heh.  They are all homoerotic too.  That's what makes the game so great.

heh.  I find it amusing how Denis has made it so that people automatically jump on every word he says as being a new game now.  The man is a genius I tell ya.  Personally, I would take this "news" with more than a few grains of salt, but if you want to jump on the megaton bandwagon, be my guest.

General Chat / Gaming Moments
« on: December 13, 2003, 04:00:29 PM »
It's an opinion of mine that there is a moment in each of your favorite games that are burned into your mind, and you will never EVER forget.  I don't know if that holds true for you, but it certainly does for me.  I would be very interested in knowing your favorite games, and what those moments are, if they exist.  I would assume that this will become a spoiler filled topic, but my own posts will be spoiler free where possible.  If not, please use the <spoiler> tag.

1)  Zelda: Wind Waker.  This game had two scenes of very high note, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention one of them, so I must mention both.  The most obvious scene was the ending.  The contrast of the most dark story in a Zelda game, and the light artstyle had really had a profound effect on me throughout the game, and with the ending, everything was brought together in a way that I had never foreseen.  The other scene, I will describe with a track title from the Chrono Trigger OST.  "The Day the World Revived"

2)  Xenogears.  The moment would have to be the first scene in the second disc.  It was at that moment that I had decided that Xenogears had earned the trophy for being the best game I had ever played, and everything after was just a formality.  It wasn't really a shocking or unpredicted scene, but it made me smile, and it was some really great imagery.

3)  Chrono Trigger.  "The sea of clouds has parted and the storm has finally abated.  Could the long winter finally be over?"  The scene which I refer to of course is the part of the game which caused this event.  It was incredibly shocking to me that a video game could do such a thing at the time.

4)  Metal Gear Solid.  "Why?  I loved you..."  I am sure that everyone who has played the game will remember that moment forever.  The character which I am referring to has to be the most dynamic ever in the history of a video game.  It shouldn't have surprised me by that point in the game, as it was the last scene before the second disc, and there were several before then that had a great deal of impact ("Compared to you... I'm not so bad."), but that scene is truly one which can never be forgotten.

5)  Eternal Darkness.  "Charlemagne...."  The character of the third chapter was special.  There were events going on in the chapter which really brought the game to life.  Although later chapters would improve upon the formula greatly, and some of them hit very close to home, I have found that I still like the 3rd chapter the best.  By the end of the chapter, you know very well what is going to happen, and you can't do a thing to stop it.  You just try to do your job.  I must also give a small mention of "The Gift of Forever" though.

6)  Final Fantasy VI.  This was a game that was broken into two parts.  The first part ended with a fairly traumatic event, and I think it goes without saying that this was the moment that most people will remember of this game the most.  "On that day, the world changed forever."  I really became quite the Square fanboy when this game came out, and it really took Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, and Legend of Mana to really make me come to realize how horrible they had really gotten.

7)  Final Fantasy IV.  I really think that this game was out to set the record of most deaths in a game when they made it.  But regardless, it really seemed to work.  It was one of the first games to really try to have a story that stood head and shoulders above the rest, and I really respect that.  I really think that the moment that stood out in this game for me was Palom and Porom.  It was a simple scene, but was quite effective in its job.

8)  Conker's Bad Fur Day.  Everyone no doubt remembers the "Saving Private Ryan" stuff that was in all the trailers.  I choose more to remember the ending above all.  The game was often over the top, and was NEVER serious.  That contrast to the ending was a real shock, and will forever be remembered as the last of the Rare greats, and my favorite game from Rare.  I think that it was a good way to remember my old friend Rare.

9)  Silent Hill 2.  Angela.  Knife.  Empty room with big mirror.  I had a screenshot of that part of the game as my desktop background for many months.  Whenever my roommate saw it, she knew instantly the meaning behind it, even though she had never played the game, and had no idea who Angela was.  She said it was a nice background, but WAY too morbid.  Given that it was Christmastime though... I needed it.  But the fact of the matter is that that scene is my most memorable.  But the line that I remember most from the game... "James... you meant so much to me" will never leave me until the day I die.

