General Gaming / I created a Skylander!
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:53:41 PM »
So... I created a Skylander.

Seriously.

It's a Walmart exclusive 'red' Drill Sergeant.  Started arriving in store yesterday on the West Coast.

Go buy them.  :)

Honestly, I don't know exactly how much I had to do with it, but I've been talking with a guy at Home Office about Skylanders since Janurary or so.  Back in Feburary, we were discussing the Skylanders market place and I suggested another Walmart exclusive (I believe this was when Blue Bash was shown as a TRU exclusive)... One of my two suggestions was a "Red/Glittery Drill Sergeant"...  I got an email back today saying he's "my" figure...  so go buy him and support my first official actual contribution to the video game industry. ;)

NWR Feedback / Scammy Takeover Ads...
« on: June 09, 2012, 01:23:35 PM »
I don't know what's up with the new ads, but I was browsing on my phone and opened a thread here on the forums.  Next thing I know, I had a new tab open that took over my browser proclaiming I had three viri found and to "Click here" to install the removal software.  Super not cool.  Had to force close the browser to get out of it.

NWR Feedback / Special Request: Last minute live podcast!
« on: June 03, 2012, 01:18:09 PM »
I know it's hard to do, but I think NWR should throw together a special, last minute, live streaming podcast as a follow-up to the Nintendo Direct.  You can discuss the Nintendo Direct, upcoming E3 stuff, take calls, etc.

DO IT. :D

Nintendo Gaming / Pre-E3 Ninendo Direct tomorrow...

They settin' up the bomb.

We are kicking off #E3 with a special #NintendoDirect on Sunday 6/3 at 3 pm PT/6 pm ET. http://on.fb.me/KYtWD2

The #NintendoDirect focuses on the concept behind #WiiU. Streaming Sun 6/3 at 3 pm PT/6 pm ET & follow #NintendoDirect http://on.fb.me/KYtWD2

Remember when Nintendo said they wasn't going to reveal the price/date for Wii U at E3?  What about BEFORE E3?!?!?  (Yeah, not likely...)

In this thread, you get to post four things:

1.) A Prediction: Something you think will happen for sure.  Obviously, this could be something like "Nintendo shows off the Wii U" - but that would be lame.  :D

2) A Hope: Something you would like to see happen and actually stands a chance.  Like a Metroid/Star Fox crossover.

3) A Dream: Something you want to see happen, but on a scale of 1-10, 1 being "Nintendo Shows off the Wii U", we're talking a 9-10.  Like Mario Kart GP as a Nintendo Selects title. :D

4) Not gonna happen.  Something batshit crazy that you still want to see happen but there's virtually no way in hell it'll happen.  Like Nintendo renaming the "Wii U" the "Super Wii".  (*Note, that isn't one of my, personal, 'want to happens')...

So:
1) Prediction: Nintendo will show off the new Kirby Collection and it'll be pretty sweet - but there will be a lot of complaints that there's not enough on it.
2) Hope: Wii U has enough internal memory or a realistic memory solution to not have any of the memory pitfalls we had with the Wii or seen on the 3DS.
3) Dream: Mario Bros. Classic (4-Player GBA remake from the Advance series) gets announced as a DSiWare or eShop title similar to 4 Swords.  With an on-line mode.
4) Not gonna happen: 3DS Ambassadors get a mail-in rebate on Wii U if they buy in the launch week. :D

So - this topic comes up every so often... and it has surfaced again.

I'm a fan of the touch screen for gaming.  I was before the DS came out - I would play those MEGATouch machines you see in bars/pizza places and I knew then that touch screen gaming would be awesome.

That isn't to say that there hasn't been a lot of missteps in the world of touch screen gaming.  Super Mario 64 DS comes to mind.

But there have been a large number of games that have greatly benefited from the ability to use the touch screen.  I'd like to throw out a few, then, I'd like y'all to mention some of your favorites.

In no particular order:

Brain Age 1 & 2 - I can't imagine trying to play these without the quick strokes of a pen to answer questions.

CrossworDS - I'm sure there are a few other Crossword puzzle games on the DS, but this is the only one I've played.  I LOVE being able to just write the words... I couldn't stand such a game if I had to select letters on a fake keyboard or such.

Planet Puzzle League/Puzzle Quest - Possible with a cursor?  Sure.  Not nearly as fun though.

