General Gaming / Is this E3 make or break for the GC?
« on: March 26, 2004, 02:32:01 AM »
Not in terms of being a successful console, which i believe it is already.  I'm thinking more in terms of momentum going into the next generation.  I realize there will be one more E3 prior to the unveiling of N5, but I think this E3 is the important one.  If Nintendo tank this year, like we know they did last year, they will be burried in many observers minds.  If they blow away everyone, then have WW2,RE4 another FF game, Metroid prime 2 and possibly Mario all in the next year to year and a half, they will have gained a lot of mojo going into E3 and the next system.  Its exactly the type of hype they need.(OMG..hype and nintendo ..together?)  Now, if they can just release the N5 before the other 2 consoles, launch with SuperSmashBros online, Too Human and RE5, theres a formula for increasing market share , big time.  So, I hope these rumors of whats going down at E3 are true.  And I really am getting hyped up for a big show this year.

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto mentions 2 'undisclosed' titles
« on: March 09, 2004, 03:55:34 AM »
I was just reading an article over at C-Europe, and found this little blurb from Miyamoto:
"I am however working closely on Pikmin 2 and two other undisclosed titles alongside it. I hope we will be able to release both of those titles before the end of the year"

So, if they're undisclosed, that means its not Mario 128, and its not WW2.  Could it be another Nintendo franchise?  Maybe Earthbound or Kid Icarus?  Or something completely new?  Hopefully, he'll reveal at E3.

General Chat / I found the underground lair of all things NIN
« on: February 06, 2004, 11:46:26 AM »
I recently moved from New Jersey to Florida to attend film school.  The first week i'm here, theres a poster hanging on the wall that says get N or get out.  Seeing this, i write down the number, strictly out of curiosity because my geekdom tells me its Nintendo related.  I call the number, and The answering machine plays the Zelda theme..nice.  I leave a brief message.  I get a call yesterday from some guy who has started a Nintendo club of sorts.  I showed last night, and low and behold, theres MKD in LAN mode right before my eyes.  These guys made their apartment a full Nintendo shrine.  But before i get my grubby mits on the big screen Timesplitters 2 deathmatch tournement, i must answer 5 questions about Nintendo.  Question 1 had to do with Karnov, and i got it right.  Question 2 : Can you name 3 laser gun games for the NES?  Wild gunman, Duckhunt and Operation Wolf or gumshoe{cant remember my answer}.  Question 3:  What did the ending of 1942 say?  Congratulation! {tis true, no s on the end, why i remember i have no idea}  Question 4:  How do you get to the minus world in Super mario bros?  Get your head stuck in the block which enables you to run through the wall.  {easy for me!}  Last but not least:  What game was made to capatilize on Space harriers success, by looking and playing like it?  3-D worldrunner!  With that, i'm given a card to fill out with my vitals, and i get an official magnetic strip card right off this dudes PC.  I can come and go as i please between certain hours.  They have every Nintendo system, 15 TVs and everybody chips in for..ummm..adult beverages.  Last night, there were over 35 people at one time in this massive apartment.  All ages as well.  From 16 to 40.  I played Pro Wrestling for about 3 hours.  Ice hockey for an hour or so, and then some Goldeneye deathmatch.  All the 4 player games go on one of 2 64in Wide screen tvs.  And the best part of all is, if you dont know Nintendo, you cant get in.  They have a list of over 1,000 questions.  They're called the O.G.s{original gamers}.  You guys would love it.  Anywho, theres my story.  Kind of geeky, but i dont care, i am a film student after all.  We're all 'geeks' here.  But anyway, theres a poll going through our school intranet asking what system is the best.  Theres over 1500 Nintendo votes, 700 and something PS2 votes and 350 Xbox votes{GBA was not included}/.  So i've found paradise.  Hopefully, you'll find yours.

