TalkBack / WrestleMania XIX Intro Movie
« on: August 11, 2003, 11:57:47 AM »
THQ has sent over the final version of WrestleMania XIX, and we've captured the Intro Movie for you!

We've got the final code for WrestleMania XIX sitting here at the Seattle PGC office, and it's looking to be fantastic.  The game gets off to a great start with an intro package similar to the "Desire" spots that WWE would run that serve to explain that this isn't just a "rigged sport", but that it's a lot of hard work and determination that leads up to a huge show like WrestleMania.

The audio is taken from the promos for the WrestleMania XIX Pay-Per-View event, but the footage is from the live show.  When I mean the live show, I don't mean the broadcast, but there is footage here that was taken from Safeco Field, as THQ and WWE were having everything about the event documented not just for the game, but for a documentary that was being filmed.

Anyway, it's a great intro that captures the atmosphere and electricity of the Super Bowl of professional wrestling, and we've got it for you now in MPEG format.  Click the link below to go to our media downloader and get the file.

TalkBack / IDSA gets a name change
« on: July 21, 2003, 08:25:54 AM »
The folks behind everyone's favorite May expo change their name to the Entertainment Software Association

Even in the midst of fighting battles that seek to limit the sales of violent video games, the International Digital Software Association (IDSA) has undertaken a name change.  The organization will now be called the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), and has a new website at http://www.theesa.com.

This name change will not affect the company's goal of educating the media and the public about interactive entertainment, and representing the makers of video games, as well as putting on the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The ESA also helps defend copyright issues, and battles on the industry's behalf on tricky legal issues, like the recent Washington State House Resolution limiting the sales of games depicting violence against law enforcement officers.

If you're interested in learning more about the ESA, visit their website at http://www.theesa.com.

TalkBack / Viewtiful Joe Super Site is Live!
« on: July 10, 2003, 02:37:28 PM »
October is still months away, but Capcom's not waiting around.  Check out all the goodies!

Capcom has just opened their "Super Site" for their upcoming GameCube title Viewtiful Joe.  The site is themed around movies and a movie theatre, just like the game.

In addition to the game information, there is more content coming soon, like screensavers, web games, a contest, and more.  But to keep your Henshin-a-go-goin', you can grab Buddy Icons for AOL Instant Messenger.

Best of all, you can pre-order the game for $39.95 direct from Capcom, so you'll be sure you can snag a copy.  Remember, the game sold through it's first allotment in Japan, and you're not going to want to be stuck with that problem come October.  What are you waiting for?

TalkBack / Want to be a Happy Camper?
« on: June 23, 2003, 09:18:38 PM »
Nintendo has posted the info on this year's Camp Hyrule!

Every year, Nintendo holds a virtual "camp" for online gamers to get together and play mini-games and generally pal around in an informal setting.  They call it "Camp Hyrule", and it's usually a pretty good dose of fun.

Nintendo has updated it's Camp Hyrule website with the dates of registration, and the week of the camp itself.  Registration will take place July 29th through July 31st, with the camp taking place the week of August 11th.

So what happens at Camp Hyrule?  In general, you visit a flash "campsite" where some mystery needs to be solved, and is slowly uncovered over the course of the week.  In addition, you and the other members of your "cabin" will take part in contensts and games to earn points, with the best cabin getting a virtual merit badge of sorts.  But overall, it's basically a week-long chat event, with not only other gamers, but members of Nintendo's own Game Counselling staff as well.

Be sure to mark the dates on your calendar, because PGC is sure to be there.  After all, Rick and Mike S. need to defend their reigning champs status!

TalkBack / Game Boy Player Replacement Boot Discs
« on: June 23, 2003, 07:21:29 AM »
All of you who imported a Game Boy Player... your bet just paid off.  Nintendo's online store now has US Region Boot Discs!

Update: We've now had a chance to try the US Boot Disc on a modded GameCube and a Japanese Game Boy Player, and we're pleased to announce that as expected, it works flawlessly.

