Sounds like a good compromise, IF it's true.  Xbox this fall. Revolution in the summer. PS3 = summer/fall?  Nobody will have a full year's advantage, so this can wipe out part of Xbox's lead, other than the first holiday season.

However, Nintendo may have internal goals... but they have slipped *every* time.

See, normally I'd agree with you, but if Nintendo rereleased their system with its progressive scan port removed to cut down costs, they could just as easily do the same for a wired port (heck, they'd probably save MORE money).  But now I'm starting to sound like Ian--I think Nintendo recognizes that not everyone has broadband, let alone wireless, and will act accordingly.

Does anybody know where there is a picture of the newer GameCube's motherboard? Though I don't know it for fact, I tend to suspect it wasn't just a removal of the port to cut costs. Component video rendering could have been removed from the consolidated hardware, for example.  Or possibly since Nintendo was creating a new budget model anyway, and while the port didn't add much to the cost, the sales of component cables rendered it mostly useless and stripped it just because they could.

Nonetheless, I understand what you're saying.

Assuming Rev uses a red laser format, yes DVD playback would be negligible. But if they included DVD playback, Sony will still be able to say PS3 plays the new HD format, and they'll still have that advantage.

I think if Nintendo does it, it should be all or nothing. Go for the HD playblack or don't go at all. While there are good anecdotal reasons to do it (as Savior mentions) I still think it's far from a given.

Edit: Heads-up to the technology geeks out there. It looks like it'll be Sony's Blu-ray discs, but Toshiba software and encryption.

Wow, so many concerns.

Granted, I already have a wireless router so I am basically all set, but if you don't have one, you can get one for the cost of a DS game.

Yes it would be ideal if wired and wireless were both an option, but really the cost of switching to wireless isn't that great. If you're waiting for Revolution's online games, at least you know that you have at least a year and a half to dig up the $30 extra for a wireless router, if it doesn't include an ethernet port.

Frankly, as a side note, the wireless technology is more expensive than a physical port. The cost of an ethernet port is negligible if you're already incorporating networking capability. Not including a port would be more of a design choice, not so much a cost concern. But I digress.

Re: wired and wireless routers.

As others mentioned, and as you can see in the link above, most wireless routers also include wired ports, so you can keep your devices wired if you wish.

Setting up a wireless router is not much different from a wired one. The biggest difference is that you connect wireless routers and devices together using an encryption "key" that you create. This makes it secure. Once it's set up, you don't have to fuss with it again. It's an extra step, but fairly simple.

But how are you that certain, Savior?

MS Claims 20 Million Xboxes Sold Worldwide (as of April)

Xbox Live page says there are a million worldwide Live Subscribers

I don't know when the Live page was last updated for accuracy, but that basically puts them at 5%, give or take a little, with the readily available numbers.

No question it's fake. Common sense says the format will be proprietary just as all formats in the past have been. You won't see HD DVD, DVD, or Blu-Ray logos on Revolution discs.

That aside, even black ink would appear slightly reflective. But it's all uniformly the same color no matter where it appears on the disc (shaded or lit). The "internal use" line would be less than pristine considering the backdrop. It looks like the reflection lines were used to keep the text straight in photoshop.

I join the "meh" camp.

Aside from not being interested in showcasing my handsome mug over Xbox Live, the system itself is sort of fugly. It looks like it wants to be an HTPC. The least they could do is make it look more like a standard appliance by hiding its ugliness in a darker color.

Reggie admits Nintendo made a wrong choice in going for the purple cube, but they'll make something sexier than this.

The "Dreamcast" debate is something I'd be interested in hearing Rick's comments on.

The argument MS makes is that by launching early, they're basically pulling a PS2 by getting a headstart. But could they be possibly pulling a Sega by cutting off the current generation before the market is ready to move on? (IS the market ready to move on?)

Marionette was neither a Mario game or an internet game, according to Nintendo. Methinks it was Perin that squashed that rumor a long time ago. But it was definitely squashed.

"PGC wishes Mr. Yamauchi a happy retirement."

Comments like these are always interesting.  Ditto for the times people say, "We send our condolences to the friends and family" when someone passes.

I guess it's cheaper than springing for a $2 card or a letter, but he's never going to see this.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Hardcore Moms?
« on: April 25, 2005, 02:56:17 PM »
I didn't expect anyone to actually sell the games individually. Maybe I should have explained that further.

It's true that the games are free, but who's to say someone wouldn't crank out a disc of 20-30 of these games on a disc, on the cheap? Or supply the games online for free like they do on PCs, or even bundle the disc? The storage and bandwidth requirements are so minimal that many games can be re-downloaded each time and held in RAM or a memory card or something.

Basically I wasn't thinking Nintendo would change the dynamic of the mom games, just do what they do on a PC, but on an online game system that will be cheaper than a PC. I know it doesn't sound "cool" but what else could they mean by expanding the market? Who else do they reach out to that they don't already try to tap?

Well it was a thought, but I'm not ruling it out yet.

KnowsNothing, join the MILF club buddy.   j/k.

Nintendo Gaming / Hardcore Moms?
« on: April 25, 2005, 11:11:07 AM »
Women over 40 are the most hardcore Online Gamers

The above information isn't new, but could this be what Nintendo means about expanding the market to new customers??

