Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamespot Zelda Review
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:49:06 AM »
It wasn't contradictory.  It was my expressing that I disagreed with the review, which having my own opinion, I'm within my rights to do.

As for your opinion on what a review should do, you are welcome to it as well, but I definitely disagree.  A review is what one person thinks about a thing.  Yes, they use their position to either encourage or discourage your own consumption, but that doesn't mean that the point of the review is to do that, only that it is a byproduct.

I think were you're confused is that you're assuming that because reviews influence purchases, that influencing purchases is the reason for the review.  It's not.  The reason for the review is to sell advertising, and to encourage people to read the review (and see the advertising).  In fact, if the review is at all controversial, so much the better (that's the Ebert Theorem).

You don't need to reserve, unless you MUST have one on Day One.  Nintendo will have consistently large shipments throughout the end of the year and beyond.

I like it.  Hearing (and feeling) when it's your turn when playing Wii Bowling or the mini games in Super Monkey Ball is helpful.  I've even come to enjoy it in Zelda.  It is awfully loud by default, but I think if you turn it down a bit, you'll get used to it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii - Flat or, Standing up?
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:18:53 AM »
Started off standing up on the floor while I sort of hacked things together to make it work.  Now, it's horizontal in my entertainment center, mounting my Xbox 360.

Sorry Mr. Jack, but that quote from Wikipedia proves you wrong.  No where in that quote does it say that the review needs to be objective, rather than subjective.  Reviews are opinion based, as they SHOULD be.  Why?  Because everyone has a different perspective, and perspective colors everything we do.  If reviews were objective and non-biased, every review would be the same, so what's the point?

That said, the review at GameSpot was an absolute travesty.

The only mini game that I've found to be worth the time so far is Monkey Darts.  I'm incredibly disappointed, and am trying to figure out how you could screw up something that was as fun as Monkey Target.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii S-Video Cables aka "NINTENDO PHAIL REPORT"

At the risk of angering the forum gods (I am but a mere demi-god now), I posted this in the component cable thread.

I was at Nintendo's Redmond HQ today. They only had a total of 30 Component Cables for employees, and those were gone almost instantly. No word on an S-Video cable (which I really need). No one said they weren't making one, just that it wasn't available.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Fred Meyer loves the Wii
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:38:02 AM »
Myself and several of my friends from GearLive.com will be at the Ballard (Seattle) Fred Meyer tomorrow night.  I was supposed to have my Wii today, but fate conspired against me.  Instead, all I have is a Wiimote, Nunchuk and Zelda ... and nothing to play them on.

Oh, and a nifty white Wii hat.

Edit: I can also verify that in addition to Ballard, the Totem Lake (Kirkland) Fred Meyer is also doing a Midnight opening.  Supposedly six more stores in Washington, but I can't remember which.  Supposedly, Nintendo is putting out a Media Alert today.

I'll report back here with impressions. I'm dying to play me some Wii.

I may got to the one in Seattle, I do have tickets but I also have class during that time so I may end up selling them!

Since when is there a show in Seattle?  I thought it was only in Spokane?

Edit: I'll be damned ... they added a Seattle date.  I might get my hands on the Wii after all.

God, I saw that shot of "Soccer Mom", and the following scene flashed in my head ...

Kids come home from school, and Mom is looking a little disheveled, and slightly out of breath.  "Oh, hey kids ... why don't you run up stairs and do your homework, huh?"  "But we wanted to play Nintendo!"  "Not now, do your homework first."  "Mom?  What were you doing when we got home?"  "Me?  Oh nothing, just ... playing with the Wii.  Oh, and wash your hands before you come down.  You kids are getting these controllers all ... sticky."

And ... scene.

You aren't really familiar with Miyamoto's work, are you?    The entire game design ethic at Nintendo is built around trial and error.  Every game starts as a tiny concept that they build on.  Most of their games get this same treatment until the game is finished.  Your only argument seems to be that the GameCube version isn't having the same refinements made to it.  I'd argue that it probably is, you just aren't hearing about them since all the focus is on Wii.

Ah. That makes more sense.

Actually, it's the one thing that drove me crazy about the "Play 'n' Charge" kit for the 360.  If the batteries started running low, I could plug it into the 360 and keep playing.  OK, but as soon as I turn off the 360 ... the batteries stop charging.  Of course, since the Wii never really shuts down, this could be a non-issue.

Coincidentally, my 360 PnC cable went bad on me, and I ended up getting a stand-alone charger, and that worked better.

