Nintendo Gaming / Fils-Aime owns Harrison
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:56:33 PM »

Waiting for the Miyamoto keynote to start, I’m sitting three rows from the front. Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a good natured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

“Kick his ass and take his name!” someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.”

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

LOL! Way to go Reggie!

Looks like Chris Hecker got in some deep sh!t over his Wii is a "Piece of Sh!t" comment.

Quote

Remember Maxis developer Chris Hecker calling the Wii a "piece of sh!t"? He has an apology for you.

"I don't know who has read the internet, yesterday. In a [unintelligible] panel I said a bunch of things. I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top—on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now.

When I'm on stage, I'm me. I'm talking talk from me. From me. I'm not representing EA or Maxis.

I want to make two things perfectly clear.

I do not think the Wii is a piece of sh!t. Nintendo needs to be applauded for trying to interface on the controller front, the user interface front, on making games accessible, on making a console that you don't need to mortgage your house to afford.

Secondly, it's totally obvious—and I'm sorry that I implied otherwise—that everyone at Nintendo is passionate at making great games. Some of the games give me hope that we will be seen as an art form on par with movies and books."

Whether or not he was made to apologize by his bosses isn't clear, but it's a good gesture nonetheless.

I bet EA gave him two options;
Do a public apology or clean out his desk

I have come up with the best way for MS and Nintendo to combat this Home thing

Behold!

With XNA on the Xbox360 and the Wii with its SD Card suport users could make their own items on their computer and then upload them right into the game. Or they could even buid stuff right there. Since Second Life is all done server side there is no need for a HDD.

I want to add a bit to my last post:

It wouldn't surprise me if he's looking for a new job come Monday. Its okay to let the developers comment on the difficulties of developing, but when you have a ass hole like Chris Hecker bitch up a retard storm it not only looks bad on him but the company too.

Sure the Wii doesn't have the graphic power of the PS3 and Xbox360, but it doesn't need it since its not working with HD. A lot of the PS3 and Xbox360 power is lost when it works with HD. The problem we have right now is that 90% of your Wii games are just GameCube ports. The Wii has a lot more graphic power then you all truly know about, and we're just now starting to see a few games be shown off that truly start to use the Wii's power.

Just look at the Xbox360 launch, the games all looked like slightly better Xbox titles. and I bet if it wasn't for the fact that the 360 had been out for a year already your PS3 games wouldn't have looked much better too.

Has anyone looked at a PS3 or Xbox360 on a normal TV, you really don't see a HUGE difference, yes they look better but not a whole lot better then last Gen. Its not till you plug your system into a HDTV that you really see the difference. And like 85% of a America I still don't own a HDTV and I don't plan on getting one till my current TV dies. And thats cause I don't see a need for a HDTV the quality isn't that much better with DVDs and TV only part of HD I like is the wide screen.

Graphics only matter when you have a sh!tty game that can't stand on Story and gameplay alone. If you need graphics to sell your game then thats a sign to me that they game is going to be sh!tty. A sign of a good game is one that can be downgraded and still be a lot of fun to play.

Dead Rising could have been just as fun on the Xbox as it was on the Xbox360, It may have a 1/4 less zombies but it would have been just as fun.
Gears of War could have been done with the Unreal 2 engine and still have been a blast to play. If last gen should have shown us anything its that graphics don't matter. If they did then the PS2 should have been dead last with the Xbox and GameCube taking the #1 and #2 spots and the Dreamcast being #3. Hell even the handheld war has shown us that a superior system doesn't stand a chance to a new and innovating system that has a generation behind graphics.

Did anyone let this asshat know that The Sims and Spore is coming to NINTENDO systems.
I don't think we'll be seeing Mr. Hecker speaking again for a long time... at least not as a memeber of Maxis or EA.

EA must be really pissed at what he said since they are now a huge suporter of Nintendo. This guy is a real idiot, He's about as bad as the retard over at Epic Games.

It wouldn't surprize me if he's looking for a new job come Monday.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamestop observations
« on: March 07, 2007, 08:48:11 AM »
The way my local GameStop is set up is the GameCube, Wii, GBA and DS are all located in the front of the store on the left wall and on half of the back left side wall. The PS2, PS3 and PSP section is the whole Right wall with the PS3 having a section about a quarter the size of the PSP area (The PS3 section is like 5 boxes wide and 6 rows tall). The Xbox takes up the other half of the back left side wall and the whole back wall. The Wii and DS demo units are in the front of the store. The PS3 demo unit is also in front but is hidden by a display rack except for the screen. The GameCube demo unit is right across from the PS2 in the back and the Xbox360 and PC demo unit are in the center of the store.

183
It looks like a updated version of Second Life.

I don't think your going to have a lot of people using it, Its cute but not something the PS3 demographic is going to use. Might hook a few more Japan users but its not going to be a system seller feature.

Also I think one of the nice features with the Xbox Achievements is that you can see them online and you don't need to be on a Xbox to see them. I wonder if Sony is going to do this too?

184
My two cents:

I want to see Sony dead and gone, They deserve nothing less from what they have put Nintendo through.

The PS3 is a OVER priced system that is only on par with the Xbox360. The only thing the Cell chip and Blu-Ray did was make the system over priced. When it comes down to graphics and a good controller the Xbox360 wins hands down. There is a reason why all of Sony's 3rd party system sellers are jumping ship and going multi-console. Mark my words Tekken, MGS4 and FFXIII will all be on the Xbox360.

The whole argument about price is BS. The reason we have the Core Xbox360 is so there is a $300 system which is priced at a point where people feel comfortable buying it, You don't need the $400 system to play Xbox360 games. Hell I bought the Core system myself by choice. I didn't need any of the stuff that came with the Premium so guess what I saved $100 which in turn went to buy some games for it. The only reason people buy the $400 pack is because its pretty much a value pack, they think their getting a good deal so they buy it.

