General Gaming / PSP - Jeanne D'Arc
« on: September 15, 2007, 02:48:11 AM »

Alright, I recently picked up a PSP (was going to get into homebrew, but my 3.51 FW stopped that pretty quickly), and am in the process of getting some games for it, to tide me over til I get my hands on that fancy battery...

Jeanne D'Arc is basically described as a very good reason to own a PSP right now, basically being the best game on the system at the moment.  I am seriously thinking about picking it up, but...

Well, I tried for a Very Long Time to get into Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance.  I'm talking 20 hours or so of me trying very hard to like it.  I never did.  I took this as a sign that SRPG's aren't for me.  I did, however, enjoy watching my friend play Disgaea.  He was good at it and loved the first FFT, and I seemed to get more enjoyment out of watching him play Disgaea than I ever did playing FFT:A...

What my post is boiling down to is...is Jeanne D'Arc the SRPG for people who don't seem to like SRPG's?  Is it so good that I will play it regardless of my previous experiences with the genre? Or should I stick to Tales of the World and Katamari for now?

ITT we discuss the "Symphonia Killer", which is ok cause it was made by the same guys.

Everything I've read about this game has been positive, and its largley being hailed as one of the best Tales games made yet.  So...what have you, the average PGCer heard about this game? And are you going to get it?

On May 11, hotel heiress and socialite Paris Hilton not only showed up late to endorse her upcoming cell phone game, but she also called it by the wrong name. "Sorry I'm late. I'm really excited to have my new videogame, Diamond Quest," she announced proudly to the gawking crowds.

Problem is, the name of the Gameloft game -- which appeared in large letters behind the celebrity -- is "Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam." Ouch! Night-vision goggles are not required to play this handheld puzzle diversion. Ahem

bwahahahaha.

Just got a look at the new Superman Returns trailer...and I must say, it looks positively great.  Kevin Spacey does a very good Lex Luthor, and the fact they left in the original score just goes to show how much of a sequel to the original movies this really is.

I am so gonna watch this.

NWR Forums Discord / I had a Dream about Zelda!
« on: April 23, 2006, 10:36:01 AM »
It was kinda wierd.  I had just picked up TP, and I started playing it.  And then I realized "Oh shi-, I have Zelda." and got all excited.

Anyways, then the gameplay started, and it was...wierd.  LIke, it wasn't just "hit A to swing", but when you entered combat, each button was mapped to a different sword stroke, i.e. A was thrust, B was downward swing, X was up and to the left, and Y was up and to the right.

Of course, when I woke up, I was all disappointed, but it was still really cool having that "I finally have Zelda" feeling in my dream.

Anyways, whaddya think of the control scheme?  A portent of things to come? Or just dream logic?

Sony's answer to the Rev-mote.

Now, does this mean the PS3 is actually a time machine and will send players back in time to kill Yamauchi as a child?

Or is Kutaragi slowly growing more insane as time passes?

NWR Forums Discord / Obligatory Pirates V Ninja Thread
« on: April 03, 2006, 05:01:31 PM »
I am sorry, but ninjas are not cooler than pirates, and here is why.

Pirates don't need to be stealthy to kill you.  They'll do it while you look at them.  Ninjas are pansies and need stuff like "stealth" and "poison" to come out on top.

A pirate? He'll cut you open or shoot you full of holes, then feed you to the sharks, all while looking you in the eye.

Also, International Speak Like A Pirate day.  You don't see any "Speak Like Ninja" days, do you?  Thats right, they are silent and therefore SUCK.

Nintendo Gaming / Ancel working on sequel to BG&E?

French site JeuxPo.com is reporting that Ubisoft's recently Knighted-in-France Michel Ancel is working on part two of the Beyond Good & Evil franchise, which was thought to have been cancelled due to low sales of the original. Set for all next generation consoles in 2007, this could be superb news if true!

I dunno how reliable this JeuxPo.com is, but this is incredible news if its true.

Anyone have a track record for JeuxPo.com's reliability about this stuff?

I swear to god, if this a PS3 only release, I will cry all the way to the store as I am forced to purchase a hopped up Blu-ray player to get more BG&E goodness.

Nintendo Gaming / SSBM Orchestral CD
« on: February 28, 2006, 11:40:00 AM »
A while back...at least a few months, one of the posters here brought up the whole SSBM orchestral CD that came with NP back in 2003, and I think they lost it?  Or something.

Well!  Today, I stumbled upon a site that has mp3's from said CD.

-Yeah, lets not do this here...-

:Mods, if this is like...frowned upon, go ahead and delete it or whatever...as this CD was never really sold, I didn't know if it was licensed or not.:

General Gaming / RPG DILEMMA
« on: February 14, 2006, 02:03:03 PM »
Alright...having recently come into possesion of a PS2, I have been getting RPG's like mad...and now I have a crisis.