Anyway, what do you do if you have more than one controller to charge?  IIRC, the Wii only has ONE USB port.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Guitar. Hero. Wii.
« on: September 21, 2006, 05:24:38 AM »
If you guys think that sounds fun, you should import Band Bros. for the DS.

As much fun as I think Guitar Hero could be on Wii, I'd probably get the Xbox 360 version instead.  In fact, in just about any case where a game is being ported without significant Wii enhancements, I'll probably opt for the Xbox 360 version.  Why?  ACHIEVEMENTS.  I can't live without them.

First, I don't really understand how it would be easier to simply flip the entire game as opposed to only flipping the character models.  I suppose that for the same reasons I mentioned before about not having a left-handed option ... it minimizes the testing and QA needed.

Second, I don't understand why so many of you (by you, I mean "nerds on the internet") are talking about being outraged.  You haven't played the game yet, so I don't see how it should matter to anyone.

Hold on ... *reads forum tagline again* ... never mind, carry on.

You would be amazed how many people think that, one common argument (which spawned my response) is that people will see a Wii but will think for 50$ you can get better graphics (Specifically HD), somehow forgetting that Wii has that XBox 360 does not. I'm sure this thinking would also die out when they realize they need to spend 40$ for a component cable, 40$ for a memory card, and another 50-60$ for a game.

The component cable is included with the Core.  It also has composite hookups.  I'm fairly certain it's the only cable Microsoft makes, aside from the VGA and S-Video cables.

I'd also argue that you can't include the game prices, since you could get something like Geometry Wars for $5.

"changing it from a right handed game into a left handed game may cause bugs and be difficult, its not as easy as flipping an x axis"

the problem with that logic is..they just did the opposite..changing it from a left handed game into a right handed game. I'm betting there will be an option...as there is in most DS games.

You definitely should have read all of the posts.  By flipping the character models, you still only have ONE option to test in the game, because it's the default option.  If you offer the option to flip handedness on the fly, you now have two options you have to test for, possibly even more, depending.

For example, the fishing game: In a right-handed configuration, everything the Wiimote does would be the same in a left-handed configuration.  However, if it were possible to hold the Nunchuk in your right hand, you would now have to account for the reeling action with two motions ... clockwise (right handed) and counter-clockwise (left handed).  (As a small aside, is it even possible to get a left-handed fishing pole?  I don't think I've ever seen one.)

In fact, for the most part, it's that Nunchuk that causes all the problems.  Using it like a shield, for instance.  A right-handed person would move it up and to the left to put the shield in front of their face.  A left-handed person brings it up, but to the right.  For this example, you would have to reverse just the y-axis, but in the fishing example, because of the circular motion, both poles need to be reversed.

Why the hell is this even a debate?  The option Nintendo has chosen gives the best of all possible worlds, and is the EXACT SAME solution Microsoft chose for the Xbox 360.

You want to use standard AA batteries?  Go ahead.
You want to use rechargeable batteries?  Go for it.

Hell, Nintendo will probably even offer their own rechargeables.  But seriously, if this isn't a problem for the Xbox 360, why is it going to be a problem for Nintendo?

Personally, I have something like 20 AA NiMH batteries of capacities ranging from 1600-2100 MAh (milliamp hours), and a 15 minute charger.  For emergencies, I have a pack of something like 20 AA batteries that I got from Home Depot for under $10.  (Contrary to popular belief, there is little difference between generic and brand name batteries ... as the brand names are frequently the ones who make the generics!)  When I was having battery problems on my Xbox 360 wireless controller (bad Play 'n' Charge cable), I dropped in a pair of alkalines.

Seriously, what exactly is the debate here?  When did it become a bad thing to offer consumers a choice?

Forgot all about that pesky Nunchuk there, didn't you?  If you're holding the Wiimote in your left hand, where does the Nunchuk go?  It's not designed to be used in either hand ... it's pretty might a left-only device.

Oh, and they didn't mirror the entire world.  That would screw up the strategy guides and gameplay counselors to no end.  No, they just flipped the character models, which is pretty easy.

I could have sworn I saw updated specs last week.  I'll have to dig around and see if I can find them.  Not that the specs matter much anyway.

Here's a link to some estimates of how much you'll be able to store in the Wii's internal memory.

But here's the good stuff.

"Seven hundred and fifty dollars (USD), 25 N64 games, 31 SNES games, 50 NES games, 376Mb!"

"How to show Wii to Nintendo-haters on Day One?"

Shove a Wii-mote up their ass and say, "Dance, b!tch."

Seriously, though ... I think Wii Sports is all it'll take, and perhaps Madden.