General Chat / Is there a hidden grudge/bias towards Nintendo?
« on: February 04, 2004, 10:37:36 AM »
In my opinion, there seems to be plenty of hurt feelings in the games industry from the 8bit/16 bit days.  Assuming Sega, Namco, Square and a few others have been burned by the big Ns business dealings, mostly iron fist tactics, dont you think its possible that a grudge between companies exists to this day?  I see that these developers are back on board 'officially', but Sega, specifically, still holds some games back, makes 'kiddie' comments more than any other company this side of MS. Maybe not Sega as a whole, but certain developers/studios.  And we all understand how ugly the 16 bit wars were, and many of the same names/ developers are still with them. Namco is on board, but haven't delivered anything that wasnt Nintendos idea.  The 2 new RPGs should make things up nicely, but still, many of their games are not planned to be released on GC.  We know Square is basically making GC game/s just to gain access to the GBA market.
I think of it this way-we're dealing with human emotions.  Many of us have been scarred from past experiance, being a human who happens to work for a video games company makes you no less hurt from past disputes.  I don't find it far fetched in the least to think theres a market wide joy at any failure Nintendo may endure.  It may well be karma for Nintendos past, but that isn't the point.  Do you feel there is any semblence of anti-nintendo-ism in the industry?  And if so, feel free to point out many other examples i left out-i didn't feel like writing a book today.

Nintendo Gaming / Madden 2005 may be canceled-hold your applause
« on: February 02, 2004, 04:25:10 PM »
This would be a huge mistake if allowed to happen.  No matter how many of you cant stand Madden, or any 'realistic' sports games, it would be a major blow to the GCs image.  Its not definate yet, but on Gamespot, there are reklease dates for the Xbox and PS2, but none for GC.  EA is throwing the 'no comment ' quote around which doesnt sound good.  Lets hope Nintendo pays to keep it, or at least offers incentives to keep it on GC.

Nintendo Gaming / Question about MM
« on: January 10, 2004, 11:19:25 AM »
Is it imperative to beat OoT before playing Majoras Mask?  I just got my bonus collectors disc, and have never played MM before.  I'm still in the Shadow temple in OoT, and havent played it in awhile but does MM contain any story elements from OoT, perhaps spoiling OoTs ending ?

General Chat / Cut game prices and save the VG industry
« on: January 07, 2004, 12:42:37 PM »
I was thinking today as i wandered into that wasteland of GC games called EB game world.  What i was thinking was, am i doing a disservice to Nintendo, and the video game industry as a whole by buying used games?  On the surface, it appears harmless.  Somebody bought the game, didnt like it or grew tired of it, and i'm buying it back at a discount.  Then i began to think what if more people bought new games at a lower price ?  What if the industry standard was brought back down to 29.99?  Would the industry sell more games, but lose money?  I dont think so, because i , and a lot of others, would buy the new version, thus adding more sales for the game, instead of everybody waitng to get the used copy.   29.99 compared to 49.99 seems like a big hit to take, but to me it probably would work.  30 bucks is too low for the used games to make a huge discount possible.  29.99 and selling 700,000 copies, as opposed to 49.99 and selling 200,000copies,  still makes more of a boatload of cash for developers.  I bought Splinter Cell used for 24.99 a few weeks ago.  If i had seen it new for 5-10 dollars more, i'd be inclined to buy it.  Its my contention that used games are hurting the overall sales, seeing as they cant count used copies as  adding to the overall count.  In other words, if new game prices were lower, do you think it would spur game sales,or bankrupt game developers?  I tend to think it would add $$$$ at the backend, overall game sales.

General Gaming / N64 worse than GC...but better?
« on: January 04, 2004, 07:27:13 AM »
I've ressurrected my N64 after a 3 year hiatus, and I am starting to feel the exclusive games were some of the best games ever, maybe even surpassing the GCs lineup thus far..  I just think the 64 was so underrated.  Me and my friends were having a great time with these games this weekend.  I have Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, SM64, OoT, TLOZ:MM,  Hybrid Heaven,Super smash bros, Mario party, Beetle adventure racing, Mario Kart, Golf and Tennis.   Put those up against RE, TLOZ:WW, MP, SMS, SSMB:MELEE, MKD, ED and its closer than i would've thought.  I still prefer the GC overall, but for some reason i neglected the N64 so long, even in favor of the NES and SNES.  Oh well, just goes to show you, Nintendo wins even when they 'lose'.

