Nintendo Gaming / RE:uncanny wii valley
« on: September 06, 2006, 04:53:44 AM »
I didn't see it in the article, but I remember reading about how when they were doing motion capture for The Polar Express film, as I imagine is the case with anything involving motion capture, is that they can't place motion sensors on the eyes or tongue, so eyes can't show proper motion, and the characters speak with essentially a slab of meat in their mouth.  The result is a lack of natural motion and emotion.  When the face is where people naturally look (I mean, you can't stare at a woman's chest all the time...>_<, not-fully-realistic things will tend to break down real quick.

Here, want some more bad news?  This comes from PS3.net:

PS3 Backwards Compatibility not so Backwards?

If you end up with a PS3 in one of those "rare instances" that can't play CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, PSX discs, and PS2 discs, then all you need is one that can't play PS3 discs.  :P

General Gaming / RE:Sam & Max to be revived via episodic content
« on: September 05, 2006, 09:45:01 AM »
According the GoNintendo today, the Telltale Games CEO thinks that point-and-click games aren't yet dead, and that Sam & Max could do well on the Wii.  No confirmation that they would put out a game (they'd probably be too busy churning out the episodes for the PC) but I think it could work on the Wii (or DS) as well.

Maybe a port of Sam & Max: Hit The Road for the DS will gauge interest.  (And yes, I am aware of SCUMMVM for the DS, but I mean an official port.)

Today, it's 75 days until Pale gets his Wii (on Nov. 19).

Remember when it was 100 days 'til then?  See, we're already a quarter way there (from back then)!  Or at least approximately.  If it's sooner than mid-to-late November, even better.

Cool!  As "Umbrella Corp Chronicles", we likely WILL see Jill and Ada in the same game!  (And Rebecca and Claire too.)  Wowsers.

Hope it's more epic than plain old "gap-filler", though.

Square-Enix thinks the GBA is a better place for their (I), II, IV, V, and VI ports, and III for the DS.  I think they know who rules handhelds.  And all of their non-porting teams are probably working on XIII, XIII Versus, that XIII spin-off mobile phone game, that VII spin-off mobile phone game, thinking up some more VII spin-offs...you know how they are.

If they did do a PSP game, that might be a selling point.  Square-Enix is a big selling name for the PS2 and PS3, after all.  But for some reason they won't.

EDIT: I suppose they're also working on the Wii (and DS?) versions of Crystal Chronicles, plus there's some Chocobo game and a few Dragon Quest games.  They sure know how to keep busy; PSP probably isn't a priority for them...and the longer they stay away, the less likely it ever will be.

More like, since Clash Of Ninja 2 probably obsoletes the first game, they made the first cheaper so that Naruto fans will be more likely to end up buying both instead of just the second one.

Supposedly games like MGS: Portable Ops will use the GPS receiver.  How?  Not sure.  Maybe you can pinpoint other MGS:PO players and sneak up on them, Solid Snake style?

Maybe when you're clearly outside of North American borders you can see risqué content like being able to play as naked Raiden (without hands over his crotch) .

Okay, I really don't know.  It seems too much like a gimmick...I see game hardware pointless if not enough games use it...I would probably never buy a PSP and I don't think many PSP owners would even consider a GPS receiver...unless they needed such a device for real, non-game purposes.  But if they didn't already have a PSP, I would guess that a standalone device is probably cheaper.

Sept. 16 is exactly 100 days before Christmas, so even if they announce a launch date on these Sept.14/15 events, anyone dependent on parents...er, I mean "Santa Claus"...will still have to count down from three digits.

I'm bored.  We need more Wii rumours.  The crazy-yet-still-possible kind.

It will be released sometime between now and The End Of Time, and the suggested retail price will be between $0 and all the money in the world.

No, seriously, I don't see what's so odd about a $174.99 price point.

"Poor" as in "you should take pity on me", or "poor" as in "I have no money"?

