General Gaming / RE:Killer Instinct coming to the 360?
« on: September 26, 2006, 06:59:19 PM »
I remember now!  9 hits and 7 hits were "Blaster" and "Master"...which is weird that I forgot since "Blaster" is kind of out there, and Blaster Master was such a wicked NES game.

(Mortal Kombat's better now...  >_<  Can't we just forget 4, Gold, and the side-stories?)

I kinda liked KI and KI2/KIG.

I remember when I actually knew how to make combos...let's see...opener, linker, then some special move, which I guess is another linker, then an ender or an Ultra Combo ender.  As the opponent falls back down I give them a projectile to juggle.

Then there were C-C-C-Combo Breakers.  Pop-ups (quick recovery and counter-hit after being knocked down).  Aerial openers.  Jump-in openers (quick to quick, medium to fierce, fierce to medium).  Starting a combo with the end part of a multi-hit special move (like using the last part of B. Orchid's Flik-Flak to extend the combo longer than usual and pull off a 48-hit combo in the first KI).  Ultimate Combos (which weren't really combos).  Etc.

I bet I can still remember the combo names...let's see...Triple, Super, Hyper, Brutal, um...something for seven..., Awesome, um...something for nine..., Monster, King, Killer, Ultra, Ultimate...

Yeah, it was cool - at the time.  I think it helped that it was a Nintendo-exclusive fighter that had a real combo system, even if few people actually did learn every possible nuance.

(If Kim Wu, Maya, and B. Orchid are jiggly, then Tecmo's DoA girls are gonna have some competition on the Xbox 360!)

Hard to say if it would've done better on a Nintendo console.  I guess it depends on how much the game is promoted.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Mii and Wario
« on: September 26, 2006, 09:13:43 AM »
I thought this was already mentioned, actually.  I'm assuming you mean WarioWare: Smooth Moves.

It would make sense that several Nintendo-developed games (and perhaps some third-party Wii games) would make use of the Miis for them to dedicate a WiiChannel for them.  (I imagine they may be useable in Animal Crossing for the Wii, and other games that may use totally different styles could at least use Mii data to come up with an approximation that fits its style.)

No, it's not actually supporting eight controllers...the Nunchuks add a control stick, an accelerometer, and two buttons to the WiiPointer, but the WiiPointer is the only part that sends input to the Wii itself.

Now, if the Nunchuks were a totally separate wireless portion, then it would be essentially eight controllers.  And then you could hope to use eight separate WiiPointers instead.  Or maybe eight Nunchuks?

I wish I had a girlfriend.

But the girl I like, she doesn't mind me ranting about games all the time.  I got her excited about the Wii, and though she's very often too busy with school, she says she'll make time to come over one day and play with my Wii!  >_>

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii North American launch to have 1 Million Wii's

Sony, with their limited quantities, will probably be able to brag of a higher percentage of PS3s sold in less time.  As in, they're more likely to sell 100% of their first shipment in one day if their shipment is smaller...like, you know, only 400,000 for North America.

« on: September 25, 2006, 09:54:56 AM »
I remember showing the old trailer to my brother one day, and then a commercial for NBC's Heroes came up right after. Weird.  (Doesn't that show start today?)

Can they name it that?  If Biohazard had to become Resident Evil because of a rock band with that name or whatever, wouldn't Heroes have the same difficulty keeping its name because of the TV show?

(If it hasn't already been said, plural of Wii is Wiis, not Wii's.  Apostrophes aren't for plurals!  >_< )

Whether the Wal-Mart thing is true, it does seem likely that for any store to safely have Wii kiosks, they might have to consider making more space for them.  There may be settings for the WiiPointers' sensitivity, but you can't sell Red Steel's sword action as well if you don't have people making decent-sized motions.

EDIT: Okay, Wal-Mart probably wouldn't be showing Red Steel.  But something like WarioWare: Smooth Moves or Wii Sports wouldn't be the same without full-motion action.

I never actually owned a Super Multitap (or whatever the Super NES multiplayer acessory was called) or any games that use it, despite loving the Super Bomberman games (even the Japanese ones...3 and 4 had the best vs. music!).

If I ever get a hankering for the two Killer Instinct games, that may be a problem though.  I'm really surprised I don't own more Rareware games, though.  I loved the Banjo-Kazooie games and of course GoldenEye.