General Chat / The incoherent gamers at EB*mindnumbing*
« on: December 27, 2003, 08:58:41 AM »
I just need to get this off my chest.  EB completely sucks.  They have 20 different games for the GC...20!!!  The GC rack is on the back wall next to the ....Dreamcast!!!  And then the capper, this quote: "Even Xbox has more games than the Cube, and Xbox sucks."   Friend:  "Xbox is better than Gamecube, yo."  Can somebody explain to me why both EB and Gamestop relegate the GC to garbage status?  If you say sales, then shouldn't they put it in front of the store to improve them>?  With all available games?  It isnt like people who want the PS2 games section wont walk in to find it for gad sake!!  This just aggravates me to no end.  All my games are being ordered online from now on.  I hate people.

Now, time to retire to my drinking lounge....

Nintendo Gaming / I know what the new 'product' in Spring is
« on: December 01, 2003, 09:53:59 AM »
Its Nintendos online strategy!  And it will be revolutionary because its free.  I can see it now.  Both the GBA and the GC, online in March!  See, its neither a new console nor handheld.  Jump on board.  I'm so smart...smart i am.

Nintendo Gaming / I just finished Eternal Darkness*spoilers*
« on: November 27, 2003, 10:26:08 AM »
Better late than never, right?  Anyway, this game is great.  I had it sitting here since February, and i was only 2 hours in .  Until last weekend, i decided to give it a go, and the story just grabbed me at about 3 hours .  My favorite chapter had to be the chapter during the war, it was just so immersive.  I also enjoyed the chapter when you're the monk, and locked in a room.  The insanity effects were great.  Once, while trying to save, which i forgot to do numerous times, it said 'delete all files' and clicked yes.  I was like 'nooo!'  Of course, everything was fine, but when youre caught up in the game, they work real well.  Another one was the volume being turned down, which only happened once, but i yelled at my girlfriend.  Twas funny.  Now, my only problem with the game, the ending.  I liked it, but it was anti-climatic because beating Pious wasn't difficult, and instead of a lengthy cut scene at the end, its very brief.  Now, on to my questions.  Does the game change much depending which color you take?  I took the green path(all enemies were xel'letoth).  I'm considering starting over if there are major differences or different endings.  So any info would be greatly blah blah blah.  I highly reccomend anybody who played a little of this game, and didn't like it, give it a few hours.

General Chat / Now hear this, Silicon Knights!
« on: October 31, 2003, 09:15:11 AM »
I want a Nightmare on elm street game.  You can have the sleep meter work, just like the sanity meter.  Slipping into dream mode could allow a real diverse atmosphere , while awake mode has you leveling up your character, talking to people and investigating murders in the city.  Make the city huge, like GTA3, so that you can go anywhere you want. You could also play as Freddy.  As Freddy, you would only be in the dream world, and you try and keep the dreamers from leaving.  Leveling up gives you different death skills, different forms and different traps and different dream 'arenas' .  Everytime somebody escapes you, you lose some power.  I wish i could explain it better, but Denis, you can do the rest.

Nintendo Gaming / Thornado
« on: October 30, 2003, 05:05:38 AM »
Weren't we all under the impression this game was canned?  Over at Cubeeurope, comes this quote:
"Thornado is being developed by Factor 5 for the N5. I have seen some screens of Thornado on the Gamecube and it is going to be a Contra type game. It is looking sweet if I don't say so myself."

If this has been previously reported, i apologize.  But it surprised the heck out of me.  I was fairly certain Pilotwings would be for N5, but having Thornado at launch would be outstanding.  Is this a well known fact, or is this guy making up a pile of crap?

