Nintendo Gaming / Now Sony Agrees: Everyone is Buying Wii
« on: May 14, 2006, 07:00:29 AM »
Peter Moore said it first, now Phil Harrison agrees!

Quote

“I think Peter Moore is exactly right. I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3.”

Do they really not see it as competing? Because if so they're in big trouble.

It's here! 1:35 left until all our dreams (hopefully) come true. Let's all join hands together and sing camp fire songs while we wait.

Just a reminder, it's live on GameSpot: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/special_events/live.php?event=e32006

Most blogging sites will also have live reports.

Are you ready? What is your one wish? Mine is Mario Wii. I really liked Sunshine (gets a very unfair rep) but I'm really ready for the next great Mario game. If it's not there, or just in video, I'll have to feel a little let down. But hopefully it is there!

Yay.

Nintendo Gaming / The problem with "Wii'...
« on: April 28, 2006, 09:36:05 PM »
Reading more and listening to some thoughts about the name has finally brought me to why the name just doesn't work. I like the idea of a short, simple word. I like the idea of something different with a lot of meanings. But 'Wii' isn't that name. Why? A few reasons:

1) Wii isn't the name of an object. It's hard to use, and it shouldn't have to be. Because it's based off of a pro-noun but is forced to function as a noun, and it makes it awkward. The names it is modelled after (iPod primarily) are set after the same principle, but it's not the same usage. It doesn't sound like an object, and there is no brand Nintendo has mentioned that is an object without some sort of noun. It just doesn't work they way they want it to.
2) It's outdated. The 'i' is old. The iMac redefined naming tech objects, and it was brilliant, but it's been 8 years. Everything has an 'i' now, every little device, everything. It's tired, and it's passe. The little 'i' is old, and it's going to be even older in 5 years.

Basically, I like the idea. I like the intent. I like the direction. But the name does not work like it's meant to. It's not that it's disgusting, or terrible, or offensive, it's just not right. It doesn't work.

Nintendo Gaming / Make Up Some Wii-Names!
« on: April 27, 2006, 06:45:55 PM »
You can do it! We had the "Super" games. We had the "64". Now it's the Wii! What will the games be?

Super Smash Bros.: Miiwii
Super Miiwiio Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wii Waker
Metroid Wiime
Wiiteos!
Wii Wok Together (Cooking Plus!)
Wii Wok Together (Marathon Exercise!)
Animal Crossing: Wiild World (too easy)
Pikmin Wii
Wii Icarus
Madden NFL 200X

It probably wouldn't hurt to have a little humour with something so painful. So this might be a good exercise! What are your best?

Nintendo Gaming / EA Kicks the Rev Up and Down the Street
« on: April 25, 2006, 08:43:44 AM »
“One of the challenges for the Revolution is that it’s not HD. If you think about RTS games, one element is the control scheme, but the other is the distance from the TV screen when you’re playing a console game versus a PC game. One of the reasons Battle for Middle Earth II works so well on the [Xbox] 360 is the controller, but the other reason is the HD - you can see everything, frankly, as well or better as you can when you’re [as close as you would be to a PC]. So I think there are some questions there, and the other issue is performance. The hardware performance is sort of current gen plus, versus the 10x or 20x multiple that you get on next-gen. I mean, EA is building stuff for it, but I kind of prefer the DS. It makes the most sense to me.” - Electronic Arts Los Angeles Vice President and General Manager Neil Young

Ugh. I hate EA, but this just makes me hate them more.

Nintendo Gaming / The New Castlevania Art Style
« on: April 21, 2006, 11:42:17 AM »
I was waiting for someone to make a thread (as I really dont care) about this, but surprisingly no one has. A few sites have flipped out over the new anime-art style (publicity art, no screens yet) for the new Castlevania DS. They're judging based off of the Nintendo Power cover. View here:

So...thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / Crossbeam and the Games...
« on: April 12, 2006, 07:57:30 PM »
A comment at Revolutionfanboy really got me thinking about Crossbeam. They've announced these 3 games and yet they don't have a publisher yet. They've shown nothing but concepts. And let's face it, these are insanely complex ideas. The chances of a MAJOR studio pulling these four games off is near-impossible (Capcom's Fantastic 5, anyone?), let alone a tiny no-money developer.

