Isn't Pac-Man just a snowman in ToS, though?  Or am I wrong?

When I do the "Six Degrees Of Super Mario" game I don't count it unless they're actually there in person; though I also allow for different incarnations of the same person (eg. Link, Predator).

Six Degrees Of Super Mario (variation of "Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon"):

Pac-Man has been in Pac-Man Fever with Astaroth.
Astaroth has been in Soul Calibur II with Link.
Link has been in Super Smash Bros. (and SSBM and SMRPG and Tetris (NES)) with Mario.

Ha!  Three degrees!

Thanks to several comic book/video game/etc. crossovers, you'd be surprised at how many characters are in the same multiverse as Mario.  Pac-Man is just closer than he was before, if you don't count Pac-Man Vs.  (Lara Croft, Optimus Prime, Batman, and several other characters are also in the same multiverse as Super Mario if you think about it.)

Besides, Pac-Man is a cartoony character, and a major classic game character.  It's inevitable that they should meet.  If you don't like it, don't play him.

Though I wonder what features you'd be able to add on your picture if you chose Pac-Man.  It's not like there's much to Pac-Man, unless they make your face yellow or put his arms coming out of your ears.  o_0

I'm guessing that Mario Kart appeals to both guys and girls, and a larger age range, with characters more recognizable to casual gamers than F-Zero.  (It's also not nearly as difficult.)  Just a few reasons why arcades that passed on F-Zero AX should still take a look at this.

It should be more likely to show up in arcades, though by how much is anybody's guess.  I never saw an F-Zero AX machine at all around here...  :/

Yeah, my bad.  My friend linked me to that pic and I figured I'd stumbled upon something that was already out.  I guess by "out" he meant revealed to the public, not "out" as in already in arcades.  Though what are the chances of seeing this?  I never saw an F-Zero AX game in the city.  I'm not a huge arcade person (I used to work at Playdium Edmonton, though) but my friends who are bigger arcade fans have never seen any around here.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if this patent may just be for the sometimes rumored successor to the Game Boy Advance.  I'd guess that this successor would come next year, and there has been talk about a device that could play GAMECUBE or GAMECUBE-like games.  PCGP would fit along the lines of a 'Portable' / 'GameCube' 'Player'...  Just something to think about.  Nonetheless it shall be interesting to see.

It's PCGP, isn't it?  Not PGCP?

Are PSP discs the same size as GCN discs?  Or at least about that?  It makes sense; the GBC seemed like a portable NES, the GBA seems like a portable Super NES, the DS seems like a portable N64.  A new handheld beyond the current GBA/DS, if following the console-mirroring trend, could be like a portable GCN.  If the PSP is essentially a portable PS2, and small discs in a handheld are feasible without an uber-huge hit on battery life, then the next handheld could have the advantage of backwards-compatibility with GCN games without having to wait for developers to port them over.  Minus some features, like multiplayer, but that's like playing GBA games on the DS, same loss.  I guess with the PS2 backwards compatiblity with the PSX, and assumedly every PS(?) compatible with games from all previous PlayStations, Nintendo will want backwards compatibility where they can get it.  But the new handheld, if able to play GameCube games, would have to come out before the GameCube is obsolete for too long, and it also can't come too soon, or people will be confused about whether to buy a GBA, DS, or this new thing...

If we're flying with that idea, then V-Pocket sounds like a handheld too, what with "Pocket" in its name (though the Play-Yan is a great fit)...  But Reggie says they're going to stick with the DS for a while, not that they probably aren't already developing a new handheld, so I don't think a new handheld will (or at least should) come to the market too soon.

Could anyone explain to me why this is? I could see making your own tables with the touch screen fun, but it would be little more than a cool gimmick. It has no potential for wireless multiplayer or using the mocriophone. Having the ball move from screen to screen will be a hindrance. Pinball control has already been emulated perfectly with three buttons, what can the DS add to this?

Most notable is probably the two screens.  The whole table can be shown with little or no movement, and without looking weirdly angled like Mario Pinball Land.  No other system can do that without wasted space or a squashed table.  Sure, the NGage has a vertical screen, but ehhh, it's the NGage...

The other things that the DS has (stylus/touch screen, microphone, wirelessness) probably won't be utilised, that's true...  >_<  Though the DS is the most powerful (Nintendo) handheld, so maybe there'd be impressive 3D graphics now.  I'm guessing that pinball games on consoles have never done as well as on handhelds.  I don't even recall very many console pinball games since the 3D era began...

I liked PinBot on the NES.  Don't remember why, though.

I'm sure you guys noticed that the second "P" looks different.  I compared it to the "P" in "Pokémon" and it's not quite the same.  It's slanted and has the top part extending past the side but it isn't as similar everywhere else.  Though I suppose if it did have something to do with Pokémon, that would make it too obvious, that is, if it was meant to be an obvious tease, rather than just the patent office going, "oh, look at these."

