The multiplayer for this was an absolute blast. Is that working with the Wii U version? I'd be down to grab it if the multiplayer is restored.
I am not sure. I will check and get back to you.

Nintendo Gaming / Best of the Wii U eShop (Round 3: 2014 - Part 1)
« on: December 05, 2020, 04:40:05 PM »
Background
The Wii U e-shop will only be open for a limited time so it is worth looking at the games there while there is still time to buy them. I will be going through the list of eShop games chronologically by release date using Nintendo's Game Store site. I will be skipping over Virtual Console releases for now, but I will cover them at the end. I am also skipping games that were released on disc, unless that disc is not available or prohibitively expensive.
The Games: Round 3 - 2014 - Part 1
This third set of games encompasses the first six months of 2014. The following 22 titles are up for discussion with info in the following format:
Title (Developer/Publisher, price, availability on other consoles, Metacritic score (Metacritic Rank on Wii U), NWR review score [link to review])
  • Cocoto Magic Circus 2 (Nacon/Neko, $29.99, Wii U only, 7 NWR review)
  • Unepic (EnjoyUp, $9.99, Vita/XB1, 72 (115), 6.5 NWR Review)
  • Percy's Predicament (Maestro, $5.99, 3DS/Switch)
  • My Farm (BiP media, $4.99, Switch, 3 NWR Review)
  • Blok Drop U (RCMADIAX, $2.99, App Store, 53, 6 NWR Review)
  • Pure Chess (VooFoo, $7.99, 3DS, 61, 7 NWR Review)

  • My First Songs (RingZero, $9.99, 3DS)
  • Abyss (EnjoyUp, $1.99, Switch, 59)
  • Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails (Dakko Dakko, $9.99, PS4/Vita, 79 (98), 8.5 NWR Review)
  • Ittle Dew (Ludosity, $9.99, 3DS, 79, 8, NWR Review)
  • Gravity Badgers (Wales Interactive, $4.99, Vita, 48, 4 NWR Review)
  • 1001 Spikes (Nicalis, $15.00, 3DS/Vita/PS4/XB1, 83, 8 NWR Review)
  • Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition (Martial Hesse Dreville/Digital Lounge, $7.99, Switch/3DS/Vita, 73)
  • How to Survive (EKO Software/505 Games, $14.99, PS3/X360, 55,
  • Pushmo World (Intelligent Systems/Nintendo, $9.99, Wii U only, 80 (62), 9 NWR Review)
  • My Jurassic Farm (BiP media, $7.99, App Store)
  • My Arctic Farm (BiP media, $7.99, App Store)
Highlights
The first half of 2014 saw quite a few iPad games get shoveled onto the eShop. If you ever wondered what happened to Daan Koopman, it turns out he reviewed one too many My ___ Farm ports. The cheapest options this round are Flowerworks, an HD remaster of a Wii-ware title that has a free demo, and Abyss, both of which are $2. The best reviewed game of the bunch is 1001 Spikes, which has an 83 on Metacritic. I also hear good things about Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails, which is still not on Switch for some reason. Mr. Bungle's pick of the week is Pushmo World. This Wii U exclusive puzzle game was developed by Intelligent Systems, received a 9 from NWR, and is Metacritic's 62nd best Wii U game.
Comments
I welcome any corrections to the information I found when compiling the list. The information here is for the US so let me know about differences in other regions. Not sure what to comment, consider questions like:
  • Why is Cocoto Magic Circus 2 so expensive?
  • How well does Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate play on 3DS?
  • Will there be a 30th anniversary edition of Another World?
  • How do you survive?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Zelda DS: Phantom Hourglass
« on: December 02, 2020, 04:43:38 PM »
I just finished my first play through of PH on the Wii U VC. I could not find a topic on the DS VC so I was advised to dust off this old thread and bump it. I am now getting a warning from the site so I hope this is cool with everyone  :-\.
Thoughts on the game
I really enjoyed this game. I liked the length of the overall game and the length of the dungeons. I liked the controls, the weapons, and even the salvaging mini-game. I missed out on the DS completely so it really felt fresh to me to use the microphone and touchscreen in such novel ways. I usually don't like when I have to look things up but that only happened twice in this game which acceptable for me.
Using the Wii U
As you probably know the Wii U VC has quite a few options for displaying the two screens. I chose the one where the game pad is the lower touch screen of the DS and the TV is the upper screen of the DS. The worked really well. I was mostly looking at the game-pad but during the boss battles when both screens were used it was really exciting. When I got to the one puzzle where you are supposed to close the DS I thought "Well, I could touch the gamepad to the TV but I don't think the game would detect that" but I realized you can just go into the VC menu (using ZR) and then come back and it works like closing the DS.
Even on the big screen this game looks surprisingly good (about PS1 quality). It makes me pine for the alternate reality where there is a 3DS virtual console that uses the gamepad as the lower touch screen and my 3D TV to display the stereoscopic 3D top screen.  :'(
Reading this thread.
I also read through this whole thread before posting. It is not surprising that the controls were so divisive as this a recurring debate. People that grow up pressing buttons like pressing buttons. I think the next gen might be the same way with touch screens. Personally I love new ways to interact with games but I get the opposition.