My NES selection is a mishmash of games, but the majority of games from the Super NES onward are Nintendo's own, so there's a good chance most of them will be available on the Virtual Console at some point.  Assuming I think it's worth it to rebuy my collection...which (perhaps sadly), I do.

When the Virtual Console has all my past games (or at least most of them), I can put away the four past Nintendo consoles and all their games and controllers and accessories.  So I'll have room.  I don't think I'll need four sets of bongoes, steering wheel attachments, or Zapper attachments.  I had a worry about too many accessories but we'll see what happens.

I don't know, I heard an awful lot about Geometry Wars on Xbox Live Arcade - and I'm not even truly familiar with Xbox Live.

And I'm guessing some old VC games are deeper than Geometry Wars, and there could be similar new VC games.

Feel free to prove me wrong, I'm just spouting crap on stuff I don't know about.

E3's still happening.

I just won't be able to go next year.

If many third-party developers really didn't jump onto the Wii bandwagon until after this year's E3, perhaps they will have a lot to show by next year.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Jill Valentine To Return In Resident Evil Wii!?!
« on: September 22, 2006, 11:49:58 AM »
2's been on, like, every system at the time.  I remember rumours earlier this year of RE2 being remade for the PC.  It already was on the PC, but this is probably a remake.  (Why not, if it's been on everything, might as well be on everything again.)

I admit to being a latecomer to the RE series, mostly coming on board after the impulse purchase of "REmake".  I played 2 and 3 on the PC before playing 0 and 4 on the GameCube.  We've also got Code Veronica - it came with the Dreamcast my brother bought on eBay a few years ago.  (Not really sure why - I think he got it for Shenmue but he doesn't even play that much because he doesn't like some forklift race or something...)  For some reason I didn't get very far in Code Veronica and didn't care much for it...but maybe one of these days I'll try again, since I do like the series enough that I probably should.

I really liked 2 for some reason, perhaps that's why it was ported so much.  I'd recommend it.  3 wasn't as good though.  Since C:V isn't in this Umbrella Chronicles I'm wondering how important that story is, but from what I briefly glimpsed in a story FAQ I thought it would be important enough to mention...

Are we referring to the "pointer feature" as something different from tilt/motion sensing?  'Cause I'm sure Excite Truck, and any other racing game, particularly when using the steering wheel attachment, can't keep facing the screen.

Hey, I'm just saying.  It is still most likely that he's screwing up.  But how about the flash reflection?  Isn't that possible?  The flash does look pretty bright in that picture.  Or is the black part not reflective?  Maybe it's not; it's fairly black, in fact, it almost looks like it's drawn in on some of the other pictures.

Nintendo should then take the picture in question and drawn in a black area if they're going to keep using it.  And/or find models that know what they're doing, but don't you think he would've seen what the other three are doing?  Strange.

Just to play devil's advocate here...is that guy REALLY holding the WiiPointer backwards?  Is whatever they're supposed to be playing absolutely unplayable if he prefers to have his thumb right where the 1 and 2 buttons are?  Do the WiiPointers actually need to face the screen like light guns?  Or maybe he held it at just the right angle that the really bright flash is reflecting off of the black surface and only making it appear like he's holding it backwards?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Suprised no one is flipping out about this yet ...
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:34:03 AM »
The thing about Nintendo is that they don't usually make total cookie-cutter sequels.  Or at least they put effort into avoiding that outright with Zelda.

Ocarina Of Time was a step into 3D.  (I dare say it was a better transition that Mario's, whose Mario 64 wasn't as brickalicious or Koopa Troopa-stompy as I would've liked.)  After that, each game had to be distinctly different.

Majora's Mask had the three-day time system and mask transformations.

Wind Waker had the cel-shaded look and lots of sailing.

Twilight Princess, at least on the Wii, has Wii controls.  And for those opting for the GameCube version, at least in both there's the Twilight Realm and Link's apparent lycanthropy (werewolfism).  It won't fall victim to just being a better-looking Ocarina Of Time...though I guess that's not exactly a bad thing.

I have component output cables for the 'Cube and was hoping that it'll be forwards compatible with the Wii, but someone pointed out that it was unlikely.

