the correct update, it doesn't count. The double update prediction isn't a two for one guess. I'll illustrate if you are confused.

Example:

Sep. 14/2007 Prediction

Music Update
Star Fox Music
Venom theme

2nd Update
New Character
Captain Falcon
Bounty hunter who punches fast

In the case of Sep. 14, there was only one update. The Ice Climbers. Therefore, the second update guess does not comply since there is only one update. Yes, the second guess was a character reveal but since that was the second guess and not the primary guess, it does not count.

Now let's say there had been two updates. The Ice Climbers and Kirby's Final Smash. Even though the primary guess is wrong, since there are two updates, the second update is allowed and it gets two points because of the Ice Climber update. So, I hope this gets everybody clear on how I keep track of points and award them.

Finally, there is not rule for how you phrase your prediction. You can do it like PartyBear, keep it general like Mashiro or you can follow what I've been doing. It's up to you. .

Khush's scoring system is now updated below.  One stop check to see how you are ranking.

Khushrenda - 58
Stevey - 45
Spak-Spang - 40
Party Bear - 31
NinjaWang - 30
Mashiro - 24
Sessha - 20
Luigi Dude - 18
Bill Aurion - 12
UERD - 11
Anubis6789 - 10
Nuclear Speed -10
Pap64 - 10
GeneralTragg - 9
Sonuis - 9
Anubis6789 - 8
Golden Phoenix - 8
KashogiStogi - 6
Louieturkey - 6
Luigihann - 6
Rachtman - 6
TVMan - 6
Bomb-omb - 4
Smash_Brother - 4
Adrock - 2
Capamerica - 2
Wandering - 2

Yes, a big part of the Smash Brothers Brawl discussion was spreading rumors and desires about characters you think deserve to be in the game.  Many posts have been made about what moves they could have and why each character should be in the game...and then the fun came with the spamming and arguing and fighting.  Instead of polluting other threads lets keep it confined to here.

General Gaming / Nerd Alert
« on: August 05, 2007, 02:05:12 AM »
Have any of you guys here seen the video series Nerd Alert that is featured on Game Spot and you can also find on You Tube?

Jimb0, is finally about to play some Zelda and getting excited about the Wii...and I am trying to find some ideas for him to do for Wii specific episodes.  If you have watched his shows, he usually doesn't do the typical review a game type show.  He has previewed Japanese imports mostly.

Anyway, if you have any ideas let me know...or if you have seen any episodes tell me what you think, and possibly what we could improve...constructive criticism only.

After watching the Microsoft Press conference I immediately wanted to know what everyone here thought.  So I jumped on and didn't see a thread specifically for reviewing and analyzing the press conferences.

This is a thread to talk about all the Press conferences, what you thought they did well, what was lacking, and I guess who won once we see all three.

General Chat / King of Kong
« on: March 26, 2007, 05:05:27 AM »
I dunno if anybody has seen or heard of the movie King of Kong, but it is fantastic...the best documentary I have seen.

It is the story of Steve Wiebe challenging Billy Mitchell's top score in Donkey Kong.  The Documentary is very fun and explores the very eccentric personalities of the championship gaming industry and Twin Galaxies in particular.

I would have never guessed that the arcade Donkey Kong is considered as the most difficult arcade game.  Nor, would I have imagined the dedication and true training it requires to compete in these competitions.

Anyway, we got to see an early screening of the movie at the AFI Dallas film festival.  The Director was on screen and it did a Q&A.

The top score record is now over a million and the machine's points did roll over.  To achieve scores as such, you are required to play the game for 3 hours.  In comparison the average game of Donkey Kong is around 3-5 minutes before game over.

This movie inspired me to go play Donkey Kong again, but I am depressed that the Virtual Console doesn't have true arcade ports, and I wish that it did.  Perhaps this movie can create an awareness for the demand of a true arcade perfect collection of Nintendo's classic arcade games.

Nintendo Gaming / Games Nintendo Should/Need to bring Online for 2007/2008
« on: February 22, 2007, 06:05:45 AM »
Ok, this is a different kind of online discussion.  I don't want to get into bashing or praising of the Virtual Console or how Nintendo has handled online so far.

Instead, I want to look at games coming out in the future and discuss whether they must go online or not.  What games does Nintendo really need to push online play in to not only compete but possibly even take a strong stand beside their competition in offering great online experience.

