I saw posters for this when I recently went to a Mariners game. I had no clue that it existed, or what the heck it did, but it sounds kind of cool. Does the DS have the wireless range needed for such a system to work well? No doubt there must be many signal broadcast locations throughout the stadium.

TalkBack / RE:Details on First Spielberg Wii Game Uncovered
« on: July 07, 2007, 07:04:57 PM »
We definitely need more information, but I think that it's great that Spielberg is trying out a new art form. I love that he created the concept with families in mind, since its always fun when your non-gaming friends/relatives can join in.

Why would you skip playing the most the innovative Zelda game since Ocarina of Time?!

UncleBob: Look at the box some more. If I recall, there might have been a "game selection subject to change" type message somewhere.

This game has me terribly excited. I wish Nintendo (and other developers) would do more classic-style games. New Super Mario Bros. was a good start, but I want more. Two-dimensional classic-style games and newer 3D games have a completely different feel--each with their own benefits--and neither should be ignored.

Much like the Wii remote does not completely replace the old-style controller (e.g., for fighting games), 3D does not completely replace 2D. I guess what I am really saying here is "Thanks, Konami".

But the inviting, easy-to-understand story and ease of control will attract casual and younger players who might be new to Zelda games.

Emphasis mine.

After reading that, I was disappointed that they may be "dumbing down" the story to make it newcomer friendly. After the roller coaster that was Twilight Princess (in terms of story, that is) I am ready for a simpler story.

Of course, you have to say "YES" to get in.

Agreed except I liked the Wind Waker ending. The cement imprisonment of Ganondorf and the flooding over Hyrule was pretty epic. The bubbles on the credits screen where a little cheesy, but I love the music medley that played.

Link's Awakening had a pretty good (if not somewhat confusing) ending too.

Interlace over component cables? Isn't that a step down? Can anyone confirm that the games previously used progressive scan over component? Were there any problems?

Didn't Nintendo essentially brag about how cheap the Wii was when the 250 USD price announcement was made? I would be very surprised if they only made $30 per unit initially.

TalkBack / RE:Smash Bros. Brawl Will Support Four Control Types
« on: June 09, 2007, 10:34:01 AM »
I hope Nintendo releases a firmware update that lets us control the Wii with a GameCube controller. Since such a major title has GameCube controller support, it would be nice if we could start the game without having to use a Wii controller to select the disc channel.

Not very major, but a nice touch.

Some people might complain about how this will confuse the player, but this is really what we always ask for Nintendo (and 3rd parties) to do: give us options! Experiment with new control schemes, but let us revert back to the old if we find it most comfortable. I would hate to see Smash Bros. be handicapped by a novel control scheme that simply didn't work.

If only Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz included a traditional control scheme...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS Relay Channel?
« on: June 02, 2007, 05:22:48 PM »
WEP encryption is weak. Really, one should avoid using it whenever possible and instead use WPA or better.

MAC address filtering is not a substitute for good encryption--your data can still be read by snoopers. Plus, MAC addresses can be spoofed.

A DS relay channel, or something like it, would be great for those of us who want to play DS games online from time to time, but are not willing to compromise the security of our wireless network.

TalkBack / RE:Harrison Talks Wii
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:08:26 PM »
Harrison's comment about the Wii Sports pack-in made me think: will Nintendo ever stop bundling Wii Sports? At this point, the game is an integral part of the initial Wii experience. For many people, it is the first Wii game that they played--and the one that convinced them to purchase the system. There are arguably better overall games for Wii, but none that so clearly represent Nintendo's direction this generation, nor any that appeal so much to non-gamers.

Could any other game replace that?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:N64 Games that use the expansion pack
« on: May 28, 2007, 02:25:56 PM »
The Zelda: Collector's Edition compilation had Majora's Mask on it, so Nintendo already has made a compatible emulator. As far as I know, all they have to do is have the emulator allocate more memory to whatever game is being run.

The Wikipedia article on the Expansion Pak has a list of games that use/require it.

From the interview in question:

Game will feature no more than 50 characters. (Gee, thanks a lot. I didn’t know that already </sarcasm>)

The unbolded text is the blog author's commentary. Doesn't seem like customary behavior after receiving the privilege of an exclusive interview.

I'm going to refine those rules further, since I don't want to see this thread die:

A maximum of 3 captions in the queue at any given time, each coming from different users.

If Bill takes longer than three or four days, it is safe to admit defeat.

It has happened before.

I actually got something like this at a local Goodwill location for a few dollars. Mine doesn't have a cartridge port, but it does have a (cruddy) light gun. The whole system is pretty buggy. Still, it plays a game of Super Mario Bros. and Tetris just fine.

Happens to me quite a bit. WiiConnect24 has always been on, but I've only had an SD card for a couple months. I haven't noticed a difference in how long the wait is based on SD card usage (then again, I haven't played the Wii much lately -- still need to get Super Paper Mario).

I really hope they fix it. I have had 5-minute delays. They're not fun.

PowerShell seems pretty interesting. On one hand, the idea of using objects seems a lot cleaner than passing text around on Unix, but then again text is easy to work with. If I need something more complicated, I use Perl for scripting.

I wouldn't mind a simple standard for Unix where data could be passed in "tables" as a midpoint between text and full-on objects. For example, the "ps" command could optionally give its output in a table form to make accessing certain process information easier (i.e., select the PID of all processes owned by root). XML could fit something like that pretty well.

Yes, there is an upgrade from 2.0U to 2.2U. Why must every upgrade finish with a message about parental controls?

I know that Nintendo wants to send the message that the DS is "where it's at" now, but I would still love for these games to come to the US. Have other regions got the games?

This game in particular sounds pretty neat. I did not even know that the GBA's single speaker could accomplish enough of a seperation effect to make this type of game possible.

What prevents you from playing the game? I mean, when you try to start up the game, what happens?

Any TV should be fine for playing the game. The component cables only allow you to play games that support progressive scan in that mode. Unless you hold down "B" while starting the game, it will run in the normal mode.
