General Chat / Blockbuster + Mario = cursed combination
« on: April 30, 2007, 04:32:10 PM »
Everyone's heard the story about my bad experience with Mario Superstar Baseball and my local Blockbuster, so I won't recount that.

On a related event, when I tried to get that resolved months later, it was just around the time of Super Mario Strikers' release which proved to be another problem when I brought it to the till but they "hadn't received it properly" so I couldn't even rent it that first day.

This past week or two or whatever, I was really hoping to rent Super Paper Mario, of which they got three copies (you know, compared to their dozen Meet The Robinsons and dozen Flushed Aways and dozen Ribbit Kings and that sort of crap).  I had an April coupon leftover that I realized I hadn't used, so I dashed over there after dinner and was delighted to see a copy of Super Paper Mario.

I brought it home, and guess what?  It didn't work!  I could see the cute Disc Channel animation, but I can't get much farther than the "Hold the Wii Remote sideways" screen before it gives me a disc error.  Thanks a lot.

It looked like there were only minor scratches, but I'm guessing they were in all the vital places.  My brother used the "smear on some toothpaste and carefully wash it off" technique as per Haley's Hints, which has helped us with some really scratched discs, like when I finally rented The Goonies and it looked like someone took sandpaper to the disc.  That worked then.  It didn't work this time, the error persisted.

I called the Blockbuster and spoke with a girl who looked for the other copy that was supposedly in (but as we would find out later, apparently someone had actually just returned the case but not the game with it).  Otherwise, she said I could get credit for it and she would let me know when another copy came in.  I went back to the store, and that girl had gone on a break, so only the other girl was there, dealing with some old guy about his credit card issues, while I waited like a knob for several minutes at the front because I didn't want to cross the alarm thingy.  When she finally came over she was at a bit of a loss because the girl I spoke to went on a break and didn't tell her about my situation.  A woman came up to the till so I said she could help her first, since it looked like a simple one.  Yeah, well, she tried to use the May coupon even though it was April and then she was surprised that she got a free rental because she rented five things in the past month and then two more people came into the line-up.   Rrrgh!  Well, at least she knew she ought to be helping me so she did, and we looked for the other Super Paper Mario (since we didn't know yet that it would be fruitless) and then the girl I spoke to finally came back and cleared it up, gave me credit (the full amount to rent a game, too, not to be confused as the lesser amount because of the coupon I used) and since she works full-time, she says I'll be next in line the next time someone decides to actually return a copy, and a non-scratched one at that, to the store.

I guess I'll be playing it soon (unless she forgets, or loses my number, knowing my luck), but as I've never had problems with other games from Blockbuster except Mario's (come to think of it, back in the N64 days they charged me for keeping Mario Tennis for long when I know I returned it on time, grrr), I'm thinking that's probably why I buy (and should get back to buying) Mario games.

I guess if we're not talking about pirated games, I could understand the desire to play games from other regions.

I miss the good old days.  Such a simple fix.

I think Nintendo's warning may have alerted people to the fact that mod chips are available.

It's like when you tell someone "don't think about elephants" and they can't help but think about elephants.

"Don't use mod chips!" - Nintendo UK
"Oh, mod chips are available?  Thanks for letting me know!" - formerly unaware gamer

LOL at Datel's crappy renditions of Groudon and Kyogre on their Action Replay or whatever for the GBA.  And Yugi too.  But they were avoiding lawsuits.

Not to dissuade people from playing this game again from the beginning, but for people who haven't finished it or don't have time to replay it, couldn't they make the game read your GameCube RE4 save?

(This is also making me wonder why LoZ: Collectors Edition disc saves aren't compatible with VC saves.  Or the two GCN discs that had OoT, as well as the VC save.  At least I don't thinl they are.)  Since it's the same save data, even if they were written differently, couldn't the later release be backwards compatible with the previous version's save?  I don't think it would be difficult...

Of course, whatever the requirements are for unlocking extras that weren't in the GameCube version (like Separate Ways and whatever else there might be) might require a replay to unlock anyway.

I think I like Super Kid Icarus better.  Or maybe just currently since I wrapped that up recently.  I'm sure I could spot errors (or things that could've been done better) in the Link's Awakening Advance map, especially since I know what I did and didn't do while I was making it.

Next year's joke is already planned, in fact it was planned for this year but a month earlier it was deemed to be too big so we postponed it and I made Super Kid Icarus alone and from scratch in a month's time.  We should have plenty of time now to make something that would fool people, but as wandering said, I can only fool fans of the series and fans of the series would certainly know better.  >_<

That's actually not the most male-organ function-related statement about my site, actually...but I'm afraid that quote is a bit too explicit to post here.