Mario Party 8:  Although this seems like a perfect online game, I don't think it is necessary to be online.  This game is more about the social party than the online party, and as such it is not a big deal if online is not an option.  Would it help the experience, sure but it won't break the experience.

Battalion Wars 2:  This game is a must for online.  For one it is a game that defines Nintendo perfectly.  Great game play and experience that is playable with all ages but not just for children.  The art style is unique and fantastic.  2-4 player online would be brilliant.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl:  I would not have said this game MUST be online, but Nintendo did, and as such it is the biggest most important game Nintendo can make online...and it must play perfectly.

Nintendo First Person Shooter:  Most people (including me) believed Metroid Prime 3 would be the game to go online...however it is debatable if this franchise has what it takes to be a great online experience.  However, a game that almost everyone agrees would be great online experience is Geist.  With work in balancing the system better than the original series, and pushing the ghost elements further you can have a very unique and exciting online experience.  But, will this game happen?  I think Nintendo realizes the potential of Geist and Battalion Wars even if they didn't sell well...and I believe Nintendo will give both franchises another chance on Wii.

Wii Sports 2:  I can't tell you how important it is to get Wii Sports 2 out for 2007 holiday season.  Wii Sports is the title that has brought the casual gamer to the living room to play games.  Wii Sports 2 needs to happen sooner than later, and it needs to be the game that introduces casual gamers to online gaming.

Animal Crossing Wii:  The Animal Crossing experience has already done online with a handheld system.  Not allowing the console to go online is a push in the other direction.

Pokemon Wii:  The consoles need a TRUE Pokemon game.  This hasn't happened yet, because the franchise started as a communal experience for portable gaming.  With the Wii online potential this is the first Nintendo console that can bring a communal experience to a Pokemon game, and therefore it should happen...and must happen.

Any thoughts and suggestions?  What games do believe Nintendo must bring online?  Why? And what games can leave the online experience out of the equation.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Wii Survey
« on: December 15, 2006, 02:19:28 AM »
This morning I checked my E-mail and got another Nintendo Survey.

It focused on the Nintendo Wii asking how it rates to other systems, what games you have played and your opinion of the games, what virtual console games have you used and such.  It was quite a long survey for Nintendo.

It had one true opinion section where you can write WHY you bought a Wii...use this space to also comment on Virtual Console games being slightly overpriced if you like.

So, just letting you know to watch your E-mail for this survey Nintendo needs to know what we think.

NWR Forums Discord / Freaky Stories of the Freaky Mii Kind.
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:26:09 AM »
Stories of the Mii creatures you may have seen:

Frog Lady

Born a twin in the beautiful land, she and her sister were ridiculed throughout life for their appearance.  One turned her inner anguish towards learning, and became a very wise and respected woman, despite her appearance.  Many would travel from around the globe for her blessings and knowledge.  This angered the other twin, and bitterness grew in her heart.  Hate consumed her and she spent her entire life cursing everyone she knew until that anger gave her a sort of evil power over those around her.  Is Frog Lady filled with wisdom and love, or is she filled with hate and murderous intent?  Nobody knows.

One Eye 'Fro

A pirates life is never easy, specially when you are getting older.  One Eye 'Fro was once the most respected pirate in his area, but during a raid he was betrayed by his second in command, and during the battle lost an eye and thrown overboard.  By the blessings of the gods, he made it shore, but the defeat changed him inside.  He felt washed up, and slumped into a deep depression, which could only be resolved by a midlife crisis.  He drew his hair out BIG and dyed it two different colors to look hip.  Then he used his treasure he amassed to start a pirate school.  Hopefully, one day he will have a young and skilled crew to revenge his lost eye.

3 Eyes

The mind's eye is a concept describing ones imagination, and the ability to picture and create images within your head that you can not see.  3 Eyes is a mutant whose 3rd eye is truly his minds eye.  It never blinks, never rests.  It is constantly watching, protecting the body from harm.  But this eye, isn't just for sight.  3 Eyes, keeps himself doped up on narcotics, because if he becomes too stimulated, strange things occur.   Hallucinations become real, desires can come true.  It is a dangerous gift, and a burden for 3 Eyes to live with.