Sometimes, the ways of Nintendo confuse us ... like the decision to release the Game Boy Player in the US in only Jet Black.  This has caused the Player to be one of the hottest import items in a while, as the Player comes in four colors in Japan.

The only real "flaw" with the imported Player was the need for a region coded boot disc, which means if your GameCube didn't have a region mod (or Freeloader swap disc), you'd be out of luck.  Even so, switching regions or swapping discs is a hassle, however slight.

Never you fear, because Nintendo has started offering the Game Boy Player Boot Disc as a replacement item in their online store.  Simply choose "Parts, Accessories, and Manuals", then "Nintendo GameCube", then finally "Parts and Accessories" to find the replacement boot disc available for $15.00.  With $5.00 shipping, your total will come to $20.00.

Thanks to Anubis081883 for the tip!

TalkBack / Planet GameCube Server Upgrade
« on: May 29, 2003, 02:19:22 PM »
We're going to have some downtime tonight, but when we come back, we'll be faster than ever!

If you can read this message, then you're on our new server.  Everything appears to have gone smoothly, but there may be a few hiccups here and there as we check everything over.  The Forums are up and running, so go to it!

We're fairly unexpectedly having to move our server tonight, but there's good news as a result.  We'll be getting a fairly major server upgrade, basically doubling PGC's capacity.

Now for the bad news.  Both updates on PGC and use of the Forums will be temporarily suspended while the move takes place.  Our server will be down entirely while the database moves, and will be back up once the move is complete.  However, the Forums will remain offline, and we will not be updating again until the server move is complete.

Once the move is finished, you'll see a message right here letting you know.  Stay Tuned!

TalkBack / Done with your Demo Disc? That's what YOU thought!
« on: May 25, 2003, 10:21:05 AM »
We've found a silly little secret on Nintendo's Preview Disc that adds just a bit more gameplay ...

Just when you think it's safe to put that Preview Disc away, those wacky guys at Sega manage to give you another reason to dust it off.  (That is, if you've bothered putting it away instead of playing Viewtiful Joe!)

There is an extra playable "level" hidden in the Billy Hatcher demo, accessible if you hold down A as the game is loaded.  The "level" is layed out very similar to the normal one, but there are a few new objectives, and new enemies to watch out for.

To make sure you can get into it, launch the Billy Hatcher demo by hitting A at the "PRESS A TO PLAY" screen.  As the game is loading, press and HOLD the A Button again, and keep holding it until you've pressed "Start" to begin the Billy Hatcher Demo.  Don't let go of A until you're able to play.  It won't look much different at first, but once you get down the ramp, you'll see some key differences right away.

Enjoy!

TalkBack / Atari paid how much for "Enter The Matrix?"
« on: May 22, 2003, 04:29:51 PM »
Get all the morbid details on exactly what the Wachowski Bros. (and Warner Bros.) are getting paid.

It's scary, the kinds of information that you can get on the Internet.  "The Smoking Gun" website specializes in publishing information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, and it has published documents relating to the impending divorce of Larry Wachowski.  The documents have some interesting details on how much money the Wachowski brothers stand to gain from the videogames related to their Matrix franchises.  It doesn't (and shouldn't) matter much to gamers, but it's interesting in a "morbid curiousity" sense of the word.

Specifically, Interplay (the previous licensee) paid the Wachowskis a lump sum of a cool million dollars when the deal was signed.  When Infogrames (Atari) took over the deal, they paid out another million.  At the end of last year, they paid yet ANOTHER million.  Finally, another million and a half is due by the end of 2004.

4.5 Million of that 5.5 Million dollars are royalty advances, as both the Warner Bros. and the Wachowski's both stand to make a great deal of money on the net sales of the game (Warner getting 14% over net sales of 2.5 million units, and the Wachowskis getting 10% over 3 million units).

What isn't known is what happens to those royalty advancements should the game fail badly, but this certainly explains why Atari shipped 4 million units of the game at launch. They needed to recoup those payments, and it's easier to sell a game like this right at launch, before the buzz dies down.

Make sure to visit The Smoking Gun to see the actual documents.  And be afraid, that kind of detailed information could be available about ANY of you.

