General Gaming / RE:Rumors Persist, Sony to Do Something Big
« on: May 06, 2006, 07:12:29 PM »
I believe they will use some laser sensor and/or camera that allows their game pad to have pointer control.  It isn't 3D motion sensing like Nintendo's remote, and it doesn't allow for control for each hand but it means their games will have have more advanced interface than 360 which may sway the dollars of many wondering whether they should get a 360 or PS3 to go with their Revolution, ****, I mean Wii.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Already in Production?

Nintendo Reps are a lying bunch of farts.  My cousin was told by one that DS would not be going online about a month before they unveiled their wifi plans.  Don't believe anything they say.

This rumor contradicts rumors that few third parties have final hardware, as in maybe just SquarEnix.

General Gaming / Rumors Persist, Sony to Do Something Big
« on: May 06, 2006, 04:32:59 PM »

I'm in a state of confusion; I continuously read that Sony is up to something. I've read some say what Sony is going to show at E3 is going to be recieved negatively for some reason; some say it is a controller redesign. How could that be recieved negatively? Maybe because at the core it means they have to change the hardware which pisses off already frustrated PS3 developers struggling to port their games between the CELL and 360's CPU. Beyond that it means they can't launch this year (cue Sony fanboy spontaneously combusting on E3 showroom floor). It also means they better watch their steps because I assume Nintendo is well protected by patents. Does Sony really want another Immersion style lawsuit (though on a scale much larger next time)? Will Sony be able to have any kind of rumble in any controller they have? Then you have to take in affect the Sony fan(boys) who have convinced themselves that what Nintendo is doing is lunacy, some will not like that Sony has made them look like fools. Also you have Nintendo fans and the general media who are going to say to Sony, "Do you think you can pull this $hit on us, you copied this from Nintendo and we're not going to ignore it." There are more to things to consider but these are the biggies I think.

I played Eternal Darkness last night; I think I'll play it again tonight.  I keep thinking about how cool this game would be on Revolution.  It would allow me to cast my spells faster I believe.

I found it funny that Mark would be the kind of person to call you up when they know you can't get online and tell you something like, "Nintendo is changing the name of Revolution to Snapper."

I've already read one out there rumor about getting a free Wii if you buy like four games.

I predict they will be remaking Super Mario Allstars with freakishly lifelike toon graphics, side scrolling, old school music, online multiplayer modes, new power ups, new worlds, and one handed remote control.  Oh yeah, and it will be one of the very few and astounding games using the big secret.

I predict we will see various third party characters in SSB, Bandai, Namco, Capcom, SNK, Sega, etc; who knows.

MS will show Halo 3 in target video form and noone will care because Nintendo will have Zelda, Mario, and Metroid playable at their booth; and they will be using a revolutionary interface.

Sony will have nothing exciting for their launch as always.

Nintendo truly only needs to deliver some killer app launch games that use the online well.

I also predict some MMO announcements.

I read this on Sam Kennedy's 1up blog

"I got a call from Mark about the name just as I was boarding a plane on thursday morning - at first, I thought he was totally yanking my chain, perhaps knowing I didn't have internet access to verify what he was saying. Then I realized he was completely serious (he was calling me to see if I could track down someone to get the news on the site asap), and my heart just sank. I made a call to Luke, fired off a quick text message to Karen, and started to think that this was it - this was Nintendo blowing its opportunity. I knew it was all too good to be true."

It is ironic that Nintendo changed the name of their system from Revolution to Wii and are now experiencing a fan revolt.

210
Sorry, I'll be buying a Revolution, I mean Wii and 360 despite the fact they are in a contest for worse name ever.

The question this nunchuck thing raises is, is it the "big" secret?  The name Wii suggests there is something more; something involving two eyes.

211
So the name Wii is so bad I have to go looking in the second page for this topic?  Did the discussion of the nunchuck's super powers move to another thread?