Guppy

A fisherman dreamed of mermaids, and mermen living in his lake next to his house.  Even though he had a lovely family and wife, it was his desire and lust to find proof of their existence, for he loved them more than anything else.  On his fishing voyages, he would be away from 3-5 days at a time searching for the mermaids among the lake, leaving his wife home alone.  At dinner and social events he embarrassed his wife by speaking the legends and tales of mermaids and merman to their friends, which they had few.  His wife grew bitter and resentful towards her husband.  And decided it would be better to end this life, than to be a part of a loveless marriage (she had not heard about divorce I guess.)  She cast herself into the water, but before she could take her last breath a handsome Merman rescued her, and began to keep her company and take care of her while her fisherman husband was away.  During a night of weakness she and her merman lover conceived a child.  The child was born a disgrace to the mother and her husband, so she threw it into the water to die.  But the child just swam away and was raised by the Merman and eventually let out into the world of the land walkers, to help the relations between the species.  The neighboring village accepted the young man, and named him Guppy.

Stelle Dog & Sasha Dog

Animal experimentations are cruel but sometimes necessary for the good of mankind.  Unfortunately these experiments were for my own sick pleasure.  My two dogs Stelle and Sasha have been a thorn and a joy in my life for a couple of years.  But, what would happen if you cloned them, and mixed them with human DNA...not to make the perfect species...that is just stupid.  Nah, I am doing just for the hell of it.  Sure the cloning process is extremely painful and causes death in 80% of the animals being cloned, but isn't it worth the loss of animal life to have a human hybrid version of man's best friend?  The experiments were a success and I have 2 man-dogs, unfortunately they are still not house broken.

Ant Man

Mutations and freaks don't just happen to the human species.  While hatching as a larva Ant Man knew he was different from other Ants.  He wasn't a larva really, didn't quite fit in with his brothers.  He grew too fast and was quickly kicked out of the hive for endangering the queen and the entire nest.  He felt ashamed of his appearance, and was depressed that he didn't even have wings to fly away from his misery.  He made his home in a nearby flower garden across from the school.  His antennas allowed him to learn from the teachers at the school, and as continued to grow into the freak he is today, he became educated with a 6th grade education level and a desire to change the world.  He now has become a fully grown man, and uses his vast wealth aquired as a circus freak to fund humanitarian efforts around the world.

Sad Grey

Martians are quite a beautiful species.  Their skin is much like ours with a orange shine to it.  Their hair is usually bright like the flames of a fire.  They are a beautiful people whom believe it or not, walk among us today.  Thousands and perhaps millions of years ago Mars was very similar to Earth in atmosphere and environment.  Unfortunately, due to one of its moons losing orbit and hitting the planet was knocked further away from the sun and began to freeze.  The Martians used all their technology to make a vessel to fly to Earth.  Only 250 Martians survived.  When they arrived.  The fifty elders spoke to the other survivors and told them to blend into the world we know live in, and mate the the native humans.  Only, through mixing of the genes would the Martians be able to survive the earth diseases.  Secretly though the elders were keeping their genes strong and making keeping a pure bloodline.  For Martians are naturally telepathic and if they weakened the abilities of their brothers they believed they could rule the planet.  During the Crusades another great war broke out.  The Martians called it the Mind Wars of Earth.  Several thousands of people died, but in the end, the elders could not take over Earth.  Defeated, they kept to themselves living a traditional Martian life on a remote island.  Sad Grey decided he didn't want this life and moved to New York to become a psychologist.  His mental powers allowed him to literally take the pains away from people, and became wildly successful in life.  But, with each person he healed he lost his color, and took on the pains and worries of this world.  The weight of so much sorrow aged him quickly and he became mentally frail, until one day he lost his telepathic abilities all together.  Now, he is trapped in a constant depression, with literally the sorrow 0f 100s of people on his heart.

The Blanks

The Blank Society is an underground mercenary community.  The claim themselves to be modern day Ninjas using the most advanced medical technology and weaponry to achieve whatever task they are hired to accomplish.  The society is a closed organization which rarely lets new recruits into their fold and when they do the requirements for approval are such that very few make it through the initiation process.  Each Blank has used advanced cosmetic surgery to modify their faces into non distinguishable face.  Furthermore, these enhancements allow the society to change their appearance at will with advanced makeup techniques.  Their noses are designed to be interchangeable with an assortment of prosthetic noses.  Eyes are easily changed with contacts.  And a special chemical formula for hair growth allows The Blanks to grow hair any color and style within weeks.  They use this technique to make eyelashes as well.  Each Blanks Identity has been wiped out of existence and each looks exactly the same.  The only means to know if someone is a Blink is to look for a small scar on their forehead.  This scar holds a small microprocessor with a unique identity for each Blank allowing them to tell each other apart, and communicate silently with one another.  These small microprocessors hold the secrets of the society as no paper or electronic trail exists except for these chips.  They will not function outside the unique brain pattern of each Blank.

