This is Dragonball GT we are talking about poor video compression can only help with this crapfest. I had forgotten how pathetic this show was until I caught an episode last week. Blech....DB:GT is the Street Fighter: The Movie Game of the Dragonball series, yes it was made but most people wisely pretend it doesn't exist. I'm glad to see Majesco is really pushing this GBA Video thing, I'm honestly not that interested but its nice to see people getting the GBA to do stuff it wasn't intended to do.

Hmm. I too a certain that the DS can do to 3D on both screens at once. I could be mistaken but I could have sworn that this was one of the features the developers kept harping on in Nintendo's DS hype video at E3. If it can't do 3D on both screen then it seriously limits a lot of cool ideas I had for DS titles. It would make the second screen a useless feature.

Nintendo provides advertisement to third parties... FF Chrystal Chronicles. MVP Baseball, Prince of Persia...  Nintendo should have provided adverstisment to this game, because it could have benefited Nintendo..... Its no big loss for Konami... Btw. Konami doesnt advertisme much... not even on the PS2...

Okay, did you not read my post?  Nintendo didn't not develop any of those titles. FF:CC was actually published by Nintendo so they advertised it so they could recoupe some on their investment. Plus they were really trying to push connectivity...but thats another post. Outside of FF:CC Nintendo didn't fund the dev. cost of any of the other titles. Nintendo paid for MGS:TT they provided the dev. team and funded its development. This means Nintendo saw too it that there was no way Konami could lose money on MGS:TT. Its KONAMI's job to capitalize on the situation and to advertise the game. If Konami would have developed the game I'd agree with you but think about what you are saying. I have to give Konami of Japan credit...at least they advertised the game and tried to ensure its success. Konami of America just didn't care.

Are you saying that Nintendo should pay a 3rd parties development cost, and pay the advertising. While the 3rd party pulls in all the cash from publishing duties? Is that what you saying. Thats nonsense. If thats the case they a better off just developing their own games and resigning themselves to a niche market. Its one thing to cut deals with 3rd parties, its another thing to foot the complete bill for their titles. I mean if Nintendo is going to have to do that. The should just open their war chest up, by a half dozen of the top third party developers and make them 2nd party developers. I mean at least with 2nd party developers you are supposed to fund development, publish, and advertise their titles.

Yeah I said it before and I repeat it. The PSP is worthless. I mean if you don't have a PS2 I guess it would be useful but if you do. You are going to be buying nearly identical games twice. On top of that, you have to buy all you favorite movies a second time. I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees this scam for what it is.

Do you know what that means, Ian? Nintendo is guaranteed to be in this industry for a very long time. You could have the best selling product in the world, but a loss is still a loss. The only role public image plays is getting you to that point of profitability, but it seems Nintendo has found an alternate route to that particular destination.

Yes Mouse but you are ignoring something obvious. Nintendo's usebarse continues to erode with each generation and the number one reason for that is their image. Nintendo reminds me of the Chevy Camaro. The Camaro continued to appeal to its core base and basically ignored anyone else. That sounds fine but it caused the sales of the Camaro to continually erode and eventually it got canned. As much as I don't like the Mustang, it basically stayed true enough to its fans to keep them buying, and it changed enough to draw in new fans and continue to supplement its fan base. Nintendo can still stay Nintendo and draw in more casual fans. Nintendo can continue to make their style of games, all they have to do is insure that 2nd and 3rd parties make the types of games that appeal to casual gamers. Nintendo can only maintain a healthy fanbase by insuring that their games are exposed to as many gamers as possible. I think thats what Ian may have been getting at.

In all honestly, I dont expect the DS medium to be that big of deal. The DS seems to be using a SD card type medium and if noticed Nintendo said the DS carts will be at least one gigbabit in size. So I'm guessing thats just the smallest cart they will sell initially with larger carts coming as the cost comes down. From my understanding DS carts are less expensive than GBA carts and don't have the manufacturing lag. So while they aren't GC discs, they are a much better alternative to GBA carts. Besides you have to figure in the negatives of the PSP meduim, the drive is gonna eat battery power and I have to wonder about the durablitiy of the discs....not to mention what their cost per unit will be.

