Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii is so not hardcore. And you know it!
« on: September 08, 2006, 08:25:23 AM »
Well, the reason why I think "following the group" is mindless is because casual gamers were buying the PS2 simply because everyone else had one, and that it had the most games - without really looking at all consoles' game line-ups.  It's fanboyish to turn a blind eye to the GameCube library just because none of your friends have a GameCube.

That's an example; you could substitute the PS2 and GameCube above for any other (or at least the part about the "turning a blind eye")...but because the PS2 was ahead by so much, I'm certain there were casual gamers who simply bought PS2s without really thinking.  To want a GameCube, you'd pretty much have to want it, in which case you know what games are on it, and that is more hardcore.  You could own a PS2 and NOT be a mindless drone, of course, but I think it's all the casual gamers that make me tend to think a PS2 owner is more likely to be one.

Just my opinion.

I always thought Sony fanboys were more dronish than Nintendo fanboys.

Sony fanboys believe in the PlayStation name just because of marketing, whereas Nintendo fanboys swear by the games.

In other words, Sony believes in Sony because they're told to, and Nintendo fanboys at least know what they like.  At least, that's how I'd like to see it...  >_>

And Nintendo fanboys seem more "out there" as they are still a minority.  Or were.  And are typically more convinced that they like their games.

But how is that a bad thing?  You shouldn't buy a game console if you don't want to be a fan of its games.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:A mic on the Wiimote seems promising
« on: September 08, 2006, 04:46:31 AM »
Ocarina Of Time was great, but how many times can you play it?  It's on the N64. It's twice on the GameCube; once on the Wind Waker pre-order disc, along with the Master Quest version, and then yet again on The Legend Of Zelda Collectors Edition disc.  Okay, maybe not everyone pre-orders or subscribes to Nintendo Power to get these goodies, but still.

I guess there are other instruments used in Zelda games (like a flute, and I think there was another ocarina or flute in one of the GBC games) so it wouldn't be surprising if it showed up again, and I realize that it was really just an example...but a microphone on the controller may be of limited use and it's crowded enough as it is.

Okay, maybe not too-limited use...the DS uses it in some games, there's always online chat, Hey You Pikachu!, Mario Party 6, Mario Party 7, Odama, and other crazy uses Nintendo could come up with but I think a headset would be more comfortable (not to mention more stylish, and, you know, "hardcore"-looking.  Maybe).

It's not bad news at all!

It's just not...exciting.

I like that picture of that guy gawking at the Wii's private parts, though.

Unless they also mean numbers or weird characters or something.  Otherwise, I bet it's one of those!

Pfff.

It's Super Mario.  SUPER.  MARIO.  Plus Paper.

It might not seem all that big, but it'll sell.

Selling even a fraction of any Mario game is good.

I so remember that! It is funny how things that once were so exciting are now only minor to games.

I miss finishing off Macbeth by hitting the eight switches and slamming Mechbeth into the arms factory or whatever that was.  Biggest force feedback moment in the first major home console game to have force feedback.  That's one for the history books.

And yet I bet most people didn't know the Macbeth boss's name is Mechbeth.

I would've bolded the "it really won’t get you any closer to the news most people want to know", which means either that it's going to be a letdown or that it's going to be totally unexpected.

And do we know that it's good news?  It just seems more likely than bad.  If it was bad news that had to be released, they'd just let it out and get it over with instead of hyping it up and holding it 'til tomorrow.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Am I screwed? Should I already have pre-ordered?
« on: September 07, 2006, 01:03:37 PM »
Part of why I was wondering was that I was in Toys ? Us a week or two ago (I live in Canada if that matters) and I saw that they were advertising that they were taking Twilight Princess (I forget which version they meant) pre-orders as well as Wii pre-orders.  The in-store ads were very simple.  They said something like two controllers and something else - maybe a game - but I don't know if it was a real bundle, as in, it sounded speculative.  No price was shown on the ad, though I think they said to put $50 down to reserve it.

I suppose I could've asked for more info, but I'm guessing they won't have Wii ads in their flyers or a more confident ad campaign until they know the real details like date and price and available games and accessories.

Good to know, though, if most people haven't preordered yet that I'm in the same boat at this point.

Gosh, I hope they have the component output cables on the first day.  I don't want to have to show off the Wii to my doubting friends the first day and have it actually look less crisp than my GameCube.  >_<

I wouldn't say it could be overhyped if we're only hearing about it now...

I hope it's good news about the Wii, obviously.  If it's bad news, that would suck, but hopefully that's as unlikely as I think.  If it's bad news for the PS3, it's par for the course or whatever, if it's good news, it's still unlikely to turn the tide.  I don't really care about the Xbox 360 so I doubt I'll care no matter what, especially if it's another new wireless accessory or a new but generic game or something like that.

Then again maybe I'm doubting it all.  If it's MAJOR, then I SHOULD care, whatever it is for whichever console it is, but then I'm hyping it up, now aren't I?