The PS3 doesn't have a model that appeals to anyone except the diehard Sony fanboys. You go in to buy a PS3 and the first one you see is the over priced $600 model You can rarely find the $500 model and there is even talk that Sony is going to ax that model like they just did in the UK. And Hell if you can find a $500 model, for that price you can get a Xbox360 Premium Pack and 2 games!

When anyone goes into a store to pick up a Videogame console they are most likely going to buy a Wii. BUT When its a choice between the Xbox360 and the PS3 they will most likely buy the Xbox360, its $100 to $200 cheaper which speaks VERY loud, they have more games out for it, including many of your former Sony hits . XboxLive is FAR superior to Sony's joke of an online servers. And to top it off Xbox360 games looks better.

Screw the fact that PS3 has Blu-Ray, the next gen DVD war has pretty much fizzled out and nether side won. And truth be told both formats didn't bring anything to the table that is worth upgrading your DVD library too. Plus MS and Apple have the right idea, the future of Movies is downloadable not another disc based media format.

Its GameOver for Sony. Only the Diehard fans will buy it and even then those numbers will start to fade as more and more of Sony's series leave their system. DragonQuest already left who will be next to follow?

There is NO Potential with the PS3, everything it can do the Xbox360 can do and some times even better. The PS3 is an overpriced joke.

Long Live Wii60!

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Is there any way to play import games?
« on: March 04, 2007, 05:20:41 AM »
There is no way right now to play import Wii games. The region stuff is all software based and unless you have access to a Japan install disc there is no way to convert a US system to Japan.

A Mod chip is your best bet, or you could just wait for the US (or Europe) release.

What would be really nice is if Nintendo releases a Wii Channel that lets you play imports. It shouldn't be that hard of a thing to do. I really do wonder why Nintendo didn't do region free with the Wii when you have the DS and GBA which were.

186
MS has used the word "Sold" a few times and they seem to be using it correctly in the sence they have Sold the unit to someone who will actually play it.

Sony tried attacking MS, saying MS uses the same definition as they do for "Shipped" and "Sold". With "Sold" meaning that the units have been Sold to the retailers. But MS came out and said that when they are referring to the system as being "Shipped" they mean the system has been Shipped to Retailers and when they say "Sold" they mean that the system is in the hands of the buyer.

As lean as I have set up my computer, it does have limitations, but it is more responsive than my parents computer which is atleast 5 times more powerful than mine with 4 times the RAM running windows XP.

I still use a 500MHz iMac DV w/ 512MB of RAM, I've got it running OSX 10.4.8 and it runs great. I use it for all my Web releated stuff, Photoshop work and the occasional game of StarCraft.

I also use a 450MHz G4 Tower w/ 1.3GB of RAM at work and it still works great for video editing, photoshop and LightWave work. I even have a few G3 I still use for video and aftereffects.

Macs just last so much longer then PCs.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: MSX and NeoGeo coming to VC in Japan!
« on: February 23, 2007, 03:15:03 AM »
MSX (MicroSoft eX/Cross) was the name of a standardized home computer architecture in the 1980s. It was a Microsoft-led attempt to create unified standards among hardware makers, conceived by one-time Microsoft Japan executive Kazuhiko Nishi. Despite Microsoft's involvement, MSX-based machines were seldom seen in the United States but were hugely popular in other markets.

Japan-Only Games Possible for US Virtual Console
Nintendo is open to the possibility of putting Japan-only classic games on the US Virtual Console, says senior VP George Harrison. I just spoke to him on the phone with some questions about VC, so here you go:

We are aware that there are some very successful Japanese franchises that have a small following in the US, and that they could never be reached by putting these products out at retail. We're open to games released in Japan if we can get them translated properly.

But, Harrison adds, for the time being, Nintendo of America busy enough working through the major games that have already been released in the US.

I'm continuing to speak with company execs about digital delivery; as news breaks I'll report it here first.

To give people an idea about how bad Virtua Fighter 5 did in Japan
First it barely beat out Wii Sports for the #1 spot and Wii Sports has been avalable for 11 Weeks.

Second DoA4 sold better in Japan and there was a smaller Xbox360 user base too.
There are currently 600,000 PS3s owners in Japan only 30,000 picked up Virtua Fighter 5.
When DoA4 came out there were only 80,000 Xbox 360 owners and Dead or Alive 4 Sold 60,000 copies.

196
I called around on Saturday when I saw this and came up with 58 units in my area.

Also funny thing, GameStop.com stopped listing if PS3s are in stock at local stores, When I was first doing my count I went onto gamestop.com and put in my zip to see which stores had them in and all the stores came up with 0, but when I called the stores in my area all of them did in fact have multiple units in.

SNK was talking with Nintendo about bring Neo-Geo games to the VC, thats the last I heard about that and I think that was back during E3 2k6.

I hope we hear something soon, I would love to be able to download King of Fighters or Samurai Shodown.

I find the numbers a bit sketchy, the same story showed up on Digg and alot of people pointed out that it came from a Playstation website, I would like to see the original source if there is one thats not from a Pro-Sony site.

Also I pointed this out on Digg, But the Blu-Ray sales didn't specify it was for Blu-Ray Movies, It just said for Blu-Ray discs, Which is a number that is actually very unfair since HD-DVD is only used for Movies and Storage while Blu-Ray discs are used for Movies, Storage and Games.

I would like to see the figures broken down by each use. I would be willing to bet that the figures are inflated due to Blu-Ray games on the PS3.

That is if DDR Hottest Party uses the GameCube pads. They said that the demo was using them, but in the promo video people were playing on Wireless pads.
We might actually see special made DDR pads for the Wii.