Some say another means of telling a Blank from a real human is to study their eyes.  It is for this reason many Blanks choose to wear protective lenses to help hide their identity.

If you happen to come across a Blank, do not engage them.  And keep your distance.  They are not afraid to kill and if they are in our communities, then they are on assignment.

Arachness

Look at the people around you.  The physical body can tell the story of their life.  Have they aged well?  Perhaps those hard cold eyes are because they were in a war.  Look at the hands of a carpenter they are rough and callused.  The physical is the first impression of a person and their soul.  It tells part of the story but not the entire story.  The same is true with Arachness.

This old lady used to be beautiful.  She was an elitist member of society...a perfect trophy wife that any man would love to call his own.  Except, she was a killer...the perfect black widow bride.  She studied the human body, death and murder daily.  She focused on the law and court trials of killers and rapists.  It consumed her until one day the finally believed she could get away with it.  And he killed her first husband after months of planning, in the most brutal and grotesque way.  She was mesmerized by blood and the sight of death, the smell intoxicated her.  After one kill, she was addicted.  Worse, her plan was successful and she was found innocent from the crime.  She began searching for new victims.  She would find a man and seduce them with her body...and lure him to his death.  Death murder was different as she desired to see all faces of death.

The gods noticed her behavior and cursed her.  With each additional kill her body began to change and deform into a hideous human monstrosity.  By this time she didn't care.  Death was all she craved, and luring victims took too much time...she need quickies.  Blood and death to pour into streets before her eyes.

Her sloppiness finally got her caught and arrested.  The papers saw her appearance and nicknamed her Arachness for she had deformed into spider like appearance.  She wasn't convicted as a mass murderer however, because she pleaded insanity and won.  Last we have heard she was locked up in a mental institution being reformed.  Perhaps she will one day be let out into this world again a reformed individual.

Afroogle

A young man born with a perfect voice and an intellect for dialects and languages showed much promise growing up.  By the time he graduated high school he was fluent in 5 languages and capable of blending those languages into the songs he wrote and sang.  He was truly a prodigy and success was practically given to him at birth, except for one fatal flaw, his love for television.

His two favorite shows were American Idol and Star Trek The Original Series (all others were too rosy and not realistic.)  After Enterprise died it was his vision to bring Star Trek back into the mainstream.  His plan was simple, to win American Idol and use his song writing abilities and bring the hearts of Americans and the world back to Star Trek.

He auditioned for Idol and easily won and moved up the ranks.  Success with his voice was easy, so he spent most of his time learning Klingon and other Trek dialects for his song.  His plan was perfect, and running as smooth as possible.  Afroogle decided to take his plan to the next level.  Going to a plastic surgeon Afroogle designed a new Star Trek alien species and turned himself into his own creation.

The big night arose and Afroogle walked on staged to a shocked audience.  His voice melted the hearts of all those around, and even Simon was in tears from the sheer brilliance of its poetry.  Yet, the hideous deformity he turned himself into disgusted the world.  Votes poured in against him, and this once perfect prodigy was rejected, just as his favorite show was rejected.

Afroogle now lives his life as a Bar Tender at Parmount's hotel in Los Vegas.  He works at Quark's Bar and occasionally he is allowed to sing at the lounge.  Most people this failure would bring upon a strong depression...but to Afroogle, he is happy knowing that his voice still brings love to Star Trek, and one day his service will see Trek back on top of the Sci-Fi Food Chain.

Nintendo will be releasing their new video game system, the Wii.  Nintendo's philosophy was to move gaming to a simpler more natural control format instead of spending money on the latest graphics and sound technology.  It is a big gamble, as if the innovative control does not catch on then Nintendo has nothing to compete with the other systems.

Already, each game reviewed for the Wii is getting the extra critical eye.  First, points are being knocked off for graphical and sound requirements not meeting other next generation systems (the Xbox 360 and PS3) and the new control mechanics are not being judged by their own merit of do they work but by the standard do they work BETTER than traditional gaming controls.  The Wii truly has its odds stacked against it in the eye of the gaming audience.

