General Chat / Give me E3 survival tips.
« on: March 09, 2006, 02:29:48 PM »
I applied, and got approved!  I'm hoping a couple of my friends can get approved too...

For those of you who have gone to previous E3s, do you have any tips for an E3 newbie?

Phoenix Wright - TGS 2005 promo case
Sorry if this is old.

It's a case that Phoenix Wright tackles at Tokyo Game Show 2005 to promote the DS game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.  Anyone who knows anything about this game would probably enjoy this clip.  If anything, it's an amusing example of how court proceedings are like in the game.

General Chat / Happy Valentine's Day!
« on: February 13, 2006, 02:10:27 PM »
Is it Valentine's, Valentines, or Valentines'?

VALENTINES!

Anyway, here's something I made two years ago.

Yes, I had to write out all their names because the dumb-bums on GameFAQs couldn't figure out that their last names are all "Valentine".

General Chat / Oh, Nintendo Power. How silly.
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:58:52 PM »
Nintendo Power always used to come later than they do now, but at least they were consistent.  I subscribed from Jan. 1991 (Mega Man III) to Dec. 2001 (SSBM) and for most of that 11-year streak they always came after the 20th of the month they were meant for.  After resubscribing to get the Zelda Collectors Edition Disc, I noticed they now come a LOT sooner...like on the 20th of a month, I might get an issue meant for the month after the next.

But it makes it harder to tell if they're late or if I'm missing an issue, now that I occasionally get them missed entirely, which was never the case way back when.

So I missed issue #200...or so I thought.  I got #201 and I'm, like, where's the conclusion to the Top 200?  Where's the cool poster?  And immediately went to report the issue as missing on their web site, which is now not an unfamiliar process, unfortunately.  The next day I got it by regular mail.  I'm like, something doesn't seem right here...I get #200 the day AFTER #201 and via regular mail.  First-class mail doesn't even go that fast.

Maybe it's not Nintendo Power but the mail service.  As I suspected, I've now got another issue #200.  >_<  I guess I get another cool poster but I hope this doesn't count against my free replacements if they happen to lose another one this year...

NWR Forums Discord / "The Usual Suspects" banner up top.
« on: February 09, 2006, 08:45:34 AM »
I like that "The Usual Suspects" banner up there.  Well, I guess it's one of many random banners here, but I just saw that particular one for the first time just now.

What is that from?  Any singular Mario game in particular?  Mario Superstar Baseball, maybe?  (Stupid Blockbuster Canada only has eight copies in the WHOLE COUNTRY so I haven't gotten a chance to play it.  ;_; )  Is there a larger version of this image anywhere?

It would be sweet as, like, a long, lengthwise, full-size poster.  I guess you'd need a freakishly long room for that, though...

General Gaming / What's the name of that game?
« on: February 06, 2006, 08:40:19 AM »
Help me out here.  This isn't going to be easy...

I recall a wacky Japanese game...it was probably for the Sega CD or Sega Saturn.  I mostly remember it because of an ad I saw in an old GamePro magazine, so it would've been well over ten years ago, so I'm leaning more towards the Sega CD.  Definitely not for a Nintendo system, anyway.  Well, since it was in GamePro, in a full-page ad, I'm guessing it was American-released (or going to be) but it definitely had Japanese weirdness in it.

The ad is pretty much, get this...

Just a photo of a guy's face in profile spewing milk out of his nose in supposed laughter.

There wasn't much of the game itself, but I think he was looking upwards slightly where they showed the box and that was about it.  Nasal milk.  And...that's it.

The background was black, and the box art of the game was colourful, and was probably crammed with Japanese-looking characters and things.

I don't know the name of the game, I don't know the genre of the game, I'm not 100% sure of the console it came out for, but I can't get the image of a guy snorting out his milk out of my head so I must find out what it is.

Anyone have any leads?

Nintendo Gaming / Looking for official Mega Man X Collection artwork!
« on: February 03, 2006, 07:09:24 PM »
I'm looking for official artwork of all the Mega Man X bosses from Mega Man X - Mega Man X 6.

