TalkBack / GameCube Sales Double in February
« on: March 19, 2003, 11:26:47 AM »
Yeah because Gamestop is:
Gamestop, Software Etc., Babbages, or Funcoland.
All four of them count as Gamestops...I got mine at Funcoland even.

Anyway, it would be cool if it went platinum before it was released?
Get with it man, it's been platinum...600,000 in America. It has sold about the same in Japan, maybe a bit more. Either way it definately sold 400,000 in Japan, and simple math would tell you it's sold a million copies by now.

Eternal Darkness sold 250,000 didn't it?..
Oh I totally forgot about Animal Crossing! Of course it sold a million, no doubt about it.

Metroid 2 million? I was being very conservative when i said 900,000, but in truth it should be around 1.2 to 1.4 million in the US...2 million? I know it's been #1 GCN for a while..if that's true then that's great!

EDIT: There is ABSOLUTELY no way Mario Party 4 has outsold SSBM in the US. Absolutely no way at all. 1.9 million in the US? I think that's the worldwide number...no way that it sold 2 million in the US...

Whoops you are right it's just the reg. link cable.

But you are wrong about LAN. IGN Pocket knows far more than you, I'm sorry to say. They've played with this thing, and you haven't. If they say you can play LAN with it, I believe them. Quit thinking you're right

Oh and some of those are my predictions you know. Like I said, correct me if I'm wrong. Of course provide some proof...
The ones that I'm am absolutely sure about are SSBM, Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and Luigi. I'm sure about the others too, mostly, but those are no question...

Well this (sort of old) page shows that IGN says HAL is not first party:
http://games.ign.com/objects/026/026289.html
Next - this is from The Nintendo Database over at Gamespy:
http://www.planetnintendo.com/nindb/dev_hallabs.shtml
Here is a quote from another page on the same site about HAL Labs:
"Originally a 3rd-party developer with 1st-party connections to Nintendo's EAD team, HAL Laboratory has dedicated themselves to Nintendo, despite only a minority ownership of the company. "
Oh, whoops about IntSys, they are owned by Nintendo..but we aren't talking about them..moving on:
As for Silicon Knights, it was all over the news several months back when Nintendo gobbled them up. Of course Nintendo did purchase them before in 2000..that was apparently only partly. You'll have to look up the news.

And as for Sonic Team, a friend of mine who knows a whole lot about sega and nintendo and other such game companies told me Sonic Team is not a part of sega. Of course I thought it was a first party but he insisted that it is seperate. He hasn't been wrong yet, so I don't see why I shouldn't believe him. He's on this board somewhere but i don't know his username. I'll see if I can get a source on Sonic Team from him next time I see him.

And this kid also interviewed Denis Dyack for a school career project (game designer), so I'm sure he knows some stuff about silicon knights. I didn't ask him was Mr. Dyack said about the company, but he did say some stuff about Eternal Darkness. And how...ok i definately won't say I'm sorry...

Oh and I forgot about Mario Party 4! Anyone got the info on that? It's been number 2 in america for a long long time now, and outsold zelda in japan...It's possible that it's a million. Or close.

Another thing about Metroid. It's been #1 in america (NPD just released charts like today or yesterday for February, go look) for GCN since it came out, so I'm sure it's sold 100,000 in 2003 at least like I said. Maybe more.

Nintendo needs to have press releases when games sell a million worldwide. Everyone else seems to shout it the second it may be true.

Numbers? Sigh, fine...I'll try...*goes off to look..

edit: um yeah I'm definately not going to spend 5 hours backtracking through the everywhere I've been in the past month or several. I need to finish master quest...if you want numbers look them up yourself. I didn't guess, many of these are from press reports, IGN, Gamespot, or here. Those are the only places i really go to for news.

One that that is absolutely certain is the very very recent news (press release I think) is that Mario Sunshine has 1.53 million in the US. If you go back to those few IGN Cube charts, they have some (3 or 4 month old) numbers. Of course they can only go up. But a lot of info is from that. Metroid Prime sold about 800,000 in November and December as everyone knows, and it may actually be 1 million in the US now, but I said about 900,000...it at least sold 100,000 in the past 3 months.

Really, if you kept up with the numbers as they were released you'd know where I got them. Many of these numbers are scattered in news archives of several sites from the past few months, and i'm not gonna bother searching. If you want to search here are the sites I go to regularly:
gamers.com
IGNCube
Here
gamepro
gamespot
gamespy
Well happy hunting.

As for SMB, I heard it sold great, but I wasn't sure so I put question marks. Yeah it's probably not a million so scratch that.

Um sorry but where are you getting this info from? You have everything backwards. SK is 100% owned by Nintendo, not partly. Sega does not own Sonic Team and Nintendo doesn't own HAL Labs...go look it up on a credible site, or ask an absolute company fanatic. They'll back me up...