This is why Nintendo must make a huge impact with their first 3 BIG games.  These games must prove that the controls are in fact as good or better than traditional games and Nintendo (despite lesser graphics) is truly moving gaming to the next level.  These 3 BIG games are Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime: Corruption, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Each of of these games uses traditional/standard game design elements for the most popular style games available.  Metroid=first person shooter, Mario=action platformer, Zelda= action, 3rd person adventure.   These games must hit a home run in the control department and prove Nintendo's gamble was the correct decision.

Will it work?  From all reports I have read Zelda truly does succeed in the control department.  Targeting with Arrows is intuitive and FUN.  And from my personal experience it feels more rewarding than ever.

Mario by most reports works great and adds elements that feel like pointer game play, or something you would see in a DS/touch screen game.  Hopefully Nintendo comes up with an interesting means of controlling the camera in these 3D games.

Finally, I have no doubt that Metroid will be the premier first person shooter for the Wii, and possible the entire genre when it is released.

So what is the future for the Wii, control wise?  I think for almost every type of game Wii can create a great control scheme, but it won't take long for the Wii to feel just like the other consoles.  All the Wii 3rd person games will control similarly, and use the same lessons and control tricks from previous games in the genre.  The same will be true for First Person Shooters and Platformers.  The only games that could have problems with controls could be extreme sports (read trick games) and fighting games.  Yet, Nintendo or other developers may be able to find a means around this.

The fact is, Nintendo's destiny is in their own hands.  If they can create the experiences we are dreaming are possible with the Wii, then it will succeed, and show other developers how it is done.  If Nintendo fails then this gaming revolution and motion based controls may be canceled for future consoles.

Nintendo Gaming / Thank Goodness...
« on: November 10, 2006, 04:19:55 AM »
With IGN and GameSpot getting their Wiis and several games today, it means we should be able to have Reviews available by launch.  Or at least impressions that allow us to make good judgment on launch games we want to purchase.

Obviously most people will be purchasing Zelda along with the Wii, but finally questions about Excite Truck, Red Steel, Call of Duty, Super Monkey Ball, Trauma Center, Madden...and more can be answered.

This is great, because I don't remember a launch that occurred where we could actually buy games with reviews available to compare.

This is something I think Nintendo has done RIGHT...and I am curious to see how the games get reviewed, and which games came together the best.

NWR Forums Discord / Biggest Video Game Regret In Your Life
« on: October 13, 2006, 06:00:43 AM »
We all have regrets.  Some are bigger than others, and have huge consequences...we aren't talking about those regrets.  Others are humorous or silly life regrets (we are talking about these) like something you regret involving video games.

So what is your biggest video game regret?

MINE:

When I was younger I liked this girl, and to impress her I brought all my Super Nintendo Games for her younger sister to borrow.  I already had a Nintendo 64 then, and I had visited my Super Nintendo for some time...so I believed I wouldn't miss it.  After leaving the system there I came back home and almost instantly regretted the decision.  I wanted to play so many great games, and I had them not.  Then the girl I was interested in turned out to be a pychobitch and used the hell out me.  So I got outta the relationship, but couldn't get my games back.

I lost probably 15 great games, 2 extra controllers, and a Multitap.

Nintendo Gaming / Mii Shooter
« on: September 15, 2006, 08:08:02 AM »
After seeing the Mii character creator, I must say this concept would be the best concept ever.

The first company that uses the Mii models for characters in a first person shooter of any kind, wins my money.

Imagine being able to create your character and play online.  Guns can float in people hands like Tennis racks do...and the best part is everyone will know who they are.

But the idea becomes bigger than that.  Say you created 25-100 Mii characters on your system.  They can actually pull those characters into the single player game as villians and such.  So walking around you happen to be surprised that the boss of level one is you Mom!!!  OOPS, I guess you should have done your homework.

If Nintendo wanted to do this game, they wouldn't have to make it violent.  It could be backyard war, or Backyard paintball.

Better yet, remember my idea about the FPS in the Nintendo universe, these graphics although simple, would work in a colorful action shooter like that.  And would bring you further into the game.

Who is with me on this one?

Nintendo Gaming / Single Response Wii Launch Opinion Thread
« on: September 14, 2006, 01:47:12 PM »
This is a thread designed to collect all of the PGC readers single thought opinions on the Wii launch information.

The idea is everyone to respond just once to this thread, only giving their thoughts on the information...and not responding to others thoughts.

Then people can come here and get a good vibe on whether people are positively receiving the news or negatively...I think it is a good idea.

I will go first.