I can't seem to find much on the web. There're some repeats. What I can find is scattered all over, so there's varying degrees of size and quality.

I need decently-sized, decent quality of ALL of them, and I'm hoping it's all in one place.  There are so many Mega Man fan sites that have such galleries "under construction" that it's frustrating.

Let me know, thanks. This is really important for me.

Nintendo Gaming / Will my Nintendog eat me?
« on: February 03, 2006, 05:10:11 AM »
I've got a miniature Daschund named Bogey.  Ever since I got Nintendogs, I played with him every day.  I at least took him for a walk (or several) each day and trained him to get gold medals on the championship level of all the competitions.  I even got him 99 consecutive gold wins on the Championship level of the Obedience Trials.

But then I got Mario Kart DS.  I was never that good at Mario Kart, but somehow I was able to keep getting further, and soon it was fighting for my attention as well.  I played enough to unlock everything in the game, and then Animal Crossing: Wild World came out.

And now when I'm not playing AC:WW, well, I got a copy of CastleVania: Dawn Of Sorrow so that takes up my DS time too.  And now I'm afraid to put Nintendogs back in...

General Chat / Are there any good artists here?
« on: January 30, 2006, 11:45:20 AM »
For a special but secret project, I am in need of a good artist.  One that can draw well, either by hand or with the aid of the computer, but they'd have to be able to emulate other people's styles as close as possible.  Or at least one certain style...

It may partially give it away but the project requires someone who can draw Maverick-type Reploids that look as if they were official artwork as done by Capcom, as they have done for each of their Mega Man X games.  They would also have to be able to do more than one picture a week (on average) until the project is done, which has a set deadline, for reasons that will become evident by the nature of the project.  Like THAT doesn't give it away.

If you know any artist, or are one, or know how I can find one, please respond to this topic.

This isn't considered spam, is it?  I'm just asking for help...

Nintendo Gaming / Remind me why I shouldn't be playing Sprung.
« on: January 30, 2006, 08:55:46 AM »
I don't know why, but I'm really getting into it.  o_0

It's not a dating sim like it looks like...it's a text adventure, more like...

That one date with Kiki was weird but intriguing.  I didn't think logic puzzles were what people do on dates. She mentions how she and her three friends have different favourites in colour, music, and flowers, and you have to create "sparks" in conversation so she'll give you clues to figure out what each of them like (and by extension, what she likes) to get her in the hot tub.  Prior to that, I had to talk to her boyfriend and extract enough evidence from the inconsistencies in his "testimony" to prove that he was cheating on her.  Phoenix Wright?  Not quite, but at least the writing was better than I expected, even if it is still cheesy in places.

Yeah, and I like Friday the 13th on the NES, too.  Shoot me.

Nintendo Gaming / LoZ things to while waiting for LoZ: Twilight Princess
« on: January 30, 2006, 04:26:54 AM »
The wait for Twilight Princess might give me some time to catch up on Zelda stuff.  I'm a huge Zelda fan and even for me there are things I haven't yet done:

1. Gotten around to playing Four Swords.  Since that requires another person this isn't easy, but it's the only official game I still have yet to play.
2. Gotten around to finishing Link's Awakening DX.  I've played the non-DX version enough times but never played at least the Color Dungeon, sheesh.
3. Gotten the Hylian Loach in Ocarina Of Time.  Grrr.  And then if it's there, I'd probably have to do it again in the Master Quest version.
4. Gotten all the Heart Pieces in Minish Cap.  I probably have to start over, though.
5. Shot up that fish guy in every location in Wind Waker.  Oh, and finishing the game in his pyjamas.
6. Gotten to Level 99 in Weapon Master Mode of Soul Calibur II.  I'm not good at using Link, but he's useful in one stage for quickly throwing a guy over the edge.  It still takes hundreds more of that to get to the highest Level, though...yipes.
7. Finished The Legend Of Zelda in Animal Crossing.  It's harder than I remember, I guess I got too used to more fluid controls.
8. Finished Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link on the Colectors Edition Disc.
9. Finished the various challenges in SSBM with Link, Young Link, Ganondorf, and Zelda/Sheik.  I don't remember, but there are probably some Multi-Man Melees left to do.
10. Tried that riddle/basket-capture thing or whatever in the GBA version of A Link To The Past.  I forget what this is about but it's still something I ought to do.
11. Gotten a hold of The Legend Of Zelda cartoon DVD.  And then I'd have to watch it.
12. Fixed my glitched copy of Super Smash Bros. so that I can select characters other than Mario (like, say, for example, Link) in any of the 1-P modes.
13. Finished the Game & Watch Zelda.  I'd have to find it again, though.  I bought it in really good condition...hope it still is.  I could play the Game & Watch Gallery version on the GBA, but then I'd have to earn it first too.
14. Gotten a hold of the Japanese version of Four Swords Adventures just for Tetra's Trackers.  Hope I'll be able to understand it, though.
15. Gotten a hold of the Game Watch Zelda, not to be confused with the Game & Watch Zelda.  And then I'd have to finish it.
16. Gotten a hold of the CD-i games and a CD-i, and braving those three weird Zelda games on it.

See?  Lots still to do.  I think I've probably forgotten something in the Oracle games, too...

I'm one of those people that get irked when people have errors in their writing.  Like confusing "you're"/"your" or when people put "should of" instead of "should've" and etc.

Yeah, I'm a spelling fascist.  Being on Internet forums probably aren't good places for me to be on if I took it any more seriously.

But I'm disappointed in those of you here, mostly fellow Nintendo fans, who forget the space in Nintendo's most successful line of products.  The Game Boy.  Not the GameBoy, not the Gameboy.  Game Boy.  Two words.  Game Boy Advance is three words, not two.  Ever since the first Game Boy it's been two words.  Every time you start up your Game Boy or Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance or their variants that can play Game Boy games, it clearly reminds you what it is.

*dling!*  *"GAME BOY" appears on screen*

See that?  Two words.

Someone once adamantly refused this to me.  He said because it was one thing, it should properly be one word.  He was pretty insistent on that point.  Yet I'm pretty sure no one ever considered calling the NES the "Nintendoentertainmentsystem".  It'd be confusing to play Nintendogs on your "Nintendods".  He probably enjoys "videogames" while the rest of us enjoy "video games".

Seriously, people.  Quit messing up Nintendo's handheld line's name.

General Chat / I've been reading random Wikipedia articles. Good stuff.
« on: January 24, 2006, 08:50:47 AM »
I looked up:
SUPER MARIO
LEGEND OF ZELDA
SAMUS ARAN
OPTIMUS PRIME
ADA WONG

Good stuff.  I already knew a lot of stuff there, but it's a good reference.  Also, obscure facts.  I didn't know an American legally changed his name to Optimus Prime.  o_0

Somehow I get the feeling Wikipedia is a good source for character bios.  Probably because official sources won't tell you everything, and Wikipedia is probably updated more frequently from like everyone who knows anything at all about them.

Does anyone here have their own Wikipedia bio?

*goes to look up ex-PGC guy Billy Berghammer and Louie the Cat*

EDIT: Nothing.  I must've spelled their names wrong.

General Gaming / What games on any system use a real-time clock?
« on: January 20, 2006, 12:17:02 PM »
Other than for keeping track of gameplay time or dating save files with the last time saved, what games use a real-time clock and calendar?  Nearly all that I know of are Nintendo's, and most of them I own...  Now why aren't there more games like these?

Extensive use:
Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: Wild World
Pokémon: Silver/Gold/Crystal/Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald Versions

Day/Night:
Mario Party 6 (certain mini-games, and I think whole boards are different in day and night)
Star Wars: Rogue Leader - Rogue Squadron II (that one mission where you steal that Imperial shuttle)

Very minor:
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age Of Heroes (the big clock in one background shows the current time...yay?)
Rise Of The Triad (in this old PC game, I recall that Christmas put Santa hats on the main characters and changed the music to a remix of "Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen")

Anything else?