I was also thinking "PC", what with DSes being able to communicate with PCs.  Though Nintendo products tend to be in their own world (you pretty much have to go to third parties for DexDrives and USB Memory Cards) maybe they're going to take advantage of the fact that nearly everyone has a PC, so long as such devices are more beneficial to game play and don't open things up to piracy.

As mentioned, it DOES look like something they'd throw on many boxes as a logo of a feature.  If it was a plain old game you'd expect that the letters would be more meaningful if you're just going to refer to it by that.  People call games "SMB 3", "SSBM", "Pokémon R/S", but it's not like they're their official names or anything.

"V-Pocket"...now unlike "P", "C", or "G", the letter "V" doesn't exactly have a whole lot going for it.  "Video" seems to be the obvious choice (which is also related to video gaming like the "P", "C", and "G" words I mentioned earlier).  Visual?  Visceral?  Vivid?  Unless it's a made-up word, sort of like "Viewtiful".

I guess we'll find out in May or at least this year.

Kirby's in a pinball game.
The Pokémon are in two pinball games.
Mario's in a pinball game.

Looks like they felt it was time for someone else, especially someone like Samus, who can actually turn into a ball, unlike Mario (WTF), to get into a pinball machine.  Sure, the world of Super Mario may be all happy and colourful and cheery and magical where something like this is more acceptable, but is it really blasphemy for Samus to try this out?

Sure, when I first read the header, I was like, what's the deal with this?  "Metroid pinball?  How wrong!"  I'm a Metroid fan myself.  But I think the problem is that so many fans of Nintendo are sort of niche-fans, not quite cult fans but they're not exactly the largest group out there any more.  And, as I've seen with things like the Neo-Geo, the more of a niche you are a fan of, the more you treasure it as it is.  Fans of Metroid have always thought of the games as following a continuity, so the first time Samus gets a spin-off game it's an outrage, apparently.  I remember people spazzing about Metroid going into 3D before Prime actually came out.

I'm sure the first impression of this game is going to be "WTF", but I'm guessing not many people are actually going to be fretting over it until the game comes out.  And if it's a good game, what's the problem?  Simply accept it as not part of the continuity, a little quirk, but if it's fun, then enjoy playing it.

I mean, look at Super Smash Bros. Melee.  Some crossovers make sense.  Several ones, especially the big ones, don't make sense.  Apparently no one seems to mind the fact that Samus is trading blows with Pikachu, but her being a ball like she already does in several Morph Ball puzzles is somehow weird.

PCGP?  The mystery is that a lot of things to do with gaming begin with those letters.
Cards?  Cartridges?  Cordless?  Combat?  Controllers?
Gamers?  Games?  Gaming?  Glove?  Go?
Party?  PC?  Play?  Players?  Playing?  Plug?  Press?  Pokémon?  Power?

I actually read about this on IGN's Xbox page, because I saw a link from the main page.  It has an X, sure, but I was surprised that it would be on the Xbox if not on the PS2 or GCN.  So my next question, of course, was whether or not Capcom has actually announced it for the GCN (and PS2, not that I care so much about that).  Seeing as how Capcom loves the PS2 (as evidenced by the GameCube no-longer-exclusives like Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7, and Resident Evil 4) I'm almost sure it'd go there.  So if there's a PS2 and Xbox version, and since it's on this board, I'm guessing the GCN version is indeed coming.  Let's hope the controls aren't messed up like in the Mega Man compilation.  I played through it but seriously, with only two buttons they had a fifty-fifty chance even if they flipped a coin.  Like seriously, B should be B, and A should be A.  Like on the NES.  Sheesh.

I, too, liked X-X3, though the first two more so.  X4 and X5 seemed even more cookie-cutter (than usual, I mean) and to try and get a hold of X6-X8 to me didn't seem worth the trouble.  With a compilation I might give them a shot but I feel that the series is dragging on from what I heard.  I did rent Mega Man X: Command Mission a weekend ago and loved it, though, but maybe because it was a whole different genre.

o_0

I ALWAYS rent.  Well, about every other weekend.  With so many games 100% completeable in three days or less, I really don't see the point in paying more than $4.27 (Canadian) on most games.  Some games like RPGs require a second rental, but that still leaves my collection of actually bought games minimal.  I'm sure some of you would want me to pay full price to support good games, but in another sense I'm only supporting games that take more more than three days to complete.

Ooops.  I probably sound like either a braggart or a cheapskate when I bring this up.

Anyway, as a heavy renter, Blockbuster's new policies are awesome.  I hated how they thought I returned things late when I put them in the slot like five minutes before the due time.  However, this new thing doesn't apply to Canada until like March or April, I hear.  So does Star Fox Assualt come out in this manner for Canadians too, or no?  Not that it would matter if it was completeable in three days or less...  >_>

Blockbuster has had other exclusives in the past, like Final Fight Guy on the Super NES.  It was just Final Fight, but with Guy, who had been taken out for the first Super NES port of the arcade game.  Who knows why that was.  Kind of a weird promotion, that.