This event kinda feels like a sucker punch in the middle of a surprise party.  I am excited about almost everything announced.  The updated games look fantastic, new games look interesting, and I am excited about alot of the games.  The Wii Channels all took me by surprise and it is a great navigation system actually featuring tools I will use (Like Weather and News).  Finally, I love the Mii Channel and all the potential that service has.  First company to make a Mii Character FPSer will become my hero.  Everything is so perfect...or so it seems.

Then comes the Sucker Punch...or Sucker Punches, not enough to ruin the experience, but just enough to really hurt.

1)The Price.  At $249.99 I would hope for just alittle more.  Maybe another controller, I dunno.  I don't think the price is unreasonable at all, but I just don't feel I am getting a great value either.  I feel that I need just alittle more with the entire package.

2)Cost of Accessories.  The Wiipointers we knew were going to be expensive, I think we were all ready for $50.00 with the analog attachment, but to have it be $40 and $20 just seems wierd.  Nintendo has shown the Analog attachment from the beginning and it felt to me like the default option not the other way around.  Throw in the Classic Controller too and you are spending a pretty penny to play full 4 player multiplayer.  It is just sad.

3)Launch games.  I actually go back and forth on this.  I wish Nintendo had a greater presence, but I think saving games for steady releases into next year is important.  And I like that 3rd parties get a chance to shine at launch.  Hopefully 3rd parties appreciate that as well.

Those are my big negatives, and they aren't alot, but they do add up.

The positives far outweigh the negative though.

Finally leaving on a positive note, the Virtual Console just keeps getting stronger and stronger, and the price structure is more than fair for classic Nintendo games.  I will have to buy atleast one classic controller to download and play oldskool games.

So, in the words of Mario:

"Thank you for Playing Nintendo 64...Whose Next?"

Take from the most recent diverse in the "The September edition of Nintendo Power" thread was talk about a new FPS idea for Nintendo.  KDR said that Nintendo really needs to focus on their own Party FPS that focuses on well balanced and enjoyable online play like Halo.  The game should be simple and immediately accessable, something most FPSers have partially achieved.

Here is my idea.

Nintendo Battle Arena:

Players start by chosing one of several pre-modeled characters, or create their own character.  These characters are Anime/toon styled characters that are like regular joes.  When creating your own character specific Nintendo items can placed on your character.  Like an outfit that looks like Links Outfit, or Ash's hat, or Samus's helmet.  Popular Nintendo shirts can also be worn...and if you want you can design your own T-Shirt for the characters.

The weapon of choice in the game, is a Wired Zapper that plugs into battery packs worn on the Belts of each character.  You are limited to holding 4 Battery Packs of ammo.  Different colored Battery Packs give you different attacks via your Zapper.  These attacks are representative of traditional and not so traditional classic FPS weapons, and side scrolling shooting weapons.  Example:  Red battery packs can be used to shoot a spread shot much like Contra.  The blast is a very weak energy shot that desipates quickly.  Blue Battery pack and shoot powerful lasers that bounce.

When neccessary some battery packs will morph the Zapper into special guns like a Rocket Launcher type weapon, or the Super Scope.

Players can also collect generades and mines to lay across the field.  Mines are simple timed, or proximity to keep the game simple and not remote controlled.

Players are digitally transported to battle zones modeled after famous Nintendo franchises (though the main mascots will not appear).  These worlds are alive with traditional enemies from that game world that act like enemy AI attacking you and approaching you as they would the main hero of the series.  So they aren't neccessary horribly dangerous, you do need to know they are around.

The emphasis and spirit of the game is not to allow Nintendo's franchises to fight ala FPS, but to allow the gamer to visit and battle in Nintendo themed worlds.

Stage examples would be:

Mario Ice World:  Fight on an Icy Mountain with a slide for quick traveling down the slope, and giant rolling snowballs to avoid.  Wind Storms may pickup to blow you around and mess up your aiming, but overall a pretty safe battle from enemies.

Mario Plains:  Goombas, Paratroops, and Spinys are all over the place.  Run around and battle in this world that lives and breathes Mario.  Warp Pipes can help you sneak up on enemies.

Metroid:  This lava based level has you carefully jumping about and Metroids are flying about stealing your energy.  Feeding Metroids Grow, and if one becomes giant it may give the captured energy to human player making them super powered.