General Chat / Getting into E3
« on: January 11, 2006, 05:11:14 PM »
Yes, this is a serious topic.

I want to get into E3 this year, if I ever am able to go to one, this would be it.

Only thing is, I had hopes last year that I'd be able to do it this year.  Looking over the requirements list I'm scratching my head as to how I thought I could, it doesn't seem any different from last year.

E3 2006 Accepted Form of Industry Identification
Resale Tax Certificate
Company Credit Card (WITH APPLICANT'S NAME)
Insurance Card
Business Ad (WITH BUSINESS CARD)
Business License
Commercial Lease (WITH COMPANY NAME)
Paycheck Stub
W-2 Form

WTF.  I don't think I have any of those.  I'll be getting a cheque from a certain somebody for advertising (you know who), but it's not a steady paycheque, it's not like I actually work for them, so I don't know if it counts as a paycheque stub.

Business license?  Where do I get one of those?  Would my site qualify as a "business" in anyone's definition?  I looked on my city's web site.  Yeah, I don't provide a real service or have any real products, other than a cheap Cafepress store.  Big whoop.  I seriously doubt I could be taken seriously if I tried to apply for a city business license.  Sure, I make money from advertising now (from two different sources) but what kind of business is that?  Advertising seems like the obvious choice, but I don't know, I don't feel like a business.

I've seen sites that seemed smaller and less well-known than mine (not to be arrogant, but I have a feeling that is the case) whose webmasters got in without a problem.  I thought I heard that if I registered as "media personnel" it should be easy to get in.  I see nothing like that on the official E3 registration form.

I should find those web sites again, who had those claiming to have gone to E3, and ask them what channels they went through.  If there's still a possibility I can get in with my dorky site, I must!

In the meantime I'll ask here.  I'm guessing that SOMEbody here must've been able to get into E3.  The deadline is my birthday, April 7, so I still have some time but I can't dawdle...

Stupid thing is that I don't want to go alone, but I operate my web site alone, so even if I can get in, would I want to go alone?  There must be some way I can take one friend.  It'll be sucky without at least someone there I know...sheesh.

EDIT: I found a bunch of forum posts from people saying stuff about how easy it is to get in (apparently they won't check into your credentials if it sounds like you have anything to do with games, even if loosely, as long as you have credentials to begin with), but among the more reputable is this: http://nintendo.about.com/od/e32005coverage/a/howtoe32005.htm
I gotta keep digging...

I remembered someone at Nintendo saying that controller accessories should be cheap to manufacture since the bulk of what is needed is in the "remote control" portion.  Hence, if developers wanted to, it wouldn't be too much to ask, cost-wise, to do so.

Now aside from the clunkiness of possibly having a bunch of accessories that are unique to particular games, I wonder how this would affect my gaming lifestyle, which revolves around renting a game on a weekend, finishing it 100%, returning it, and not caring about it anymore.  I'm very highly dependent on rentals to keep from going broke playing all the games I want to.

Already I'm disadvantaged by Blockbuster not knowing what's going on - if you recall from my other topic, Blockbuster only allocated eight copies of Mario Superstar Baseball to ALL OF CANADA, which excluded the nearest store, or any in this province, for that matter, and I only finally got that straight answer today, the same day I tried to rent Super Mario Strikers but the store "received them incorrectly" so even though they had them they couldn't rent them out...but that's another story.  Point is, sometimes you wonder if they could handle keeping track of games and accessories if they have trouble with just games.

Another Mario game excluded from my local Blockbuster is DDR: Mario Mix, but that's probably because of the large pad that's required to play it.  I can rent the Mario Party games with the microphone, and I've rented Hey, You Pikachu! with its microphone and EarthBound with its packaged-in Player's Guide so they have been capable of dealing with small-ish items.  No DK: Jungle Beat or either of the DKa games, likely due to the fact that the bongos are realtively big.