They should have them like at E3...each guarded by snazzily-dressed, often blonde women that guide you through the games.

I don't really see how a Nintendo-themed FPS would work well, but that's just me.

I could see a Nintendo RPG that spans several Nintendo worlds, though.  Like Kingdom Hearts through the various Disney worlds and Namco x Capcom involving characters from both companies, a Nintendo RPG would be this epic trek that takes you through the Mushroom Kingdom, Hyrule, Dream Land, etc. and meeting and battling their inhabitants, with the heroes of each world eventually joining your party.  And then the boss would be a Dark Matter-possessed Giga Phazon Ganon or something.  Okay, maybe not.  But I'm just saying I think an RPG would be a good genre to attempt mixing Nintendo worlds again in, much more so than an FPS.

(I thought that with the Metroid-esque creatures in Twilight Princess, Samus hopping planets in Corruption and Mario also hopping planets in Mario Galaxy, that it almost looks as if they would converge onto one same final "Phazon Twlight" enemy in space - which is extremely unlikely, but if ever there was a time that their games came even close, that would be now...)

There are rumours (unless someone's confirmed/denied this by now) that Link and Pikachu are in Mario Strikers Charged.  Personally, I'm not sure if it's the greatest idea to shove every Nintendo character into every Mario multiplayer game.  Maybe some in a few, but I don't think everything should become a big crossover fest.

Then maybe Sony should just shut up - I remember earlier this summer it seemed like every week they opened their mouths and said something that was either blatantly or strongly implied to be bad news for their PS3.

They probably feel like they need to remind people that they're out there, what with initial support sliding towards the Wii...but it's hard to say that there's no such thing as bad attention when they speak.

I'd like the DoA girls more if they didn't look so...plasticy.

I can see why they're likeable (boing boing!), but one of the ones I like the least seems to be everyone's favourite...Kasumi.  I don't like how she kind of looks baby-faced.  It's just not appealing.  But that's just my opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:UK Nintendo Magazine to reveal BIG exclusive?!?!?!
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:44:59 AM »
GoNintendo says that the exclusive was BWii, which supposedly wasn't going to be shown a LGC.

And the DVD is a Zelda DVD, which doesn't sound very good if it's just screens and clips from past games.

I say they should make a really good Zelda DVD for the original game's 20th anniversary next year.

Fans can be the harshest critics.  After all, they have the most expectations and so are the easiest to be disappointed.

Hence, that's why Zelda fans have so much to say about Twilight Princess, and already have strong opinions about every little thing, despite the fact that most of us haven't even played it yet.  (Geez, I was at E3 and didn't even try the demo. Don't ask.)

I remember a Sony rep (I wouldn't be surprised if it was Kaz, if he was around then) bragging at some conference in 2001 about the PSX (or PSOne if you prefer) to be selling better than the GameCube and Xbox.  They aren't just arrogant now....they were already arrogant then.  Even if the PSX did sell better than the GameCube and Xbox (which I seriously doubt it ever did,) did they seriously think that would last?  Sheesh.

People play PlayStation because of the plethora of titles, but they should see some of the silliness that Sony themselves say.

I would like to see a pack-in demo disc, actually.

(And on that note, Nintendo Power better give out Wii demo discs soon if they want me to continuing subscribing!  I said that the year the GameCube came out and the only reason I resubscribed was for the Zelda Collectors Disc (and then the Metroid Prime 2 demo disc, which wasn't that great, and then the Animal Crossing: Wild World Player's Guide).)

EDIT: Funny thing is, just now, I read on GoNintendo about a Zelda DVD packed with the latest issue of the European Nintendo magazine.  Too bad it doesn't sound like it has much.  I think they should make a 20th anniversary DVD for next year that actually has lots of good stuff in it.

Back on topic, I want Wii demo discs.  Everywhere.  So that people who buy a Wii because of initial hype will still be interested in the many ways to play future games.
