General Gaming / Shocktober III: Season of the Witch
« on: September 30, 2022, 12:47:28 PM »
Hopefully Pokepal is cool with me starting this up :D.

When does this start?

Shocktober begins right now, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything that falls under the classification of a "scary" game. Survival horror, action horror, a horror-themed FPS, anything with zombies, etc. In the interest of having fun, this can be more of a loose definition of what defines a scary game, and constitute anything that is more-or-less "spooky themed". If you're not sure, just check out the previous years' threads [2021] [2020].

You can think of this as another Backlaugust if you want -- You've probably got horror games in your backlog, and it's time to play them. How many games you want to play is up to you, whether that's just one game or a few games. Any platform, doesn't matter. They can be new games, old games. Even horror games you've already beaten long ago and want to replay. You don't have to choose all of your games up front; you can if you want, but it's fine to just take it one-game-at-a-time.

Who should participate?

Do you:
  • Enjoy scary games?
  • Have at least one horror game in your backlog?
  • Plan on buying a new horror game?
  • Really love Halloween?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you should do this!

The purpose of this is a little less about seeing how many games we can beat, but for everyone to share in the experience of playing something scary. A good horror game can be a tough thing to get all of the way through to the end, but with some moral support from the rest of the community that's going through the same thing, maybe we can all make it back into the light by November! That's what it comes down to -- having fun, and being scared shitless. And being scared shitless is a lot more fun when being scared shitless as a group.

One last thing -- for your fellow NWR-er who hasn't played every game, try using spoiler tags whenever possible for anything major that's story-related, or just in general anything that should not be spoiled.

Examples of games that count as Horror:

Anything remotely spooky, scary, or Halloweeny. You getting Bayonetta 3? That counts. You planning to play some mutiplayer Luigi's Mansion 3? You sucked yourself right into a game that counts for Shocktober. Are you just planning to do the Halloween event in Animal Crossing? Come on in. You could even pick a spooky game from the Switch SNES online games and sign up to play it online with someone on BShy's new thread. As we prepare for the return of the umbra witch, let's all have some scary fun  ;D.

I had a losing streak at first so I exited out and then started up again and the matchmaking seemed to work better from then on. Also, the decorations in Splatsville were really nice.
I wanted to try one of the three way turf wars but since team fun was in first place it said I couldn't. Did any of you get to try the three-way matches?

I only get motion sickness with VR. Did you try adjusting all the settings?

I finally got around to the Anarchy Battles, which are the new ranked battle modes. There are two of them, Anarchy Battle Open and Anarchy Battle Series. Open is a single match of one of the same four types from Splatoon 2: Splat Zones, Rainmaker, Tower Control, or Clam Blitz. If you win you get some rank points (I was getting about 8 points) and losing will take some away ( I was losing about 2 points). This seemed small and will change as your rank changes. My starting rank was B- due to having a higher rank in Splatoon 2.
The Series commits you to a set of matches, keeping track of your wins and losses. It ends when you get five wins or three loses, whichever happens first. Then based on how well you did you get points. You have to spend about 70 points to enter the series, but even ending 2-2 I was earning over a hundred points making this a much better way to rank up. You will also find that randos are much more likely to stay on your team in this mode as they are also in a series. What is nice is that the type of game is different for open and series, but you only have one rank. So, say I don't care for Rainmaker, then I can always avoid it and not let it mess up my rank.
I also joined some friends in online battles. This works much better that before and I got to Splat some Toons with Mop and others. You should be able to join me in a match, if it says that I am just online, it means I am queuing up. You can only join while someone is in a match, not matchmaking.

NieR: Automata - The End of YoRHa Edition is at the top of my list. I am on the lookout for a copy of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call on 3DS now when I am at the used game stores. I would like to see Neil's response to the Octopath Traveler remark. Does he still feel the game is a 9?

Pauline has really made it into the regular cast now. I am guessing we will see her playable in the next Mario Party.

I totally agree with the reviewer. This game could have just been updates to Splatoon 2. But I am glad fans of the single player campaign have something new and I enjoy all the little additions/improvements. Maybe there will be a whole new mode added on as part of the Anarchy battles (formerly Ranked battles) but this still would not necessitate a new game.

I had assumed this was some sort of X-Box exclusive. Glad to hear it is on the way to Switch.

TalkBack / Re: Kirby Re-Returns To Dreamland In Deluxe Edition February 24
« on: September 13, 2022, 07:38:18 PM »
Return to Dreamland is still my favorite traditional 2D Kirby, so having it in HD with new content will be great.

Same here. I recently replayed the main campaign and it holds up really well. If there is a retail release I will get it on sale.  For folks that have not played it, there is a lot of game there. The main campaign is a decent length and then there is a lot of post game content as well the mini-games that were mentioned in the trailer.

I really hope they design this with multiplayer in mind. I know there was multiplayer on 3 Deluxe, but the main campaign was designed for single player.

I am not sure if it was always this way but North America is in the same region as Australia for Splatfests. Also, I will be on team fun. Can't go to a deserted island without my games.

This was my favorite announcement of the direct. Really looking forward to this. Hopefully there is a retail version.

Considering Splatoon 2 is over 4 million in Japan, the third game will at least deput with over a million, maybe even close to 2 million.  I'll predict we'll see about 1.7 million on the physical charts next week.
IGN posted the following based on a GamesRadar report
"Splatoon 3 is off to an incredibly hot start in Japan as the game has sold 3.45 million copies in just three days, outpacing huge Nintendo Switch titles including Animal Crossing"

I picked up the game on Friday along with a nifty keychain Best Buy was including with pre-orders. No Callie and Marie amiibo were there though  :-[ so I had to go home and order them for pick up next week. I got to repeat the tutorial that was at the beginning of the Splatfest demo they had recently, but that was quick so no big deal. After getting to level 2 in Turf war you open up the weapons shop and using the special tickets from having a Splatoon 2 save I scored a Splattershot Pro. I am still trying to figure out the angle shooter sub weapon, but the crab special is really fun. After I hit level 4 I opened up the other shops. I played the card game and it is okay, but not something I will spend much time on. Of course, Salmon Run is now 24/7 so I spent a little time in there and the new bosses are pretty cool. One big difference is the Ranked mode, which is not two different Anarchy modes that I have not played yet. I will report back once I check those out. Until then...stay fresh  8)

I saw the trailer for Disney Illusion Island on the Switch news feed and instantly wishlisted it. I really like the art style and am always down for a co-op platformer.

I don't know if this is just me, but there is no talkback on the Gamescom roundup article.

I picked up the special edition yesterday and there is a ton of stuff in there. Definitely worth it if you are a TMNT fan and they are still available. Not sure what game I will start with but probably the third NES game since I have the other two and played them not long ago.