General Chat / Your top 10 movies
« on: October 23, 2003, 08:30:28 AM »
Since this came up in the 'end of humanity thread', i figure i'd start this one.  These movies should be your favorites, not neccessarily the best made movie.  Its often interesting to see other peoples tastes, and i think what films a person likes reflects a part of that persons personality. Feel free to put movies and their sequals together if you love the whole series.  So here we go:

1. Godfather1&2: Amazing overall movies.  No negatives.
2. The breakfast club: This movie meant a lot to me, personally, and spoke a lot about high school cliques.' Love John Bender!(interesting sidebar:bender started the grunge style-go back and look)
3. Pulp Fiction-Absolutely wicked, with bad characters that are likeable.  Hard to do.  Dialogue is very witty.  I quote this movie all the time.
4. The Shining: The best horror movie ever.  Nicholson should've been nominated for an oscar.  I still watch this movie often.
5. Goodfellas: Just great actors with a great script.  Deniro and Pesci are awesome on screen.  Ray Liotta great as Henry Hill.  I quote this movie on a daily basis.
6. American Psycho:  I dig the dark humor and the comment on 80's excess most people dont see, therefore, they hate it.  But i love it.
7. The cable guy: Again, like American psycho, very dark overtones, and widely despised..  but again, i think it makes interesting commentary on society.
8. High Fidelity: Loved every second of this movie.  I relate to it like no other movie, barring The breakfast club.
9. Clerks: Wonderful dialogue.  I have friends who are like them.  I met Kevin Smith, so he definately goes on the list.
10. Mulholland Drive:  David Lynch at his maddening best.  I still think about this movie, a year later, and try and figure it out. Now thats a good movie.

Just some of my personal favs...judging by my list, i appear a little unstable.  And thats true!  See how the list works?

General Chat / Advertising the GC and 'N5'-my idea
« on: October 22, 2003, 07:20:26 AM »
The huge trend here in the U.S. is retro -sports jerseys and VH1 'The 80's strike back' along with 'it came from the 70's'.  People seem to be in love with things they grew up with.  I know i watch that show on the '80's all the time.  Now, Nintendos been around since the early 80's.  Why not capture the nostalgia of the 80's in their ads.?  They're the only company of the 3 that can do it, and it would slyly put Nintendo in the 'cool' retro mode, without being really cool.  Kind of the quirky, nerdy cool.  Make the Zelda ads like the old one-"which way to go?", showing the new Zelda.  I think they could really exploit this trend.  Actually, its more than a trend now, as retro has been going on for awhile .  But now, with the old NFL jerseys popping up all over, the old Jordans may make a comeback, i just see a potential goldmine.  Maybe collaberate with VH1 for a few commercials.  Get the Beastie Boys, champions of oldschool, to promote a little.  And this will bring in the casual fan who remembers the name Nintendo.  Even my cousin, who is 12, remembers Nintendo from when he was younger because he had a hand me down NES that his brother gave him.  A lot of younger people played the NES and SNES, so i think it would work all around.  And, make a commercial with 80's style people, feathered hair and all, playing SMB, and then have the new game blow them away.  Make it real cheesy, like the 80's ads.  Well, i'm out of ideas for now, but you see where i'm going.

« on: October 21, 2003, 11:48:15 AM »
Here's one: Puff 'P Diddy' Combs is now a celebrity spokesmen for Xbox.  Read this statement, and you'll swear they're talking about the savior:

Quote

P.Diddy was the perfect fit as our first celebrity voice because he embodies the same spirit as xbox". said xbox's director of brand marketing. Don Hall. 'He's multi faceted, has made a significant social impact, and pulls millions of people together in a positive way with his powerhouse talents"