Sounds like a lot of you guys don't like it.  Whoa.

It's a Nintendo-exclusive bonus, and if EA keeps this up, regardless of whether or not you like EA, it will help towards eliminating the strange mentality of excluding the GameCube in all those stupid conversations that begin with "PlayStation or Xbox"?  People may not always go for the Nintendo bonuses, but if they do find any of them intriguing, they'd at least give the Nintendo version of every EA game another look.

I'm surprised Kingdom Hearts made the list.  Sure it has Disney characters, but it doesn't feel like a family-type of game.  Or maybe I'm confusing family-friendly with games meant to be played with the family or something.  With Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts on the list, that can't be too bad of a thing, and only the truly stupid think a game with Mario would be bad.

We need to look into Link and see what makes him tick. He throws on this mantle of hero every game, but I don't understand his motivation. Why does he do it? The answer seems to be "because he was told to" or "because it's his destiny."

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD?

I guess that's true too.  Funny, Link is my favorite character and I never really thought much about what goes on in his head.  My brother's favorite character is Samus, and she doesn't say much either, or do much worth personality-revealing.  Well, to avoid spoilers, there was that thing that happened near the end of Super Metroid, but what there IS of Samus is implied more than explicitly stated.

I guess the same goes for other Nintendo characters...why does Mario save the princess?  We assume he loves Peach, but aside from a couple on-the-nose smooches, it's rarely ever confirmed.  Why must Kirby save Dream Land again?  We see that King Dedede is rarely TRULY evil, but Kirby goes along with all that is cute and good for no reason.  Maybe Nintendo characters lack souls so that players can identify with them, but as games become more cinematic, these characters seem too...shallow?  I was going to say "quiet", but after Chalres Martinet took on the role of Mario, the guy won't shut up!  Not that that's entirely bad but he sure speaks a lot for a guy you'd think would be out of breath running around.  Again I digress.

Perhaps that's why people love or hate Nintendo characters.  So much is implied or imagined, and little is actually confirmed.  But we're talking about Ubi Soft & EA...

Ubi Soft seems more creative than EA...I haven't played much of any Rayman but at least Ubi Soft used their imagination caps for that franchise.  I don't think they did the original Prince Of Persia or Myst but they seem to be continuing them with some success.  EA's biggest games seem to be movie licenses or sports titles, not that there isn't some creativity in some of them, but they're mostly "cookie-cutter".  If EA wants to buy Ubi Soft and Ubi Soft lets itself be bought, fine, but hopefully this has no negative effect on Ubi Soft's output.  I guess time will tell, as always.

TalkBack / RE:EA Buys Approximately 20% of Ubi Soft
« on: December 20, 2004, 02:19:20 PM »
To the one who compared BG&E to Zelda; Link actually fought Ganon in only half of the games.  SPOILERS...It's just that in the bigger, more well-known Zelda games that he tends to run into Ganon, people forget that he didn't in Adventure Of Link, Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, one of the Oracle games (since when any one person plays them both, you can't face him in the first one you play), Minish Cap...but anyway...

I loved BG&E, but maybe because I rented it on my own impression that it would be good.  The problem with underrated games is that within certain circles they become overrated.  Like, I'm starting to get tired of hearing about how "mature" and great Eternal Darkness is, even though outside of the Nintendo community no one's really heard of it.  Maybe some of you who didn't like BG&E were expecting too much.  Though it was short, I loved almost all of it.

In this past year or two Ubi Soft has really become a publisher worth noting (I never really got into Rayman (though I should) or any of the billion of Tom Clancy games.)  But with all that quality stuff Ubi Soft has, no wonder EA wants it.  Well, it now has it.  EA's generic game library (I must admit I do like some of their games on rentals (I'd never buy them) but there are too few surprises) could use some Ubi Soft stuff, but for Ubi Soft's sake, I hope EA doesn't dictate what they do.

I never understood this stuff.  About buying up companies.  With 19.9%, they have a fifth of the vote on any decisions being made, right?  It's still a negligible minority if Ubi Soft always votes however they want, assuming they all work that well together.  Maybe my problem is envisioning companies as being a single person, as if the same person who makes CastleVania and Contra is the same person who now makes Metal Gear Solid and Yu-Gi-Oh! or something like that.

Even if they DID mention the PS2 version, it'd probably be in fine print, or "COMING SOON", or something.  Hopefully for Nintendo's sake everyone will actually notice the "AVAILABLE NOW for NINTENDO GAMECUBE".  It doesn't make sense to me to promote a game a year in advance.  Some movies do, but games?  You might read about a game on the Internet even two or three years before it actually comes out, but actual advertising that soon would certainly get lost on most people if they have to wait that long, and it's not likely that they'd continually advertise all year.

So I think it's not too unrealistic to think that the PS2 version won't be a major part of this campaign.  I could be wrong, too, though.