Well Nintendo DOES make the most profits out of any game company you know...For like the past 15 or more years too I believe. Sony and MS don't come close (they are like #3 and #7)...EA is #2, if anyone cares...

Okay back to the topic.

Didn't I say don't try making up rules? You say HAL is a first party, and a first party is a company owned 100% by Nintendo. Well HAL not owned 100% by Nintendo, they are and have been an independent company (even though they are located inside a Nintendo building). Intelligent Systems is also a seperate company (they are NOT R&D1, as many people think...they are formed from members of R&D1 who left).
And how many times do I have to say this, Silicon Knights is 100% owned by Nintendo. Not partially owned like Rare.

As for Retro, hahahahah! Own visions and leaders? Retro was nothing without Nintendo. Nintendo stepped in very very early in it's lifecycle, built them a studio using Nintendo cash, fired most of the original Retro people, and put new people in. Retro had no vision before Nintendo, except maybe vague plans. Have you ever heard of a Retro game not on GCN? All of Retro's original staff were comprised of veteran PC FPS developers. Yet even before Nintendo swallowed up Retro, they announced 5 GCN only games. Why would PC designers want to make 5 new games for GCN. And the only "FPS" was an unnamed Metroid game. If I'm not being clear on something go read up some history.

Well anyway, if you think that any company 100% owned by Nintendo is a first party, then Silicon Knights fits right in.
And another thing, I'm sure everyone agrees Sonic Team is a SEGA first party, right? Then explain to me why Sega does not own Sonic Team...

Like I said, you cannot make rules for what is a first party and what is not. The safest way is to just look at the companies relationship with Nintendo/MS/Sony and their history with it. All companies operate differently. Businesses don't all work the same. Different contracts have different requirements for companies. And besides, it's only logical that a 2nd party, not being part of a parent company, could leave when it wanted. Silicon Knights could never leave Nintendo if Nintendo didn't want them too. So how are they "someone else", as the term second party would apply? Of course, they may have some secret expiration date tagged on, but I doubt it.

And doesn't Denis Dyack come to these forums? Why not ask him and settle it. What does he think SK is?..

Okay. So what are the GCN world wide million sellers by now? As far as I figure, they are...

Super Smash Bros. Melee - almost 2 million in US, almost 1.5 million in Japan, and not sure about Europe...
Super Mario Sunshine - 1.5 million in US, at least a million in Japan and Europe combined.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 600,000 in US, somewhere around 700,000 to 900,000 I believe in Japan...
Luigi's Mansion - not sure of the numbers, but it's around 1.2 to 1.5 million i think worldwide.
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle - over a million in the US alone, not sure about the others
Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 - should be a million worldwide
Pikmin - same here
Star Fox Adventures - definately a million worldwide by now
Resident Evil - same
Resident Evil 0?? - I believe it's a million worldwide, might be a little less though...
Metroid Prime - like almost 900,000 here I think, and Japan has like 70,000, I'm not sure if it's out in Europe...In any case it should be a million by now or very soon...
Super Monkey Ball?? - possibly..someone fill me in

Am I leaving out anything? And how long till Zelda (about 1.3 to 1.5 million) beats Melee (like close to four million)?

These are worldwide of course in US it's just SSBM, Sonic, and Mario. In Japan it's just SSBM...

Well WE got a seperate full fledged boxed edition with instruction manual and all in America! So HA!

Oh well, it's okay Australia...Zelda's already a million seller without your help....and so is Metroid by now. Of course that's adding up worldwide sales.

How many times do I have to tell you people, Sonic Team is not part of Sega! They are an independent company, just like HAL Labs. Of course, I'm sure the Sonic liscense is held by Sega, but no one can stop Sonic Team from joining Nintendo. Besides, didn't they say they would leave Sega if they had to develop for Xbox (except for Phantasy Star Online)?..

I thought everyone knew about LAN through gameboy players by now?...
Anyway, there are two ways to play multiplayer through the GB Player.

1: you need 1 GCN, 1 GB Player, 1 TV, and players 2 - 4 need their own GCN/GBA link cables, GBA's, and I THINK their own cartridges...(GCN is more than powerful to power it all though...). And why not split screen 4 player...sometimes you gotta wonder what Nintendo's doing..
2: You need multiple gcn's each with GB players, multiple TV's...and that's it.

Go over to IGN Cube and search the mailbag. There's a fairly recent one asking about GBA LAN play. And the answer was gotten from Craig of IGN pocket, so i'm sure it's all true..

Nintendo Gaming / Wind Waker Demo Impressions
« on: March 17, 2003, 02:55:59 PM »
If you notice some of the puzzles were already one. Like the blocks in the dungeon level and stuff. That demo was simplified so you could just jump in, fight some enemies, fight a boss, sneak around, etc. and leave. The actual game of course won't be like that. The demo only really shows you the controls..

