Nintendo Gaming / Is game-footage usally hightest quality?
« on: February 23, 2003, 02:11:05 PM »
I sometimes see in game things that look better than screenshots I have seen.  The reason being that the screenshots are compressed all to hell to save bandwidth, and don't look as good as when the graphics are being generated in real time.  Also, the screenshots you see are often from early betas, and don't feature all the bells and whistles that the full versions have.

Nintendo Gaming / ZELDA !?!?!

Yes, all the textures and models are the same as the N64 versions, but the resolution has been almost doubled, so the picture is a lot sharper.      Believe me, it's very noticable.

But the main changes are to the dungeons.  The game just doesn't play the same...  It's like you are playing a whole new game almost, and it's pretty tricky.

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda: OoT:Master Quest Help Thread
« on: February 23, 2003, 01:59:06 PM »
One thing I found odd about Master Quest was when I caught a 20 pound fish, it was reported as being MORE than 20 pounds, but the scale couldnt'go any higher...  I didn't remember ever catching a fish that big in OoT.  The fish was simply massive though.  It took me like 5 minutes to reel it in.

You have no defense items, but your partner can shoot a zombie if it bites you.  That does the job quite nicely in most cases.

Actually, much of the Resident Evil backdrops are combinations of FMV and realtime graphics.  Play the game sometime, and check it out.  The backgrounds are rarely still.

Nintendo Gaming / DivX?

Well, I haven't gotten around to playing Nightfire.  I did play a lot of SSX Tricky though, and other than the absence of a few movies from the PS2 version (that I probably wouldn't have watched anyway), I really didn't have any complaints.

Uh...I think that's everything.

Oh, 2 case fans and a PCI fan. (I thought my graphics card was overheating, so I got one of these...turned out it was a problem with the RAM. Oh well.)

Heh...  That sounds a whole lot like my computer, but without DDR, and a few extra numbers on a few things, and a nicer video card.  Would you be willing to post your 3DMark03 score at all?

Give me a couple of hours (maybe overnight), and I can turn all the FMV in Final Fantasy VII PC into Divx, and given the source code for the game, I could port it to DivX in about another hour.  It's not really as big a deal as you make out.

The problem is that I am sure that Factor 5 wants some money for their DivX kit, and developers probably are too cheap to pay it, or really don't care if their FMV is butchered all to hell.  Personally it doesn't bother me much though.  The only game I have played that really has FMV THAT low in quality is Eternal Darkness.  *sob*

Nintendo Gaming / GC online TO wipe the floor with XBOX live...?
« on: February 22, 2003, 07:39:48 PM »
This thread is SO scheduled to be closed.  Nevertheless, I will provide my input.

If Nintendo shows up with some high profile online games of their own, coupled with some FPS type games from 2nd or 3rd parties, they will rule the North American online market.  Personally I don't think the online market is that big, but extra features certainly don't hurt a game.

I know that I just said that I wasn't interested in going online with my GameCube in an above post....  but Animal Crossing 2 online sounds interesting to me.  If it is REALLY good, then I might just actually buy one.  However, I am NOT paying monthly fees.  That's just out of the question.

I think I should really look for a copy of Golden Sun 1.  I might be interested in it.  I just really don't know if it's worth $40.  That's a lot of money, and I have to buy SKies of Arcadia and Zelda in the next two months.

Nah, I saw your post, I just refrained from comment, as I didn't have anything to add.  I would never take apart my GameCube, except for maybe sometime to clean/replace the cooling fan.  I gotta admire your bravery though.  My GameCube is too precious to me to risk it.

3467
ATI made GCN's processor?  O_o  That's news to me.  I always thought it was IBM...

Anyways, I would just like to say that ATI wasted nVidia recently, and I am hoping for more of the same out of them in the future.    But that being said, ATI did NOT make the GPU in the GameCube.  It was ArtX.  ATI bought ArtX right as Flipper was being taped out.

General Gaming / Could someone explain to me what "bits" are?
« on: February 21, 2003, 09:48:16 PM »
OOPS!!!  Something was bothering me about my explanation...  (other than the horrid grammar), and I guess now I know what it was.