Yeah Omen you are absolutely correct. Any good news relating to Nintendo gets little mention if not ignored completely. I am one the many to bemoan Nintendo's ridiculous stance in reference to on-line gaming. Yet the DS includes Wi-Fi and it barely gets any mention. I figured one of the bigger stories coming out of E3 would be that there is a Nintendo system that truly supports on-line play. But of course any positive Nintendo news gets the brush off. The weakest Nintendo e3 coverage has to go to Gameinformer....sad sad sad. Thats all I'm gonna say in reference to that. Anyway, as far as Twin Snakes sales go. I lay the blame squarely on Konami's shoulder's. True Nintendo is lacking when it comes to the marketing of "mature" games, but the fact of the matter is this: Nintendo provided the development team for Twin Snakes, funded the games development. All Konmai did was supervise the frickin cut scenes. Adverstising the game is on them. I mean its ludicrous to expect Nintendo to development and market 3rd party titles. I mean I can expect one or the other but not both. Thats just unreasonable.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The inevitable DS vs PSP debate.
« on: May 15, 2004, 04:02:06 PM »
The PSP is pointless. I'm mean really what is the point of the PSP. Okay I'm playing PS2 games on a portable system with worse graphics on a smaller screen and wait for it. I'm gonna be constrainted to 2 and 1/2 hours of play time? Please. The PSP isn't any revolution its a retread, its just like the TurboExpress and Sega Nomad. Except with those two handhelds at least you could play the home consoles games on the portable rendition. The PSP will have you buying the same game twice. I mean I don't want to buy GT4 twice. Wow you can bring your PS2 save games over to the PSP version of the game. You know that would be a great idea...if I didn't have to buy the game twice to do it. I mean buying two versions of a game for the GCN/GBA connectivity didn't fly and that was paying $50 for a GC game and $30 for the GBA game. With the glory of the PSP I'd be paying $50 bucks for each version of the game. I'm sorry I will NOT be buying a PSP. I'm sure Sony will be able to sucker quite a few mainstream morons...well if they can get the price to $200. Well I have a party to run off to...I'll continue this rant later.

General Gaming / RE:E3 Thoughts
« on: May 13, 2004, 08:46:59 AM »
As usual I'm in complete agreement with Ian. You really have to stop jacking into my brain man I too was completely floored by Nintendo's showing. I was unsure about the DS and now I have to own it. The new Zelda is simply amazing. The Spaceworld demo has nothing on what was shown at this E3. I mean the detail on Link's model. I've always wondered what a detailed Link model would look like...now I have my answer. A Wars game for GC, and Fire Emblem for GC....Nintendo seems to have turned an about face and acted quickly on what fans have been clamoring for.

Ian I am also concerned about the sequelitis going on at Nintendo. Thats stated, I think I know what Nintendo is doing. I think Nintendo is trying to sure up its diehard fans before the N5/Revolution launch. Even the most diehard of Nintendo fans have been dismayed as of late and this E3 does a lot towards sowing up that open wound. The DS is a hint at the N5/Revolution which is a good thing. I finally think I see who Nintendo may get around its on-line stance now. Although I think it may be a bit limiting, it could work. N5/Revolution will probably have the Wi-Fi like the DS. If the DS or Developer's System as Nintendo calls it is truly indicative of what Nintendo is believes and is now striving for then,  I think Nintendo may be capable of truly knocking Sony's block off. Wow that was long sentence....sorry about that guys. Anyway things are looking up. I hope Nintendo can keep the momentum going.

As far as budget titles go Ian, just cut my $3-$5 per until fees in half for budget titles. In regards to what Sega's announcement will be, I have bad feeling its an alliance with MS. I hope its and alliance with Nintendo but I've really have no confidence in Nintendo as of late. Given the size of their warchest, I would have expected more effort from them. It seems like they are just going through the motions IMO. Sega could announce a new console I wouldn't completely rule out that possibility. Since their games did sell better on their own hardware but I think an alliance with Nintendo, Sony, or MS would be more likely. Oh and to Nintendo, YOU HAVE 6 TO 7 BILLION DOLLARS JUST LYING AROUND!!! USE SOME OF IT FOR GOD'S SAKE!!

BTW Sorry about yelling. Psst...Nintendo buy Sega....Psst..Psst Do it now.

Great idea Ian, you always come up with something that is fleshed out and thought provoking. I agree with you on Nintendo's seeming lack of effort with the GC. As said in a past Nintendojo editorial it seems like there are two Nintendo's one that runs the Gamecube and the company that pulls out all the stops for the GBA.

I had an idea that I thought that Nintendo would use. They won't do it but I was thinking that Nintendo shoud charge damn near nothing as far as licensing fees. MS charges about $7 per game sold, Sony and Nintendo are in the $9-10 per game range. Of course this excludes deals done to garner major support but my logic is this. Nintendo sells a boatload of games, their problem is that their userbase has been strinking rapidly since the SNES. I think Nintendo should charge $3-$5 as there licensing fee per game. Exclusive titles would get a $3 licensing fee and with other games getting a $4 to $5 dollar licensing fee. Sony would be hesitant to match this, MS would match it most likely match it but it would cause them to hemorrhage even more money. I've observed Sony. Now that they are on top, they are slow to equal the oppositions policy. In fact the are bordering on 80s Nintendo arrogance. Nintendo sells the most first party titles and would be least affected by the initial negatives of lower licensing fees and benenfit most from the rewards. They'd garner more third party support which would lead to a larger userbase. With a larger user base Nintendo would sell more games and at the $30+ dollars per unit sold they'd make more money in the long run.