Nintendo Gaming / Whaaaaaaaat?
« on: March 17, 2003, 02:46:05 PM »
Well the ESRB is much more strict nowadays. If SSBM got a T...(and Star fox), then Ocarina of Time sure as heck would have at least gotten a T. So either they weren't as strict back then, which is true, they didn't play the game enough, which may be true, or all of the above...

They should have re-rated Master Quest. I'm sure the bonus disc would get a T. That game is far darker than SFA and Smash Bros. combined. Getting a T wouldn't hurt young people, as it comes with a "cartoony" game and anyone can buy a T rated game anyway. And it certainly would help make the zelda series seem more "mature" for xbox naysayers...Really, that's all some people understand. If they would just turn the box over and see "Teen - Blood, Violence" instead of "Everyone - Violence" (zelda never gets "mild" for some reason...I guess ESRB at least noticed it was more violent than SFA and smash bros...sort of) I'm sure we'd have less people thinking zelda is for kids.

You know..as fluid as the animations are...some look way too wacky to be motion captured. (i'm talking about the fighters). I'm not saying they were hand animated...but look at how some of them move...
Of course if it is hand animated...they did a lot better than some of the stuff SK did in Eternal Darkness. It had great animation, but a few goofs here and there. Like the opening cutscene with the detective. Look at how they move...totally unrealistic..

Nintendo Gaming / Online Game Boy Advance games via your Gamecube
« on: March 17, 2003, 02:29:21 PM »
Why hasn't anyone thought of this?

Broadband Adapter + Game Boy Player + simple GBA games easily coded for online matchmaking = online GBA games

No more searching around for people with all the stuff you need just to play four swords or mario kart. That really really hurts, and if you can have LAN multiplayer player through the gameboy player why not take it the next level and get online?

And this would also speed up sales for GCN, appeasing our penny-picking friends at Nintendo. Not to mention give online a boost, convincing Nintendo to take action with online GCN...

923
Nintendo Gaming / No Super Ghouls and Ghosts????
« on: March 17, 2003, 02:24:42 PM »
Don't we already have an MMORPG...
I don't give a crap about this game. I'd rather see Mario Kart online, Smash bros. online, some online car combat game (cough the one Retro Studios was working on cough), online Gamecube wars, heck even online sports titles. But really, we have one MMORPG. Then we'll get this. Then there will be another Phantasy Star. Maybe pokemon (that would actually be cool)..

Anyway, I'm not actually bashing mmorpg's as it may seem...it's just this game idea was lame and I'd rather see something else anyway...

Can anyone say
broadband adaptor + game boy player and/or gcn/gba link cable = online Mario Kart Super Circuit? well not super circuit but upcoming games...

I mean it would be so easy...GBA games are nothing compared to complex gcn games. No more searching for other people with link cables and gba's and cartridges....Can you imaging getting home from school, firing up your setup, and jump right into four swords?

924
Um...Mario Tennis really rocks. So ignoring the point of this topic, I'd have to say Mario Basketball would be sweet as long as they didn't screw it up.

Yeah yeah I know what you're saying stop with the mario but I'd rather play a good game now then wait 10 years for Nintendo do "grow up" or whatever you call it.

And why isn't Silicon Knight's 1st party? Just like Retro, Nintendo owns 100% of them. And Denis Dyack constantly refers to Silicon Knights and Nintendo as the "same team" and such. Go read some interviews. He is constantly talking about how they are a part of Nintendo. As far as I can see, SK is closer to Nintendo that Retro is...of course we don't have nearly as many Retro interviews...

So anyway, SK sounds as 1st party to me. Heck, Nintendo even owns them. Nintendo doesn't even own HAL Labs, and they are considered first party. Silicon Knights isn't going anywhere either, as Denis also stated. All their projects are and will be for GCN. Just go read some interviews. This site has mp3's from GDC, IGN has a seperate interview up from GDC, and their are many earlier ones..

As far as I can tell, the following can be considered "first party". Don't bring your technicalities and whatnot into this, there is no way they will work. You can't set up rules for what's 1st party and what's not. There are too many little weird things, like HAL labs being in a Nintendo building but still an independent company.
So they are:
EAD, Intelligent Systems, HAL Labs, Silicon Knights, NST, and Retro Studios.
These are the ones that aren't going anywhere anytime soon (or ever). They are "part of the team" if you will.

Now things like Rare...Nintendo only owned a minority stake in the company, and Rare was already a company with it's own vision and leaders before Nintendo stepped in. All of the above companies have been with Nintendo from start to now, except for Silicon Knights. But they seem to be in love with Nintendo and I don't think they will leave. Oh and of course Nintendo owns them. On IGN Denis Dyack said all of their previous games would have been better with Nintendo. It's not like Nintendo just bought them and said, ok we give the dough you make the blockbusters. They all contribute...

So anyway...