As I said before, I hope component output cables are available on Day One or earlier, I don't want my Wii games to look less crisp than my GameCube games!  Especially if I have to show it to the Nintendo-haters that day.

I played Silent Hill 2-4 on the PC, so a PS2 isn't required for those.  Just saying.  Also played Psychonauts (though on the PC).  Recommended.

Boo!  I hope you're kidding.  Majora's Mask was GREAT.  That game had many sidequests that made you really care about the other characters in the game.  The time system provided a cool challenge - you had to complete sidequests to the point where you could get a mask which would survive the trips back with you in time to prove that you did it.  I wouldn't want a time system like that in every game, but Majora's Mask was awesome, and the villain was pretty cool.  Most non-Ganon/dorf final bosses in Zelda games suck (I'm looking at you guys, Oracle bosses!), but Majora is at least comparable to Ganon in terms of badassness.  Maybe more so.  Anyway, I don't like how this game is always in the shadow of Ocarina Of Time (I've heard people dismiss Majora's Mask simply because it looked like Ocarina Of Time - which is an incredibly shallow reason, IMO)...

OMG, my Zelda fanboy side is showing.  But really, Majora's Mask isn't bad at all, and I don't yet have any reason to believe Twilight Princess will be bad.  Mirroring, handedness, supposedly patched-on controls...those aren't "reasons".  (Ignoring the CD-i Zelda games,) I don't think any Zelda game has ever been bad, so do you really think this "spiritual successor" to Ocarina Of Time could be?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Points the new Air Miles?
« on: September 22, 2006, 04:50:47 AM »
I don't think they'd give away points for third-party accessories (not all of them are licensed, and it would provide incentive to buy first-party versions if the first-party ones were the only ones with WiiPoints).

Also, I see no mention of WiiPoints given out with subscriptions to Nintendo Power or the purchase of Official Nintendo Power Player's Guides.  The Nintendo Power one in particular seems the most likely.

How come I didn't know the Classic Controllers plug into the Wiimote?  That kinda sucks.  I was hoping they could be wireless on their own.  And if not, to have the Wiimote latch on directly so you don't have to deal with a dangly cord.  Oh well.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Calculator - how much will you spend?
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:50:48 AM »
N-Sider.com has a handy "Nintendo Wii Calculator", to easily figure out how much you'll spend on launch day.

Here is the American version.
Here is the Canadian version.

(If this is accurate, looks like I have to save up $513.99. That's in Canadian dollars, with 6% tax, and includes a second WiiPointer, second Nunchuk, two Classic Controllers, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and 2000 WiiPoints. Splitting the cost with my brother, that's almost exactly $257. Not bad.)

EDIT: If the price doesn't update when adding/subtracting games, choose a different tax rate and then reselect the proper one.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Think $250 is expensive?
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:11:35 AM »
(ThePerm: it's "would've", not "would of".)

That's true though that people think "inexpensive" = "cheap" = "shoddy/inferior", which isn't always the case.  Hopefully they don't take this talk of being a "second console" to mean "second-place".  Some people just imply the wrong things, which is unfortunate.

A lot of gamers aren't Internet denizens who hear every rumour or every bit of so-called "rationale" that would lead them to believe that a $149 or $199 price is likely.  It's only because of that that $250 sounds like a lot, but for the casual gamer just hearing about it, and seeing that it's still significantly less than the PS3 and Xbox 360, it's a deal.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda on Wii is mirrored, game map reversed...
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:04:08 AM »
It's all comparisons and expectations.

If Twilight Princess is fun enough on its own, and playable with its controls (this is Nintendo we're talking about, and this is Zelda, they're not going to screw it up) I'm not going to complain about mirroring, or how else the controls were, or whatever.

It's like how Nintendo should've dumped Wind Waker on us without the SpaceWorld 2000 demo.

From what we know, we know that Twilight Princess was ported with controls added, but unless this "patchwork" comes up as actually noticeable shoddiness in the final product, I think we're being pessimistic here.  I actually enjoyed Star Fox Adventures (bite me) and Eternal Darkness despite their N64 pre-incarnations.  Twilight Princess is different because the previous-gen version will also be available, making comparisons possible, but it comes out something like 11 days later.  Guess what?  By then I'd have already finished the Wii version and won't care to compare if I ever even did.
