I love Reggie. I mean, the "Mii Too" comment from Nintendo was just a cheap shot (that some would argue isn't true). This is just we-are-better-than-you gold.

Anything that makes Wii into a more social and connected system is a Good Thing in my book. Hearing Miyamoto's stories about his wife made me realize just how important the social aspect is to non-gamers. That's where I see Nintendo going with their online system: more social games and channels like Everybody Votes.

I wonder if this will be an upgrade to the Mii Channel. That would make the most sense. Just add a button underneath "Wii Parade" to "Show Off Mii" or whatever they want to call it.

Yeah it is interesting that the Thwomp area has a normal-looking sky.

The only non-Nintendo system I have right now is a Sega Saturn (only because it came my way and I was not going to turn it down). If my financial status permitted, I would buy many classic systems, a PS2, and an Xbox 360. Of course I want to play the best games that I can. For me, Nintendo systems offer a greater selection of appealing games than any of their competitors, so they are the default choice.

I must admit that I felt really torn when considering an Xbox purchase about 4 years ago. I felt that I was betraying Nintendo after all these years. I was 11 at the time, so I had been playing Nintendo for a good 6 or 7 years. Eventually, I bought the system, but then sold it a couple years later. I only owned a couple games and never bought mega hits like Halo. I didn't follow the Xbox scene closely and few games captivated my interest. Now, I want an Xbox 360. Not desperately, but enough so that I would buy one if an excess of money came my way.

The moral of this story is that, although I feel a certain amount of loyalty to Nintendo, I can not let that stop me from exploring other options. You shouldn't either.

Super Paper Mario also looks awesome. It is a great time for a Nintendo fan. I know I am speaking like a fanboy right now, but I am really excited for Nintendo lately. The most interesting thing I have seen on the other systems is LittleBigWorld and TMNT on the Xbox Live Arcade. These two Mario titles excite me far more.

Just yesterday, I was thinking how great LittleBigWorld's graphics were--and they are pretty--but I actually prefer the look of Super Paper Mario. What also excites me about Super Paper Mario is that it looks like a game that could be developed with a relatively small budget. Sometimes I consider a career in the video game industry and it is good to know that not all games have to be a massive high-definition 3D experience developed with multi-million dollar budgets.

Edit: LittleBigPlanet

This game will be so amazing. When the camera zoomed out and showed the various bodies of land, including the capsule that Mario bursts out of, it pretty much sealed the deal for me. I can't explain it, but this game is just really exciting. I know this will be a game that will be cherished for years to come.

I am watching a video of the keynote. Good stuff.

I think that LittleBigPlanet looks to be a pretty fun game overall. Does it look as fun as, say, a Mario platformer to me? No, but the physics of the game make it feel a lot more lively than traditional platformers. The graphics definitely are good looking. If it was on Wii, I would buy it. Unfortunately, the PS3 price tag almost makes it intangible for me. With the Xbox 360, if I see a good game for the system, I would actually consider buying a system some day. With the PS3, the thought doesn't enter my mind. The price is so unrealistic that I don't even consider a purchase. Even if I did have a job, the price would be a major deterrent.

Moral of the story? Expensive consoles mean less buyers, which ultimately means the hard work of game developers reaches a smaller audience. It is a lose-lose situation.

It will probably be a big hit with some people, but I can't see it is a major system seller. The consensus seems to be that this is similar to Second Life in many ways--a game which I have not played. That is hardly worth a $600 purchase. Still, I'm sure people who already own or plan to buy a PS3 will enjoy this, so that's good.

I personally think it looks rather bland. I only looked at some screen shots, but it doesn't compel me to play it. Same story with Second Life, The Sims, or any other virtual hub or life simulation games. Hopefully, Nintendo will put a lot of community aspects into Animal Crossing because I see that as being a more interesting game. Although Nintendo's online policies would probably prevent anything like this from reaching the Wii.

I found one quote rather interesting from the Games Radar page.
Quote

...the Home Theater [is] a public spot that displays video files on massive screens, in full 3D theaters, and aims to add a social aspect to watching movies online.

