NWR Forums Discord / SOS! Please help the wii dummie
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:23:54 PM »
Guys, please help, anybody, I am so new to this!

I have a new wii (Iv been told that it's soft moded but as I myself don't have a clue what "soft moded" means I can't check it)
I downloaded a few skins (Black, Blue, Red) and burned them first with Nero which didnt work, then with Imburn. Both with speed 4x on DVD+RWdiscs. The burning process was succeseful both times but my Wii was"unable to read the discs", so I copied it over to a SD card and put it in my Wii, but the Wii still wouldn't change color. So I printed the skins out on my printer and tried to cover the wii but it still doesn't look right. :'(

What do i do wrong? Am I supposed to hack the wii first or do something else?

Ive been trying to read up on the subject on the net but, aw boy! on all these forums it's NOT English anymore! THere are so many specific terms that im more lost than I was to start off with! :Q

Please! Can anybody explain to the dummie (akaa me) what the wii Im supposed to do. You'd REALLY help me.
THanks a lot

dummie ;)

Epic unveils Unreal Engine 3 for iPhone.

Quote
I got together with Mark Rein last week and he showed me an Unreal Engine 3 tech demo running on a 3rd generation iPod Touch. The same Unreal Engine 3 that powers Gears of War 2, running on an iPod Touch. The engine also works on the iPhone 3GS, and Mark tells me that we’ll see it on another mobile platform at CES (hmm...).

PC, Xbox360, PS3..... ummmm iPhone
WTF is going on here?

We start the thread off with a picture, and everyone types up a caption for it.
You can do as many captions as you can think of but no more than one per post.

After everyone has had their fill of "captioning" that specificpicture, we'll vote on who had the best caption, and that person getsto post the next pic for "captioning".

This is a test thread. It's also a poll for another thread.

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-L32X1 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV - $377 w/ Free Shipping

I basically got this TV for $130 after I sold my 3 year old Olevia (will miss that tv) for $250.
The picture quality is a little better since the Olevia was not as clear and seemed a little grainy in comparison. I now have 3 HDMI inputs hich should come in hand and also have the handy feature of selecting my input directly from the remote instead having to cycle through each one, I even get to name them(the inputs) for quick and easy reference.

This TV is a lot smaller size wise than the Olevia too, since the speakers aren't sticking out from the side. It matched my 21" monitor right next to it alot better now, since they are both shiny black plastic with no visible speaker (my TV and monitor are right next to each other).

The only advantage my Olevia has over my new Panasonic at this point (and I still need to do some tweaking) is on text in PC mode. You can read the text fine, but it's kinda faded as if it's not displaying properly or at the wrong resolution. It's looks fine inside of browser windows, but not on the browser itself or on the windows desktop. There are options on the PC itself that I still have to play with along with a few tweaks on the TV options, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

overall 4/5 stars

BBC's iPlayer coming to Wii - UK only

Quote
The BBC and Nintendo UK today unveil a new version of the popular BBC iPlayer on Nintendo's Wii.

First made available through the console's Internet Channel in April 2008, BBC iPlayer will now be available as a dedicated Wii Channel to provide Wii users with a new, richer experience of the BBC's TV and radio on-demand catch-up service.

The new Wii Channel is expected to be available from 12.01am on Wednesday 18 November.

Since BBC iPlayer first launched on the Nintendo Wii, there have been 900,000 requests for TV and radio programmes, and this new version of BBC iPlayer for Wii has been designed to deliver a better and higher quality experience, with a new full-screen user interface allowing the whole family to catch up on TV and radio together in the lounge.

We have just announced the release of a new version of BBC iPlayer for Nintendo Wii. The new version is a Flash based application using the newly released Video on Demand Framework (VODF) from Nintendo.* From 18 November you can find and install the BBC iPlayer application from the Wii shop at no cost. This version replaces the previous browser based version.

There were multiple challenges on this project. The design challenge was to make the iPlayer work on the television screen in a simple way. The team streamlined the user journeys. We have used the rumble feature on the controller to give feedback. A search feature allows you to find the content easily. The design team went through multiple iterations; user testing and got to what I believe is an experience you would like.

Nintendo Gaming / DSi LL Announced! *Pics Inside* 4.2" screens
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:39:58 PM »
Here is something for the NWR tip line, and it's gonna need their NWR Japanese correspondent to translate,

source: today's Nikkei morning post
http://blog.livedoor.jp/jim115/archives/51286284.html

according to the article,
-All specs and functions of the new model are the same as the current DSi, only difference is that the new screen is larger, now 4" (current DSi = 3.25")
-Retail price remains the same, 18900 yen
-To be released this year in Japan, outside of Japan release is still being discussed

My guess is that 3.25" upgrade (DS screen = 3") wasn't enough of a difference to push current DSPhat/DSLite owners into double dipping and upgrading to the DSi fast enough. Also 4" screens probably didn't cost much more to produce so it was almost like a free upgrade for Nintendo.

Only question I have is what is the new screen resolution?

PepsiCo iPhone app draws fire for stereotyping
Quote
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- PepsiCo Inc. is facing criticism for an iPhone application that promises to help men "score" with two dozen stereotypes of women by giving users pickup lines and a scoreboard to keep track of their conquests.