I guess I just find it hard to believe that these games will ever see the light of day.

EDIT: fixed an error with game placement.

Nintendo Gaming / New Mario lacks 'newness'
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:31:20 AM »
Just when I was starting to forget why 99% of gaming sites suck, along comes this lovely Joystiq piece.

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/12/new-mario-lacks-newness-says-infendo/

It's based on an Infendo article by a guy who has...looked at only screenshots. Never played it. And yet Joystiq is reporting it as news. NEWS.

Oh PGC, how I love you. Why must everyone else suck so bad?

GarageGames is one of the largest Indie game producers who deal in both game publishing/distribution and developer tools (the $100 Torque engine, for example). They have release the highest grossing Live Arcade game to date, Marble Blast Ultra, as well as PC games/Independant Games Festival nominees Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa, Tube Twist and 2005 Game of the Year winner Gish, among other acclaimed products.

In an interview with Little Mathematics, GG promoter Jay Moore had this to say when asked about possible Virtual Console support:

Quote

We've always said we'll be everywhere there is an opportunity to bring fun games to players with our tools and our games. I can neither confirm or deny any relationship with Nintendo or why GarageGames booth was right next to the Nintendo Gamers Lounge at GDC.

Nintendo Gaming / "The Emperor Visiting the Death Star"
« on: April 07, 2006, 11:14:24 AM »
Technically this fits in general or GameCube, but this is the more high traffic forum and it certainly affects the Rev and company in general.

It's an article about how Miyamoto worked with Retro on Metroid Prime. Quite a fascinating read.

General Chat / Favorite game sites?
« on: April 02, 2006, 08:40:21 PM »
Besids our lovely host, what are your favorite game sites?

I have two other sites that I visit on a daily (or more than daily) basis: Joystiq (and Rev/DSfanboy) and IGN (DS/Rev/sometimes Cube/GBA). I find that Joystiq gives me the most interesting news and allows me to stay uptodate with all platforms. IGN usually has the best news/biggest stories. They also have the best media browsing/backlog.

For weekly visits I have GameRankings where I keep upto date on whats hot. I also visit Nintendojo though it's a totally useless site (old habits). I sometimes visit AdvanceMediaNetwork too, but usually jsut the DS section.

What're yours?

The Xbox 360 is to be relaunched in Japan in late June in response to weak sales of the console, according to a report today which cites sources at Japanese wholesalers and indicates that an announcement of the relaunch could come next week.

It's from March 31, not April 1, so it's not an April Fools gag.

Though it's far funnier than any April Fools gag ever.

General Chat / Sixty Milllllllllllllion Dollars!
« on: February 24, 2006, 01:24:24 PM »
For the Emperor Palpatine to Iwata's Mon Mothma, the Darth Vader to Miyamoto's Anakin Sykwalker, the Jabba the Hutt to NOA's Princess Leia, the Sarlaac to the N64's Boba Fett, and the George Lucas to Nintendo's original trilogy, he sure is a pretty generous guy.

I personally think the fact he's still alive and kicking proves he is, indeed, the direct and unquestionable spawn of Godzilla. But we love him anyway! Scales, fire breath, endless sequels and all!

Nintendo Gaming / Revolution Package Mocks
« on: February 21, 2006, 10:52:46 PM »
These are fanmade, but I REALLY like them. And judging from the DSL packaging, they could be quite close. IMHO some catchy packaging is an important part of a new mage for Nintendo. The brown cardboard must go. Apple's packaging, for instance, is just paper and plastic, but it stands out and is very memorable. Image isn't important for games, but we all know it matters in marketing.

http://www.nintendogal.com/index.php?/archives/576-Revolution-Box-Mock-Ups.html

I'm not sure what I like best, they're all catchy. I don't like the light blue, though the idea would be ok if reworked. My ideal is a mix of the black one and the white one. Basically the white one in black. It'd be a GREAT visual signature for the system. Only ones I hate are the last ones, which are fugly.