Sorry about babbling.

I concur with Ian and Perm, E3 is make or break for Nintendo. Why you ask? Because this forum has some of the most diehard Nintendo fans and we have no confidence in Nintendo anymore. I will go as far as to say that there is almost no way Nintendo can impress me at this years E3. I hope.....I really sincerely hope I'm wrong on this, but sadly I doubt it.

Well Ocarina Blue, thanks for comparing me to Ian. I don't think I'm on his level but the compliment is appreciated nonetheless. I completely agree with what Omen said. A lot of us Nintendo diehards are no longer gonna just run out and buy the N5. We are going to wait and way our decisions very carefully. Nintendo continues to hemorrhage developers at an unbelievable level. I mean when it was developers like Acclaim, I could look the other way but  talented now its developers like Factor 5 and SK. With Nintendo having a larger worldwide usebase than the X-box, it just inexcusable.

Also, I am so sick of the weak opposing view that some others have presented to our growing displeasure with Nintendo. When your most loyal and diehard customers begin to doubt you. You have a serious problem. Saying it doesn't matter we still have Metroid Prime 2 doesn't cut it. Nintendo has continued to ignore us and at this point I no longer believe Nintendo knows best. They've have continued to make boneheaded decisions and I really miss Yamauchi. Yes he was arrogant and we mocked him but Iwata seems certifiable. At least under Yamauchi, Nintendo said what they did. Iwata talks out of his ass. He says Nintendo is going after older gamers but Nintendo has done little if anything to prove their sincerity. The fact that they've lost SK and Capcom seems to be backing off its support speaks volumes.

When the GC was launching, I saw its flaws but I thought it was a great step forward for Nintendo. The thing about it was that some of the Gamecubes flaws were blatantly obviously to anyone. The purple color and pathetic memory card size were inexcusable. Its seem Nintendo was aware these issues, SD adapter and Jet Black alternate color, but in current Nintendo fashion basically dismissed them. Thats the way Nintendo currently handles all of its problems. Lip service and broken promises. Think about some the issues Nintendo has. Think about how they handled them.

BTW I won't even start on their poor decisions with 3rd parties....that would be a thread all its own.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo isn't the problem..you are.
« on: April 13, 2004, 10:02:27 PM »
Sorry I'm not the problem. Nintendo is. I do my part and I go out and buy all the quality GC games that I can afford, and thats on top of my GBA purchases. Its Nintendo's job the crack open that 6 billion dollar warchest and make the necessary investments to ensure the success of their consoles. If Nintendo would get off their ass and actually attempt to increase their userbase and broaden its audience they wouldn't be having this problems. From a business standpoint you are going to do whats best for your company. Sony has the largest userbase and MS whores its self out to any third party that will have it. Nintendo has the best leverage of the Big 3 and they refuse to use it. Nintendo may not be able to match MS's money hats but they aren't dependent on licensing fees as Sony and MS. Nintendo should be charging the lowest licensing fees to attract more money and the resulting higher userbase would cause higher sales of their games and more than make up the difference. Not only that they'd severly cut into Sony and MS's revenues. Nintendo could given even lower licensing fees for exclusive titles. They could do what Sony did with its online service. Sony didn't spend the 500 million that MS did. They just provided their 3rd parties with the necessary software to produce online titles for their console and made there network adapter readily available. Nintendo has done neither. Nintendo has been and continues to say one think and do another. Hmm...sounds like Nintendo is the problem to me.

I've said it earlier in this thread and I'll say it again Nintendo is on thin ice with me. From reading all the reaction at several sites Nintendo has practically pissed off its most loyal fans. I never thought I'd see the day in which I was so disgusted with Nintendo that I actually doubt I'll be buying there next console. Nintendo reminds me of the that out of touch relative thats needs an intervention. Nintendo has 6 billion dollars just laying around and frankly, I'm sick of their lack of common business sense. If they actually put forth the effort to obtain third party exclusives, produced games for the older gamer, and produced a decent sized memory card at LAUNCH instead of nickel and diming us. Nintendo might actually outsell its competitors and with a larger userbase the could sell more of their own titles and make more cash for themselves. On top of that, they'd expose their type of games to a larger variety of gamer and who knows the mainstream gamer might actually like the Nintendo brand of gaming. Of course will never find any of this out because Nintendo can't remove its cranium from its posterior. I never thought I'd find myself agreeing with Eric Mattei of Nintendojo....but now I see why he's become so fed up.  Jeez Nintendo, if you ran the Gamecube business like your GBA business you might be on top.