An apology by the company - which is using the app "Amp up before you score" to market its Amp energy drink - is igniting more online criticism. But the company is sticking by the app.

[...]

The application lets users select from stereotypes of women, like the "foreign exchange student" or "nerd" or "cougar." Then it offers possible pickup lines like, "Wasn't I in Space Academy with you?" for the nerd.

It also offers other hints, like links to world news for the foreign exchange student. For the "rebound girl" - who has just broken up with her boyfriend - it offers maps of local ice cream shops.

The app then lets users add women - along with name, date of the conquest and comments - to the user's "brag list," which can be shared online on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

[...]

The brouhaha generated new downloads on Wednesday and hundreds of new comments from users of the program, negative, positive and neutral.

"This is a great app for men, horrible app for women," wrote one user, who gave it a top rating of five stars. "Only download this app if you have been around the block a few times with different types of women."

Quotes from the app

I don't have an insidious bone in my body. Well, that's not true.

Your mouth says, "Shields up!", but your eyes say, 'A hull breach is imminent."

Someone please download this app from the app store and post some of the more hilarious pick up lines.

General Chat / The HALLOWEEN "Scary" Movie Watchlist
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:20:05 PM »
There are 20 days left before Halloween and my Netflix queue is loaded with all sorts of movies to watch, but I want to know what are all the BEST and NEWEST scary/fun/horror/gory movies to watch around this time of year.

I'm gonna start this list with a movie from 2007 that just got released on DVD this past Tuesday.

Trick 'r Treat
A fun horror movie with a few faces you might recognize, like Brian Cox & Anna Paquin. Think more along the lines of Tales from the Crypt/Creepshow than movies like Halloween since this one has several separate story lines that are all intertwined with the overarching theme of "It's Halloween" and there traditions that must carry on.

Halloween
I'll just go ahead and get this one out of the way. We all know who Michael Myers is, and I'm sure that most of us have seen atleast one of the movies in the series or the most recent Rob Zombie remake. This is a Halloween Classic, and set the bar for many movies to follow, so if you haven't seen it yet, then what are you waiting for.

Nightmare on Elm Street
Another scary classic series following Freddy Krueger as he haunts the nightmares of those that fear him. This is also getting a remake pretty soon, but I think the original is fine just the way it is. This was probably the only movie I've ever seen that actually scared me long after I watched it, and that makes it perfect for a Halloween viewing.

Paranormal Activity
This movie is very creepy and just now hitting theaters around the country. A couple finds out that their house is occupied by more than just the 2 of them. The movie is filmed entirely(?) from the perspective of their own camera as they are trying to prove to themselves that the house is haunted. You like to be scared, go watch it.

Kids find Nintendo yummier than Oreos, M&Ms

Quote
Kids may gobble up junk food, but it seems they love playing with Nintendo devices even more.

Out of the 100 most loved brands for America's children and tweens, the Nintendo Wii and DS scored the first and second spots, according to a report by research firm Smarty Pants.

The survey "Young Love" found that even tempting snacks like Oreos and M&Ms trailed behind the Nintendo gear, taking the third and fifth spots in the list, respectively. Other techie items loved by 6- to 12-year-olds included the iPod at number 12, Sony's Playstation at 14, YouTube at 36, and Microsoft's Xbox at 42.

Kids participate in more than $500 billion in consumer spending each year, according to Smarty Pants, and their parents consider their favorites when buying everything from snacks to entertainment, both of which popped up heavily on the list.

"From Crayola to iPod, kids' most loved brands are familiar, iconic brands that delight kids and parents with variety, value, family-friendly content, and simple pleasures," Smarty Pants President Wynne Tyree said in a statement. "Interestingly, the top brands are not traditional 'for kids only' brands; in fact, many are not marketed directly to kids."

To compile the report, Smarty Pants questioned 4,700 American kids and their parents online over a period of nine months. Covered in the survey were more than 260 consumer brands across 20 different product categories.

The brands that kids liked most, said SmartyPants, were the ones that offered high-quality family time, age-appropriate content, parent-approved indulgence, variety/choice, "cool" accessibility, and chatter-worthy advertising.

Evil's afoot in the magical world of Disney.

An upcoming issue of Game Informer has confirmed Warren Spector's first game at Disney Interactive. The title will be called Epic Mickey, and it will be a Wii-exclusive title.

The artwork found on the cover of the magazine paints the Disney universe as one being dark and sinister, akin to the studio's own Nightmare Before Christmas. Players will take on the role of Mickey Mouse as he attempts to save the Disney universe from evil.

The World's Best Companies

World's Best Companies 2009
The 40 names making the list, compiled by A.T. Kearney for BusinessWeek, are thriving in the recession and preparing for beyond

Any athlete will tell you that the time to train is in dismal weather, not on perfect, sun-drenched days. If you want to excel at the best of times, it seems, you need to be prepared for the worst.

Companies are little different. So as the economic outlook brightens, those that have worked hard to survive the tough times of the past year are best prepared to seize new opportunities. It is these enterprises that have risen to the top of the World's Best Companies/Global Top 40 list, compiled for BusinessWeek by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.