If people feel like reflecting on this game after another decade has passed I would be interested in hearing about it. I should have comments on Spirit Tracks when I get to that in a year or so.

755
I am playing Shantae and the Seven Sirens on Switch. So far it is great, combining the gameplay of Pirate's Curse with the HD graphics of Half-Genie Hero. It even has cut scenes! I should be finished before the month is through so I will post again with some final thoughts.

756
It appears the special edition comes with a localized NES manual. I imagine that will be unofficially available online for people just downloading the game.

The main purpose here is to see what you would recommend to others. Consider questions like: Is the game great? Does it make good use of the Game pad? Is the Wii U the best way to play it? Is it available on Switch or 3DS?

Round 2 - The Second Half of 2013
This second set of games encompasses the interval from the launch of the Virtual Console in June 2013 to the end of the calendar year. The following twelve titles are up for discussion with info in the following format:
Title (Developer/Publisher, price, demo availability, availability on other consoles, Metacritic score, Metacritic Rank on Wii U, NWR review score [link to review])
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe (Atooi, $9.99, switch, 3DS, 84, 33, 9.5 NWR review)
  • Star Wars Pinball (Zen Studios, $9.99, switch, 3DS, 83, 37,9 NWR Review)
  • Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party (Redgrim/KnapNok, $11.99, demo, Wii U exclusive, 75, 99, 8 NWR Review)
  • Pokemon Rumble U (Ambrella/Nintendo, $17.99, Wii U exclusive, 49, 173, 5 NWR Review)
  • Spot The Differences: Party! (Sanuk, $5.00, switch, 3 NWR Review)
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara (Capcom, $14.99, PS3/X360, 77, 82, 8 NWR Review)
  • Mighty Switch Force! 2 (WayForward, $5.99, switch, 3DS, 74)
  • Toki Tori (Two Tribes, $1.99, switch, 3DS)
  • Edge (Two Tribes, $1.99, 3DS, PSP, 79, 65, 8 NWR Review)
  • Rush (Two Tribes, $1.99, Wii U console exclusive, 77, 79)
  • Knytt Underground (Nifflas'/Undefined, $6.99, PS3, Vita, 76, 85, 8 NWR Review)
  • Dr. Luigi (Nintendo, $14.99, Wii U exclusive, 65, 142)
Highlights
This round of games has a couple of Wii U exclusives published by Nintendo (Dr. Luigi and Pokemon Rumble U), though neither reviewed very well. Two tribes has a trio of games, one of which is only on Wii U, PC, and mobile. The D&D game and Knytt underground are available on other consoles but not in the eight generation. The best reviewed game of the bunch is Mutant Mudds Deluxe which is the 33rd best Wii U game according to Metacritic. The cheapest options are the Two Tribes releases at $1.99. However Mr. Bungle's pick of the week has to be Spin The Bottle: Bumpie's Party. It has a demo, reviewed well, and is exclusive to the Wii U. In fact, it still has a functional promo site http://spinthebottlethegame.com/

758
Sounds good. I'll make it so. Same meet up time?
Yeah, same Khush time, same Khush channel.

759
Let me know when you are ready for another meet-up, Mr. Bungle.
How about Friday again? The blackest of Fridays that is. I am ready to cross some pi's and pop some bees!

760
P.S.: Chasing Aurora is not in the poll but was also a digital-only launch game. Never played it though.

Good catch! I believe it has been delisted at this point on the US eShop. I do want to spotlight some of the other delisted games as well so maybe we will do a poll just for those at the end.