TalkBack / UbiSoft announces Splinter Cell Sequel
« on: May 21, 2003, 09:58:22 AM »
Sam Fisher returns with new missions...and online multiplayer?

Ubi Soft Entertainment confirmed today the next Splinter Cell installment, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, will be released in Q1 2004.

This sequel is being developed as a multiplatform title and will bring back more of the single-player intrigue that made the original game a bestseller. With exciting new action scenes and a strong cinematic feel, the player will experience new and even more realistic surroundings.

Pandora Tomorrow will the be the first stealth game ever to feature multiplayer online missions, allowing several players to simultaneously share Sam Fisher's shadowy world of espionage.

It's unknown at this point if the online features will be included in the GameCube version, or if the game is even slated for release on GameCube.  However, online is not out of the question, given the recent enlightening comments made by Satoru Iwata to USA Today.

NEW VALUE OFFER EXTENDS NINTENDO MOMENTUM

Worldwide Retail Program Combining Nintendo GameCube With New Game Boy Player Opens Vast Game Libraries

LOS ANGELES, May 15, 2003 – Nintendo today announces a new worldwide retail offer combining its Nintendo GameCube™ home console with the new Game Boy® Player. The combination allows players to enjoy more than 1,200 Game Boy games on the home TV screen, along with the full library of more than 300 Nintendo GameCube titles.

For a limited time, Nintendo will include Game Boy Player for the regular price of the Nintendo GameCube system. This offer will be available at retail on June 23 for an MSRP of $149.99 in the United States, and on June 20 for €199.99 in Europe.

"This offer builds on the incredible momentum generated by our Game Boy® Advance line, which has already sold 35 million systems worldwide," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America.  "Once we saw the enthusiastic reception given to the debut of Game Boy Player here on the show floor at the E3 trade show, it was an easy decision to move ahead with our plans to combine these two products."

The Game Boy Player is a platform less than an inch thick, which acts as a base for the Nintendo GameCube.  By simply inserting Game Boy cartridges into a slot in the Game Boy Player, consumers can use their Nintendo GameCube controller to direct action on the TV screen.

In North America, Nintendo is riding a wave of momentum generated by three dominating product launches this spring.  Game Boy Advance is the hottest selling system in the market; The Legend of Zelda®: The Wind Waker™ tops the console hit charts; and the combined Pokemon® Ruby and Pokemon® Sapphire are the top two selling titles in the portable game category.

TalkBack / GameCube Price to Plummet at E3?
« on: May 08, 2003, 07:13:41 AM »
Buzz in the retail sector is $50 price cuts across the board.  PGC breaks it down for you ...

Word is going around that the three major consoles are primed for a price cut, to be initiated at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in LA next week.  The rumors are so strong at this point that major retail chains such as GameStop are now turning away console sales, telling customers to wait until next week.  These same stores have signage in the back storeroom noting the price drop of the GameCube to $99, but they’ve been instructed to hold them until mid-May.  Other chains such as FYE are selling consoles with game bundles to keep demand strong over this week.

When asked about the price drop, one GameStop store manager, who asked to remain anonymous, told PGC that he was not sure if these signs were made in response to information from Nintendo, or in anticipation of what might be coming at E3.  “Last year, we were caught with our pants down, and had to make signs by hand.  I think they don’t want it to look like we don’t know what’s going on.”

Typically, Nintendo won’t initiate console price cuts on its own, but will make them in response to pressure from other companies cutting their prices.  Last year, Nintendo denied any plans to cut the price of the GameCube as late as three days before the eventual drop in price to $149 (from $199).  In fact, all three console makers denied a price drop, Sony denying it just a day before they cut their PlayStation 2 price to $199 in response to an equal cut by Microsoft on its Xbox.

There are also some other major chains, such as Circuit City, reporting that they are receiving overly large shipments of consoles, too large to be simple restock.  When this happened last year, it was the week before E3, when the last cuts were announced.  The console manufacturers typically ship additional consoles to cover the demand when a price drop is announced.  Nintendo is also publicly telling customers that inquire about the forthcoming Demo Disc that it will be packed in with GameCubes sold after May, which would be difficult to do without new consoles being shipped from the manufacturer.