What are some traits of the World's Best Companies? A commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future. "In an environment of continuous disruptive change, companies that have rigorous strategic planning initiatives that allow them to see over the horizon…are far more likely to win than those that make it up as they go along," says Paul Laudicina, chairman of A.T. Kearney.

To create the list, A.T. Kearney examined the 2,500 largest publicly listed companies in the world. Kearney's team singled out those with a minimum of $10 billion in sales in 2008, at least 25% of which came from outside the company's home region. It then ranked the companies on their sales growth and value creation—the rise of market capitalization after subtracting any increase in capital—over the past five years. This year, the list expanded to 40 companies from the 25 Kearney ranked in the past.

Thriving Industries
The top 40 come from 18 countries and industries ranging from chemicals and contracting to software and shipbuilding. But three groups stand out. There are six technology and telecommunications enterprises that have tapped into continuing demand for mobile-phone service and new digital hardware and services. The eight heavy-industry and engineering outfits performed well as infrastructure spending started to bounce back. Finally, companies in sectors tied to the commodities boom of recent years have in many cases continued to prosper, though their ranks have been thinned considerably.

Japanese electronics maker Nintendo (7974.T) claims the No. 1 spot this year. Its sales have risen 36% annually over the past five years, while its value growth averaged 38%. Despite the hard times of the past year, Nintendo's continued emphasis on innovation has helped the company develop must-haves such as the DS handheld game machine and the Wii console, which outsold rival offerings from Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT). Nintendo's strategy is emblematic of the tech companies on the list. Like Nintendo, American technology giants Google (GOOG) (No. 2), Apple (AAPL) (No. 3), and Amazon.com (AMZN) (No. 17) have continued to invest heavily in innovation, commanding large market share with new products even as consumer spending and confidence have declined sharply. Telecom companies MTN (No. 7) and América Móvil (AMX) (No.18)

Spoiler Alert: “Epic” November Issue Revealed

The rumors have been flying for months. From the outrageous (some actually thought we were bought by Disney, which was quite funny), to the right on (our forums pieced together all the clues from the last issue), the time has come to lay all rumors to rest. The November cover is indeed, Disney Epic Mickey, coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.

This issue is the first of our highly anticipated redesign that subscribers should be receiving around October 12th.

Starting at 4PM CST today we will unveil the first companion piece to the magazine: an exclusive video interview with Warren Spector about his relationship with Mickey Mouse, including a portion of his giant Disney memorabilia collection that is housed at Junction Point. We will also have a photo-blog chronicling many of the outstanding pieces in his collection hitting at the same time.

This is just the beginning of our month of Mickey madness that will unfold over the next three plus weeks. So be sure to watch our Disney Epic Mickey landing page over the following month.

We don’t want to spoil what’s to come, but we have some amazing things in store, including screenshots, animations, and tons of concept art and music.

Watch for the issue in your mailbox over the coming weeks and make sure to come to gameinformer.com for the latest updates and news.

Oh yeah, and one last thing. All GI covers from here on out will feature a full wrap-around cover. Here is the Mickey cover in all its glory. The best part, and the reason we switched to these, is that the subscriber address label and the UPC will be on the back so it no longer clashes with our wonderful cover art.

"My team and I have been working hard on our own and (get ready for the cool factor to go way up) in collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar."

Quote from: EuroGamer - Oct. 2009
Epic Mickey is a tale about the 'forgotten' Disney stars: the rides, the characters, the lesser-known cartoons. When nobody any longer cares, they are cast into a dark void; a forgotten world of broken machines and bitter personalities - a bit like Sid's bedroom in Toy Story, but without the friendly furnishings.

This forgotten world is run by Oswald the Rabbit. He was Disney's first creation, made long before Mickey Mouse, and his jealousy of the newcomer has fermented for years. Now, finally, Oswald is ready for revenge.

He unleashes The Phantom Blot to wipe out Mickey and his cartoon world. The Blot pollutes the Disney universe with sticky black ink that makes colours run and fade (as seen on the Game Informer cover), so it's up to Mickey to restore peace and order. And this is where his tools come in.

Mickey has to draw and scribble his way through levels, mending broken bridges by applying the right colour paint or peering through walls after applying thinner. He can even clear rubble from his path by erasing parts of the world.

Our source told us Epic Mickey is a game about thinking and artwork - laterally considering your environment in order to overcome puzzles.

On top of that is a healthy dose of exploration, plus Mickey will be getting "his first makeover in years". "That's why no one's seen his face yet," our source explained, "But he's far more retro than you've seen him for years."

That is all the details so far, but this post will be updated as more is known.

FTC: Bloggers must disclose payments for reviews

PHILADELPHIA — The Federal Trade Commission will require bloggers to clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products.
It is the first time since 1980 that the commission has revised its guidelines on endorsements and testimonials, and the first time the rules have covered bloggers.
But the commission stopped short Monday of specifying how bloggers must disclose any conflicts of interest.
The FTC said its commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the final guidelines, which had been expected. Penalties include up to $11,000 in fines per violation.
The rules take effect Dec. 1.