How many people would pay to watch movies on the PS3? Do you pay per-showing? Exactly how "public" are we talking here?

I assume that one can not share their own movies with others (the MPAA would flip). So you pay to watch a movie and in the middle of it you get chat bubbles popping up saying "lame", "I think I know what will happen next!", and "hawt". I am not a movie person at all, but that seems like a sub-optimal way to enjoy a film.

I think it's time you left these forums.

Yeah, I should have been more clear about that.

Nintendo says the transmission is secure, so you just have to give them the benefit of the doubt. (Or use a packet sniffer )

Nintendo claims that it is: read the security information they provide at the credit card entry screen. That being said, you should already have strong encryption to your router (WPA is preferred to WEP). From there, I would think Nintendo uses additional encryption (like SSL) so that even if your connection was being listened to, the data would unreadable.

I can not personally guarantee the transmission is 100% secure, but I have trusted Nintendo enough to use it twice myself.

It really is. I mean, I don't even play Lemmings often anymore and it is hardly my favorite game series, but I did have quite a bit of fun with it back in the day. To me, Sony's exclusive rights to Lemmings is worse than EA's exclusive rights to the NFL. Exclusive rights in general are rarely good for the customer.

I think you suggested that idea before MJR, but I still love it. Lemmings is great, I want it on a Nintendo system (post SNES-era).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo Power makes a funny?
« on: March 02, 2007, 06:33:08 PM »
That's kind of funny. I always like it when Nintendo makes little jabs toward the competition. Overall, I like the attitude of humility among the bigwigs (Reggie being the main exception to that), but a little humor never hurts.

I really don't like Sony. Here's a short list of ideas they have "borrowed" from others since the PS/N64 generation...

Motion sensing
Achievement points
Console-wide avatars
Analog sticks
Rumble pack

I guess analog sticks can be considered a natural progression of technology, not a radical new direction, but I am trying to make the point that Sony never seems to the driving force of the industry. If anyone would like to point out original ideas from Sony, I would truly like to hear them. The only thing I can think of now is the EyeToy. Even though the Dreamcast did have the Dreameye in Japan, it didn't play any games, making the EyeToy is the best use of a webcam for video games so far.

200X?! By then MegaMan will have to save the day from Dr. W.

I really did enjoy the camera in Wind Waker. (I too did camera tricks to keep myself interested while sailing.) I learned to live without it in Twilight Princess, but I did miss it a little bit.

Oh man. I must remember to check this when I get home from school tomorrow then use any means possible to get to BestBuy (assuming someone here has confirmed the deal). I would love a copy of Four Swords Adventures.

If the next Game Boy (or DS) ran any of the Virtual Console systems, it would be a massive success. Come on, who wouldn't lay down a few bucks to play their NES favorites on the go?

I am hesitant to buy games for the Virtual Console if I own the original system and they are readibly availible, but higher resolution is pretty tempting for Ocarina of Time. I expect people to come back here and talk about their experiences (controls, graphics, etc.) after they buy it. Do not let me down.

General Gaming / RE: Sega Saturn score!
« on: February 22, 2007, 06:14:27 PM »
I accept your challenge.

Unfortunately, it did not come with a video cable. Fortunately, they are cheap on eBay. It came with 3 controllers: 2 of the original style, 1 with the analog stick. No game was included, but it does have a GameShark. There is also one controller extension cable. The system itself is the first model (apparently there were two designs with slightly different looks). So eventually I will at least pick up a video cable and NiGHTS Into Dreams.

Interesting idea with the remotes, but I wonder if it is possible. As far as I know, after like 5 or 10 minutes of inactivity, the remote shuts itself down. Unless the system can activate nearby remotes by itself, which I doubt, it wouldn't work.

Actually, the system might be responsible for shutting down the remotes when they are inactive. Either way, I wonder if the system can re-enable them.

125
UncleBob, that is the reason I opted to get an original SNES instead of the remodeled one (although I absolutely love the SNES 2.0 look), but I'm sure you already have an original system. Although I thought I came across a mod before, all I could find is this incomplete effort.