Professor Layton - So many of these puzzles just wouldn't be possible without a touch screen.

Trace Memory/Hotel Dusk/Last Window - After replaying Uninvited on the NES recently, I really, really am thankful for the touch screen interface for point-and-click type adventures.  Heck, even Another Code R isn't as enjoyable using the Wii Remote vs. the touch screen.

Elite Beat Agents - Best rhythm game ever.  Don't tell me touch screen gaming is useless.

General Gaming / Learn to ship, you jerks.
« on: May 05, 2012, 03:46:20 PM »
So... Skylanders is big, right now... right?

Many people are playing the game, but many people are collecting the toys.  Like me.

Not once, not twice, but three times now, I've dealt with the EXACT SAME shipping issue from THREE different sellers.  One of these sellers is a MAJOR NATIONWIDE CHAIN STORE - and just happens to be the same major chain that is the FLAGSHIP RETAILER for the Skylanders brand.

First, someone on CAG mentioned that they had a broken Cynder - her wing was broken off in the package.  They had picked it up when it was the only one they could find.  He had since found another was was willing to let this one go for cost+shipping.  I mentioned that it would go well with my broken Hex, showed a picture (of her clearly still in the package) and paid for it.

The second, I ordered one of the Blue Bash figures from Toys R Us's website.  They sold these as limited, collectable, exclusive figures.

The third, I bought a Blister-packed Dark Spyro from someone on eBay.  Paid 20 GBP for shipping (they paid 2.30 GBP for postage).  I spoke with the seller in advance (as I was trying to get a second one) and clearly indicated that I was wanting one in the package for collector's purposes and that I already had the figure from the 3DS Starter Pack.

In each of these cases, the seller shipped the figure out to me in a BUBBLE MAILER.  The Dark Spyro guy sent his out INTERNATIONAL in a BUBBLE MAILER.

Seriously, what is wrong with these people?  Even if I were opening the figures up, I'd still like for them to not arrive crushed.

Now, I gotta try to find me another Dark Spyro in a blister package.  Not too worried about the Cynder, it was more of a chuckle than anything.  Still ticked about the Blue Bash - TRU refunded my shipping, but told me I was SOL at getting them to send another. :(

General Chat / 2012.

I seriously think we may be approaching the end of humanity as we know it.

There are currently two videos making their rounds on Youtube.  They're 'music' videos.  I use the term 'music' very generously.  It's kinda like calling a triple rape/homicide an assault.

Now, because I have sympathy for my fellow forum goers, I'm not going to even link to the two videos.  In fact, if anyone links to one of the two videos, I'm going to give you a three day ban. :D

Seriously, I had to watch Friday to get these horrible images out of my head.

Why would anyone do this?  Maybe it's terrorists.

General Gaming / Skylanders and the Birdmen.
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:02:19 AM »
I was tempted to post a new reply to this thread, but it's over two years old now, so I'll just start another thread.  Besides, we don't have nearly enough threads for how awesome Skylanders is.

So, if you've avoided anything gaming for the past six months, I'll quickly sum it up for you - Skylanders is awesome and has sold some pretty amazing numbers.  I'm talking crazy numbers.  Basically, Activision hit the big jackpot at all three casinos and won the Powerball.

But, you'll notice, Activision has been rather quiet about their Skylanders success.  Sure, there's an occasional mention of it - but you know how they trumpet their Call of Duty sales every so often?  Skylanders doesn't tend to get that much of a mention, even though the numbers it's giving Activision is beyond what CoD pushes.

Anyway - As we've seen recently in the trailer proof of concept Rayman video - other companies are looking at this.  They've seen the success and they smell the money in the water.

The question, however, is will they be able to replicate the success of Skylanders or will they music gener'd drive the concept into the ground?

I keep seeing talk, here and elsewhere, about Smash Bros. or Pokémon making use of the concept.  Sure.  We know Nintendo isn't going to screw this up too horribly.

But who else is going to try their hand at it?  Do they understand that the games (well, not so much the web games) are actually fun?  or do they think "hey, people like games and toys... we can do this" and plan to release complete crap with $15 crap add-ons?

Should be an interesting E3, no?

Nintendo Gaming / Dear Nintendo: 3DS Virtual Console Multi-player
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:32:32 AM »
Dearest Nintendo:

Oh, why do you tease me so?