F-Zero:  Oops Somebody transported us right on the track of Mute City and a race is going on.  This level is highly dangerous because of the one hit kills of the racers zooming by.  Watch the map, and keep away from the drivers as you hunt your prey.

I am sure you can all come up with more ideas.

Also this game will introduce powerups from the worlds you are playing in.  In Mario you can collect Fire Flowers for special generade effects, and Starman for limited invincibility.

F-Zero you can climb into an abandoned F-Zero racer and attempt to run over your prey.

I think this game has huge opportunity to BE the online game to play.  The whimsical nature of the game makes it friendly for all ages and all types of gamers.  The concept of the game allows you to literally go wild with Nintendo themed options and battle possibilities.

Nintendo Gaming / My Crappy Editorial about the Next Generation
« on: May 04, 2006, 07:13:00 AM »
This Next Generation of Gaming is Coming Fast...Are We All Ready?

Last Year, Microsoft started the next generation of gaming systems with the Xbox 360. It tried to jump ahead of the competition and release a year ahead of Sony and Nintendo in hopes to recreate Sony's PS2 success with launching early.

It appeared that Microsoft had made a great choice since they definately have a year head start...but numerous missteps and failures have taken that lead and thrown it away.

Hardware issues have put a huge sour taste in consumers mouth about the new system. Too many recalls, not enough production units created, and the Xbox 360 game library is bad at this point. That is not to say it won't get better, but right now E3 is about to start and the gaming community is going to be all eyes on Play Station 3 and Nintendo Wii. If either system can generate excitement then gamers will be waiting for those to launch and not buy the Xbox 360.  Microsoft is going to need to work overtime this E3 to pull the excitement away from Sony and Nintendo.  They must have AAA titles at the show and playable.  If they don't people may walk away from the Sophomore attempt of Microsofts and never look back.

Last generation was a generation of dual ownership. People could afford to own two systems, because the prices weren't that high. This year, except for Nintendo, the price for a new console is going considerably higher. People are going to think twice about owning two systems...and this is going to hurt the industry.

We all know what Sony and Microsoft are offering us. Basic role reversals. Sony will have the more powerful system and Microsoft will be first out of the gate. Their systems are practically the same. The Wildcard is Nintendo. Technically its power is vastly under that of Sony and Microsoft...yet because of their new controller they are garnering more excitement for their little Wii than Microsoft and Sony are for their systems.

The media come next week are going to be all over reporting about the Wii, because of the difference. If you are Fox News, CNN, or Good Morning America, or whatever television talk/news show are you going to spend your 10 minutes of E3 on Sony and Microsoft doing the same old/same old. Or will you spend that time showing something brand new never before seen. Which is the real story? Although the general market knows nothing about the Wii that will change after next week.

However, this doesn't mean instant success. Nintendo must have a strong launch lineup filled not just with first party games, but third party support as well. And this support must be good. Nintendo must prove that its new controller and its new vision is the BETTER way to play games. It must prove that this new experience isn't novelty but actually enhances and adds to the gaming experience. This will take great software in all genres, that play well and most importantly are fun. And honestly, this is a very uphill battle for Nintendo.

The challenge comes from the fact that Microsoft and Sony both have their support pretty much set. Microsoft is going to see all its games promised last year shown and out this year by Nintendo. Microsoft will finally have its great lineup of games for the Xbox 360. Sony being the market leader this year, and promising a very powerful system also has developers lining up to develop games. Sony has commitments from the biggest Japanese developers and American developers. In fact, Sony just has two things to overcome this generation.

Launching late against Microsoft, and their recent failures with the PSP. The PSP is a great portable media device...yet as a gaming device it sucks. There are more movies out for the system then games...and the number of great games can be counted on a single hand...and most of those games could be played better on your PS2. So what is the point? Sony could be falling in the same trap with the PS3. It is being marketed as a Blue-Ray Gaming system. It will play the new Blu-Ray high defination movies and games...but if Sony focuses too much on movies and not enough on games then they could hurt or destory their market. The wildcard variable is the price. It may be listed as too expensive for the general market. If Sony's PS3 is too costly people may choose the Xbox 360 which may be less...or budget themselves more and go Nintendo Wii for over $100.00 less.

The question is what will gamers take to? What will you take to? Do you want the best graphics available, or do you want to try something brand new? Are you willing to take a risk on an experience you can't have anywhere else? This is what Nintendo is gambling on.

I will take the plunge. I hope you will too.

Come this Fall, the next generation of gaming truly begins.