I'm sure the Revolution accessories will usually be of decent size, but if they are numerous, rental places may become hesitant to rent them out.  Even if the Revolution is so great, you know I've said time and again that Blockbuster has no business sense to pick a dozen Ribbit Kings over a single copy of Mario Superstar Baseball.</broken record>  So it wouldn't be worth it for them, surely.

What do you guys think?  Could having controller accessories get "out of hand"?  Pun intended, I won't lie to you there.

(On a related but more general note: if Blockbuster doesn't carry Revolution games for this very reason, and if there's any truth to the thing about the PS3 registering the discs being used on them so that games can't be lent out or rented out, then the Xbox 360 could very easily rule the renting scene...)

95
As we were saying in the topic about the Revolution being at least a "second console" for every gamer, that is, a system that's unique and cheap enough to warrant being purchased even if one owned an Xbox 360 or PS3, we pretty much understood that to be a strategy to get Nintendo back into first place.

How likely do you guys think it would be, though, honestly? We can all see that the Nintendo Revolution is something different. But for the first year or so, when people have recently spent multiple hundreds of dollars on an Xbox 360 and/or PS3, they may not feel the desire to put down a couple more for the Revolution even though it's cheaper and revolutionary. There will be enough games on the other two to keep them busy or distracted from Nintendo stuff as well.

Could Nintendo actually get back into first place? Will "Nintendo" once again be nearly synonymous with video games in general? What would that mean to the industry? What would that mean for Nintendo fans?  What would that mean for those anti-Nintendo fanboys that refuse to even accept Nintendo's contributions to the gaming world?

I'm a big Nintendo fan, and I would like to see Nintendo at least do better.  Maybe I underestimate the revolutionariness of the system or overestimate the stubbornness of the world to continue excluding Nintendo in all their game-related talk.

96
I'm surprised they even asked.  IGN's pretty big around these parts..."these parts" being the INTARWEB.

I'm sure most of you know of my site, if just barely.  (I would mention it but it might be considered spamming, so I'll wait for someone to ask first.)  Yep, it's pretty ugly.  It's got lots of content but not much in style.  I AM in the process of redesigning it so it'll have a new look starting in the new year.  But how could they have known that?  o_0

Assuming the offer is serious, and I don't see why not, what price should I ask of them?  No one's offered to pay for ad space on my site before, and even if they had, no one's ever come close to being IGN.  I don't exactly revere them but holy schnikes.

I hear that in haggling the first person to name a price "loses".  Should I probably folow that advice and ask if they'd like to make a specific offer first?

(To be more specific, they are asking for text links to three IGN Entertainment properties, Direct2Drive, FilePlanet, and 3DGamers.)

General Gaming / CNN.com's front page right now - Xbox 360 and GameCube
« on: November 24, 2005, 08:48:59 AM »
There are two stories related to gaming on the front page of CNN.com right now:
"Microsoft reports Xbox 360 faults" & "Slow GameCube sales"

I understand the topical nature of the first story on the Xbox 360 but what is the point of the scond story about the GameCube, which isn't really all that surprising?  If anything, it's further hurting Nintendo as we go into the Christmas season.  The last time I heard about Nintendo on CNN.com was the story that The Legend Of Zelda: Twlight Princess was delayed.

Grrr.

Nintendo Gaming / Bypassing firewalls like ZoneAlarm
« on: November 24, 2005, 07:08:52 AM »
I got my Wi-Fi USB Connector in the mail yesterday!  Which was sweet because I'm Canadian and thought I heard they were only just shipping them today...I guess I got my order in fast enough...but anyway...

I got it to work, but only when I turned off ZoneAlarm, the firewall that I use.  I want to be safe and even though there is some firewall thing with the router that I have anyway, it'd be nice if it could work with ZoneAlarm on as well.

I tried making ZoneAlarm allow access to the program, but it doesn't work just by doing that.  I'm guessing there's more I must change, or else I'll just have to keep ZoneAlarm off all the time I go online with the DS...