10)  America's Army.  I actually really have a problem with putting this game on my top 10 list, beating out other games I love very much.  It's a PC Game, and it's an FPS.  Both of those things I generally dislike.  However, it deserves it's place here.  The first time I played the game online, I was playing on The Bridge map.  I looked down on the bridge from above, and it was exactly what I had wanted to see.  The friendly side was wearing pure white arctic combats, and were climbing around on the bridge.  There was a dense ice fog in the level, and both sides were taking heavy casualties.  There was shooting, explosions, bleeding, and dying.  It felt like home to me, and I loved the map very much.  It's just the general atmosphere I love so much.  I am a Canadian.  I like snow.

Honorable mentions would include reading the "diary" of the main character in Secret of Mana in my Nintendo Power magazines, hearing the radio announcer in SSX 3 talk about Dangerous Dave, seeing the main gates of Valua open up in Skies of Arcadia, and fighting my first no-win scenario in Wing Commander III.

Nope.  I have actually heard that the launch ones were the worst of the bunch.  But it's entirely possible that you lucked out and got a good one.

The PS2 frequently stops reading either DVDs or CDs.  Some games come on CD (blue bottom), and some come on DVDs (gold bottom).  Most likely the PS2 has stopped reading one or the other.

I rented a PS2 for 3 days, and it stopped reading DVDs on the second.  It's not at all uncommon.

well, I did watch the battle system movie, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on...  It does look like a very good and innovative system, but I think I will have to sit down and play with it to really know for sure.

I did really like the music in the game, and the fast battle load times though.  Xenosaga drove me nuts with its load times...

Thanks Berny.  I haven't had much time to check out GameTrailers recently.  I have to say that I was quite pleased (and surprised) that the voice acting was in English, and quite high in quality.  This game is still my most anticipated game.  My god it looks cool.

Also derived a new avatar from it.

Any help would be appreciated.  I really want to try this out.

EDIT:  I'd just like to randomly add that I really like this thread. I am starting to get bored with what's happening around here lately.  I don't even read the game threads even more because they are just a waste of time.  I like threads that generate discussion and (especially) debate, and I'm starting to appreciate the ones that do more.  That's why I really like people like Grey Ninja, kdr_11k, manunited4eva22, mouse_clicker, and a bunch of other people.  They usually have something intelligent to say (which is more than I can say about myself) which generates constructive discussion, which is what this forum is meant to have.

KnowsNothing, I am not really all that good with Linux.  Most of my experience with it comes from my CS courses, which uses Unix as a base.  But I can direct you toward knoppix, which is a variant of Linux that boots off of a CD rather than your hard drive.  You then don't have to install anything, and can just boot from a CD to try out Linux.

Koopa, I know what you are saying.  and I would be lying if I said I hadn't considered it.  But I don't think I am doing anything wrong in this case.  Akdaman really is someone that I have actually complained to mods about before for posting mostly stupid crap.  I have no problems if someone lacks knowledge.  I do have problems if someone is intellectually challenged.  Is this wrong?  Maybe.  Do I care?  No.  I try to tolerate it as long as possible.  That I did.  I told akdaman to look up RPC in the chances of having him do something for himself for a change.  The fact that he didn't go to google and type in 3 letters really finished it for him in my eyes.  I have never had much respect for him, and I gave him one more chance.  intellegence had nothing to do with it.

I know I had my problems with you, but I honestly don't remember what they were, which leads me to believe that I was seriously drunk when I had my fight with you (as is the case at this moment).  I don't hold any sort of grudge against you, in spite of what you might think, and I think you to be an intelligent person, in spite of our differences.  But akdaman is someone I will never accept as being sentient.

Now that being said, I REALLY wish we would get back on topic.  I will install Linux tomorrow, and will likely not return to Windows for some time.

Oh yes, I agree 100% that Opera is a fully functional browser, and is quite nice to use.  But it's marketted towards an audience that is just NOT me.  For me, Firebird is the perfect browser.  Netscape is the worst.

I heard that Ext3 had some problems, so I installed Ext2 instead.  And remember though, I have been an MS user since MS-DOS 5, so I am used to having to update.

And I am sure that I will be calling on you for answers to my questions when I get it installed.    Btw, do you know of a Linux port of Kazaa Lite?

I am SICK of all this fighting.  Akdaman, I am not going to bother fighting with you anymore.

Can we please get back on topic?

I am downloading Mandrake Linux 9.2 as we speak, and I just cleared 10GB of space on my hard drive and prepared an EXT2 partition for it.  With any luck, I should be ready to install it later on tonight.  I can't wait to start playing with it again.  And this time I WONT forget my root password.

heh.  Not too shabby at all.  What are your specs like?  I would imagine that it would be something like a Radeon 9800XT with a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz to pull something like that off.