But as a compliment, which I'm pretty sure that was, thanks.  The Link's Awakening map was made MANUALLY (copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste), before Revned (a regular on my site) created a tile-replacement tool which was incredibly instrumental in getting Super Kid Icarus done on time.  There were still a lot of manual tweaks in Super Kid Icarus's case, so that's why that took a whole month to do.

Geez, you'd think there'd be more attention to this, considering I spent a whole month on it.  I guess fake maps just aren't going to fool anyone, and the people that are fooled probably don't feel fooled at all.

Other sites have tossed around scans and news stories about this in the last week, so it's unlikely to be an April Fool's joke.

Unless it's a really good joke that dupes everyone and they started the rumour mills going late last month just to do so.

Actually, for NiGHTS fans, then it would also simultaneously be a bad joke.

I'm currently replaying Super Kid Icarus on the Super NES.  I forgot how hard this game is.

They totally should bring this to the Virtual Console.  Who's with me on this one?

Signs point Capcom telling us to "go forth and multiply"

My "sausage-pointer", Ada, and going forth and multiplying.  Sounds like fun!

If we already bought Street Fighter II, can we get a discount on Street Fighter II: Turbo?  And then again if/when Super Street Fighter II comes out?  It doesn't seem like it would be hard to do...

141
Yeah, well, I'm not getting a PS2 just for Separate Ways. >_<

Anyone have such a save?  I want to play with Ada.  Er, as her.

(Well, with her too, but that's not quite as possible.)

Here's a new devlopment.

I've been having trouble getting a hold of Ada lately but I know she's busy with school.  Recently, a lot of people I know have joined Facebook, so I'm just a couple clicks away from Wesker's profile.

I didn't mean to snoop (well...I don't really want to think I'm snooping) but in the past little while his relationship status has been "It's Complicated" and just now I noticed it's changed to "Single" and his "looking for:" thing says "Anything he can get".  In other words, it really seems like he's no longer with Ada as of very recently.

I did email Ada in a simple sort of chat-type email yesterday, which was before this revelation, but it was an innocent one so I don't think she would take it as odd if the breakup did happen today or yesterday, nor do I think it could be the push that broke up the relationship (that would be flattering myself, however I do know that Wesker has gone through Ada's email before and he knows I like her).  In any case, if/when the conversation does continue (email, Facebook, Windows Live Messenger, phone, in person, whatever), is it a good idea to mention Wesker or her current possible availability at all?  Or should I just remind her (without being too obvious) that I'm always there at least as a friend and maybe let that lead into something?

Mentioning that she was with Wesker was always a common response if our conversation headed in a particular direction.  Now she can't say that she's with Wesker, but if she says she's with someone else or flat-out not interested in me, I think that would be more painful than her classic response.

But then again it's not about my pain.  At the moment, she's probably not feeling too good.  How can I turn this bad scene into an opportunity for the two of us to get together?

146
Well, I finished Super Mario World on the VC not long after making the original post...of course, I did it the Star World way (:P)...I'll make time to play all the areas at some point...

147
I think I read on Wikipedia that on March 10, Nintendo fans ought to play a game with Mario.  You know, since "MAR10" looks like "MARIO", duh.

Since we don't have Super Paper Mario or Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Party 8 or Super Smash Bros. Brawl yet, obviously we're going to play another game, or maybe finish up one that we put aside.  Or replay a game just for fun's sake.

I can't think of anything other than getting around to buying Super Mario World on the VC.  That's always fun.

So what Mario game are you playing/replaying today?

They keep referring to the "final episodes" even though it's been picked up for a second season.  Is the second "season" consisting of the "final episodes" after this five-week break, or will each season deal with a different set of people and/or different scenarios?

As I said before, I love the show, but I don't want it to drag too long.

Also, how necessary are the webisode comics?  I only read one.  Supposedly the wi-fi woman does a whole lot there; in the show, she only had two very brief appearances.  I was wondering why she wasn't with Matt and Ted when they stormed the Bennet home, and where she is now.

Shapeshifter lady reminds me of Hilary Swank... EDIT: Supposedly she's more of an illusion-creator than a shapeshifter, my bad.  I didn't notice that she supposedly hid Simone's body briefly.  Also, I missed the "helix symbol" arranged in rocks on a table when Ando and Hiro were blocking the door.  Guess I shouldn't be building up EXP in Final Fantasy VI Advance while watching TV.

It's news in San Francisco, but it wasn't news when it came to Edmonton in January, apparently.  Then again, the pre-show activities were really limited here.

Anyway, if you want a full recap of the concert, I have one here, but I do go into a lot of detail, so you might want to be careful about reading too much.

Knowing the people here, I'd recommend it.