Should I get Tales of Legendia or Atelier Iris?

I LOVED Tales of Symphonia, and TOL sounds like much the same thing (generic story but awesome characterization), and I was pretty much sold on it til I read it HAD NO MULTIPLAYER.

Bastards.  I had the most fun playing TOS with three other people, all working in concert to lay the smack down on some angelic ass.

However, as I said...characterization is supposed to be top notch, and you can even continue with character specific sidequests once you beat the game.

Of course, looking for recipes and titles is always awesome as well.

But...Atelier Iris has a few things going for it...I read the music is absolutly gorgeous, had pretty good characterization, and the combination of battle quirks, item creation and overworld platforming elements made it pretty fun! (save for some slight control elements)

I'm just...torn.  So, I come to you, my trusty, fellow Ninty fans.

Any words of wisdom for a lost soul?

Nintendo Gaming / Reggie in Feb's NP...

He has a little editorial thing in the front of this months NP...and something he said caught my attention...

"Our third-party partners are...working hard on launch titles right now."

Had it been confirmed before now that there would be third party launch titles?  Am I just slow?

Or did Reggie just drop a bomb?

This is a small music video done by some guys done at SNL...very much worth watching...although, if you're one of those people who hate rap, you may not like it.

Watch!  And Enjoy!

(also, iTunes has the video available for download for free)

And...is it just me, or is Geek Rap getting more and more...prevalent? First MC Hawking, and now this!

General Gaming / Final Fantasy XII Demo Impressions
« on: November 23, 2005, 10:35:25 PM »
Even though I don't own a PS2, I still found myself buying Dragon Quest VIII earlier today...mainly for three reasons. One: At a certain gaming review site, they not only gave it a 9.0, but said that it can easily clock in at over 100 hours. 2: I've been dying for a hardcore RPG for a while.  And 3: The Final Fantasy XII demo.  I've been on the verge of buying a PS2 for years...and Final Fantasy XII was more than likley going to be a deciding factor in this.

And...I have to say....I'm gonna break down and buy a PS2.

At first, I was a little concerned about the newest in the FF series. "Simulating an MMORPG you say?  Returning to Ivalice for the THIRD TIME? The male lead being prettier than the female lead?"

Well...its not all that bad.  The battle system has been majorly tweaked so it "resembles" a MMORPG of sorts...but, I realized at its core, its still an ATB system like the previous FF games.  You walk up in the aggro range of the monster, and the battle starts (although you can start a battle outside of the aggro radius, if you so desire).  You tell your character to attack, and a little meter goes up, and once it's full they do whatever you told them too, kinda like ATB in reverse.  Now, the only thing I could say against it is that once you confirm you want to melee attack, your character will keep attacking.  Like, you hit attack once, the meter fills, Vaan attacks, and then the meter starts to fill again with no further action from you, and will continue to do so until you tell it otherwise.

However, you can cancel any command and change it out at any time...say, belay the attack order and use a potion.

There are also two modes...active and wait.  Wait bascially pauses the game when you open the command menu and gives you time to think, and active does what you'd think it does (namely, not wait).  I don't really have a preference between the two, although Active is more fun, I'd say.

The other two characters in your party do pretty well by themselves.  They attack what you attack (mostly), heal you when you need to be healed (mostly), and can heal themsevles when they need it (mostly).  You can butt in and give them a command at any time you wish, but they do pretty well by themselves.

All in all...I liked it.  The measly two "missions" just barely whetted my appetite, and I found myself playing throught the demos a second time.  And, I'll probably play them a third when I go back to my friends house.

But, it may not be for everyone.  Tycho at PA had some strong words against it, in his "If you don't like what I like, you must be broken" way of speaking...and actually thats all I've heard about it from elsewhere.

What are your thoughts? Also, if anyone else has played it, I'd like to hear your impressions as well.

General Chat / Densha Otoko!
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:49:59 AM »
I was just curious if any of you PGC'ers have seen this wonderful show.

I just finished watching "Another ending" and I had to go gush somewhere.

For the "uninitiated", Densha Otoko is a japanese dorama roughly based on a true story where a hopeless otaku saves a girl from a drunk on the subway, and with the help of a singles men board on the net, he tries to start a relationship.  Its very cute, funny, and heartwarming, and I'd recommend you pick it up if you can.

Well, by pick it up, I mean torrent.

At any rate...has anyone else gotten strength from Densha?

So, these very talented and awesome guys orchestrate videogame music with a combination of vocal harmonization and ukelele's. Is that how you spell it? Anyways, I recommend the Two Zelda tracks and the Mario Kart one.

But, being the diverse crowd you are, you may have actually played some of those other games, so whatever.