Nintendo Gaming / DSLite - The New Thread (Japanese Launch in 3 Weeks!)
« on: February 21, 2006, 10:47:57 PM »
The old one kind of died off. Why not a new one, seeing as the thing launches really soon. To start us off, JeuxFrance has a big treat for us, DSL Japanese packaging!

Apple? Nintendo!

(yes, that's my hosting)

Naturally Japanese/American packaging will be different, but I at least hope NOA goes with something similar! The Micro has GREAT packaging, so hopefully that's a sign!

General Gaming / Those dirty porn for kids games...
« on: February 17, 2006, 05:44:56 PM »
...you know the ones. The ones that nasty bad dirty porn company used to gag and tie up parents before forcing poor unsuspecting innocent children to go out and buy a game shark and then input a series of really difficult and long codes so as to make them on purpose look at badly designed clothed pixelated humping! So...what are your thoughts?

I've borrow the game from the residence's game library (San Andreas) twice now. I've decided I won't bother again. They were quite amusing at first, and the ability to go everywhere was neat. But not I just want to throw the damn thing. Any game where I spend 95% of my time just GETTING TO a mission is a piece of crap. Not to mention the graphics are mediocre, the controls are horrible and the cut scenes suck after the first couple times of seeing them.

Neat idea, neat structure, but good lord the novelty wears off fast and then this game's millions of flaws shine through. Reviews for this series are EXCEPTIONALLY overrated. Unbeleiveable the media is this gullible.

EDIT: Changed 'stupid' to gullible.

NWR Feedback / Help with signature...

I tried to do a linked image (for SpreadFirefox) in my sig. I didn't know if images worked there. Apparantly not. Anyway, it screwed up and I have the signature you can now see. The problem is that I can't access my profile page to edit it any more! It tells me there's an error on line something or other. Can someone help?

The top link is to a higher quality PDF. Courtesy of Engadget. Keep in mind this is a cheaply produced prototype model, not a production model. It was also photographed very poorly. The final unit will be much tighter in assembly and a brighter, cleaner, uniform colour. Basically this just gives you a peek at the design! Looks great.

Nintendo Gaming / Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (BLAST from the PAST)
« on: February 04, 2006, 04:48:14 PM »
So, I got this several years ago and never made it far. So I've been playing it lately. I just have one question:

If Kojima wanted me to sit and stare at my tv without doing anything, why didn't he just make a movie?

I like the game portion of this, but only half of the time is actually a game! I cannot believe this overblown FMV fest is so highly praised...

General Chat / Battlestar Galactica - Or Why You Should Watch
« on: January 12, 2006, 11:01:43 AM »
It's the BEST show on TV! I'm as big a Lost and AD fan as anyone, but Battlestar is just ummmm AMAZING.

Forget everything you know about sci-fi shows. Forget it. This is the most dramatic, harshest and realistic sci-fi show ever.

"BUT I'S HATEZ SCI-FIZES DURHHRHR!" Ok, so maybe you do. Ask yourself this: would you be willing to watch a military show? Or at least give one a try? If so, Battlestar is for you. If you like sci-fi, Battlestar is for you. If you like drama, Battlestar is for you. If you like amazing TV, Battlestar is for you.

It's film documentary style with dark toned interiors and oversaturated exteriors. It has one of the most unique scores ever, as far removed from Star Wars (and the original series) as you can get. It has great effects (for TV) that it only uses when needed. There are NO CHEESY ALIENS or freaky languages. It's about real people fighting a war. It's got some of the mystery and myth of Lost, plus some of the absolute best acting on TV. The writing is sharp, intelligent and biting. Its full of political commentary but doesn't try and be topical. It's for adults and it's the best sci-fi show EVER.

So...try it!