Nintendo Gaming / Best of the Wii U eShop (Part 1 - Pre-Virtual Console)
« on: November 22, 2020, 03:37:12 PM »
Background
I really enjoyed Khushrenada's series of polls about the 3DS eShop and was given his blessing to run a similar series for the Wii U. The Wii U e-shop will only be open for a limited time so I think it is worth looking at the games while there is still time to buy them. I will be going through the list of eShop games chronologically by release date using Nintendo's Game Store site. I will be skipping over Virtual Console releases for now, but I will cover them at the end. I am also skipping games that were released on disc, unless that disc is not available or prohibitively expensive.

Part 1 - Before the Pre-Virtual Console
This first set of games encompasses the interval from the launch of the eShop in November 2012 to the launch of VC games in April 2013. The following nine titles are up for discussion (developer/publisher, current price on U.S. eShop, demo availability, Metacritic score, Metacritic rank for Wii U)
  • Nano Assault Neo (Shin'en, $9.99, demo available, 71, 121)
  • Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition (WayForward, $9.99, 80, 57)
  • Trine 2: Director's Cut (Frozenbyte, $5.99, demo available, 84, 30)
  • Little Inferno (Tomorrow Corporation, $9.99, 79, 67)
  • Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 (TECMO KOEI, $49.99, 40)
  • BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Gaijin Games, $14.99, 84, 34)
  • Zen Pinball 2 (Zen Studios, Free to start, 71)
  • Toki Tori 2+ (Two Tribes, $14.99, 76, 87)
  • Wii U Panorama View (Nintendo, $2.00 per video, demo available, only available on Wii U)

762
The Wii U definitely can't really take advantage of the speed of an SSD but it is worth noting that SSDs are completely silent and it does also allow you to theoretically have the drive, a LAN adapter, and a gamecube adapter hooked up all at once without taking up an extra outlet which is nice. I personally just use an SD card in the SD card slot for Wii homebrew stuff and make sure to back it up regularly.

Yeah, I think I will get an SSD. Should I be concerned about compatibility? Will most of the currently available ones work with Wii U. Also, for SD cards what is the largest size it will support?

763
Any particular title you've been wanting to get into?
I had not thought about coop until you mentioned it so I think it is dealer's choice.

764
Ok. Well, how about tomorrow, Friday evening?
That works for me.

765
I am still playing Wii U regularly but mine is starting to have some serious slow down. I think it's the external hard drive. I am using a powered WD drive that is rather old. Does anyone have a recommendation for an external hard drive that is currently available?

766
I am down to clown. I have a similar schedule where I am free most nights after 8:00 EST. Just give me a day or two notice. You know I love DK but I will play just about any of the games on there.

I have not really been following this game but I knew it was developed by WayForward so I am shocked that it turned out this bad. They have made some great licensed games in the past. I would like to know the story behind this failure.

I just played this for the first time last year via the NES Classic. It is one of the easier games to complete on that mini-console. It holds up pretty well for an NES game. I thought the fight with Meta-Knight was the toughest part. My favorite Kirby game is still Return to Dreamland on Wii.

So I completed Splatterhouse on Switch via the Namco Museum. I forgot to mention that I was using the NES joycon. The game only uses two buttons and the d-pad on those controllers is my favorite for switch options. Again, the music, graphics, and tight controls make me heartily recommend this game. I tried out the TG16 version via the TG16 mini. There are the usual downgrades you get with any arcade to console port. The most noticeable losses were the music and Rick's mask. The protagonist is obviously a Jason knock-off in the arcade game and perhaps that would not fly with a console release. The red mask in the console version sort of bothered me  :-\.
The TG-16 game also limits you to 5 continues where as the arcade game does not. However you do get 5 hearts i.e. you can get hit 1 more time per life. Still a decent port and I don't know why I never played it on my TG-16 growing up. The TG-16 controllers are also two-button but have built-in turbo switches (they are even called "Turbo-pads"). The middle setting does work for attacking repeatedly but I still prefer to mash the buttons myself.
Also, in the discord we had a patron game night and played some Luigi's Mansion 3 multiplayer. It is really fun but most of us had not played since the game came out so we were not familiar enough with the controls to get very far.

What is Gears of War known for? Bombs and explosions, of course!

Disappointed to miss out on the finals by just a hair, but satisfied to run away with the bronze on his first attempt, Mr. Bungle chugs another Mountain Dew to wash down his third bag of Doritos (Cool Ranch, obvs).
He wipes the chips dust off on his controller, where it congeals into the existing layers of Cheetos grime, slowly becoming a future archeological dig site...

Dude, Gears Tactics isn't even a FPS and there is no multiplayer! The bro-pak is most disappointed  >:(