LoL.  Now Nintendo should go out and get the real talent, The Beastie Boys.  They've said they liked Nintendo before, go get them.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo fans reach 'cult' status
« on: September 20, 2003, 07:45:40 AM »
It appears to me that the hardcore Nintendo fans, me included, almost enjoy the against all odds position since the N64.  Other fans come and go, but we go down with the ship.  ...in pop cultures eyes, that is.  This doesn't mean you only own Nintendo systems, but it means you have a strong connection to everything Nintendo.  You go to EB, and ask for Madden 2004, and they hand you the PS2 version, and you get agitated.  You see kids in Gamestop saying "Nintendo games look so ghey", and you want to ring their neck, as you see them holding DOA:XVB.   You look at Nintendo as the unsung heroes of gaming, and you are a card carrying member of their 'group'.  You buy other systems, enjoy them even, though part of your mind is telling you,' this is wrong.'  You love that Nintendo comes out with games like Cubivore, Pikmin, and Animal Crossing.  You love being the only person in your group of friends who owns the GC.  Its the underdog status, i guess.  This all comes up because my friends wouldn't play my Madden 2004 because it was on the GC and the controller was 'ghey'.  They say intelligent things like, 'Arent they out of business?'  and 'did you know that Nintendo tried to steal the Playstation name?'  In closing, embrace your misfit status, it sets you apart from the flock.

Bottoms up!!!

General Gaming / Fable is a....fable?
« on: September 20, 2003, 06:35:08 AM »
Its been reported the most recent build of Fable (the self-annointed world changing best RPG of all time) at X03 had nothing to show except "a guy swinging an axe in the woods'".  When asked about this, Peter Molynaux(sp?) said none of the features promised to be groundbreaking have been 'implemented yet".   This guy just sickens me.  He did the same thing with Black & white...talking all this stuff about how groundbreaking it would be, and barely scratched the surface of any of his promises.  This was one game i was interested in,(though i despised the bluster coming out of camp xbox about it.) and now, it seems hes back to over-thinking everything and exhausting other peoples wallets.  Get the thing done...its been almost 2 stinking years!

General Chat / David Bowie
« on: September 19, 2003, 09:44:31 PM »
I know theres a lot of youngsters on these boards, so i dont expect a lot of feedback.  Anyway, i recently got into Bowie , and i have to say i'm very impressed.  I know most of you will think of his 80's 'work', which isn't anything like his 70's or 90's stuff.  The most interesting cds so far are what is known as the 'BERLIN TRILOGY'.  Starting with 'Low', then 'Heroes' and ending with 'Lodger'.  This guy was so far ahead of his time. I encourage everyone young and old, to start a collection.  I now have 15 cds from Bowie (including the newly released 'Reality'), and theyre all great.  Some are hard rock, some are industrial, some are funk, some are airy techno jungle beats, and some are just plain wierd.  But, since nobody will read this, yay for freaking me!!!!!

General Chat / I suck
« on: September 08, 2003, 11:35:04 PM »
I've noticed a disturbing trend regarding me finishing games.  I haven't beat Metroid Prime yet, nor Windwaker.  Dead to rights? nope.  How about Sunshine?  No sir!  Not even Eternal darkness.  I don't know whats happened to me, but i used to beat every game i played.   In the NES/SNES days, i beat over 100 games.  Now, i'm far along in each, but something always pulls me away, like a new game, movies, writing, ect..  i did beat RE :remake, but even that took a few months of dust collecting before i ventured back to it.  I think it has to do with getting older and having my career, along with other hobbies.  But the disconcerting thing is, i still play a lot, just a lot of different games.  I no longer spend hours upon hours on one game.  Getting game guides would help, but i'm much too proud to do that.  I just wouldn't respect myself.  I still love games, especially when i have writers block, as it helps me stir up my imagination, but i still don't finish the games i like, and i'm always saying 'i gotta finish Zelda soon' .  It just doesn't happen.   Does anyone else have this 'problem'?

Spong.com, the biggest joke of a site, said it appeared to be lightgun game, but they couldnt show the pics.  I cant see how it would be a game like that as Nintendo has no gun, correct?  Is it me, or are they so damn irresponsible when 'reporting'?  They are also the site that said Nintendo confirmed MK:64  as a bonus disk for MKD.  Now they say it isn't.   Utter garbage.
