General Gaming / E3 2003 Floor Space?
« on: February 11, 2003, 07:50:45 PM »
Quote

Nintendo apparantly is taking up two levels of one of the halls, and same with Microsoft.

BULL.  Everyt year, Nintendo has had the exact same space, in the exact same location.  What you seem to be mistaking for "two levels" is the fact that the second level of that area is just open air surrounded by offices, so techincally, Nintendo's booth extends up to that level.  But no one else sees it that way.  By that reckoning, every one in both South and West halls would have "two levels" of space.

General Gaming / Nokia's new handheld a gba killer
« on: February 11, 2003, 12:22:19 PM »
There's just one main problem here ... something that the folks at Nokia seem to have forgotten.  The people who are playing games on their cell phones are playing them as a momentary diversion, between business meetings (ok, sometimes DURING), on the bus, etc.  These are places and times where it's more convenient to use your cell phone to play a simple game than your GBA.  For anyone that really enjoys games, the GBA is always the better option for any prolonged gaming.

They've added colors, graphics, etc. to these simple games trying to get a piece of the handheld gaming market Nintendo is making so much money with.  Unfortunately, they're also making the "simple" games more complex, and less the sort of thing you could play between meetings or on a bus.  The cell phone used to be the "pick up and play" sort of game machine for people who don't play games, and they're losing that focus.  As a result, it's entirely possible they'll start losing market to other cell phone companies, or even to Nintendo itself.

NWR Feedback / I thought that the Forums were out of Beta

Technically, they're still in Beta ... it's just an "open" Beta.  We'll be in beta until our e-mail problems are completely solved.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo is No#1...
« on: February 11, 2003, 06:08:06 AM »
It's pretty much a well-known fact that the Xbox has more RAW graphical power than GameCube does.  However, due to some of the Xbox's bottlenecks in it's architecture, the GameCube ends up VERY close.  GameCube was designed in such a way as to eliminate as many of the bottlenecks as they could, and end up with a system where every part was necessary and exactly what was needed.  Xbox was designed by throwing parts as fast as they could get into a box, and seeing how much power they would end up with.  It's PC based, and the PC is unfortunately a very inefficient design.

Don't get me wrong, the Xbox has a lot of potential, and there's nothing really inherently bad about the box as it stands.  But you just have to marvel at how much Nintendo accomplished with so little.

And due to PGC's previous rules on avatar sizes, bandwidth theft would probably not be that great of an issue, at least in the sense of the impact of the offenders.

That's about as false an assumption as one could make.  Even a small, under 20K avatar can cause a huge bandwidth problem when it's downloaded by thousands of users.  Remember, just because there's only 1100 people registered here, anyone can VIEW the forums without posting.

As for off-site avatars, I've explained that quite thoroughly now ... FuseTalk doesn't support it.  Period.  I can try to hack in something, but there is no way for me to just turn it on.  And right now, I have much larger fish to fry.

Nintendo Gaming / My Theory On Nintendo In The Modern World
« on: February 10, 2003, 11:48:03 AM »
I've said it before, and I think it bears repeating.  It is not Nintendo that has changed or is losing touch.  It's the gamers who are growing up and developing different tastes and are no longer in Nintendo's target market.  It is impossible for a company to continue to cater to an audience that is growing up and maturing.  Those of you wonder why Nintendo is no longer making the games you want to play need to realize that it's more a function of your changing point of view than anything Nintendo is doing different.

Nintendo Gaming / Do lack of sports game matter?
« on: February 10, 2003, 08:27:36 AM »
Historically, the console with the widest selection of sports titles has usually been the one to sell the best.  It's anecdotal evidence at best, but that's probably the reason people are so concerned.  I'm not a big sports game fan myself, but having the option will usually sell more consoles than having not.  Losing an entire range of sports titles is never a good thing ... even if they weren't very good.

All part of our troubleshooting process.  We've got problems on the new server that we've just about got tracked down.  Thanks for being patient with us.

NWR Feedback / Main site not working?
« on: February 08, 2003, 12:36:48 PM »
We've been having periodic crashes today that we're in the process of trying to resolve.  While it may LOOK like one is working and not the other, it's probably just giving you cached files for the site you've already been to.