The rumor of a $99 price is interesting, as it’s the same price that Nintendo’s recently launched Game Boy Advance SP is selling at.  Many feel that a cut to $129 would be more appropriate and wouldn’t cut into the sales of the cash cow handheld system.  At the same time, Nintendo is currently fighting for second place, and a price of under $100 would certainly spur sales of its home unit.  GameStop is expecting that if Nintendo cuts the price of the GameCube to $99, the Game Boy Advance SP could drop to $79.  Supplies of the popular redesign of Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance are still in short supply in many places, and a price cut on such a high demand item might seem to be ill-advised.

However, Nintendo has made price cuts on high-demand consoles before.  Their Nintendo 64 console was cut by $50 just three days before that console launched back in 1996.  Demand for the console was very high, riding on the very positive buzz on “Super Mario 64”, which would make Nintendo’s first entry into the 3D world.  It’s possible that Nintendo would cut the price on the Game Boy Advance SP simply to maintain its dominant position, even when many stores can’t get the item in stock.  GameStop has yet to ship any signage to its stores indicating a price cut for the GBA SP.

Planet GameCube will continue to follow this story, and we will have more information as it breaks.

TalkBack / Sega and Sammy Call it Quits

Next time, on "As The Console Turns" ...

In what has become a rather facinating process to watch, the impending merger between Sega and Sammy has been called off, as the two companies failed to meet on a couple of key terms.

Other names have popped up as being interested in merging with Sega in recent weeks, with Namco and EA being two major names.  Recent rumors point to Microsoft having an interest in acquiring the company as well.

We'll have more information as we receive it.

TalkBack / Music Star "Eve" to star in XIII
« on: May 07, 2003, 09:31:12 AM »
Yet another entertainment crossover as Eve goes from Music, to Movies, and now to Games.

UBI SOFT ENTERTAINMENT SIGNS MUSICIAN/ACTRESS EVE TO VOICE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED VIDEOGAME - XIII

Entertainment Trendsetter Eve Headlines as Major Jones in Stylish Action-Shooter

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - May 7, 2003 - Ubi Soft Entertainment, one of the world's top videogame publishers, today announced that one of music and film's hottest stars, Eve, will play the role of Major Jones in its highly anticipated action-shooter, XIII. XIII is an epic, conspiracy-driven thriller set in a highly stylized graphic-novel world. Eve will lend her voice talents to Major Jones, a beautiful yet mysterious character in the game, who helps players unravel clues behind the game's captivating story. XIII is planned to release on all platforms in Fall 2003.

"XIII is a true original - the most stylish game I have ever seen," said Eve. "When I saw the game, I knew I wanted to be involved. My character, Jones, is a strong, sexy female with attitude - my fans will easily relate her to me."

XIII is a stylish, first-person shooter thriller featuring a conspiracy of epic proportions. The game's cel-shaded graphics showcase its unique visual style, which pays homage to its comic roots. As a secret agent with complete amnesia, players unravel clues behind their true identity, while uncovering sinister plots against themselves, the U.S. government, and a mysterious presidential assassination. In XIII, Jones proves a valuable ally, as players will need to call upon her assistance in several gripping situations. This collaborative mode is just one of XIII's varied gameplay modes, which also include stealth, all-out action, and multiplayer.

Philadelphia-born, Eve took the recording industry by storm with her critically acclaimed platinum debut album, Eve: Ruff Ryder's First Lady. Her follow-up, Scorpion, featured numerous hit singles including the Grammy®-award winning, "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." Her current album, EVE-OLUTION, is burning up the charts with the #1 hit single, "Gangsta Loving," and her current single, "Satisfaction." In addition to her red-hot recording career, Eve also appeared in 2002's blockbuster movies, Barbershop and XXX, and is slated to star in her own UPN sitcom this fall. Eve will also star in THE WOODSMAN with Benjamin Bratt and Kevin Bacon, which starts production this month. XIII is the first videogame appearance for this multi-talented singer/songwriter/actress/trendsetter.