You know, I get that you don't include on-line multi-player because you want to keep VC releases as "original" as possible.  I disagree with that decision, but, whatever.

However, if you're wanting to keep the VC releases as "original" as possible, why do we not have any local multi-player in our 3DS downloads?  I strongly and clearly remember having multi-player in my original Game Boy games.  I remember sitting on the bus, playing Tetris against friends.

Some Game Boy games even have some pretty spiffy multi-player modes on them - like Pac-Man, which has a killer 2Player mode.  I have ZERO intention of buying this game (do you know how many versions of Pac-Man I have?), but it would be an instant download for me and anyone I know with a 3DS *just* so I could make them play the multi-player mode if we happen to have time (oh, and how awesome is it that I wouldn't have to worry about the link cable?).

I'm not asking for on-line support.  Even though I'd love it and even though third-rate emulators have been doing it for years.  I'm simply asking for local multi-player - so that we can play our games the way we used to play them.

Updates:
03/26/2012 - As this is a "Trading Thread", your "Haves" section should list cards you have to trade.  Additionally, you can have a section called "My Collection" to show off your personal collection of cards - not for trade - that might help guide people into helping decide what to offer you in trade for what they want.
READ THIS POST FIRST.
So... you want to collect all of the Kid Icarus: Uprising trading cards?  Well, Nintendo hasn't made it easy for you, that's for sure.

I've gotten permission from the kind folks at NWR to try something new - a Buy/Sell/Trade thread for the Kid Icarus: Uprising trading cards.

This, of course, comes with the big disclaimer:
Buying, Selling, and/or Trading is done AT YOUR OWN RISK.  NWR will not be held responsible and will not mediate or get involved - outside of participating with any official requests from law enforcement agencies - with any individual trades.

A few ground rules will be in play:

This thread will be for you to post your individual buy/sell/trade list - and your list only.  Do not make or respond to offers in this thread and do not start conversations in this thread.

Each member is allowed a single post in this thread.  Use this thread to list anything related to Kid Icarus card haves and wants.  When your haves/wants change (i.e.: you get or trade/sell cards), you are expected to go back and edit your original post to keep it up to date.  Also in this post you can leave a list of names of other forum members you've successfully traded with - this will help provide a type of "feedback".  Finally, you can include up to two links to your feedback pages on services like eBay or such.  Your want/have list, list of NWR trades and your feedback links are the ONLY THINGS to be posted in this thread.  Ever.  There will be little tolerance for breaking this rule.

Any posts that are over 30 days old without being edited will be deleted.  If you wish to keep your post active, but haven't needed to make any changes to your list, just edit the post in any way so the "Edited on" date will update.

There will be no "placeholder" posts.  Your individual trade list must remain active with wants or haves or it will be deleted.

If your post is deleted due to exceeding the time limit, you are allowed to make a new post in the thread or contact me to have your original post returned to the thread.  If your post is deleted due to not having active items listed, you must simply make a new post once you have cards to buy/sell/trade.

If you wish to make a deal with another member, send them a PM - DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD.  Also, if you choose to participate in this thread, make sure to turn your PMs on. :D

For general discussion, please use this thread.

About PayPal - if you're buying cards using PayPal you CANNOT send the payment as a personal (gift) transaction - you MUST send it as payment for goods/services.  Not only is this against the rules of your agreement with PayPal, it's a bad idea because PayPal will NOT provide any kind of help for "deals gone bad" if the payment was made as a gift.  You cannot offer to send payment this way and you cannot ask for it.

Who sends first?  That's between you and the person you're trading with.  Or you can both send at the same time.  That's up to you to decide.  A good rule of thumb is for whomever has the lesser feedback to send first - but this is merely a suggestion.

These rules are subject to change at any time and at my discretion or the discretion of the NWR Staff

See my post below for a sample of how to format your own post.  It doesn't have to be exactly like mine, but remember - your post should only contain your haves, wants and references.

166
This is the chat thread for the Kid Icarus: Uprising trading thread.

Do not post your haves/wants in this thread.  Please use the Trading Thread for this.

Do not make deals in this thread.  Please send PMs to do this.  Also, make sure you have your PMs turned on.

If you have any questions, please pose them in this thread.