I reserve final judgement until I get more details on what has happened, but this isn't like Rare. I'm not very happy about this. Nintendo is on very thin ice with me and the temperature keeps rising. Between Iwata's insane statements, Nintendo's flat out refusal to market the few mature titles it produces, and crap like this...I'm damn near the brink. At least during the N64 era I was continually wowed by Nintendo's in house games. While I own a few, there has been no in-house Nintendo title that has floored me. I loved F-Zero but that done by AV, Eternal Darkness was stellar but that was done by SK, replaying MGS on Cube was and is a blast. Wind Waker had great presentation but I got half way through and just flat out stopped playing. Normally I can't pull myself away from a Zelda title, but between WW and MM I haven't truely enjoyed a Zelda title since Ocarina of Time. I loved Mario 64 but half way through Sunshine I just didn't feel like playing anymore. Were they bad games? No but If I truly think a game is stellar I can't pull myself away until I complete it. I beat Beyond Good & Evil in a few days because I just had to complete it. There has been a game from Nintendo that has done that from all generation. I hope the Big N shapes up because both my X-box and PS2 have six inches of dust on them. If Nintendo falters...I'm gonna have to find a new hobby.

::crosses his fingers:: Please DS, have that Nintendo magic.

Nintendo Gaming / Tales of Legendia?
« on: April 11, 2004, 11:29:55 AM »
With the announcement of Tales of Rebirth and a Tales of Symphonia port for PS2, I was wondering if Namco still planned on releasing the Tales of Symphonia sequel on GC. The game was called Tales of Legendia I believe at it was announced after the strong sales of ToS on GC in Japan. Namco said before the release of Tales of Symphonia that they were expected worldwide sales of it and Baten Kaitos to 500,000 units per title. ToS has already sold over 300,000 units in Japan. I'm sure it won't have any problems selling at least as much between the US and European markets. I don't know how Baten Kaitos sold. I know it didn't sell as well as Tales of Symphonia. Could the sales of Baten Kaitos be the reason for the port of Tales of Symphonia? Or did Nintendo pulll and MS and get a limited exclusive deal? And most importantly, are we still getting Tales of Legendia? Whether we are or not I'm still buying both ToS and BK. Strong sales would defintately get Namco's attention.

Ok, that's a pretty broad   assumption.   But   you can't deny the fact that  Nintendo's tactics came and bit them in the backside when Sony  emerged with the Playstation.   Now,  I doubt that  Square Enix is going to turn around and   make a console to compete with the playstation, but you know what I mean.

You might be looking at it as  Nintendo being too nice, but  I see it as Nintendo learned their lesson.   That's also seen in the  aid and collaberations they're engaging in with other developers, too.   You can't  pull  under-the-table stunts forever.    But if you   establish  frinedly relationships with other companies,  you can ensure their loyalty and support.

I agree with you point about Nintendo's authoritarian tactics in the 80s and 90s but Nintendo didn't backstab Sony over the SNES CD. Sony tried to slide one by on Nintendo and Nintendo choose another partner. Sony wanted royalty fees on each CD game sold and that infuriated Nintendo to say the least. I'm sorry but I don't see Nintendo or any other hardware manufacturer paying royalty fees on there own games to another party. That defeats the purpose of being a hardware manufacturer. If you are going to pay royalty fees on your own hardware why spend the money to develop it in the first place.

Well the stories a fake so don't go worrying yourselfs. GCadvanced.com has the info confirming the story as false. FF8 was the worst Final Fantasy game I've played. So I'm glad its a fake. I despised FF7 and FF8 was even worse. I'm sure there really is a traditional Final Fantasy game in development for GC though. There is too much smoke around this story for it to be baseless. After the travesty that was FFX-2 I'm weary of a sequel. If they did make another sequel, I wouldn't mine one to Final Fantasy 4 but that would be contigent on Square not botching it.

Agreed.  There aren't really any 16-bit 2D games that look bad.  With a little visual  cleanup virtually any Genesis/SNES game could have been released now as an original GBA title and few would find it out of place.  N64 games are the 3D equivalent of NES games in that their visuals haven't held up at all.  There's a reason that there aren't very many NES ports on the GBA.

Plus what's the point of making a nifty dual screen system if it's just going to be used for N64 ports?  One thing I think we can be sure of is that even if third parties get port happy Nintendo probably won't and will make new content to promote the dual screen design.

Once again, Ian hits the nail on the head. I'm suprised that a gaming mag hasn't gotten wise to your insights. Although I'm sure the DS will have its trashy ports with "tacked on" dual screen features. I'm also sure, like the GBA that the DS will have stellar games that are both innovative and push the hardware beyond its limits. I'm sure the DS's 3D games will look quite better than the games of N64. The DS has more storage space, so textures shouldn't have that blur....and after seeing games like Need For Speed Undergound for GBA. I'm sure that the DS will be able to impress.