While PS3 and Xbox 360 pander to the young males already playing their games, is Nintendo's plan to also capture the moms that are also hooked on playing online games? No other console is even trying to reach them, so why not?

Naturally they have to keep making the Marios and Zeldas, but what if Revolution also became a champion of hardcore moms, connecting to some online game service? This is starting to make sense... all their talk about simplicity, wireless, and controller sharing, etc.

Actually, there is a touch of genius there. Moms also control the majority of spending in the household. Get on the good side of the moms, and the kids end up with Revolutions. Maybe two of them because mom will want her own. Heh.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: No Revolution at E3?
« on: April 19, 2005, 07:15:12 PM »
Nintendo's GameCube message at SpaceWorld 2000 was compelling and adequate. They showed the hardware, gave specs, and showed several "tech demo" videos. Granted, they weren't competing for attention since it was a Nintendo-only show, but I think that much would be enough.

Live demos and show floor playable games aren't necessary just yet. The games are far too early along anyway. Anything along the lines of a live Miyamoto demo would just be a huge bonus to me.

As for the competition stealing their ideas, the dev kits have GOT to come out shortly after E3. If Nintendo doesn't share the big secret at E3, MS and Sony will find out almost right away anyway because the secret will leak when the kits ship. Any fool should be able to assume this.

(As an aside editorial, being "different" is not as important as Nintendo thinks it is. So even if the idea is copied, their lunch isn't going to be eaten just because of that. Being "different" didn't work for GameCube. Why would it for Revolution?)

Also remember that Nintendo's comments on what they will or won't show were made BEFORE Sony and MS got into last week's pissing contest. The situation has changed. Nintendo may just be laying in wait to see what Sony and MS do first. I think they'll be capable of showing a lot, but they're not going to volunteer more than they have to.

All that being said, Nintendo has 3 platforms they need to cover in their presentation. You know there will be an extensive Zelda demo. You know there will be a wireless DS demo. Unfortunately, Revolution will likely be the last and lowest priority item, because at the end the the day, they need to make a case for their current lineup of products. But I am hopeful they'll impress us somehow anyway.

Well, the little "Drawn by N-Revolution" should give away that they're just fantasy mockups.

I'm not digging either one. The console looks like a warped GameCube.  And a controller with grips that turn inward? I get a stiff neck playing DS as it is. I don't want my wrists going next.

I don't doubt that there is a bigger issue in society to be discussed regarding this sort of thing, but the feeling I got out of reading this was a soft "shame on you" to the guys, and a "hang in there ladies, our day with come" for women.

If I am completely dense and missing the point, let me know. I'm the first to admit I can be thick headed.

E3 isn't just a party and supersized arcade. People are there because they have jobs to do. The social aspects are a bonus. E3 is bigger than life. The companies are all doing what they can do get the attention of the show goers. Anyone can tell you how much of an information overload it is. But at the end of the day, and despite the party atmosphere, the people there are mostly industry media and they will generally forget the babes just as quickly as they were spotted.

The final point was a bit odd. (re: "...the best and most important thing a girl can do is try not to feel intimidated.") Was it a message to the women gamers? I mean, E3 is not a public affair, and any attention drawn to the babes are just bonus/alternative content for the media to provide.  I guess my point is that, yeah, there are booth babes there. But so what? It's not something for anybody to get insecure over. The author, having not attended an E3 yet,  may not understand how quickly dismissed the booth babes generally are.

It is a cheap hook? Of course. But I think their general relevance is a little exaggerated. They're all adults, and the journalists know that they're just hired, talking billboards. Despite the opinion to the contrary at times, men aren't complete apes. We wouldn't confuse booth babes with legitimate gamers that just happen to be women. And, they (the babes and the journalists) are there to do their jobs. It's not Saturday night bar hopping, nor are the babes being made superstars. They help liven the mood, but they're just one of MANY backdrops to the products being pitched.

Uh, again they were examples. The point made was that next time they should acquire more kick-ass 3rd party support, and avoid being pigeon-holed as the console of "star power" and "safe" games.

A kick ass role playing game, have you heard of 'The Legend of Zelda"?

Could you elaborate on this Zelda of which you speak?  One big game in a genre doesn't satisfy a system for its life. I was giving examples and not referring only to Nintendo, but securing kick-ass 3rd party games as well.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: REV's appearance and marketing
« on: April 10, 2005, 05:26:08 AM »
I ditto Ian on the name and marketing.  I would like to see a system that is sleek, but shocking.  Silver/black like the DS, and charcoal gray like the N64 are neutral enough not to be offensive, and blend in with typcial TV/stereo equipment.

As for shocking, I envision the Revolution being very small, but sleek. Similar to the size of the Mac Mini, but more rectangular. About the size of a dictionary. The guts can be cooled like a laptop, with a heatpipe-type design that exhausts out the side or back.

1123
The idea was that the controllers would contain something like the transceiver mentioned in the above link to receive the video signal.

Just now I got totally fed up with that paparazzi ad and just switched to FireFox, adblock installed. That thing needed to die.