All I THINK I care about is the Wii launch date and price, but if they announce even one of the two, aren't they killing the point of their event next week?

EDIT: If it's Eastern Time, and I live in Mountain Time, does that mean I might catch it very shortly after 10:00 PM?  I could always stay up late - but not much later than that unless I'm sure it really IS MAJOR...in which case I might not be able to sleep.  >_<

General Chat / RE:Has anyone gone to the Video Games Live concert?
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:03:55 AM »
There are worldwide locations...London, UK, and Tokyo, Japan and probably elsewhere are among them.  There's no pattern or "flow" of the locations played at, though...they jump all over the globe...which makes me wonder why it looks like they'll be coming to Edmonton during the winter.  Do they really want to come here when it's at its coldest?

Okay, the past couple winters have been abnormally warm.  But you'd still wonder why?  Then again now that I think about it there are related events that they've played at, but I can't think of any event in the winter worth playing Video Games Live at during the winter.  Huh.

I hope that someone here has some impressions of it.  They've played at a few places already, including in the States, so someone here should know something...

Nintendo Gaming / Am I screwed? Should I already have pre-ordered?
« on: September 07, 2006, 09:57:56 AM »
With the major Wii hype this year, and the PS3 trying to kill itself before it's even released, I'm starting to grow heistant about my chances of securing a Wii, since I haven't pre-ordered.  Am I just being paranoid today?

I've never relied on preorders.  Well, I've done so - twice...and neither of them went through.

Okay, the first one wasn't a pre-order, exactly, but more like a reservation that turned out to be unnecessary.  I went to an EBGames when the GBA was new...I think this was the summer of 2001?  I was surprised to run into a Drama classmate who was working there.  I asked her about CastleVania: Circle Of The Moon.  She put my name down and said I'd be contacted when they got a shipment of more of them.  They called me back a couple months later - when I'd already acquired the game elsewhere and finished it the morning they called me.  >_<

Then I was hyped about the GameCube, so I had it pre-ordered at Future Shop.  I was waiting in front of the store the morning of launch, and the only person ahead of me was this mother who was getting it for her boys and husband.  For a while it seemed like we were the only ones waiting, though a couple more people eventually showed up.  But then my dad, who seemed to be embarrassed about the whole waiting-in-line thing, had cruised around the block and found that Zellers had already opened and had lots of GameCubes and no line-up at all.  So we grabbed a Jet Black GameCube from there instead (and cancelled my Future Shop pre-order later in the day), and I was already back home taking on the Death Star in Rogue Leader just as Future Shop was opening.

I got the DS on the first day at Wal-Mart, no problems save for a small line-up.  Throughout the course of the GameCube, I've managed to score games on the first day of release (or at least the first day I had time to go shopping for them), never bothering with pre-orders and never having difficulty finding those games (except for when renting - stupid Blockbuster and Mario Superstar Baseball!  $#@%! But that's another story).  Oh, wait, I did have trouble getting Nintendogs...

Now all that unnecessary banter above has led me to believe that on whatever day the Wii comes out (which we'll hopefully know next week), I might be able to waltz into a Zellers or Wal-Mart that morning and just pick up a Wii and a couple games off the shelf.  That is, if it was as relatively unhyped (well, compared to the Xbox) like the GameCube or like the DS (which initially wasn't as hot as it has come to be).  As my singular difficulty with Nintendogs shows, I may be in for some trouble if I don't get off my lazy butt.

Every week this year it seems like there's been praise for the Wii and disdain for the PS3.  The Wii is even interesting people who at one point seemed to be anti-Nintendo fanboys.  These people are now going to be after the coveted Wii, and now I wonder if I should've already pre-ordered.

I already spent a few hundred dollars to go to E3 and see the Wii for myself firsthand - it'd look bad if I couldn't get my own Wii just as early as anybody else this autumn!

Again: should I have already pre-ordered?  I don't know why I feel like I should at least wait for Nintendo's unveiling of the date and price...

General Gaming / RE:Sony getting hit Hard lately

I'd like to put in a Wii preorder, but I'm waiting for an official launch date and price.  Not sure why, though...because I'd bet there are probably a lot of Wii preorders already, moreso each time Sony makes a blunder, which is often enough.

And this is a big one...with the increasing unlikeliness of having a PS3 under anyone's tree this Christmas, many more people will want a Wii this Christmas.  I hope I'm not already screwed for the Wii.

It may be good news for Nintendo fan(boy)s like myself that the PS3 is doing so badly before it's even released, but if that means more people want a Wii then I may really have to consider not only preordering the Wii but also games and possible accessories as well.  o_0  Stupid Sony's not content with just screwing themselves over, it seems.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:When's the Wii launch date?
« on: September 07, 2006, 08:27:35 AM »
NOVEMBER 12TH, 2006.

Barring some early release surprise, that sounds most logical to me.

