Nintendo Gaming / RE:Metroid Prime 3 Revolutionized
« on: August 04, 2005, 05:43:02 PM »
I'm glad to hear that MP3 will be the last of the Prime games.
That will mean the story will not bleed on forever.

Metroid Fusion left the doors wide open on what Nintendo could do next.
I just hope they get some good sci-fi writers to do Metroid 5 justice.

PS - Everyone does remember the ending to Fusion right???

I think it's gonna come down to what developers do with those cores, and how creative they can get with the power available to them.

I think if used properly, the Xenon could do thing in terms of AI that Cell isn't going to touch.

Cell I think will be the same way, but in term of physics.

Here's one thing that hasn't been mentioned too much, where's the sound chip for the PS3?
While MS has quitely stated that the XBox360 will have dedicated sound hardware, Sony has made said much about it's sound setup.

I wonder if the rumors about Sony using Cell for sound processing are true?
If that's the case, it will be the first time since the N64, a console lacked a dedicated sound chip.

Ironicly, the SPEs in Cell are very DSP like in nature.

General Gaming / RE:MS takes aim at the Rev's "virtual console" idea
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:00:44 PM »
True the SNES did have Satallaview.

Of course Nintendo did briefly announce they were going to have a NES/SNES download service for the 64DD, but never came into being.

Even then, that annoncement came after Sega's ill-fated attempt at a download
service on the Dreamcast.

To put it mildly, this idea has been around a while.

Not to play Devil's Advocate, but as stated in the first post,
Live Arcade has been around awile.

In fact, Live Arcade was around before Nintendo even announced the Rev
download system.

Technically, Nintendo is copying MS in this case.

What flavor of 6800 do you have KDR?
Is it one with a dual slotted cooler or a single slotter cooler?

Well I guess the future will tell if I have to foot ot not when it comes to Rev's
specs.

Yes, I know that Moore's Law doesn't pertain directly to power/heat consumption. I realize in retrospect that Moore's Law wasn't the best example for what I was trying to say.

Basicly what I'm trying to say is, with current cooling technology and current fabing technology, there is no way in hell the Revo can have the same horsepower as XBox360/PS3 with it's current form factor.

Granted part of the size/heat issues that PS3/Xenon will have is due to they both are designed to house an internal haddrive.

The only way Nintendo could create a more powerful system with what's been shown is wait an enitre year and fab on a more advanced process then Sony/MS are using.

Nintendo did this with the GC and look what happened...

The only reason the XBox360 gets away with it's design is it's liquid cooled.
Notice how the PS3 isn't and look at the size of it.

Unless Nintendo knows someone who who can genuinely break Moore's Law
and somehow magicly deal with the heat problems that come from doing that
the Revo will not be more powerful then the PS3 or XBox360.

Of course Nintendo might launch last and solve both of those probs a one swipe.

USB was an Intel backed standard.  As with all things that come from Intel(AC97, USB, Azaila), they are designed to do one thing, sell CPUs.

" Most early teasers are just machinima, rendered with the engine but not doing the full game simulation (no gameplay). That's because scripted sequences look better than full gameplay scenes. "

Too true KDR.

But really, I agree with Ian again.
From what I've read in various interviews, I don't think Rev is even finalized yet.

After seeing the trailer on IGN, these new enemies appear to be a mix of slow/fast zombies.

Also, after searching the Net, it appears some of the people who worked on the PSX version of RE are working on this game.

I just hope that this game answers questions, rather then create new ones.

362
Storywise, will this be the game that RE4 should have been?

Remember our RE4 isn't remotely the original RE4.
I love RE4 to death, but storywise RE4 started a whole new story/arc without really tying up any lose ends that the previous games left.

The future will tell I guess...

Actually, the Live Arcade has been on XBox Live for sometime now.
Sony and Nintendo are just beginning to catch up to this.

General Gaming / RE:PS3 Estimated at $400
« on: July 14, 2005, 06:16:14 PM »
Ah, I remember almost buying a PS2 near launch and finding out that it would cost me 350.00 + tax b/c the store I was at only sold PS3 bundles.  Needless to say I didn't buy it.

I still stand by my original comments.  Sony has always looked at the Playstation as just another electronic gadget.  If you read EGM back in the mid 90's, there were a couple of articles about Sony's plans for the PSX.  Sony original plans were PS2 by 98/99 and PS3 post 2001.  Those plans never panned out, but it shows Sony's mindset about videogames.

I just can't shake the feeling that the PS2 will die an early death b/c Sony finished the PS3 and are now moving on.  Granted it is five years after the PS2, but still...

The reason this next generation is coming to an end so quickly is Sony.  Sony was talking about the PS3 back in 1999, I'm not kidding about that.  MS is launching early because it wants to get the jump on Sony.

I know what I said sounds weird, go look at the last six years and what Sony said and you will see what I mean.

Silicon Graphics makes computer hardware.

"Time is money", that is true KDR.

One reason the PSX won against the Saturn was is was easy to code for.  During the mid-ninties some programming houses were having a hard time transition themselves to 3D programming and when time became money, many of these houses dropped the Saturn and went exclusive PSX or PSX/N64.

Looking for good Cube RPGS...

For single player,
Tales and Skies are must haves, each are good in their own way

For second tier, I would have to say...
Baten Kaitos
FF:CC

And if your absolutely desperate for a Cube RPG try..
Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2
Evolution Worlds
Phantasy Star Online 3, a game that is vastly different from PSO 1+2

Haven't played Paper Mario yet, so I can't say anything about it.

However, Ars-Technica has an article which I can't help but to agree with...

General Gaming / RE:Microsoft , not so bad after all?
« on: June 21, 2005, 05:17:59 PM »
MS is a force of nature.  If MS wasn't in the position they were in, someone else would be, doing the same exact thing.

Look at all the comments/actions made by all the would be MS wannabes out there, Oracle, Sun, and Apple.  These companies want to be MS, but didn't have business sense/balls/money to get there.

About the the IE suit KDR, are you talking about Eolas?

Some people seem to have selective memory.

Nintendo during the late 80s and early 90s ruled the console market in a way MS now rules the OS market.  Remember Mr.Y's rule for third parties?  Work for us or else.

MS is not much different then Nintendo in some ways.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it will cost Sony $600 a shot to buld the PS3.

I still can't fathom why Sony included 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
One 100MBit will be what most would even need.

The Rev??? Who the hell knows...

Everytime I hear Ken K. speak, it confirms that he is on crack.
Really though, what scares me about MS is they have learned a lot about why the XBox didn't do well in certain markets and applied it well to the XBox360.  I can't say the same about Nintendo or Sony.

Ok Sony did learn it's lesson about getting a good GPU into a console.

Wow, this thread is turning into something that reminds me of what Jason did back when the Wind Waker was first revealed...

I can see both KDR's and everbody else's point about physics.

Can't we just get a long?