It's true what they say.  Coding totally destroys your ability to communicate clearly.

Nintendo Gaming / The Cube and Online Games
« on: February 21, 2003, 09:36:25 PM »
It would take something very special to convince me to buy a broadband adaptor.  PSO just isn't special enough to me to warrant the cost.  If the game was something REALLY good, the service was free, and I happened to have money at the time (not bloody likely), I might consider buying one.  Mario Kart, Tony Hawk, PSO, and whatever other online games there are just won't convince me to buy one.  I don't think I am alone on this one either judging from a few recent polls on GameFAQs.  It seems that I am a part of the vast majority of gamers.

Do you suppose that Nintendo knows this?

General Gaming / Could someone explain to me what "bits" are?
« on: February 21, 2003, 06:22:47 PM »
A bit is 1/8 of a byte.
A byte is 1/1024 of a kilobyte.
A kilobyte is 1/1024 of a megabyte.
a megabyte is 1/1024 of a gigabyte.
a gigabyte is 1/1024 of a terrabyte.

and so forth.

a computer uses a certain amount of bits when processing data.  The more bittage your processor has, the higher the numbers it can work with.  The thing is that after a while, it's really irrelevant how high of numbers you can have is.  In addition, many 32 bit processors are tweaked out enough to outperform a 64 bit processor.

Your computer has a 32 bit processor.  (At least I hope it does)

And there goes my dummied down version of a computer's workings.

General Gaming / Why do nintendo fans hate Xbox so much?
« on: February 21, 2003, 06:09:56 PM »
Well, I am not sure if this thread will remain open for very long, but I will give my opinions anyways

1)  The Architecture.  Putting a PC in a box that resembles a console somewhat, and runs a Windows OS is NOT the way to make a console.  The very idea of it annoys me.  Consoles and PCs should be kept seperate, and I do not like the integration thing MS is pushing.

2)  Microsoft.  They have no gaming experience, and nothing other than greed brought them into the console industry.  They figure that if they can throw enough money in, they can buy themselves a place, and make some more money.  I have no respect for that philosophy.

3)  The advertising.  Their ads remind me of AOL ads.  They don't contain much factual information, and rely entirely on hyping up something that isn't true.  (250 million polys/sec, exclusive games, most powerful console ever made, etc, etc, etc.)

That about covers my primary reasons for hating it.  I would NEVER buy an Xbox.  I don't care if they bought the most magnificent game ever.  I don't care if they bought Nintendo.  I am never EVER buying another Microsoft product as long as I live because of the Xbox.

I have no such disposition towards Sony however.  I don't really care about them either way.

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto interview! Heaps of news!
« on: February 21, 2003, 03:29:03 PM »
Eternal Darkness wasn't sold on violence though.  It was sold because of the freaking genius that Dyack and co. have.  The violence in the game was very subtle, and it was made clear that the story and gameplay took precedence over a lot of blood and guts.  GTA does no such thing.  That's where the true difference lies.

We are talking about the mass audience, and many people have different their own ways of making use of entertainment. We as the maker always have a responsibility over how our products are used by the mass market. There are reasons why no companies are willing to market GTA as their product in Japan. At least people have a sense of the danger of the current situation.

More importantly, we need to find something that is a substitute for Grand Theft Auto, in terms of a game that sells. It's our mission to find an alternative that is unique and non-violent. One of the answers is the connectivity offered by GameCube and GBA.

I definately like the sound of that.  The whole concept of GTA has been disturbing to me.  There is little to no gameplay, and the game sells itself on excessive violence.  IMO, the industry would be better without it.

I am quite pleased that Nintendo is not selling out and will remain true to the gamers among those who play video games.

Eh?  Capcom expected 400,000 copies of the Resident Evil Remake to sell worldwide.  They have sold around a million so far.  Not too shabby if you ask me.  Resident Evil 0 I am uncertain about, but I do know it sold fairly well in North America before Christmas.  Hell, I have a copy sitting right next to me.  And someone once told me that the Resident Evil Remake sold more copies than Silent Hill 2 on PS2.