This would have been the biggest story of the year up until now, but you know.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Time Capsule Thread: Predict the future
« on: April 30, 2006, 09:27:30 PM »
I cannot predict the future until I have seen what everyone is doing at E3.  Right now my (optimistic) guesses would go:  PS3 US launch spring 07, Halo 3 fall 07, surprise software from Nintendo shown at E3, Nintendo stereoscopics at E3 (double-u-double-eye), Nintendo will offer complete access to their first party library downloads for a fee similar to Xbox LIVE, and Nintendo may shock everyone with their graphics at E3.  Final dev kits have been said to be at best four times the power of Xbox (but only Nintendo's peeps and SquarEnix have them).  Nintendo is surounded by fog right up until E3, who knows what they may unveil.

Unfortunately there are no profits in using my special gypsy prophet powers for the good of humanity.

No really, I only posted those quotes because I myself was suspicious of how close my ideas came to Nintendo's direction.

behold, I give you, the past

"What next generation really needs is depthening the gameplay experience. I want free standard online gaming. I believe the controller should become better at simulating our wants in the game. I would suggest a controller that is not only conforming and angled to fit the hands but also does more than any controller has ever done. A screen could become standard just as joysticks have. The left side of the pad would be your normal controller with a trigger and a shoulder button. Also a joypad and dpad. The right side should be a flight stick modified and attached to the left side with multiple functioning such as diagonal movements and turning."

"The camera used with the PS2 has given me lots of ideas for controlling basically any game with combat using the hands in the game. The system could use the camera in a next gen system to track the movement of the hand without the use of lightgun technology. Imagine detaching the flight joysick from the rest of the controller and it being the tracer point that the camera follows and uses in a game like Zelda or Soul Calibur allowing you to swing the sword. Perhaps this idea would work best if the controller for a proposed next gen game console were actually two controllers (one held in each hand) which the system tracks as the player moves his/her hands for sword swiping or punching or aiming a gun. This two sperate prongs idea could be used to allow for each prong to be used as a joystick with tilt technology giving the gamer two flight sticks instead of a camera tracing technology. What do you guys prefer?"

"Instead of hair and grass effects in games we will get dvd recorders. Instead of improved controllers we will get outrageous harddrives for what? MP3s? Pirating games? Cutting out the middle man and rentals with free demos for download instantly. Downloading old 2d games legally from say Nintendo or Sega?

The industry needs another revolution that can change the way we play not what we play on the machine."

I've always thought revolution described what Nintendo's next console was about

Are you afraid of asking people to play Nintendo?

I was just writing it too fast, sorry I was incoherrent.  I'm saying I'm not going to call it Wii; I won't be asking people to play with the Wii.  Instead I'm going to refer to it as the Nintendo and hope Nintendo doesn't plaster Wii in huge font all over the console.

I have a huge problem with the name because video games already have a major image problem.  One of my uncles already called it the f**k stick before the name Wii was announced.  The name helps the industry none in getting those types of non gamers to pick up the controller and give it a try.  And it is just embarrassing, if girls are over and they see it they are going to laugh and make jokes (even worse than the toyish looking GCN).

What happened is Nintendo had a lot of momentum going with gamers, the media, and developers.  People within the industry were becoming hyped about Nintendo's E3 conferance, gasp.  And Nintendo took the wind out of their sails on purpose a week before E3 (admitting they wanted to let the fans vent), and everyone with a drop of common sense is like, double-u-tee-eff.

1up is pointing out that they feel sorry for the fans trying to rationalize that the name is not only not negative but genius.

What it all means is the average gamer may not pick up Nintendo's console because of its absurd name, that ultimately translates to a smaller install base and less third party support.  That not only means fewer games but ghetto ports.  That is why the name does matter to me.  It will not stop me from buying it, but it will stop me from asking someone if they want to play it.  Noone wants to hear the words, "want to play with my Wii?"  I'm just going to call it the Nintendo.

"It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision."

I agree.

I'm still in a state of confusion, just not understanding why they would name a product this.  Why do they do this?  Why do they always do crap like use carts, case their console like a lunchbox, ignore online, try to force people to buy GBA connectivity, and now name their console something just uncomfortable.

Perrin Kaplan, I don't want to "feel" your Wii; you got me!