That's two days before my brother's birthday, one day before the girl I like's birthday, a rumoured date according to IGN, a Sunday, it's before the PS3 launch, it's before American Thanksgiving, and it's only 66 days away now...

Choke on it, Sony.

Karma is a wonderful thing, isn't it?  Perhaps it is involved.  I can kind of understand them being arrogant, but apparently arrogant AND stupid?  Arrogance can't possibly lead to so many bad decisions and bad luck that lead to production problems that lead to constant delays that lead to developer support dropping that lead to consumer distaste that could very well possibly lead to them falling from #1.  Or can it?  Perhaps I speak too soon.  Perhaps the PS3 will be the greatest thing EVER.  But it certainly looks like it would take a miracle for that to happen.  Or, perhaps, quite a few miracles.  I'm sure they can market the thing well - or at least a lot - but if the product is as shoddy as everyone thinks it is now, it's certainly not going to be quite the hype machine when word-of-mouth keeps killing it.

At the same time, it would take a lot of screw-ups on Nintendo's part to deflate Wii hype now.  But we all knew that.

The main site's official trailer is cool, but you can also see the arcade medley and MGS portions here:
http://wii.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=6556 - Scroll down a bit to where it says "concert".  There's also a costume contest in the pre-show, that includes people dressed as Mario, Link, and Samus!  (I was thinking how cool it would be if someone had a fully detailed Samus outfit...if one was used here, that's a guaranteed video card prize right there!)

Video Games Live

My friend brought this to my attention, that it's coming to Edmonton, and looking at the site today, I see that she's right! It is coming up next on the list, though a date and location and ticket sales aren't yet set up. I'm guessing it'd be December or January. (Does anyone really want to be in Edmonton during the winter?) Maybe I'll ask her if she wants to go, she thought it'd be "pretty freaking cool" to hear the Super Mario Bros. jingle being performed, but I'm sure it's got more than just that.

Actually, looking at the list of games, I'm surprised to see Beyond Good & Evil...I loved that game, but I thought it went pretty much unnoticed this past generation, and yet it's here among big franchises like Mario, Sonic, CastleVania, and Myst. I don't really care much that Halo is on there...a five-year-old franchise with two games shouldn't be mentioned BEFORE Mario and Zelda...but I gripe too much. It'll be cool, even if Tommy Tallarico (who often gets on my nerves) is involved.

At least I hope it's cool. Has anyone gone to this? Would you say it's any good?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Report your "Nintendo Virus" sightings
« on: September 06, 2006, 09:51:12 AM »
Last Thursday, I had dinner with a girl *gasp* at a diner-esque place on Whyte Ave (you know, "the" place to hang out in Edmonton).  On the way out, as we were paying, the girl I was with started a brief conversation with the waitress/server/whatever while I busied myself with my debit card.  The conversation started out with something about the place being busy.  Then it was something about people being more thrifty because of the money left over from student loans.  Then something.  I wasn't paying attention at this point, but it was only a half-minute, tops.  Then the server suddenly exclaimed to her, "NEW ZELDA COMING SOON!"

That surprised me.  o_0  I mean, that a Whyte Ave diner person would care about such things.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention.  My supervisor (I may have referred to her as my boss in the past but she isn't really), who I introduced Brain Age to, recently introduced Brain Age to our (actual) boss, who now has a DS Lite and Brain Age as well - and as an early birthday present.  Couldn't wait to train the brain, I guess.  Passing along the love of Brain Age is truly "viral".  I didn't really believe the whole word-of-mouth thing, really, but now I'm a link in that chain.  Perhaps my boss will introduce Brain Age to someone else...or me and my supervisor probably will again.

I think all you do is type "mount c: c:\" and then from there run things as if it was back in the good ol' DOS days?

I mean, seriously, that's reminding me of the Bob The Angry Flower comic where he has to press two buttons on a machine to get money any time he needs.  But he keeps pressing just one and he can't be bothered to figure out that he has to press two.  Honestly!  :P

I recently replayed Monkey Island 2, this time using SCUMMVM for the DS.  But Sam & Max: Hit The Road doesn't work on the DS with voices, at least last time I checked.

There's probably a Wikipedia article on SCUMMVM.  I think SCUMM stands for something like "SCript Utility for Maniac Mansion", and VM is "Virtual Machine".  It's a way (an emulator, I guess) of running SCUMM-based games (many LucasArts games, but also other point-and-click adventure games like Simon The Sorceror) on many, many other platforms, including the DS.  It's amazing how well it works.

If I did my math right, if they have exactly 400000 units for North America, which probably means just the US and Canada, and going by Wikipedia's population counts for those countries, if they randomly handed out PS3s, you would have a 1 in 826.2025 (or 0.121%) chance of getting one.  In Japan it's even worse (something like 1 in 1247)!  If you have one, you might be popular...at least with people who still want to even try out the PS3 this year.

And, hey, Lord_die_seis!  I posted that same thing like 13 posts before you did (last night, even) and no one responded!  >_<