I know we have a couple of regulars that hail from the icy area known as "America's Hat".  I need one of you to help me out, if you'd be so kind.

I want to place an order from EBGames.ca, but they only ship to Canadian addresses.  Would anyone be so awesome as to let me ship it to their place, then re-ship it to me?  I'll shoot you a few buck via PayPal for your troubles.

Nintendo Gaming / Crush 3D
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:49:04 AM »
So.. this game had been getting some hype.  Played the demo and enjoyed it...  bit the bullet and went to GameStop (where it's an exclusive release to) and purchased it.  Guh.

Anyway - so far, $20 well spent.  Fun puzzle game.  So, it's a 3DS game, new release, GameStop exclusive with a Club Nintendo code and a playable demo to download on the 3DS - all at a budget price of $20.

What more could you ask for (aside from not being GS exclusive?)

Nintendo Gaming / Dear Nintendo: 3DS Demo Play Limit idea
« on: March 17, 2012, 07:08:00 PM »
In the latest in my series of forum posts where I pretend someone from Nintendo A) Visits the forum B) Has any real influence on anything and C) Cares what I have to say...

Dear Nintendo,

In theory, I don't mind the limit on 3DS Demo plays.  Not really a huge deal - however, I'd like to suggest a minor tweak - how about, whenever I play the game that the demo is for (for example, let's say I put the cart version of Resident Evil in), the play counter will reset?

Sure, there's a minor potential for abuse, but the ability to show off games to friends/family without fear of running out of demo plays far outweighs the risk of the possibilities of abuse from this method.

So, there's my idea.  It's yours, for free.  But you can mail me a bunch of Kid Icarus cards, if you'd like.

General Chat / So... The Hunger Games...
« on: March 14, 2012, 03:23:27 AM »
After seeing previews for the movie and thinking it looked decent, I looked up info on it - thought it actually sounded pretty good.

So, I figured, I'd pick up the books and give 'em a read.  I don't read as often as I should or as I'd like - I grabbed the first and third book (we were out of stock on the second)... while I was checking out, a co-worker said - as if he was warning me - that he'd heard The Hunger Games was "the new Twilight".

Now, to be fair, I've never read a Twilight book, nor seen a Twilight movie, so I don't really have much to compare them to... but, I started reading the first book late Friday night.  In spite of several aspects of my life getting in the way (having to go out of town to get the dogs groomed on Saturday, which was a good thing, as it allowed me to pick up the second book, having to go out of town again on Sunday and spend most of the day with my wife, then having to work Monday and Tuesday), I just finished the third and final book tonight.

Good books.

Curious if anyone else here has read them.

So...I've got a closet in my game room.  It had some shelves in it, but it wasn't quite what I wanted...  So, I've been working on something this weekend...

First, I had to pull everything out of my closet...

Then, I bought about $150 worth of supplies and went at it.  I'm not quite done, as they didn't have enough brackets... so my closet is three sets of shelves short (which means I'm still using an old set of shelves I've been using until I get the brackets I need...), but...

Is there someone who can have this done for me tonight?

General Chat / In the event of an emergency...
« on: February 29, 2012, 10:35:09 PM »
So... for those who don't know, we had a pretty nasty line of storms move through my area this morning.

My little town is just fine, but about 45 mins away, the town of Harrisburg, IL was hit by an F4 Tornado.  It's pretty nasty.

I was called in to go over there as the store had some pretty major damage.

During my time there, I gathered these useful tips.
In the event of a major emergency, it's important to keep a few things in mind. First, make sure you get in your vehicle and drive all around the effected area. Don't worry about emergency personnel and stuff... you and the multiple people like you that want to sight-see surely won't get in their way. Also, be sure to call 911, often and plenty. I mean, sure, they might have someone trying to call in with an actual emergency... but the odds of that have got to be so small that a few hundred people calling to ask when the power or cable will be back on probably won't even effect that one or two emergency calls. Finally, mega retailers will be open, so drive there. It doesn't matter if half the store is gone - they'll still be open. If the employees are telling you the store is closed, they're lying... they're just poor at customer service and don't want to have to help you. Go in anyway - just step over the broken glass and scattered merchandise. Oh, and if you're a politician, be sure to get to the area ASAP so you can get your photo ops in while there's still huge amounts of damage. You can go back to pretending that Chicago is the only part that's really Illinois tomorrow.
