General Gaming / The DS is SO going to outsell the PS3...
« on: October 30, 2006, 09:15:26 AM »
Quote

The Nikkei Keizai Shimbun paper reports today that due to component shortages, Sony will only have 80,000 PS3 units ready for Japanese launch instead of the originally planned 100,000 units. That's a 20% cut.

It sounds better than it is, though. The strategy makes perfect sense and it's brilliant. You make sure no one can buy a PS3 so everyone still wants it. That way no matter what happens you can say "Once we get more systems it'll sell billions of copies!" Genius.

Nintendo Gaming / Sony is Winning the Handheld War, Proof Inside!
« on: September 22, 2006, 12:09:26 PM »
Quote

“I think obviously our competition, the handheld devices from Nintendo and specifically in the case of the DS, we really feel like they’re appealing to the same audience that Game Boy has always appealed to. And if you look at the adoption rate of the DS over the first 17 months, not only does it trail the PSP but it also trails their other platforms… They’re potentially losing some of their core audience and they’re not really expanding beyond that and we think we’re expanding into a completely new audience as we did with PlayStation. And we’ll do just what we did on PlayStation; we’ll dip down to the younger consumer eventually and we’ll ultimately appeal to that vastly Earth wide audience we carved out with the original PlayStation.” - Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Executive VP Jack Tretton

I totally agree.

Nintendo Gaming / Region free is back in!
« on: September 18, 2006, 11:49:53 AM »
According to GameSpot and a Nintendo rep.

Quote

The official story: Getting answers from Nintendo proved difficult during one of the company’s busiest days of the year. However, after a lengthy exchange of cryptic e-mails, a rep finally confirmed that Kaplan’s words regarding regionless first-party titles and potentially regionless third-party titles were indeed correct: “[The] Wii will be region-free.”

NOA has now backed off of that statement.  And a thousand geeks suddenly cried out in unison, and were silenced.

Nintendo Gaming / Sam & Max to Wii...Developers Hope So
« on: September 15, 2006, 04:58:33 PM »
The new Sam & Max developers put out a call for people to e-mail Nintendo. They want to put it on Wii but need Nintendo's support. Well, just hours after the campaign began...Nintendo called them! A really exciting story. The game is in episodes and would be perfect for the VC.

Nintendo Gaming / So, for us Canadians...
« on: September 14, 2006, 08:45:35 AM »
Let's look at what we'll pay.

Console + Wii Sports = $279.99
2000 WiiPoints = $24
Games = $59.99 (going by Amazon.ca, seems reasonable)

No word on controller prices, but based on recent accessory pricing we'll see $24-25 for the Classic Controller/Nunchuk and $45 for the Wiimote. So, to total up?

Console + WiiSports + 2nd FULL Controller + Classic Controller + 2000 WiiPoints + 1 Game = $457 or so. With tax (14% in most places) that's $521.

In comparison, the CORE 360 is $399. Add two controllers, a game and XBL Points and you have $599 plus tax for a total of $684.

Not bad, especially compared to our American counterparts.

NWR Feedback / "General Games" Forum?
« on: July 30, 2006, 12:05:45 PM »
Sometimes there is a topic that fits ALL systems, or isn't specific to any. It is very much Games related, not general chat, but doesn't fit in the forums. Stuff like the E3 downsize or when there's some kind of new technology. Stuff that isn't 'news' but still fit for discussion. It would be helpful to have a General Games forum for general chat about video games.

Perhaps it could be an extension of Other Systems? "General Chat & Other Systems" or the like.

Just a thought

Nintendo Gaming / PoP: Sands of Time is Complete and Utter CRAP
« on: July 29, 2006, 10:29:30 AM »
I am sorry, but any game that has parts where you can actually ruin your ability to play anymore does not deserve 9s and 10s. One of the absolute key rules of dveloping is never allow the play to be perminantly stuck!

So, presented with the option of replaying the 3:25 I've put into this game or smashing it with a sledgehammer, I believe I'll do the latter.

Piece. Of. Crap.

And people wonder why Nintendo fans almost always stick with first party games? THIS IS WHY. Crap. Crap. Crap.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Music Ideas
« on: July 26, 2006, 01:53:50 PM »
I was thinking that if Nintendo was smart they wouldn't just use WiiMusic as a simple game, but just as non-game game. Instead of simple conducting it should be a complete music suite. You could have the base mode which we saw at E3. Conduct your favorite songs and such. There could be new downloadable song from WC24 and the like. But then it could also include a full composition section (think Mario Paint). You could create a whole orchestrated piece in full written music, then conduct it! And you could upload the 'sheet' music and your conducting of it online! Then people could download new songs to conduct or watch/listen to songs other people have created! It would be a fun way for people to trade music, try their hand at making some, and for real music lovers it could be a unique way to be artistic and expressive.

WiiMusic could actually be a non-gamer killer app, and spawn a huge community of trading and creating. It would appeal to everyone, but also to the musical/artistic market. Like a MySpace of music!

In my local EB. Just browsing (and picking up a cheapo Prince of PerisA). No biggie. Glance through the DS games just in case I see a rare one. Nada. Just the usuals. Look down all the shelves, never hurts to be thorough. Get to the last shelf where they stick the crappy games side by side so you can only see the spines. Nada. Except. Very last on the shelf. What is that? No...it cannot be!

PHOENIX WRIGHT ACE ATTORNEY!?

Why yes! So I bought it.

It is very amusing and pleasurable.

I hope in the sequel they make the whole process more interactive, as that is my only complaint.

Now, to the point: has anyone noticed this game in greater supply?

Futureshop is in the house.

No systems yet, but the games are all 69.99, same as 360. Could drop I guess.

Nintendo Gaming / The Capcom 2
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:20:40 AM »
I refer, of course, to the 'only' worthwhile titles of the original Capcom 5: Viewtiful Joe and RE4. And, after way too long, I finally purchased them both yesterday! I haven't played RE4 yet (saving it for a dark, lonely night, lol) but have been playing Joe. Besides absolutely sucking (I can't even beat the helicopter on Adult, so I've resorted to playing Kids) I'm really enjoying it. I'm not a huge beat-em-up fan, but Joe is so well done you can't not like it. They seriously better come out with this for Wii, it could be insane if they include all kinds of whacky actions.

General Chat / Favorite Web Comic
« on: June 17, 2006, 11:33:22 AM »
I used to read more than I do now, but I'm curious what are your favs?

I used to enjoy Bob and George as well as 8-Bit theatre but stopped as they seem to be all out of fresh material. I read Penny Arcade occasionally. Usually I just stick to JoyStiq's web comic round up.

I think VG Cats is the best drawn strip on the web, though. The writing is poor but visually it's hilarious.

“In a way I understand why people say [we stole Nintendo’s idea], but it is a little stupid, if you forgive the remark. When we brought the PlayStation to the market in 1994, we introduced real time 3-D graphics for the first time. When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, “Nintendo stole our idea!”? Obviously not. Such innovations become possible because of a combination of technology, cost and manufacture capacities. We’ve been working on [motion-sensing technology] for a long time and Nintendo has certainly likewise already been working on something similar. The difference between our strategy and that of our competition is that our controller is still similar to the Dual Shock, the industry standard controller. I estimate that nearly 400 million Dual Shock controllers have been sold worldwide.” - Sony’s Phil Harrison