I am content with my "new" video card, but I am waiting for the Prescott to come out before making my next serious system upgrade.

EDIT:  I REALLY hate doing this.  Ordinarilly when I agree with cubedcanuck, my response is the same as when I usually disagree with him.  I try to ignore him.  But in this case, he deserves at least some recognition for at least knowing what a HORRIBLE gaming platform a PC is.  I will say that there is no better platform to play a graphical adventure, FPS, or RTS on though.  The problem is that there aren't many games in those genres that I really care to play that much.

manunited, if you would like SSE2, that is available too.    I own an Athlon XP however, and am not capable of executing the SSE2 instruction set.  (But I hope to be SSE3 capable come next year...)

And sorry... don't really know what problem you are referring to?

well, I use bittorrent quite a bit.  I generally pick up no less than 3 anime episodes a week, which uses a fair bit of bandwidth on both upload and download.  There will be the odd ISO I pick up, such as a Linux ISO, or the ISO for the Relics of the Chozo music CD.  This month I actually used the OC Remix torrent files to finish up my collection of OC Remixes, which used well over 2GB down, and almost 1GB up.

I need a new hard drive though.

Sorry, I noticed this the other day, but didn't feel like writing a response at the time.  All the math I have taken pretty much requires me to respond to this though.

You are going astray in the 4th step.  since a = b, a - b will ALWAYS be zero.  In step 4, since you are dividing by a - b, you are dividing by zero, which if you will note, is one of the big restrictions in math, as it is an invalid operation.  Hence, 2 != 1.

N x (1/N) = 1

N = any number

And as you get closer to infinity, the identity will still hold true...

(infinity) x (1/infinity) must equal 1, but (1/infinity) is generally known as zero...Therefore, infinity x 0 = 1

Weird, huh?

infinity is NOT a number, but a concept.  What you are dealing with here is a "limit".  1/infinity is not zero, as infinity can never be reached.  There will always be a higher number at some point.  Also, if you rearrange things:

infinity/infinity is clearly 1.

the recriprocal principle states that any number times its inverse will be 1
well 0/1 *1/0 should equal 0 by the math, but is 1 by the principal.

division by zero is not allowed, so I don't really know what principal you are talking about.

Sorry guys, I was an engineering student for a year, and then switched to Computer Science.  If that makes me qualified for anything, it's detecting bad math.

All the navigation buttons, advertisements, menus, and different doo-dads in Opera take up over 1/4 of my screen.  Firebird takes up maybe less than 1/8, and is pretty much bare bones.  That's what I am talking about mainly.

And yes, I run at 1024x768, because my monitor is REALLY small.

Zero Plague, my problem is that akdaman doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, and refuses to act like a rational human being.  It's not just this thread.  I am just sick of his lack of intellect in general.  I have a severe dislike for spam, and he's one of the worst here.  I thought I did pretty good going this long without blowing up at him.

And my problem with MS should be obvious.  Look at the PC industry.  MS doesn't share marketspace, they buy it.  The last thing that I want them in is the console industry.  Nintendo always believed that their success comes from innovation.  Microsoft always believed that they could create success by buying everything.

No, we have to pay extra if we use an insane amount of bandwidth.  I think the guidelines are like 1GB up, and 6GB down a month, for the plan I am on.  I frequently use about 2GB up, and 10GB down per month on MY computer alone.  That's not even counting my roommate's computer.

Yep.  Nintendo doesn't have support from giants like Konami, Square, Capcom, EA, Bandai or.... oh wait.  That's Xbox.

A small loss of money in a 4 month period preceeded by continuous profits for 20 years does NOT make continuous losses as you put it.  If you want to see continuous loss, go look at how much money the Xbox has made Microsoft.

Your claim that Windows worked perfectly fine was naive and to use your words:

I just feel that your reasoning is stupid.

I asked you to go figure out what RPC was for your own benefit.  I am not here to hold your hand.  I am not here to provide technical support for your computer.  I am not here to win any fights.  I gave you fair warning that you didn't have a clue what you were talking about, and you should drop it, but you choose to sit here and fight with me.  Why?

Personally I don't give a crap what you think of me.  I might care a little more if you actually contributed something to this place, or paid attention in english class, or moved to an ISP other than AOL, but really, you haven't left a good impression on anyone here really.  Most people are just a little more polite than I.