Please be patient.  I'm doing nothing today but work on the problem, and I hope to have it resolved before the end of today.

That's because the server crashed.

As evidenced by the message we have at the top of the forum, our mail server has been acting strangely, and I think that might have been what's causing people to not get passwords, and possibly behind the crashing of the server.  I'm working on it.

I'll look into your errors.

I haven't linked the Forums logo to the forums main page because if I were to do that, it would screw up the way the forums handle "unread" messages.  If you clicked that, it would reset your viewed messages and you'd have no idea what you'd missed.

As for the hyperlink tags, it would be a lot easier to use the link buttons to show you how to make the tags on your own.  That's why they're there.

NWR Feedback / The "Stealing from Other Sites Rule"

It's OK for you to cut and paste PGC content into the PGC Forums ONLY.  Same goes for linking images.

NWR Feedback / No Linking? Why Not?
« on: February 07, 2003, 10:08:17 PM »
Go read the rule again.  We never said anything about "no linking".  In fact, if you find something interesting at another website, we encourage you to link to it.  What we don't want you doing is directly linking to images or media files, and we don't want you cut 'n' pasting information from those sites.

Nintendo Gaming / Correct Chronological Order for Legend of Zelda???
« on: February 07, 2003, 02:05:39 PM »
Playing the game in chonological order isn't logical, Captain.

Seriously, play them in the order they were released.  It'll make more sense that way, not to mention it'll be more fun.

General Chat / Anyone else find this place slow?

You just need to make sure you're following the rules, MetalHead.  Your thread was a blatant Poll, which are highly frowned upon here.

NWR Feedback / Could we get a "Buy/Sell/Trade" board?
« on: February 07, 2003, 01:37:16 PM »
Ooooh, good point, Dan.

Yes, Moderators and Administrators have FULL access to the "private" message system, so don't think that because it says "private" that you can harrass others with it.  We can verify ANY reports of abuse very quickly, and take action just as fast.

Announcements / Faster? GOOD.
« on: February 07, 2003, 01:33:11 PM »
We've made a few tweaks to our server confirguration, including installing a compression utility to reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent out when you request a page.  If you've noticed that the server went from a slow crawl to practically being ON FIRE, that's the compression at work.  All modern 4.0+ version broswers should support the compression and those that don't are served uncompressed pages.  There shouldn't be any issues (aside from a small hiccup when the services were restarted), so if you notice anything out of the ordinary, feel free to send me a Private Message.

On a side note, this is going to make Planet GameCube as a whole significantly faster as well.  Enjoy!

OK, I've added an HTTP Compression utility to the server which should significantly speed things up for all of you.  If you have any problems, please let me know.  There might have been a small hiccup right as I was restarting the services, but it should be all good now.

General Chat / Anyone else find this place slow?
« on: February 07, 2003, 11:15:54 AM »
We're working on it.  I'm monitoring the server, and it's entirely network performance, so we're tweaking a few settings and what not to see what we can do to speed things up.  We've also got a few other things that will fall into place in a bit as well.  Now that we've opened them up, we're expecting it to be a little slow at first as everyone goes to get their accounts, but it'll pick back up once the initial rush is over.

TalkBack / Announcing the ALL NEW Planet GameCube Forums!
« on: February 07, 2003, 10:55:59 AM »
You asked for it, you got it!  We're now hosting our very own Forums!  Go get your new Forum account NOW!

It's been a long time in coming (back), but they're finally here.  We seem to have gotten some of the last little bugs worked out, and we're now ready to unleash <a href="http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums">our new Forums[/url] on the world!

The new Forums are different from ezBoard in many ways, so you're bound to be disoriented at first.  Make sure to take time to look around and read some of the posts before you jump into the fray ... many of your likely questions have already been answered.  Most importantly, make sure you read the Rules and the FAQ so that you're aware of what kinds of things will have your access removed.

We're still going to be making changes to the Forums as we come up with ideas, so be prepared for cool surprises and updates!