"Eve is the perfect person to play the role of Major Jones," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubi Soft Entertainment. "She has a combination of style, sexiness, and attitude - perfect attributes that describe the Jones character. Having a hot personality like Eve involved in the game enforces what the gaming community has been shouting all year - XIII is the coolest action-shooter in 2003."

"Our industry is now outpacing the Hollywood box office and by choosing Atari as our signature, we are demonstrating our commitment to this growth and our determination to take entertainment to the next level for gamers worldwide.

For several months, the Company has been using the Atari brand to publish great international hits developed in collaboration with the best talent in video games, including Neverwinter Nights from BioWare, several Unreal titles from Epic, Digital Extremes and Legend, Stuntman from Reflections, V-Rally from Eden, and the long awaited Enter The Matrix from Shiny Entertainment, which will debut on May 15, day and date with the film, The Matrix Reloaded. Effective immediately, these and all titles in the Company's extensive catalogue will be published under the Atari brand name.

"It's the perfect moment in our history to make this change," continued Mr. Bonnell. "Next week we'll be launching Enter The Matrix, an extraordinary game which has redefined the Hollywood license, setting a new standard for the convergence of games and films. The 'break the mold' approach we took with Enter The Matrix exemplifies the very personality Atari has always represented and captures the personality of our Company today, from game development to deal-making to partnerships and so on.

"Perhaps the greatest part of the Atari legacy is the recipe for creating games that capture an audience's imagination: creative ideas, the talent to bring them to life, and the passion to do so," stated Mr. Bonnell. "Those elements have never been more abundant within our Company than they are right now. We have the strongest line up of properties we have ever had, deep ties with some of the world's most talented game developers, and an excitement about the future that's palpable."

Enter The Matrix joins an Atari line up that features some of the world's most popular and recognizable entertainment franchises, including Terminator 3, Mission Impossible, Dragon Ball Z, Superman, and Godzilla; an array of critically and commercially acclaimed children's games, including the Backyard Sports series, Nickelodeon licenses, (Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues), and original characters such as Putt Putt, Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish and Spy Fox; products for the hard-core gamer such as Driver, Neverwinter Nights, Unreal, and Dungeons & Dragons; and titles for the mass entertainment audience, including the Civilization series and the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise.

Next week at the industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles (May 14-16), in addition to promoting its current roster of games, Atari plans to make several significant product announcements that further illustrate its commitment to bringing the most exciting new entertainment properties to the gaming audience, as well as transporting revered older titles into the future.

Mr. Bonnell added, "When we acquired GT Interactive in December 1999 and the Hasbro Interactive assets in January 2001, we had a two-part strategy: to provide the Company with an international distribution network and a large franchise catalogue with which we could achieve critical mass, and to establish an exclusive and strong brand name on which to raise our worldwide profile. With today's name change, we have those goals."

« on: May 06, 2003, 09:58:43 AM »
If you're short on cash, you can still pick up these bona-fide hits!

Nintendo has added five new titles to it's Player's Choice lineup.  Nintendo Player's Choice games are titles that have sold well since their release, and will now retail for only $29.99.

So which titles have been added?  Glad you asked.  Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader, Agent Under Fire, Spider-Man, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Resident Evil have all joined Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The changes should be immediate, but be sure to check your retailer.  While it will take a while for the updated box art to reach stores, retailers have "Player's Choice" stickers that they can put on the titles denoting their new status.

Announcements / Color Settings Locked
« on: May 05, 2003, 06:54:37 PM »
We've removed the ability for users to change their color settings, as some users were having problems viewing the site normally after changing the settings. It was always the intent to have this turned off, but a bug in the customization settings would have required us to lock you out of the page entirely, which has now been resolved.  As a result, everyone's color schemes have been set back to the Purple setting, as is the default.

We apologize for the inconvenience this caused, but we want to make sure that people can't change settings that may limit their ability to use the Forums. Thank you for your understanding.
